Tennessee Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

Normally, the loss of two assistant coaches prior to a bowl game would rank as big news. For the Volunteers, it’s merely a blip compared to the latest controversy surrounding coach Lane Kiffin’s program.

The NCAA is reviewing the activities of Orange Pride, a student organization comprised primarily of women, two of whom drove close to 200 miles to attend a high school game in South Carolina featuring two players committed to UT, as well as another player whom Kiffin is recruiting.

If it’s determined the trip was paid for by the school, it could be construed as a major violation by the NCAA, the type of goof for which many Kiffin haters around the SEC have been waiting.

Assuring Tennessee fans that the program has done nothing illegal, Kiffin is taking his team through the early stages of preparation for the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Virginia Tech on Dec. 31 in Atlanta.

“I think the guys have come out with great energy,” Kiffin said after practice on Dec. 11. “They understand the importance—we have team meetings every day to make sure they understand—that we have a great practice.”

Assistants Eddie Gran and Frank Wilson are leaving for Florida State and LSU, respectively, leaving the Vols two coaches short for the bowl game. Kiffin said those spots won’t be filled until January.

While the circumstances aren’t ideal, UT and its fans are excited about the bowl trip, particularly since it didn’t go to a bowl game last year.

The school sold out all 17,500 of its tickets and probably could have sold twice as many. Now, it’s up to their team to produce a performance that proves the controversy du jour wasn’t a distraction.

NOTES, QUOTES

• At this time last year, Tennessee was in complete rebuilding mode. The Vols’ long-time coach who brought them the 1998 national championship had been fired, replaced by a brash new coach who quickly made waves with his mouth and his tactics.

Lane Kiffin’s first season has been a success in ways that go beyond a 7-5 overall record. Tennessee improved as the season progressed, overcame a slew of injuries to win four of its last five games and earned a berth in the Chick-fil-A Bowl against Virginia Tech.

Kiffin’s reaction to the bowl bid was typically big-picture, focused mainly on the opportunity to play in what’s becoming one of the program’s recruiting strongholds—Atlanta.

“We have many players from Atlanta and the state of Georgia,” he said. “It’s a great location for us to be in this postseason.”

• The game also figures to be strong safety Eric Berry’s last for the Vols, as he’s likely headed for the NFL and first-round riches in the spring. He won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back.

Scouting The Offense:   A source of consternation in the first month, the offense improved greatly when Jonathan Crompton morphed from punch line into a legitimate SEC quarterback. His 26 touchdown passes lent much-needed balance to a Montario Hardesty-led attack. Hardesty has rushed for 1,306 yards and 12 touchdowns. Wide receivers Gerald Jones and Denarius Moore turned into reliable targets down the stretch.

Scouting The Defense:   Working around multiple injuries, coordinator Monte Kiffin fielded one of the nation’s top units. Its only real weakness was stopping the run, even though DT Dan Williams, LB Rico McCoy and SS Eric Berry were three of the SEC’s best. Virginia Tech TB Ryan Williams and QB Tyrod Taylor will severely test this unit. The secondary has played well but must deny the Hokies their big pass plays.

Matchup To Watch:   Tennessee SS Eric Berry vs. Virginia Tech TB Ryan Williams—Playing closer to the scrimmage line has made Berry a bigger factor against the running game. He’ll have to be at his best against Williams, who has rushed for 1,538 yards and scored 20 touchdowns as a freshman. Berry is certain to be psyched for this appearance in his hometown, especially since it might be his last game for the Vols.

Other Key Matchups:

• Tennessee SS Eric Berry vs. Virginia Tech QB Tyrod Taylor.

Odds are that Berry will be a “spy” against the mobile Taylor, who’s improved as a passer but can break a defense’s back with his scrambling. Berry is a hard-hitting, sure-tackling, two-time All-American who will look to finish his college career with a bang.

• Tennessee’s pass protection vs. Virginia Tech’s pass rush.

With ends Jason Worilds and Nekos Brown, as well as LB Cody Grimm, the Hokies can bring heat from everywhere. But the Volunteers allowed the fewest sacks in the SEC, a prime reason why QB Jonathan Crompton suddenly blossomed into a viable threat in the last seven games.

