Oklahoma Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

It’s almost always a good game when Oklahoma visits Texas Tech, and it figures to be again when two Big 12 South powers going through some rebuilding pains meet Saturday.

The Sooners are coming off a win in which they looked like a million bucks, smashing Texas A&M 65-10. But OU got a lot of help via turnovers, and after the Sooners scored 28 second-quarter points, Texas A&M seemed to lose interest.

Texas Tech is coming off a tough loss, 24-17, at No. 13 Oklahoma State.

Oklahoma (6-4, 4-2) and Tech are bowl eligible and might be playing for a better postseason appointment.

A Sooner team coached by Bob Stoops has never lost more than four regular-season games and likely won’t this season if he can get two more performances out of his team like the last one. However, that’s easier said than done.

The offensive line remains a huge question mark, even more so against an improving Texas Tech defense. False start penalties plagued the Sooners against Texas A&M, yet they overcame the flags against one of the Big 12’s worst defenses. It will be far more difficult Saturday.

“Second quarter, we still had too many penalties (against Texas A&M), so we’re still trying to work through that,” Stoops said. “I felt that way the week before. But as far as blocking, protecting and those type of things, they are improving.”

But is the improvement coming fast enough to go out a winner against the Red Raiders and highly ranked Oklahoma State a week from Saturday?

If OU can close out the regular season 8-4, it would be quite a feat considering where it was after a 10-3 loss at Nebraska. If the Sooners can’t do that, plain and simple, it would be Stoops’ worst season in Norman.

NOTES, QUOTES

• Coach Bob Stoops addressed a story that appeared in the Chicago Sun Times that said a source said Stoops had told confidants he would be interested in the Notre Dame job if Charlie Weis were to be forced out. “I don’t have any thoughts about it; there is nothing to talk about,” he said. “Notre Dame has a coach and I have a great job. People just make stuff up; I don’t need to comment on that. If there was some basis to anything, I would gladly comment on it. But just some guy making stuff up, I don’t need to comment on that.”

• PK Patrick O’Hara, a third-teamer heading into the Texas A&M game, ended up closing that game handling field goals and PATs. But it’s unclear which kicker Bob Stoops will go with Saturday at Texas Tech. It could be O’Hara, Jimmie Stevens or Tress Way. Stoops said Tuesday that practice hasn’t been a great indicator of kicking success in the games this season.

• The Sooners have scored 64, 45, 33, 42 and 65 points at home, and they have scored 13, 20, 13, 35 and 3 points away from home. Only at Kansas, a 35-13 victory, have the Sooners been able to get rolling away from Owen Field.

Series History:   Oklahoma leads Texas Tech 12-4 (last meeting, 65-21, Oklahoma).

Scouting The Offense:   The Sooners rolled last week against Texas A&M, but the task will be more difficult this week. WR Ryan Broyles is a big-play threat, and the Sooners have been inventive in finding ways to get the ball to TB DeMarco Murray. That combination should be able to click at home and on the road. In a season of huge injuries to playmakers, the Sooner offense is figuring out more ways to succeed.

Scouting The Defense:   The defense has looked bad only once all season, against Kansas State, a game in which it allowed 30 points. It allowed just seven first downs two games ago at Nebraska and last week held a potent Texas A&M offense to 230 yards of offense. The unit is playing at a very high level systematically, and is coming up with big plays, too, like Brian Jackson’s fumble return for a touchdown last week. Defense is not the Sooners’ problem.

Quote To Note:   “Offensively, hopefully we can just have some continuity of being able to keep some balance, rush the football, protect the quarterback and protect the football. Those are things that you need to do to play good football.”—Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops on his inconsistent offense.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

This Week  ‘S GAME: Oklahoma at Texas Tech, Nov. 21—Texas Tech coach Mike Leach was Bob Stoops’ original offensive coordinator at OU. Both teams are pretty much playing for pride and a better bowl game. Neither wants to lose five regular-season games.

Keys To The Game:   OU has had 10 turnovers in its last two losses, and just one last week against Texas A&M. It’s an even bigger issue against Texas Tech, an offense that thrives an opportunities. The Red Raiders can’t get fee ones. On defense, OU has defended Texas Tech better than any other program through the years. The Sooners simply seem to know how to do it.

Players To Watch:

WR Ryan Broyles—He is still the Sooners’ No. 1 playmaker, returning punts, catching the ball, running reverses. Broyles’ big plays can keep the Sooners in the game if OU’s offense struggles, as it often does, away from home.

DE Jeremy Beal—Texas Tech may not have settled on a single quarterback, but it’s still a Mike Leach offense, and that means lots of passes and getting the ball away fast. If Beal can disrupted that passing game with a quick rush from the end, it could pay great dividends for the Sooners.

Roster Report:

• OL Brian Simmons, out with a bum knee since the conference opener against Baylor, may be available Saturday. OU needs all the help it can get on the line. Simmons practiced in pads Monday.

• WR Brandon Caleb sprained an ankle in the Kansas State game, did not play against Nebraska and played very little, and did not catch a pass, against Texas A&M. He should play Saturday at nearly full speed.

i am watching the OU/TT game and wondering what kind of spin Bob Stoopid is going to put on his show this week (that is added to his enormous contract with house free/cars free/country club free/shoe contract/tv show). ha ha ha. it is currently 34-6 TT. ha ha ha. it is a good thing you boys are (barely) bowl eligible. if you had any dignity you would refuse the (toilet) bowl, but i know you will accept so you can work your field hands, for free, for another, in your case, three or four weeks. you better try to recruit in Harlem and South Central from here on out, because you will take a back seat to TT. i told you before the season began that we own you. now we have branded you.

ha ha, Phil from Texas (as in the University of Texas). ha ha ha.

