Nebraska won at least nine games in every season from 1969-2001. That number won’t be enough to satisfy the Cornhuskers and their coach this year.

Looking to continue his program’s return to national prominence, second-year coach Bo Pelini leads the No. 24 Huskers into Memorial Stadium on Saturday night when they host Florida Atlantic.

Under coaches Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne, Nebraska went 356-69-5 and won five national titles from 1962-2007. However, after Osborne retired following the Cornhuskers’ 1997 national championship, Nebraska was unable to maintain its status as one of the nation’s elite programs under Frank Solich and then Bill Callahan.

Pelini is determined get Nebraska back to that level. After guiding the Huskers to a 9-4 record and co-Big 12 North title in 2008, a season capped by a 26-21 win over Clemson in the Gator Bowl, the 41-year-old coach has higher aspirations for this year.

“We’re not in the business of celebrating nine-win seasons at Nebraska,” Pelini said. “You know, we won’t be satisfied until we win them all, until we’re playing for a national championship. How close we are to that, I don’t know.

“I believe we have enough resources, enough talent to compete with everybody on our schedule. I think we will be a better football team. How that plays into wins and losses, we’ll see that in December.”

Pelini signaled he was serious about restoring Nebraska’s proud tradition when he dismissed junior running back Quentin Castille last month for numerous violations of team rules.

Castille was second on the team with 467 rushing yards in 2008. The move will likely lead to more playing time for freshman Rex Burkhead and sophomore Marcus Mendoza - who was recruited as a running back but moved to wide receiver - behind starter Roy Helu Jr.

“We can do all kinds of things with him, Rex and Roy,” offensive coordinator Shawn Watson said of Mendoza. “Those guys all possess that kind of ability to go out on the perimeter because they have receiver skills when it comes to getting in and out of breaks and being an explosive player.”

Junior Zac Lee will be charged with getting them the ball. The son of former NFL quarterback Bob Lee, the 22-year-old QB has thrown two passes in his college career.

While there might be questions about Lee’s ability to run the offense, Pelini’s defense could develop into one of the most formidable in the Big 12. A year after giving up 476.8 yards per game under Callahan - 112th in the Football Bowl Subdivision - Nebraska improved to 55th in 2008, allowing 349.9 per contest.

Senior nose tackle Ndamukong Suh had a team-best 76 tackles and 7.5 sacks to earn first-team All-Big 12 honors in 2008.

“I think (the players are) starting to feel the momentum that we had at the end of last year,” Pelini said. “I think they’re starting to understand what they can become as a football team and where this football program needs to be headed. They also know there’s a lot of work in front of us to get where we want to be.”

That first step comes against a Florida Atlantic team led by a coach familiar to Nebraska fans.

Howard Schnellenberger, who guided Miami to its first national title with a 31-30 victory over Osborne and the Huskers in the 1984 Orange Bowl, has been the Owls’ only coach during their nine years as a program.

Schnellenberger led Florida Atlantic to a 7-6 record in 2008 and a 24-21 win over Central Michigan in the Motor City Bowl.

Rusty Smith earned MVP honors in that game after going 20 of 35 for 306 yards and two touchdowns. The fifth-year senior is the Sun Belt Conference’s all-time leading passer with 8,198 yards.

Nebraska and Florida Atlantic have never met.

Woah... skull the bull. I am a die hard fan and have season tickets, but come on, this year is gonna be a contest. All these teams (mainly mizzou, ku, and possibly cu) gunning for us. Mizzou scares me a tad bit, they obviously have a QB noticing them whip up on Illinois. Besides, any husker fan knows all the Big XII north football teams are there to beat NU. They are only there to get in our way. 2001 NU @ cu, and one time Mizzou tried that in '97

MdMorford, to be exact we have had 4 good seasons in the last 100. I will be the first to admit that the history of Kansas football has pretty much been garbage and that Nebraska has an incredible tradition. I went to a game in Lincoln and was amazed at what class NU fans have. Kansas fans besides myself are actually classy, except of course when the University of Missouri comes to town. If you have never been to a sporting event in Columbia you obviously do not know that it is actually possible to fill an entire stadium (or arena) with @holes. Mizzou's history at football is pretty much identical to Kansas (with the exception of the fact that MU has never won a BCS game), but they have always strutted around like they are some kind of a big-time football program. Nebraska is a bunch of corn-fed hicks but at least they know it

Wow...Kansas fans have a few good seasons out of the last 100 and they have become as impudent as Miami fans. Will let the football game do the talking rather than get into an incredibly silly battle of words with "No" and "G." I am guessing they will not show up on here anyway after the results of the game. And "Julie," are you asking us to quit "winning" or "whining"...could I ask you to go do a spell check to clarify.