• Tennessee’s kick coverage vs. Virginia Tech’s special teams.

Tech KR Dyrell Roberts led the nation in yards per return for part of the season, while PR Jayron Hosley was equally dangerous. The Vols were shaky at times covering kicks, exasperating coach Lane Kiffin. A similar performance in this game could mean a Hokie victory.

Quote To Note:   “We continue to develop younger guys and it gives us a chance to look at the film and experiment with other things.”—Coach Lane Kiffin on early bowl practices.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Bowl Breakdown:   Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech, Chick-fil-A Bowl, Dec. 31, Atlanta—The schools are less than four hours apart but haven’t met since the 1994 Gator Bowl, a 45-23 Vol win behind freshman QB Peyton Manning. UT is returning to the bowl scene after sitting out last year. The Hokies are in their 17th straight bowl game and are shooting for a sixth straight 10-win season.

Players To Watch:

TB Montario Hardesty—The senior rushed for a team-high 1,306 yards and scored a dozen touchdowns, leading the offense to respectability. Hardesty has been a workhorse, averaging 22 carries per game.

QB Jonathan Crompton—Over the last seven games, Crompton has turned from reviled to respected, becoming one of the SEC’s top quarterbacks. He finished his senior season with 26 touchdown passes.

LB Rico McCoy—The senior has been one of the SEC’s top linebackers, consistently recording double-figure tackles since the loss of MLB Nick Reveiz. McCoy will be particularly motivated to end his career with a bang.

SS Eric Berry—The junior will be stoked in what figures to be his last game. Berry is an Atlanta-area product and will want to put on a good show, which might include setting the NCAA record for most career interception yardage.

Roster Report:

• CB Marsalous Johnson (thumb) returned for the season finale at Kentucky after missing the previous three games. Johnson adds depth to a secondary that’s been ravaged by injuries.

• DT Wes Brown (knees) has played all year despite nagging pain that has often kept him from practicing. The month off between the season finale and the bowl game should help him be more productive.

    To Robert H:
I've read many of your post about the Tennessee Volunteers team. Lane Kiffin HAS done a great job with the Vols, but he is gone now. Any predictions on Dooley?? I live in Alabama. Not many here will discuss with me.

ATTENTION!: Big Orange can be dangerous. Approach with extreme caution. Remember to wear safety gear.

    JUST in

    Kiffin leaves Tennessee for USC

I supported Lane the whole year and thought he was the right man for the Job at TN, this is a total shock and I for one and Extremely disappointed. This will set the VOL’s back at least two years, as a lifelong VOL fan this is the biggest blow over the last few years.

His father, respected defensive coach Monte Kiffin, and longtime USC assistant Ed Orgeron also will leave Tennessee to join him, which hurts even more.

As it turns out, Georgia has committed just as many NCAA secondary violations as Tennessee in the past year. Why arent they on ESPN and New York Times?

The Bulldogs’ were as follows (by date reported by UGA):
    • Jan. 9: Matthew Stafford and three teammates received complimentary tickets to an NFL game from an NFL player, a Level I violation.
    • Jan. 21: Assistant coaches Mike Bobo and John Jancek left messages for the same prospect on consecutive days (can call just once a week), a Level II violation.
    • March 17: New England Patriots tight end and UGA alum Ben Watson (deemed representative of athletics interest) telephoned signee Arthur Lynch to congratulate him on signing with the Bulldogs, a Level I violation.
    • July 13: Coaching staff members “inadvertently” called prospective student-athletes (PSAs) before the permissible period and twice called the same PSA in the same week, a Level I violation.
    • August 5: A recruiting graduate assistant telephoned high school coaches regarding transcripts, a Level I violation.
    • Nov. 17: A coaching staff member evaluated a PSA more than once during the fall evaluation period (level undetermined as incident is still being evaluated by NCAA regulators).

Tennessee’s violations in general involved Kiffin more directly but also are considered secondary:
    • In February he mentioned prospect Bryce Brown by name in a live radio interview.
    • He mentioned prospect J.C. Copeland on his Twitter page.
    • Twice the Vols were cited for impermissible game-day simulations.
    • Kiffin was videotaped on an “Outside the Lines” piece while meeting with two recruits.
    • Improper contact by Kiffin, according to the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

Via a Freedom of Information request, how many violations the Bulldogs had committed in the same period. You may be surprised to find out that they’ve also had six secondary violations in the last year.
For some reason Alabama and Auburn always tap-dance around these things and Vanderbilt always gets out of it because it’s a private school.

