As the overwhelming favorite to repeat as national champs, Florida wasn’t tested in its season opener against a Football Championship Subdivision team.

The competition isn’t expected to get much tougher in their second game Saturday when the top-ranked Gators host Troy.

Expectations have soared at Florida since Tim Tebow and linebacker Brandon Spikes announced in January they would return for their senior seasons. With their offensive and defensive leaders back, the Gators returned 18 of 22 starters and were an obvious choice to win it all again.

Florida opened its most anticipated season in school history with a near-perfect performance, defeating overmatched Charleston Southern 62-3 on Saturday. The Gators jumped out to a 42-3 halftime lead and most of the starters rested for the second half as the team rolled up 624 yards of offense.

Tebow completed 10 of 15 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown, and also ran for a score—the 44th of his career.

“It’s hard to evaluate that game,” coach Urban Meyer said.

This game could have a similar outcome.

While Florida is coming off its second BCS title in three years, Troy ended the 2008 season with a 30-27 overtime loss to Southern Mississippi in the New Orleans Bowl.

The Trojans, who opened this year with last Thursday’s 31-14 loss to Bowling Green, have dropped eight straight against ranked opponents since defeating then-No. 14 Missouri 24-14 in 2004.

One of those defeats came at the hands of Florida.

In the only other meeting between these schools, the then-No. 4 Gators beat Troy 59-31 on Sept. 8, 2007. The game wasn’t as close as the final score indicated, as the Gators built a 49-7 halftime lead.

Tebow completed 18 of 25 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 93 yards and two scores. He would go on to win the Heisman Trophy that year.

“They may have the best football coach in America,” coach Larry Blakeney told Troy’s official Web site. “They have the best football player in America, and probably the most dynamic group of guys on defense that they have ever had.”

That defense gave up 323 yards in the opener and looked nothing like the unit that slowed down Heisman winner Sam Bradford and Oklahoma in last season’s BCS title game, but Meyer isn’t too concerned.

The Gators used limited formations in their offensive and defensive packages, trying not to show too much for future opponents to scout.

One offensive unit that they previewed a few times was their new banzai package, a version of Oklahoma’s no-huddle offense.

After preparing for the Sooners’ up-tempo, quick-snap offense for last season’s championship game, Florida installed the banzai package during spring drills, worked on it throughout two-a-day practices and debuted against the Buccaneers.

“What you saw Saturday was the tip of the iceberg as far as what’s available to us,” Meyer said.

Meyer believes it’s something his staff will unveil more and more each week, possibly even to the point where it becomes an every-down deal.

“We like it, we feel comfortable with it and it’s been fun because it gives us a different tempo, a different style,” Tebow said. “You get up on the ball and go play again and hit them in the mouth again. It’s good.”

Even if the Gators only use the banzai package a few times this week, it’s still one more thing for overmatched Troy to try and stop.

The Trojans allowed 389 yards against the Falcons and were run over for 500 in their last meeting with the Gators.

“We’re going to try to improve a whole lot from the last time we went,” defensive end Brandon Lang said. “I feel like we’re a much better team than we were the first time we went. We have got the players and the talent. We just have to show up and play.”

They forgot to add to the article that Tebow saved a family of 6 from a burning building, saved a little girls kitty from a tree, and helped 12 old ladies cross the street so they could play bingo all before he took the field and scored 5 touchdowns against Troy.

I doubt Kiffin really expected to win this year (although there is always that possibility). I do not think Kiffin really believed the Gators were in violation (he had just taken the test and did not report the incident to SEC or NCAA).

I think the comments Kiffin made were ill-advised if on a national level when speaking to Gators.

However, Kiffin was speaking to boosters and UT fans. Part of a Head Coach's job in college football is to get excitement about the program. There certainly is that this year and perhaps Kiffin will be able to take it and improve upon it.

I am a Gator fan and think UF will win. I am concerned that they fumbled *6* times!?!?! There is certainly plenty of room for improvement, especially on offense and play-calling.