Julie L: get off the computer and go back to doing your duties in the kitchen. Mizzou beat a bad Illinois team and has nothing to be excited about. We beat you guys in Arrowhead last year when you had your best three players by Chase Daniel, Chase Coffman, and Jeremy Maclin. Those guys are gone, the guys replacing them are not nearly as good, and all of our players are back. We can lose to Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech but still win the division when we beat you at the end of the season. You will definitely lose at home to Texas and on the road to OK State, which means our win over you will seal the division at 5-3. MUCK FIZZOU

What I can't believe is all the stupidity of how people talk trash. The Huskers are getting better, and someday soon they will be back in the hunt every year, a real contender for the National Championship. Whe you have coaches that care and respect traditions and the way things are done then pride comes, when you have pride you work harder and strive for excellence.

Soon the Huskers will have that all again.

I think any Nebraska fan is a damn sight happier with Bo than Callahan. Kansas may win but they won't be scoring that many points against Nebraska. If we win as many games as last year things will be fine as long as the games lost are close.Itansd maybe in two years time we will challenge for the Championship, who knows.

Fred_Mac yeah yeah Nebraska was great heard it all before but my happy self was in Miami to see my Jayhawks WIN a BCS game, I know Nebraska has not been good enought to even be in one or considered for one, when was it Big 8 days that you guys mattered. Dont be running down the Hawks or their coach they have done a hell of a job and yes we have had more success in the last few years, settle down and I am glad 99 per cent of the Nebraska fans have more class than you.

fredmac: nebraska won 9 games last year buddy.... do your research.
jayhawk G: nice name, first of all. second, last time we were in lawrence the idiotic bill callahan was finishing up his epic blunder of a season that got him and his pal pederson fired and your offense lit up the scoreboard against a bunch of guys that didnt even wrap up to tackle. most high school freshmen tackle better than they did. most of them were fat and slow anyway. kevin cosgrove's swiss cheese defense is now in minnesota, so good luck putting up 70 on pelini's D. also, i find it funny you say that nebraska's defense sucks-- we had a much better defense than KU last year and our defense was trying to break habits that cosgrove poisoned them with. this game pitted our defense against a quality quarterback and an overall underrated offense, and we did not once break. and i know you think so but suh cannot carry our defense. we also created 3 turnovers and held rusty smith very well in check. and your defense? you lost all 3 starting linebackers on a defense that was already average, even for the big 12. i guess what im saying is that if i were you i wouldnt be so@#$%y and guarantee a blowout, because i dont even know if kansas will beat missouri. i dont even know if nebraska will beat missouri. kansas and nebraska both won 49-3, and i gota admit that if FAU played northern colorado, FAU would win. so that has to tell you something. the nebraska/kansas game will be close. dont talk trash about a team that beat you last year and has thoroughly dominated you for years upon end.

I think the Huskers still have a ways to go. Your recruiting has been down and frankly I don't see Bo Pepe as anywhere close to Devaney or Osborne.

Once you lose the edge it's tough to get it back. Your program is improving, but it is far from the juggernaut it once was. Get used to 8 win seasons for awhile yet.

Jayhawks are gonna rip Nebraska a new one. Without Ganz, and while playing in Lawrence, KU is gonna roll all over Nebraska and probably put their 2nd team QB in the 4th quarter as well.

I think that the Huskers played a good game, with alot of young talent. Most of you probably don't remember when Bob Devany was coach at Nebraska. Those were the years! 1970 and 1971 back to back National Champions. From what I have read this team could have a lot of balance. I hope that they do well and have an exceptional year, and keep getting better. I think they will win the Big 12 North. By the way the only time I liked Kansas football team was when Gayle Sayers played.

Jayhawk G - why are you even here? Do you really think we care what you think? It takes no guts at all to talk trash under an alias. Be assured you will be nowhere near here if KU loses. This is a team game, not a game played on a computer based on individual matchups. Get a clue. Save your talking until after the game is played. Moron. Kansas has the best receiving corps in the nation?? What a joke. Are you on drugs?

"Skull the bull" lets match the two teams up. Who has a better QB? Kansas by far. Wide Receivers? Kansas has the best receiving corps in the nation, including the best wide receiver in the nation. We have a better o-line, and better depth at running back. Nebraska has one great player, that d-lineman, but the rest of their defense sucks. Our pass rush has improved, we are great against the run, and our secondary is going to be solid. Darrell Stuckey is an all-american at safety. Nebraska has one great player while Kansas has about 5 or 6. Talk to me in a few months after we smoke your @$$ in Lawrence. And no, I'm not talking about when your crappy basketball team plays our national championship basketball team
