INSIDE SLANT

A long time ago, LSU coach Les Miles coached in the Big Ten. His Capital One Bowl counterpart, Penn State’s Joe Paterno, has simply been coaching for a long time.

Two of the game’s most successful coaches will lead very similar squads against each other on Jan. 1 in Orlando, Fla.

Both teams are built to win with defense. The Nittany Lions rank fourth in the nation in scoring defense (11.8 points per game); the Tigers are 12th, having allowed only 16 points per game. Those defenses will look to apply heavy doses of pressure on the quarterbacks, Penn State veteran Daryll Clark and LSU sophomore Jordan Jefferson.

Both teams came up short against the best in their conference—Penn State lost to Iowa and Ohio State; the Tigers to Florida, Alabama and Mississippi—and will enter the game with sizable chips on their shoulders.

“We definitely have something to prove,” Penn State linebacker Josh Hull said. “We haven’t had a victory against a top 25 team this year and this game is going to provide a great opportunity to do that.”

And both teams have strong tradition and rabid fan bases that should provide an electric atmosphere.

“It’s gonna be a wild game,” Paterno said. “Their fans are as good as anybody’s in the country. And I feel the same way about our fans.”

Paterno leads all coaches with 23 all-time bowl victories. Miles has won a bowl game in each of his first four seasons at LSU.

NOTES, QUOTES

• It appeared for a time as if Penn State would play in BCS bowl games in consecutive seasons for the first time in team history.

Instead, the Nittany Lions will play in the Capital One Bowl, while the only two teams to defeat them this season will carry the Big Ten flag in the Rose and Orange bowls.

Penn State (10-2) was impressive in most of its games this season but was mistake-prone and dominated at the line of scrimmage in its two most important tests of the year, home losses to Iowa and Ohio State. Its New Year’s Day date with the Tigers, who had a similar season in the SEC, provides Penn State a chance to beat a ranked opponent for the first time this season.

Several Nittany Lions—quarterback Daryll Clark, linebacker Sean Lee, defensive tackle Jared Odrick and most likely linebacker Navorro Bowman and running back Evan Royster—will look to conclude their Penn State careers in fine fashion. But Joe Paterno will also need contributions from youngsters like wide receiver Derek Moye and safety Drew Astorino to pick up his 24th career bowl victory.

The Nittany Lions will have a chance to restore a bit of the Big Ten’s sagging national reputation by beating one of the SEC’s most consistent programs. Les Miles’ team, which won a national championship in 2006, has had consistency issues this season but has the athletes to give Penn State as tough a test as it has faced this year.

Paterno relished the chance to face the Tigers for the first time since the 1974 Orange Bowl, when the John Cappelletti-led Nittany Lions beat LSU 16-9.

“I have a good squad, a bunch of good kids,” Paterno said Sunday. “They deserve a great bowl, and we got one.”

Scouting The Offense:   When the Nittany Lions have rhythm and momentum, they’re difficult to stop. QB Daryll Clark has taken advantage of some capable targets and well-designed play calls to throw for 23 touchdowns and nearly 2,800 yards this season and RB Evan Royster gives the unit balance and consistency. But Penn State has had trouble getting in rhythm until the second half of many games and has struggled to protect Clark against quality defenses.

Scouting The Defense:   Tom Bradley’s unit has looked dominant at times and resourceful at others, but no one has been able to beat the Nittany Lions’ defense consistently this season. A veteran and dynamic front seven led by DT Jared Odrick and LB Navorro Bowman and Sean Lee has kept the pressure on the backfield and the Nittany Lions’ all-new secondary overcame injuries and some early communication troubles to round into a solid group.

Matchup To Watch:   Penn State’s defensive line vs. LSU’s offensive line. The Tigers allowed 35 sacks this season; the Nittany Lions, led by Jared Odrick’s six, had 35 QB sacks on defense.

Other Key Matchups:

Penn State’s defensive line vs. LSU’s offensive line.

Jared Odrick, the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year, was the most dominant defensive tackle the Nittany Lions have had in decades this season. Fellow DT Ollie Ogbu is underrated and ends Jack Crawford, Eric Latimore, Jerome Hayes and Sean Stanley provided steady pressure if not huge numbers (a combined 12 sacks). They will look to have their way with a Tigers front that allowed 35 sacks this season, the most in the SEC.

Penn State’s coverage units vs. LSU WR Trindon Holliday.

Penn State gave up yards by the dozen to opposing kickoff and punt returners this season, finishing 62nd in the nation in kickoff defense and 120th in punt return defense. The small (5-foot-7) but slippery Holliday averaged 17.7 yards per punt return, second in the nation, and 23.7 yards per kickoff return and will be a huge priority for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State QB Daryll Clark vs. LSU’s defensive backfield.

The Nittany Lions quarterback has thrown 23 touchdown passes this season to eight different receivers. But he’s also tossed 10 interceptions and has made some ill-advised throws into traffic. Clark will likely stay away from LSU CB Patrick Peterson, who has broken up 13 passes this season, but he will also need to be careful with safety Chad Jones, who has three interceptions.