I think OU has an average team. This is not an OU year of GOOd or GREATNESS, just average. I think Bob needs to start looking for another offenseve coach, OU's defense has not been the same since his brother went to Arizona. I like the hurry up offense, but when your inside the 20 yard line we don't need to wait and see what the next play call is coming in. If Bob wants to have another National Championship and or another dominant team he is going to have to make some changes. Bob is a great coach and he needs to get the fire back in his blood as well as those around him.

I heard that three 2010 four star commits have decommitted. A sad sign of things to come. Next season was suppose to be OU's down season. God you mean we will be worse next season? I saw this happen in the John Blake era. Losses equal lost recruites which equals more game losses. And the snow ball grows and grows and grows. Maybe Bob Stoops should jump ship before it crashes. If Kansas State can do it , why not OU! I say rehire Barry Switzer!!!!!!!! YEAH BABY !!!!!!!!

"proud to be a sooner", that is a national joke, right? Time to go Noodling morons. A&M will embarrass the Sooners and OK State will complete the kill. By the way losers, why could'nt you Morons get your own school fight song and not steal a song from a real school, Yale. Remember, everyone in this country considers oklahoma a sewer and Nebraska the toilet.

Very good points, John B. I guess I should have used the phrase "play the best" rather than "beat". The way I feel about this team is, they're playing 2 or 3 notches below where they should be. Not to sound like I'm putting the loss on him, but the only OU player that had a bad game against NU was Jones. He's a freshman, playing in a hostile environment (I've never seen Lincoln so wired). He caved. But the loss and this season isn't on him. Still, like the article says, if they win out they WILL go do a decent bowl, and if they can win that, with all that's happened they can still feel good about the season.

You guys just keep telling yourselves that it's because you played such a "tough" schedule and how to "be the best, you have to beat the best"...I think the operative word there dingus is "beat"...You're suppose to do the beating dude...the fact is...you just aren't that good and you guys just don't know how to handle it...so when was the last time you had played NINE games and still weren't bowl elgible? And we're not talking "BCS" Bowls are we...we're talking with four losses...the sun bowl or pizza hit bowl...The fact is...you like everyone else got some people hurt ...but you lack backups...and that's recruiting and that's coaching....

The most note-worthy piece in the article..."OU has the 10th toughest schedule in the nation, and the toughest in the Big 12". That says a lot about where the program is and what the administration and coaches thing are important. To BE the best you've got to play (and beat) the best. That hasn't worked out for them this season, but readint about the level of teams they're scheduling in the coming seasons, they're not backing down from that idea. Many other highly-ranked, powerhouse schools who shall remain nameless ("Chomp chomp" & "Hook 'em") have obviously taken a much softer, safer approach to scheduling opponents. I'm glad and proud that by far the majority of OU's games were worth watching, and that the final 4 games of the regular season won't be anti-climactic, like it will for some.

I an very proud to be a Sooner fan knowing that this team is still competing even though the injury bug bit them this year. My concern is with D. Murray. He needs to get on the freakin field or Wilson/Gundy needs to try Miller to give Brown a breather. I am very disappointed in Jefferies, Brandon, Evans, Kenney and Ratteree this year.

keep up the hard work OU and don't ever stop fighting
not bad for a team that is only 5pts. away from being 6-0
this will only make them better for next season
every team has it bad season and this is OU's season and they will be back next season
the one thing i think it is teaching them is to stick together no matter what the circumstances are
people are quick to blame the coaching staff when you are not winning but lets remember
it is as harder on the coaches as it is on the players, and the fans
those coaches do not like losing and do not have any control of the outcome of the football game
so guys lets continue to support these guys through the good and bad
lets get those jayhawks(KAWC) kick azz with class

I am proud of the Sooners and the way they have played. Each game they have lost has been really close. They have been depleted by injuries and hanging by a thread all year long. They have fought tough in all there games.

Every team has its down years. This was supposed to be an up year for us with all our returning starters from last year. As long as this is just a bad year I am fine with it. People quickly forget the 90s when things around Norman weren't good at all. However the fans that have been fans since they can remember these are still good times for OU football.

Keep up the good fight Sooners. You can still make a decent bowl game, and people for next year can emerge and play well

People on here just kill me. Everytime there is a story about the sooners the texas wierdos come out of the woodwork, whether the story has anything to do with them or not. I think we are going to have a pretty good game tomorrow and I am a diehard sooner. Unfortunately, as a realist, I am afraid that we will lose this game. As much as it pains me to say this, if, Texas wins, I will probably be rooting for them the rest of the year, in hopes that the big 12 will be represented well in post season play. The rivalry between these two schools is fun year in and year out, but for christ sake, cant people on both sides of the border show a little class? Do you realize what you people sound like with most of these ridiculous posts. Terrible spelling, terrible grammer, and ignorant posts, which is poor representation for both states.

It's easy to forget Oklahoma's 2 losses came without a Heisman Trophy winning and future top draft pick at quarterback. What would Texas' record be if McCoy got hurt? Probably worse than 2 losses by 2 points even though they are just playing against JV opponents.
