Notre Dame Team Report
INSIDE SLANT
Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis, as he stood at the podium after a 33-30 double-overtime loss to Connecticut, said he was only concerned about his seniors. “I’ll worry about me tomorrow,” he said.
And so he did.
Meeting with reporters Sunday in his usual day-after wrap-up, Weis said he won’t step down and hasn’t heard from athletic director Jack Swarbrick, who has said he will evaluate the program after the season and that money to buy out the final six years of Weis’ contract won’t be a consideration.
The Irish have lost three in a row to drop to 6-5, and Weis’ future—or the lack of it at Notre Dame—has basically become a foregone conclusion. By his own standards, he hasn’t been good enough, with a five-year mark of 35-26.
“You know something, if they decide to make a change, I’d have a tough time arguing with that,” Weis said. “Because 6 and 5 isn’t good enough.”
Weis noted that all five losses this season have come by a touchdown or less, which just adds to the frustration of what might have been. Notre Dame finishes the season at Stanford this weekend.
Talking about himself in the third person, Weis said, “I think that the most important thing for Coach Weis and the coaching staff is to make sure we do all we can to give our players the best plan to be in position to beat Stanford. And that might sound like coach-speak, but it’s also reality.”
There’s no getting around the reality of the season, which took a wrong turn with a home loss to Navy when the Irish were 6-2 and in contention for a BCS bowl game.
He says the responsibility for the record, for the season, falls directly on his shoulders.
That being the case, it’s hard to not see the axe falling.
NOTES, QUOTES
• Coach Charlie Weis was seen with tears in his eyes as the players surprised the coach before the game with the idea of locking arms as they entered the field on Senior Day. “It was a really good moment for me, a real emotional moment, because no one takes more heat in the whole entire country than Coach Weis,” senior C Eric Olsen was quoted as saying in the South Bend Tribune. “He’s the first person to stick his neck out for this team and put all the blame on himself, and I just thought that was real special. Everyone wanted to do that together as a group to show everyone that was watching that we’re behind our coach.”
• OT Sam Young made his 49th consecutive start in the game against UConn, setting a record for starts at Notre Dame. He had been tied with Maurice Crum and Tom Zbikowski.
• Notre Dame is 1-4 in overtime under coach Charlie Weis.
Game Ball Goes To: WR Golden Tate—The junior, who might have played his final home game before heading to the NFL, caught nine passes for 123 yards and a touchdown against UConn. The big-play receiver broke Notre Dame season records for receptions and receiving yards. He has 83 for 1,295 yards this season.
Keep An Eye On: Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly—The leader of a 10-0 Bearcats team is certainly one of the hottest commodities in coaching. Notre Dame is likely to kick the tires on elite coaches entrenched at other schools, but, failing any success in that area, Kelly sure seems as if he would be a good fit and a popular hire.
Quote To Note: “You can’t hang your heads. Obviously it’s really disappointing. But look at what Stanford’s done the last two weeks. If we go into that game hanging our heads they’re going to kick the crap out of us.”—Notre Dame senior C Eric Olson, in the South Bend Tribune, on finishing the season at Stanford this week.
STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
Looking Good: The Irish probably have the nation’s best 1-2 punch at wide receiver, and QB Jimmy Clausen has delivered almost all season. Golden Tate (nine catches for 123 yards) and Michael Floyd (eight catches, 104 yards) each went over 100 yards for the third consecutive game. Clausen was 30 of 45 for 329 yards, with two touchdowns and no interceptions, against UConn. He is seventh nationally in passing efficiency with a rating of 156.45.
Still Needs Work: The run defense is 80th in the country, allowing 160.27 yards per game, and UConn took advantage with 255 yards on the ground. The Huskies had two players—Jordan Todman (130 yards) and Andre Dixon (114) reach triple digits. None of that bodes well with Stanford’s Toby Gerhart up next.
Roster Report:
• PK David Ruffer was pressed into action for the second week because Nick Tausch was unable to go after pregame warm-ups. Ruffer came through with field goals of 20, 23 and 36 yards, the last coming in overtime. He is 4 of 4 on field goals this season.
• P Ben Turk regained the starting job after Eric Maust struggled a week earlier at Pitt. Turk averaged 47 yards on five punts.
• RG Trevor Robinson, who had to leave the game at Pitt on Nov. 14 because of an ankle injury, was back in the starting lineup against Connecticut.
• Backup QB Dayne Crist had surgery for a torn ACL on Nov. 6. His availability for spring practice wasn’t known.

Guess what? 6-5 just isnt good enough. Not for us and certainly not for your lard ass. Take a couple of years off, maybe try the stomach stapling again (hope it does kill you this time).

Pat Haden looked liked he was going to start bawling his eyes out. Never mind his insidious comment on how when he looked at the Notre Lame schedule in June he figured 1 loss, 2 at the most, a BCS bid and possibly playing for the national championship next season.
Soon the apologists will be out in full force reminding us of how ND beat USC 51-0 in 1966 and throwing out the old line "so how many national championships did your school win", all while the forget what a pathetic bowl record they have had over the past 15 years.