Georgia Tech reported that it had no NCAA violations since Dec. 1, 2008.

The best Google could do for me was a June 28th story in the Knoxville News-Sentinel that had Tennessee “leading” the SEC with six secondary’s, followed by Ole Miss (5), LSU (4), Georgia (then with 3), Mississippi State (3), South Carolina (3), Arkansas (2), Florida (2) and Kentucky (0). (Note that Bama and Auburn aren’t included for the reason they will not disclose any information.) LSU, it should be noted, is also being investigated in an ongoing NCAA probe.

Since the article was written FLA has had 2 more confirmed secondary violations and there is a probe on Arrests and traffic violations that have been ongoing by the NCAA. Let’s not forget about the eye gouging and the DUI. Meyers being fined this year and let’s not even talk about the Meyers situation.

I thought someone may enjoy knowing the truth

On the 19th of Dec, UT self-imposed the penalty of won’t bring interns on the road with them during recruiting visits and the SEC concurred with the action. So one investigation is closed, and the Tennessee coach and the Vol’s won’t be allowed to bring interns on the road with them during recruiting visits after Steve Rubio’s trip to St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., spurred an internal review by UT of its practices. As I predicted wasn’t in the NY Times or on ESPN not even on the websites. I waited for almost a month to see is something would be said.

One investigation (Hostess-gate) is pending in reality there is no investigation only an inquiry in which nearly every Vol committed recruit and their family has been questioned. Nothing has been found and no letter to the University has been issued. I would bet the VOL wont received even a secondary violation , but nothing will come out till after National Signing Day. Again UT has still not received an official letter of inquiry from the NCAA regarding the activities of the members of the university’s Orange Pride.

    Oh by the way:

    http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ap-t25-floridawrap-up&prov=ap&type=lgns

"Meyers THINKS he will return in 2010"

I was just trying to pay attention to how truthful Meyers was again “Not”

I was unable to see on AFN, did Meyers resign? Leave of Absents? Tell his family? Not tell his family? FLA takes him to the hospital? Wife calls 911 for an ambulance? Wont hurt recruiting? didnt want him anyway? I was just wondering because everyday a new story happens. I have a new reality show for TV it is called “How the Gator turns”.

I guess according to the article poated above website, he gut is now telling him and he is back to family and health.

    Stay tuned for tomorrows story

Florida faced varying levels of adversity just about every week. "Meyer even called it the “year of stuff.”
It included flulike symptoms that ravaged the team; Tebow’s concussion; hijacked cell phone numbers; linebacker Brandon Spikes’ eye-gouging incident; Meyer’s $30,000 fine for criticizing officials; defensive end Carlos Dunlap’s drunk-driving arrest; some close games; a few controversial calls; and what seemed like a season-long offensive slump. (They forgot to add the arrests and traffic tickets in the article)

What I feel sorry for is the FLA recruits that now have committed and Meyers won’t be there next year.

Last there is Jesse Scroggins who committed to USC and all year talked about the VOL’s secondary violations but USC is facing several Major Violations now that Coach Carroll is leaving I wonder what he is thinking now as well as the other commitments.

VT played an outstanding game and congratulations to VT Williams on setting the records.

There were three major turning points in the game:

The first one came with 9 seconds left in the half and the score tied the VOL defense, thinking as did the announcers that VT would kneel on the ball and go into half tied threw a long pass to the two and then made the field goal giving VT a 17-14 lead and the momentum a half time.

Second the dropped pass for a sure six by the VOL receiver that would have made it a 3 point game, the VOL’s ended up punting and VT scored again.

Third with a two score lead the VOL’s had to pass, this allowed VT to pin their ears back and rush the passer which lead to 6 sacks the most the VOL’s have given up all year.

I really enjoyed watching the game and the VOLs played their hearts out all season, good luck to all the seniors from both teams in whatever you’re going to do in life and the juniors that will be going to the NFL draft.

