INSIDE SLANT

The Gamecocks are turning out to be what most thought they’d be—a middle-of-the-pack SEC team in the midst of another late-season fade.

South Carolina hits the bye week having lost three straight, including Saturday’s frustrating defeat to No. 1 Florida.

There have been areas of improvement in Steve Spurrier’s fifth season. Redshirt sophomore Stephen Garcia is a better quarterback and looks to have a bright future. Freshman receiver Alshon Jeffry is a blossoming star, and the defense has been better than expected, especially the young secondary.

But there are still several areas in which the Gamecocks have consistently struggled.

South Carolina ranks last in the SEC in rushing, just like they have the past two seasons, and appears to still be searching for a go-to running back.

The offensive line has been erratic, with new coach Eric Wolford constantly shuffling the lineup in hopes of finding a stable unit. He hasn’t, yet. The Gamecocks are last in the SEC in sacks allowed at three per game.

So, heading into next week’s regular-season finale against Clemson, the Gamecocks once again are stuck in the middle of the SEC, heading to a mid-level bowl game with a record around .500.

NOTES, QUOTES

• South Carolina’s bowl projections are all over the place. Possibilities include the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., against a Big 12 opponent; the PapaJohns.com Bowl in Birmingham against a Big East team; and the Music City Bowl in Nashville against an ACC team.

Series History:   Clemson leads South Carolina 65-34-4 (last meeting, 2008, 31-14 Clemson).

Scouting The Offense:   Which running back will be the guy against Clemson? Kenny Miles had emerged as the top back midway through the season, but he fell out of favor with a sub-par performance against Arkansas. He was involved in a botched hand-off against Florida and then never saw the field again. Brian Maddox took over against the Gators and picked up 83 yards on 17 carriers. Regardless of who has been the top back, the Gamecocks have struggled to move the ball consistently on the ground. South Carolina is last in the SEC in rushing.

Scouting The Defense:   For a secondary with two first-year starting corners, the Gamecocks have to be extremely pleased. South Carolina ranks eighth in the nation in pass defense, allowing just over 160 yards per game. Freshman corner Stephon Gilmore, the 2008 South Carolina high school player of the year, led the team with 10 tackles against Florida.

Quote To Note:   “I think it’s night and day. Much better than he was than a year ago. I told him out there that he really throws the ball well and they have some excellent young receivers.”—Florida coach Urban Meyer, on South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia’s improvement.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Next Week  ‘S GAME: Clemson at South Carolina, Nov. 28—The Gamecocks have lost three in a row—and four of five—yet they could end up with a 7-5 regular season by beating their in-state rival. That wouldn’t be too bad for such a young team.

Keys To The Game:   South Carolina will spend its bye week trying to figure out how to slow down Clemson’s surging offense, led by the dynamic C.J. Spiller. Clemson rushed for 184 yards in last year’s 31-14 whipping of the Gamecocks.

Players To Watch:

QB Stephen Garcia—After getting sacked six times against Florida, Garcia needs to use the bye week to heal and shake off the two interceptions he threw against the Gators.

WR Alshon Jeffery—He’s a lock for the SEC All-Freshman team and could make a case for All-SEC. Jeffery leads the Gamecocks in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches.

LB Eric Norwood—The All-American linebacker will be playing the final home game of his illustrious career against Clemson next Saturday.

Roster Report:

• DE Cliff Matthews needed the bye week in a bad way, after playing much of the Florida game with a banged-up shoulder. He’s expected to be back a full strength against Clemson.

• Coach Steve Spurrier told GoGamecocks.com that he expects to give play-calling duties to quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus next season.

