Mississippi Team Report
INSIDE SLANT
It has been an up-and-down season for Ole Miss fans, many of whom thought their Rebels could be a national title contender if everything fell correctly.
Certainly, they thought, UM would challenge LSU and Alabama for the Western Division title in the Southeastern Conference and a first trip to the SEC Championship Game.
No, on both counts.
But as Ole Miss winds its way toward the end of a season that included some early losses that bumped the Rebels out of the polls, there is light at the end of this winding, curvy tunnel. The Clarion-Ledger of Jackson has reported that UM, especially if it wins out, could be a major player for a Capital One Bowl berth in Orlando on New Year’s Day.
Two straight New Year’s Day bowl berths for Ole Miss? Now there’s something.
Of course, neither win is guaranteed. LSU visits Oxford having lost two games this season—but those came against the top two teams in the nation, according to the BCS standings.
And then there’s Mississippi State, a 4-6 team that will welcome the Rebels to Starkville with a renewed emphasis on the rivalry under new coach Dan Mullen.
But if the Rebels can finish their season strong like they did last year, attaining a high-profile finish to the season could still be in the works.
NOTES, QUOTES
• Ole Miss and LSU will battle for the Magnolia Bowl trophy for the second time. That’s a new twist on an old rivalry that dates to 1894. Ole Miss won the game last year, the first year in which the trophy was awarded, snapping a six-game losing streak to the Tigers.
• The game is UM’s second straight appearance on the SEC’s national television package with CBS and its third of the season.
• The Rebels are receiving votes in this week’s major polls and would likely return to the Top 25 if they beat LSU to improve to 8-3.
• Ole Miss hasn’t beaten LSU in Oxford since it won 37-31 in overtime in 1998.
• Ole Miss is 27-26 against the Eastern Division since the Southeastern Conference split into divisions in 1992.
Series History: LSU leads Ole Miss, 55-38-4 (last meeting, 2008, Ole Miss 31-13)
Scouting The Offense: Does it go beyond senior Dexter McCluster? To illustrate the point of how this season has been a long and winding road for UM fans, they entered the season thinking QB Jevan Snead would be a dark horse Heisman candidate, but he has struggled under center. Meanwhile, in the past three Southeastern Conference games, McCluster is averaging an astounding 197 rushing yards and 262 all-purpose yards. Last time out, he set the school record for both marks.
Scouting The Defense: Ole Miss held Tennessee to 17 points last week and practically shut down the Vols in the second half, but coach Houston Nutt said there weren’t any adjustments aside from defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix calling for “a little more” zone, Nutt said. Nutt praised his team’s approach to stopping the run first, which will be key this week, even with Charles Scott out at tailback for LSU.
Quote To Note: “He knows all of them. He has extremely high football intelligence. … You only have to tell him how to adjust something one time. It is amazing. He knows tailback, fullback, H, Z and X receiver positions and Wild Rebel.”—Coach Houston Nutt, when asked how many positions Dexter McCluster knows how to play.
STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
This Week ‘S GAME: LSU at Ole Miss, Nov. 21—There’s plenty at stake for both teams in terms of bowl positioning, and the Rebels could overtake over LSU’s slot in pecking order with a win. More than that, though, it’s a home finale for an accomplished senior class and an opportunity to get a second straight win against a team that many Ole Miss fans consider to be their biggest rival.
Keys To The Game: LSU’s defense might pose a big threat to Dexter McCluster’s running ability Saturday, given the Tigers’ size and speed. But even if McCluster can get most of what he got Saturday at Tennessee, Ole Miss will be happy. The Rebels will be hard to beat if McCluster keeps up his late-season tear. Ole Miss will also need solid offensive line play against an accomplished LSU defensive front.
Players To Watch:
ATH Dexter McCluster—It’s hard to ask for back-to-back school record-setting games, but the Rebels will take it. As long as McCluster is productive, the Rebels’ offense is as dangerous as any in the SEC.
KR Jesse Grandy—A freshman, he has returned two kickoffs for touchdowns this year. That would be a great way to get fans into the game early and rattle LSU.
WR Pat Patterson—Coach Houston Nutt said Tuesday that Patterson, who has been up-and-down with production, “has been a mystery a little bit to us.” He has 11 catches for 163 yards.
Roster Report:
• WR Shay Hodge is averaging 105 receiving yards in the past five games.
• DE Greg Hardy is out for the season after undergoing wrist surgery on Nov. 12. He had 6.5 tackles for loss and a team-best five sacks.