Quote To Note:   “When everybody was speculating about bowl games, we talked it over with the team, and I said the best matchup for us would be if we could get LSU.”—Penn State coach Joe Paterno on playing LSU in the Capital One Bowl.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Bowl Breakdown:   Penn State vs. LSU, Capital One Bowl, Jan. 1—Two teams who had high hopes coming into the season but couldn’t get it done in their biggest conference games will square off with conference bragging rights on the line. The Nittany Lions have only faced the Tigers once—a 16-9 win in the 1974 Orange Bowl.

Players To Watch:

DT Jared Odrick—The Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year gets things started up front for Penn State’s defense, occupying blockers so his teammates can make plays in the running game and providing a dangerous inside rush during passing situations.

RB Evan Royster—The junior overcame illness and some spotty offensive line play this season to average 5.9 yards per carry. He was also an effective receiver when given the opportunity.

QB Daryll Clark—The senior set several school passing records this season but also failed to deliver in his team’s biggest games. Clark’s accuracy and his decision-making are the keys to the offense but he’ll need time to throw the ball.

LB Navorro Bowman—The junior outside linebacker will likely play his last game as a Nittany Lion before entering the NFL Draft. He recovered from an early-season groin injury to record 84 tackles in 10 games and also turned in two touchdowns on an interception return and a fumble return.

Roster Report:

• CB A.J. Wallace, who missed Penn State’s regular-season finale at Michigan State with concussion symptoms, will be ready to play in the Nittany Lions’ bowl game.

• WR Chaz Powell is still recovering from a sprained shoulder he suffered in the Indiana game and will miss at least a chunk of the bowl practices, though he could be ready in time for the bowl game.

• LG Johnnie Troutman did not play in Penn State’s last two regular-season games while suffering from a strained calf muscle but should be at full strength for the bowl game.

If head-to-head is soooooooooo frickin important, than yes, Iowa deserves to go to a BCS bowl.

All the talk about PSU's schedule being so weak, has anyone ever looked at Florida's schedule. Come on now....Charleston Southern, Troy, Florida International, Vanderbilt. FLUFF schedule?????? And this team is No.1 in the nation??? Yeah Florida can run up the scores on these teams and they get praise but as soon as someone else runs up the score against a weak oppenent they get nothing but criticism.

Who did Poopypants Joe payoff at USA Today & Harris to get them to move PSU up from 17th to 13th
and the AP from 19th to 12th. It had to be money because beating a 1-6 in conf team as lame as
Indiana 31-20 does not warrant that type of movement in the polls. Speaking of movements (as in bowel)
these poll movements had a direct impact on PSU moving from 19th to 14th in the Bowel er Bowl Championship Series standings since USA & Harris account for two thirds of the BCS. And quite
ironic since you can't qualify for a BCS bowl unless you finish in the TOP 14 of the BCS. (I think this is known as the Notre Dame rule) And guess what, now PSU is 14th. Go figure!
This BCS has become an utter farce, not that wasn't since Day 1.

Penn State is a solid team but were not up to the task of beating the Buckeyes. The QB is good but not all he needs to be. Joe Pa keeps the Nittany lions in the games. But when Joe Pa retires you better hire the best coach money can buy and recruit like heck.

for all you penn state haters, who cares what you think. penn state coaches and staff care more about there players than they do on winning. the school has more history in there little finger than you haters know. at least joe does the right thing when some of the players screw up. what other coach do you know would make the whole team clean the entire stadium, just because of a few players made a mistake. ill bet usc or your other big schools wouldnt do that. we have pride, maybe you should try some.

I have not read all the comments but it seems that nobody is mentioning the #1 reason for scheduling weak non-conference games. Thanks to the BCS strength of schedule means even less than it used to years ago. All you have to do is go undefeated. It does not really help you to play better teams. I love Penn State, always have and always will but it simply does not do much for the program to play really tough non conference opponents. This goes for all teams except for SEC teams. That conference is so good that you can play Alcorn St. 4 times and still have a tough schedule. I think the last several years of USC proves my point perfectly. The Big Ten is certainly weaker now than in the past but the PAC 10 is constantly sub par but yet USC still gets repect for their good records. There has not been one season in recent memory that the PAC 10 as a whole was any better than fourth out of the six BCS conferences. The Big East is a joke and is always last. The ACC and Pac 10 trade fourth and fifth most years.

All I have to say is Penn State has Alabama on it's schedule in 2010 and 2011. To all those haters out there, how is that for a "weak schedule?"

Just to rub it in alittle more...Penn State has the #2 recruiting class in the country for 2010. Soon to be the #1 recruiting class! Watch out for the lions the next 4 years!

Must be lonely in your world, Matt, with your little red Bosox logo, and blogging that you think Michigan will beat PSU --- THE WEEK AFTER PSU BEAT MICHIGAN!!! BTW - Penn State clobbered a Pac 10 school last year non-conference. Your BoSox are resting, go away and stop hating.

