I've been a New York Giants fan since I was kid in the 1970s. I loved the team so much that when they played in the Super Bowl in 1987 at the Rose Bowl in beautiful Pasadena, California, I was there for the game. It was a great experience, as we defeated the Denver Broncos, 39-20.
My favorite college football team, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, also make this list of college football teams with the most players in this year's Super Bowl. The list contains 11 teams.
College Football Teams With the Most Players in Super Bowl XLVI
1. Boston College Eagles - 5
The Boston College Eagles from Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, have the most players of any college in Super Bowl XLVI in 2012. One might guess that the Patriots would have more BC players, since BC is near Boston, but that is not the case. DB Will Blackmon, LB Mark Herzlich, LB Mathias Kiwanuka, OL Chris Snee from the Giants, and DT Ron Brace on the Patriots all played for BC.
So the Giants have four BC players and the Patriots have one. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin coached at BC from 1991 to 1993, and Chris Snee is his son-in-law, having married Tom Coughlin's daughter, Kate.
When the Giants drafted Snee, I wondered about the pick because of his relationship with coach Coughlin, but Snee has been a pretty good player for us. Even Coughlin himself wondered if he could coach his son-in-law, but it's worked so far.
T-2. Fresno State Bulldogs - 4
Most people would not guess that the Fresno State Bulldogs would have four players in the 2012 Super Bowl, but they do. TE Bear Pascoe and QB David Carr are on the Giants roster, while G Logan Mankins and C Ryan Wendell are on the Patriots.
T-2. Florida Gators - 4
The four Florida Gators in the Super Bowl are DE Justin Trattou on the Giants, and DT Gerrard Warren, LB Brandon Spikes and TE Aaron Hernandez on the Patriots.
T-2. Michigan Wolverines - 4
C David Bass and WR Mario Manningham are on the Giants, while QB Tom Brady and P Zoltan Mesko are on New England from Michigan.
T-5. Rutgers Scarlet Knights - 3
My favorite college football team, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, have three players playing in Super Bowl XLVI. Free safety Nate Jones, CB Devin McCourty and WR Tiquan Underwood are all on the New England Patriots. There were 21 Rutgers players active in the NFL in 2011.
T-5. Miami Hurricanes - 3
Free Safety Antrel Rolle and SS Keny Phillips are playing for the Giants, while hefty DT Vince Woolfork is playing for the Patriots from the University of Miami.
T-5. Troy Trojans - 3
WR Jerrel Jurnigan, kicker Lawrence Tynes, and DE Osi Umenyiora are all on the Giants and all played for the Troy Trojans. Another college team most people would never think of for Super Bowl players.
T-5. Tennessee Volunteers - 3
SS Deon Grant on the Giants, and LB Jerod Mayo and DT Shaun Ellis from the Patriots all played for the Tennessee Volunteers in college.
T-5. Arkansas Razorbacks - 3
Guards Tony Ugoh and Mitch Petrus on the Giants, and one of Tom Brady's backup QB's Ryan Mallett all played football for the Arkansas Razorbacks.
T-5. LSU Tigers - 3
CB Cory Webster on the Giants, and RB's Kevin Faulk and Stevan Ridley are from LSU.
T-5. Michigan State Spartans - 3
WR Devin Thomas and LB Greg Jones from the New York Giants, and QB Brian Hoyer on New England all played for the Michigan State Spartans.