Geez, this post game show is sickening. You'd think that Weis had died. The whole thing is ridiculous. ND can no longer BUY it's way into recruiting and exclusive TV coverage any more. Too many choices for the fans and our remote will vote and really nobody cares. The "tradition" is over and the mystique long gone.
BUH-BYE Irish, its been nice knowing ya, but even nicer to put you 6 feet under where you below.
Grow a pair and get yourself into a conference already! Tired of the fact we have to have BCS exemptions for getting you into a big game. Does anyone realize that "independent" teams consist of the following: Notre Dame, Army, and Navy. That's it. Even Air Force is in a conference.
WTF IS UP WITH THAT?!?!?

The author, David Fox, explains that the composition of the Harris Poll (which is one of three equally weighted factors that determine the BCS rankings), is drawn from a pool of nominees distributed as follows: "Each of the FBS conferences nominated 30 potential voters, Notre Dame nominated nine, and Army and Navy combined to nominate three. Harris randomly selected 10 from each set of conference nominees, three from the Notre Dame pool and one from Army and Navy."
Assuming that each conference is made of ten teams, and, as the article reports, each conference gets 10 voters, the Harris poll basically allocates one vote per team for teams that are in conferences. Two of the three independent teams, Navy and Army, also get one vote per team. So this seems fair - one voter per team. That I can understand.
But hold the phones, Notre Dame gets not one vote but three. What is so special about Notre Dame that they get three voters when the rest of the football playing world only gets one voter per team? Is it because Notre Dame has won three times the number of national championships as any other team? Is it because Notre Dame has been playing football three time longer than any other team? Is it because Notre Dame has three times the number of Heisman winners? No, no, and no.
In all likelihood, Notre Dame gets three times the voters because Notre Dame is, well, Notre Dame. There's no reason, no justification, no fair and level playing field. Just Notre Dame insisting that it recieve special treatment and the BCS turning a blind eye to a clear inequity.
Now, I'm not a Notre Dame hater. In fact, I respect Notre Dame as an institution and Notre Dame football (less a couple of whiney-ass coaches) as a program. However, fair is fair. And this isn't. The fact is, whether your a Domer or a Domer-hater, ND gets preferential treatment whether it is deserved or not. And that does a long way to explaining why so many people don't respect ND football.
It seems to me, that if ND wants to earn respect, it should do so the same way the other 119 teams do - on a level playing field. Here's how - forego the special treatment. Don't insist on preferential anything. Join a conference. Get into a good hype-detox program. Then let your football team prove to all the doubters that you belong in the top 25 or belong in a BCS bowl. Do it on a level playing field and you'll earn the respect that many ND fans seem to think ND is entitled to. Then, and only then, when Notre Dame competes on an equal footing, will Notre Dame have the right to claim that victory and honor was won rather than bequethed by those that came before.

6-3 records. Both V.T. and N.D. got ambushed by Triple Option running teams. Both have plenty good players, and games to still play: anyone calling for Beamer's scalp? How about 6-3 Cal's coach Tedford? How high was V.T. and Cal ranked this season????
But no, only the calls for Weis to be fired. Geniuses these Wetzel's, Coyne's & Co. ain't.
The Fighting Irish are doing just fine. So, we had a disappointing loss to Navy, 7-3 Navy. Eight straight bowl games Navy. Guaranteed: beat Pitt this week, no one will remember these geniuses calling for Weis' head.
What's the best example of the AP "experts" rating abilities? They have 7-2 Central Michigan ranked at #33. And 6-3 Boston College ranked at #37. Boston College didn't play last week. The week before? They whipped #33 ranked Central Michigan 31-10. Yep, "makes sense to me."
The week before that? B.C. got beat by now # 39 ranked Notre Dame.
Notre Dame has two games left against teams ranked in the top 25. And one game (U Conn) against a team that laid 45 points on Brian Kelly's # 5 ranked Cincinnati team last Saturday. A 47-45 loss by a 4-5 U Conn team.
Meanwhile all the "experts" are calling for Kelly to replace Weis, because Charlie's defense is weak.....well, let's see how many points U Conn puts on The Irish D.....or doesn't.
1/4 of the season remains, and only the true fans have patience and faith we will win out. Will we? Don't know, but since every game, win or lose has been close, I know we CAN win.
We CAN beat Pitt. I'll reserve judgment on whether Weis can coach the team to "signature" victories until after the Pitt and Stanford games. Both ranked....and we CAN beat them.
Now all you nitwits bad mouthing the Irish, like the idiot yappin' about how we haven't been good "since the 80's" (when wasour last N.C., genius?): Don't you have a team? Doesn't seem like it, since all you jello-brains do is come here and display your blatant ignorance and low IQ's. Go root for/criticize your team, see ya!!