By the way -- "oh, yeah, comon gimme a break" defense is NOT really a winning point in an argument.

For those who missed Matt's comments:

I'm not a Penn St. hater I'm pretty neutral but I can't understand being ranked 13th when you haven't played one team in the top 25 yet. I mean c'mon Syracuse? Temple? Eastern Illinois? Illinois? Minnesota? The only good team that Penn St has played was Iowa and they......lost. I have a big feeling that Penn St. loses to Michigan this week. They haven't faced a team like Michigan yet. Michigan has a lot of speed and a lot of players to account for. If they couldn't handle Iowa, who only beat Michigan by 2 points, they won't handle Michigan. I don't think you can rank a team that didn't win in there only test of the year. They have one of the easiest schedules I've seen. Look at Miami's schedule: Florida St., Georgia Tech, Virgina Tech, Oklahoma in there first 4 games. Yes I know that 3 of them are in the conference but they still had the balls to play Oklahoma who was ranked 8th at the time. Need to stop avoiding the big time non conference games. Try to go out of the lines a little bit and get a true non conference challenge other than Temple, Eastern Illinois, and Syracuse. Have to play better talent if they want to seriously shoot for a championship. One it hurts there chances in the rankings and it hurts the team by not playing top notch talent. I would rather challenge my team than have them play horrible teams and not having to execute to the fullest because the teams aren't good. Not a good enough team to beat Michigan. Penn St. will be exposed this week, count on it. Like I said I'm not a hater, its just the truth.

I'm Iowa born, raised and living -- but I am a PSU fan. I see Iowa as the worst undefeated team on the planet. When Michigan, Ohio State -- even PSU to a certain extent last season -- dog-pile on their Big 10 opponents, the media points out how weak the conference is. But this season, Iowa is called plucky, resilient, blah-blah, ad infinitum. My theory is Kirk Ferentz has naked photos of the poll voters. Anyway, it doesn't seem to be affecting PSUs recruiting -- they're sitting at #2 on Rivals.com. 8-0 is great for Iowa fans -- now you know what it feels like to be a PSU fan!!! :)

...every team in the nation plays 2-4 cupcakes. Syracuse isn't back to elite status yet...true. But they're still in the Big East, and they're 3-4 including a win over northwestern, so you can't really call them a "cupcake" team. The MAC is also sincerely turning into a very very competitive conferece (why do you think SEC & Big-12 teams won't play them?). There are tons of kids in that conference that will be playing on Sunday. Can you say that for Chatanooga Tech or Louisiana LaFayette? Nope. The cupcakes down south are by far more "cupcake-y" than the ones we play. Minnesota is a Big Ten team. A tough, well coached one too. Saying PSU's schedule is soft cause they played Minnesota and Michigan is like calling Florida's schedule soft for playing teams like Mississippi & Arkansas. What was the score of the Gators vs the Razorbacks again?......haha! The hogs have a very potent offense n ow that they have Chad Henne, the Michigan transfer, running their offense. Suck it.

#46 nailed it. Iowa did not beat PSU...PSU beat PSU. If you'd have watched that game you'd know that. A blow out?...come on people. I know football fans are prone to hyperbole, but an 11 point victory where it was a one score game until the very end is a blow out? Get a clue. Can you honestly tell me that with the way both Iowa and PSU are playing right now that PSU wouldn't beat them if they were to play next week? Iowa barely fends-off michigan in Kinnick stadium...PSU crushes UM at the Big House. I don't think so. I think the entire team had the swine flu or something the week of the iowa game. This team knew they'd be great once they got clicking...unfortunaltey it just took one week to long to get that way. And if i hear one more comment about PSU's soft schedule i might puke. Every team in the nation plays a similar schedule....PSU just gets hammered in the media for it because, well, We Are Penn State...and haters love to hate.

Shawn, Penn State got smoked at home vs. Iowa? Did you watch the game? They played horribly, it had very little to do with Iowa and yet they were still in it late in the fourth. Unfortunately they would have lost to most teams that night. Iowa does not make mistakes and they deserve their ranking right now but it was all on Penn State for losing that game. The Michigan game won't be easy but if the offense can actually show up the rest of the year Penn State should win out with little problems. They are simply better than the teams left on the schedule and just need to be consistent. Go Lions!!

This will be PSU's biggest challange of the year. They got smoked by Iowa at home. UM went to Iowa and almost beat them. PSU hasnt won in the Big House in 13 years. And for the article calling UMs offense inconsistent. OK? I dont think a team that leads the con in scoring and rushing is incosistent. PSUs deffense is tough, but not fast enough to defend the spread of RR.We alll saw the depth of this offense last week. Yea it was Deleware state. But football is football, and any team who puts up 700 yards with 3rd and 4th stringers is impressive. My wife Graduated fromPSU and they are one of my favorites, but no chance at Michigan this week. UM41-PSU35