Thank you for some great games, this year.

I was wrong in my prediction this week but still enjoyed the season.

    Go Vol’s

Get some recruits and get ready for next year.

This is what I had posted on the team report page for this game (I posted on the 26th):

The 12th Ranked VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES (9-3) 2nd in the ACC Coastal Verse the TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS (7-5) 2nd in the SEC West in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31

When you look at this game this may be other than the National Championship game the best matched Bowl game on paper to see:

HOKIES Hokies are ranked 55th in the nation on offense verse the 48th ranked Vols offense, on defense HOKIES is ranked 14 where as the Vols are ranked 18th. The Vols have a balanced attack now on offense where in the beginning of the year was run dominate in contrast the Hokies were a Pass team and have developed a good running game as the season progressed.

To break it down even further it will be Crompton for the VOL’s going against the 6th rated passed defense in the nation, Crompton has thrown 26 TD passes this year but has had 12 INT’s as the year has progressed has developed into a outstanding QB.

Rushing the VOL’s run attack lead by Hardesty and his 12 TD and 1306 yards will be facing 52th ranked rush defense if the VOL’s are to win this game the run must be established early.

Hokies QB Tyrod Taylor with is 12 TD and 4 INT will be facing the ranked passed defense lead by Erik Berry who in all likelihood will be playing his final college game and should be a top 5 pick in the NFL draft. The thing about Taylor is he can run and the VOLs have has problems in the past with QB’s that can run, expect Berry to spy him all game, hopefully Berry will get a INT and returns it to set the NCAA record, this could be his last chance.

Hokies Outstanding Running back Ryan William enters the game with 1538 yards rushing and 19 TD and will be facing 58th ranked rushing defense that has had to adjust to injuries all year long but should be healthy for this game.

The big stat that stands out in this game is Kickoff return game both teams are equal on the return yards but on return defense the Hokies are ranked 21st where as the VOL’s are 88th and the same is true for the punt stats, so the VOL’s must dramatically improve their special teams coverage play for this game.

This game will come down to Defense and turnovers, the VOL’s don’t turn the ball over much and have improved trough out the year both defensively and offensively. Both teams are as healthy as they can be going into this game. Both lines for each team are fairly equal however Hokies give up a average of 3 sacks a game where as the VOL’s give up one on the average. Hokies however lost one of their starting Cornerback this week due to being academically ineligible.

To Win the game the VOL’s must improve on special teams, stop the run and control the ball.

To Win the game the HOKIES must Stop the run, put pressure on Crompton and control the ball.

The VOL’s will win in a close game dominated by defense, expect the VOL’s to go for 4th down conversions and not rely on any sort of kicking game.

Prediction: VOL’s 21/ HOKIES 17 won in the 4th quarter.

    Let the new era continue

Just a prediction from Afghanistan, I get to watch this game on AFN

For all you that were wondering about Tyler Bray and his stats:

Tyler Bray has the ability to avoid the rush, sees and throws the ball way downfield, and shows great leadership qualities.

Tyler Bray, in the Central Section Division IV championship game 47-13 victory over Taft; Tyler completed 19-of 23 passes for 259 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran for 36 yards and a sixth score.

Bray passed for 3,321 yards this season and 41 TDs, and rushed for 171 yards and two more scores. He also punted for a 36.8 yard average, including a 65-yarder.

Last season, Bray threw for 2,411 yards and 26 TDs, and in 2007-08, the three-year varsity starter had 1,726 yards and 18 touchdowns, his 1st year.

Tyler Bray a career of 7,458 yards and 85 scoring strikes.

In case you missed some of the new faces at practice Yesterday:

3 Star QB Matt Simms 6’3” 215 JC transfer

4 Star QB Tyler Bray 6’6” 187 HS this is great he will start learning the system and hit the weight room, he is the most accurate passer that has excellent touch and can throw any type pass asked of him. He is also an intelligent player that will make the right reads and not throw into double coverage, of all the QB recruits in the nation, he will really push the other QB’s for the starting job next year. He has the most long-term potential of any quarterback in the country and is a tough competitor that sees the whole field and already has enough arm strength to make the tough throws.