Screw all you Gator haters out there. Deal with the reality now that the Gators are the team to beat week in and week out. The team doesn't make the schedule. The fact is for the last 5 years they have proven time after time that they can beat any team in the nation and they can get beat as well. Ole Miss last year, ruined what would have been an undefeated season. Hey it happens. Trust me,i wish we could play USC,Texas, and all these other so called badass, should be ranked # 1 teams. Should we win the SEC title this year? Absolutely! Should we win the BCS title? Absolutely! Will we win either the SEC or BCS title this year? Time will tell. So to all you haters,STFU and deal with it!!!!! GO GATORS!

I would love it if these posts only came from alumni of the shools not the wanna be's. So many of the new Gator fans jumped from the sinking Miami and FSU ships and will do the same when UF starts to stumble as the all do.
Same with the rest ofyou haters out there. If you didn't go to the school Shut up you don't have a right to open your yaps.
My first year at UF was the '79 0-10-1 year. So now I say
GO Gators We have earned it.

And as for the schedule....this schedule was made YEARS in advance....it just happened to come the year AFTER Florida won the national title...NOBODY was sitting there saying...'the Gators deserve a break for part of this season'....and if Florida lost 2-3 games last year and weren't the defending champs..nobody would give a $h!t about their schedule...so get off of it already. Let's see ANYBODY...ANY TEAM... including usc...go through last years' Gator schedule and come out unharmed.....we beat VERY GOOD teams to get there...Miami...@ Tennessee..LSU..Georgia..@ Florida State..Alabama (who was #1 at the time)..and Oklahoma......so get off of their schedule already.

Post 8-2, yeah the SEC is overrated, they have only won the National Championship 5 of the last 10 years. Schedules are created years in advance. I'm pretty certain Florida played Miami in the first few weeks of the season recently...oh wait is was last year and people complained we ran up the score on them. Who did we play before that, Hawaii...yeah they were a team that went 12-1 the year before. What was the final when we played them in the first game of the year? 56-10 you dang gator haters.

#82 lucky guy... Did you watch the same game I did last night? After that showing I wouldn't be suprised if USC drops in the polls. Both of those teams played bad last night and don't deserve to be in the top 5...

post 86...Arizona plays: central michigan, northern arizona, Oregon state plays portland state, unlv, UCLA plays san diego state, kansas state, and your very own USC opened against san jose st. so yes you are just another gator hater because you choose to over look your own conference. and SEC plays tough out of conference every year, actually 5 out of the last 7 year we have wooped up on someone to win the national championship against a non conf oppenent? do those games not count as non conf?

Post 69. I have no qualms with the Gators being national champs. I just wish they would stop ducking teams outside of their conference and stop playing for all intensive purposes JUCO level teams when compared with their SEC opponents. Do you really take pleasure in watching them play Troy or Southern whatever and later Florida International? Their non conference schedule is weak to say the least and it is truly hard to consider the SEC tough when most of the teams in the SEC schedule weak non conference opponents. TN. scheduled UCLA and they lost today, but you do know that's the exception and not the rule. I have the same problem with Big 12 teams as well and like you I am in Big 12 country (OK).

Do you have any pull with Urban? If so, see if you can get him to answer Pete's call and schedule the other Trojans, instead. Pete has been waiting for the call back!

Dewey you sound like an idiot. i never complained at all. i said you cry babies should be happy we have a weak schedule because we wont be repeating if we lose one game(thats not complaining its just a observation). learn how to read the context. in 2006 we had the #1 toughest schedule, they didnt plan that. it just happens. just like this year the SEC happens to be in a down year. they didnt plan that either.

Oh and by the way...that came from a Gators fan.

SEC is overrated. Georgia lost to Oklahoma State last week and Oklahoma State lost to Houston today. UCLA beat Tennessee in Knoxville. USC should move up to the top spot after beating OSU in Columbus with a freshman quarterback and he will get better as the season progresses.