First to post 16, Spiller did something that half the secondary for Carolina did not do stay in school. For Carolina gwt use to it as this season Saunders will leave early and Jeffery and Gilmore will not stay four years. Carolina seems to frustrate the players into leaving early. Garcia is average at best and his numbers only look good due to Jeffery and brown making nice catches. Last week he passed for over 300 yards but almost half the yards came on two passes of 80 to Jeffery and 56 to Giles both on broken coverages. Tkae that away and he passed for like 150 yards and remember this team cannot run versus real competition. The will not crack 100 yards rushing in the next two games, at best split the games and head to Nashville or the .com bowl in Birmingham, great season Spurrier, really takiing the program to new heights. He better win 8 next year or Carolina might need to scrape the wonderous Spurrier era and find a good young coach to build the program for the long haul and not just a five-six year run as Spurrier, Holtz, and Scott have done.

Mojo, Parker will be in MLB next year and if wasn't for begging to get C.J. back they would be 3-6 and not 6-3. And Clemson will have 3 yrs of Garcia, Alshon jeffrey, Stephon Gilmore, Gurley, Giles and so on. Lets shock the world Game@#$%! 3-0 next 3 games, beginning with Fla.

Post 10 as I said a split at best vs Tenn. and Ark. and again a split at best with Flkorida and Clemson 8/4 if lucky, 7-5. Watch out next year this team is young but they cannnot win on the road 1-3 this season. Carolina homer need to be patient and realize this is not the year and that is coming from a Carolina grad that bleeds Tiger orange. I just hope this is not another late season collapse. A loss to Arkansas on saturday means no more wins this season for carolina.

I don't see how It's a split at best with arkansas and Tennesse, I see split at worst, maybe 2-0, Clemson's almost a sure thing, I'm not betting on a win at Florida, though.

Not sure how it was a moral victory or looked good to show no ability on offense against Alabama, the same team that gave up 20 to Kentucky two weeks ago but if it makes you feel better good. They won't let down against Vandy but the trips to Ark. and Tenn. are a split at best before coming home for Florida and Clemson, again a split at best. Carolina 8-4 with luck or 7-5 this season. Be on the ball next year though with the talent for 2010, this team has a chance to give Spurrier the only SEC East title he will get at Carolina.

Apparently there are moral victories. Enough coaches and writers saw the game to only drop S.C one poll position, and in one raise bama to number 1, (for beating little ole carolina at bama?). That's a moral victory if I ever saw one. Or at least a good rationalization to assuage my pain for a S.C loss. It does look good however, please no let downs with Vandy.

Looking forward to watching thursday game against ole miss.. I think the game@#$% have a good enough talent to beat ole miss.. We beat them last year and it came down to the wire, but if the game@#$% put pressure on the quarter back and cause turnovers it will be a good game and maybe a win. The offense is looking better, but special teams needs to stop the kick off runs early in the game.. Keep the turnovers down and step up on defense and special teams and a win would be no problem.. Norwood is doing great and I like watching him sac the quarter back.. That guy has a lot of talent when he plays each football game.. Garcia has stepped it up big and running the ball saturday against Florida atlantic was a very good decision.. Keep it up garcia and great things will come your way and for everybody els.. Good luck thursday. I will be watching it at the beach while on vacation.

I'm a lifelong SC fan, but for crying out loud...we will never win a big game! Spurrier just isn't the right guy. He has no ability to motivate players to perform at their best. I want to be proud of our team but I can't be proud of our coach!

I'm a huge SC fan. I'm guessing a 8 or 9 win season beating NC & SC state,Flordia Atlantic,Kentucky,Tennessee,Arkanas, and Vanderbilt. The big upsets we may win are Georgia and Clemson. The losses are most likely Ol'Miss ,Alabama, and Florida. Offense needs to step it up a little. Defense do what u do best.GO SC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seven wins will be tough because I see four lock losses Florida, Alabama, Georigia, and Ole Miss. Four tough games NC st., Clemson, Tenn., Arkansas. That means gotta win three of those four and not lose to Vandy or Kentucky, not easy for a Gamecock team with a lot of questions and young players. Seven wins would be good but do not be suprised if seven losees happens.