Aside from the game predictions that were proven wrong :)... seriously you didn't know there was even a football stadium in Oxford? Please google Ole Miss Football and the Grove at Ole Miss. You will find that Ole Miss has one of the biggest/best football traditions in the nation! I really don't think that any other college's game day traditions could rival Ole Miss. If you haven't been... you should! Its something I can't exlain... you have to experience it for yourself! Ole Miss fans are devoted, passionate, and always up for a good time!

Old Miss Rebels are 6-3 and ranked 4th in SEC West and the VOL’s are 5-4 and are 4th In SEC East and has beaten #2 Georgia and #3 South Carolina and lost to the two 1 one teams in the nation by a total of 12 points, and lost their four games by a combined total of 20 points. If the VOL’s win this game and a Georgia and South Carolina lost the VOL’s could move to second place in the SEC East. If the VOL’s Win out they could go to the Outback or Cotton bowl we will have to see what the season brings.
Win/Lose: VOL’s lose in a close game earlier this week I would have picked the VOL’s but after the Thursday morning incident the VOL’s will be mentally unprepared to play this game. If the events of this week can be overcome the VOL’s can win, this unknown factor gives the Rebels the edge.
Reason: Old Miss Rebels has been up and down all year and need just like the VOL’s a win will make them bowl eligible. The VOL’s offence will move the ball and the defense will play well but the emotion of the arrest of three star freshmen will affect their play. The VOL coaches must try to keep the players motivated and focused which will be an almost imposable task.
Turnovers could determine the game; if Snead is pressured he is prone to throw interceptions. DE Hardy for Old Miss Rebels who was their best Defensive lineman is now out for the year this would have gave the VOL’s a big advantage if we hadn’t lose two Defensive backs on Thursday, so both Defensives are weakened for this game. Currently the Rebels are a 5 ½ favorite.
Old Miss Rebels was ranked 4th nationally earlier this year prior to SEC play, the reason even with 6 wins are not bowl eligible yet is only one sub division win counts toward bowl eligibility.
Things to watch: Vol's will run and pass equally at first and stick with what works, the VOL’s Offence has shown a completely balanced attack. Crompton now leads the SEC in touchdown passes and is forth in the nation after his 5 touchdown performance last week, there is no true number one receiver, and he has completed passes to 12 different receivers in the last two games and because of great offensive line protection has only been sacked 3 times in the last four games.
Hardesty, Brown and OKU all should have a big day rushing and receiving. The Offense line is improving and getting healthy and the receivers are catching and making big gains after the catch. Hardesty is now less than 100 yards away from the thousand yard mark and should make it this game.
The VOL's Defense has greatly improved each week and the VOL’s defense and has steadily moved up in the ranking, last week’s second half defense hurt the stats, but expect the team to be back in form for this game. The defense took some big blows on injury department and now the question and who will step up for the two players arrested on Thursday, the VOL’s are thin at Linebacker and now Defensive Backs and for the fifth game in a row the defensive will have to cover one of the top receivers in the nation, and without Jackson this will be a very big challenge.
The VOL's Special teams will have to improve and have the game of the year in this area Jackson was key on kickoff coverage and someone will really have to step up, Richardson will be missed returning punts and someone will have to fill his shoes.
For the VOL’s overcoming all the distractions and keeping focused in the game will be Very tough, if they can do this the VOL’s could win the game. On offensive and Defensive Stats there are less than 30 yards per game separating these two teams, with the VOL’s having the slight edge, so the determining factor came down to emotion and focus which now Old Miss Rebels has the advantage after Thursday.
The High School and Junior College season is winding down and recruiting starting to picking up, we received a commitment from one of the top Offensive tackles this week. Jawuan James the big four star Offensive Tackle (6-foot-6, 293 pounds) who enrolls in Jan which will aid with extra time working on school work and weight room.
A side note: the Old Miss Rebels prep song was banded this week by the Old Miss President because the student body was saying “the south will rise again” after the song. I would have thought there would be bigger things for the school president to worry about before a big game.
Let the new era continue
Just a prediction from Afghanistan

Also, I heard that the game will be played in Oxford. I didn't even know Ole Miss had a stadium on campus. Is this a new thing? If not, why haven't they hosted home games there before? I appreciate any feedback (without the infantile cursing, of course...).

P.S. Larry
I'll take Houston over Bobby any day. Any coach that quits on his team during the season does not deserve to be a head coach. Just think of what kind of messege that sends to people, when the going gets tough just quit that's what Bobby would do.

Are you seriously telling me that you would put money on Ole Miss against USC, Ohio St, Penn St, Oklahoma (even without Sam B), Georgia or even Va Tech or Florida St.?
Heck, everyone's nervous about this Thursday's game against South Carolina, who hasn't won a meaningful game in years. ("The Rebels, ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press poll, get their first big test of the season Thursday night when they face South Carolina")!
It's amazing what some pre-season hype for a QB will do!