4 Star WR Kenbrell Thompkins 6’3” 190 and runs a 4.4 forty the best JC WR in the nation. Under Kibby Brown should become a great WR

4 Star WR Matt Milton 6’6” 192 4.57 forty speed creates major miss matches as a WR will push for stating time this spring and under Kibby Brown should become an all freshman SEC team selection.

3 Star RB/FB Channing Fugate 6’2” 225 I think he is dramatically under rated, don’t have any stats on him this year but as a junior ran for 3,052 years and 36 touchdowns, he will gain weight and should become a highbred fullback, who has the ability to block or break a run for a big gain at anytime, oh he also can catch and was used as a WR at times.

Several other recruits were projected to early enroll but I didn’t have any information they had yet

For all that you were wondering about SEC rules here is the answer:

Greg Sankey, SEC associate commissioner for compliance, told the Birmingham News a while back. “I have a 427-page rule manual with thousands of interpretations. The reality of the regulatory culture is you’re going to have violations — circumstances where people go outside the boundaries of the rules.

I like the part of 1000's of interpretations, so maybe you can understand the Kiffin statement on Meyers last year of violating the rules.

Here is a very interesting article; I wonder why NY Times isn’t reporting this?

Alabama clearly got beat by the vols and ucla would have if later in season. Enjoy bama and thank the Vols and zebras for you being in the sec championship game. Watch film and give Florida hell, Teababy likes to run when a lane is cleared for him. If you play like you did aganist Tn you shouldn't get beat by about 23 or 24. That's right Florida will eat your lunch baby...No NC game for bama. GO VOLS !!!

In Sports, when no one hates you; when no one badmouths you, you probably suck and are no threat to anyone. We Vols Fans don't give a RAT'S A$$, what YOU think of Lane Kiffin! We LOVE him! He and his staff, are going to rebuild this team.
He took over a DISASTER, from Phillip Fulmer and crew. In less than a year, he has coached them, within reach of a bowl game. Keep on hating him people! We LOVE him! Go Vols!

Trainmaster is simply a Tide troll who is still ass hurt over having to languish away while huge underdog Tennessee's special team set up for a game winning field goal to beat the No 2 team in the country on their own turf.

What other reasons would he have for posting on a Yahoo board where the Tide was the subject of the article and subsequent discussion?

trainmaster0816 proves the point that Lane is doing a great job. The Vol haters are afraid of Kiffin. If they didn't fear him they wouldn't attack him. Poor, poor trainmaster0816 I feel sorry for you. You stay awake every night worried about what's going to happen to your team in years to come. Don't worry, your job at Wendy's won't ever pay you enough for you to afford a ticket to a game; but you can still watch on TV.

To comment on trainmaster0816's last comment of Kiffin being an idiot. Seriously before you call out a recruiting genius, and man that is coming in rebuilding a team that has totally fallen off the map the last several years, you may want to see of this page offers spell check... Your spelling and grammar is so jacked up in your comment that maybe you need to not comment on other's decision until you can spell simple 5th grade words... I personally think Lane is doing a decent job in REBUILDING this team and in the years to come, we will be a top contender in the SEC... Coach Kiffin is building a house in Knoxville as he did assisting at USC... GO VOLS...

Another Kiffin recruit now charged with shop lifting, again, Kifin is an idiot, yeah he, wiat let me rephrase that his coaching staff can recruit but dont give a ras ass about the character of kids they are recruiting. This is the fourth player all Freshman that Lame recruited to get in trouble. Lane is a moron coach, runs his damn mouth, hides behind his daddy, the only thing he can do is recruit and if half the recruits are getting arrested in the first year. Yeah go Vols you Vol fans must be so proud of that mediocre record again this year and how well Kiffin and his overpaid staff are managing the team. Man maybe you can make the Independence or Liberty Bowl, maybe not.

I don’t know if they were distracted or what happened but the Defense that was so outstanding couldn’t stop the Old Miss Rebels and McCluster.

Good Luck Old Miss Rebels for the rest of the year.

I more than likely won’t be able to write for the next two weeks but will be able to watch the games while on Leave (Vacation) in TN.

Go VOL’s you still have a change for a great bowl if you win out.

Wow. Three players arrested for armed robbery. Better serve them up some 1/2 game suspensions.
