INSIDE SLANT

The Michigan State football team needs this bowl game, if for no other reason than to change the headlines. Most have been negative and most unrelated to football since the Spartans’ regular-season ending 42-14 loss to Penn State on Nov. 21.

That night, some football players got into a “small” altercation at a nightclub. And the next day, a group of them left the end-of-year awards banquet and went to a dormitory across the street, where a fight erupted with members of a fraternity who were apparently involved in the Saturday fracas.

The investigation is ongoing, but Mark Dantonio has taken action with 10 players who were identified. Running back Glenn Winston and safety Roderick Jenrette—both recipients of second chances from Dantonio for prior transgressions—are gone for good.

Eight others are suspended for the bowl game, including starters in cornerback Chris L. Rucker, wide receiver B.J. Cunningham and wide receiver Mark Dell. They were suspended for being there and then lying to Dantonio about it. Five other suspects have yet to be identified but will be suspended if they turn out to be football players, Dantonio said.

So yeah, it’s been a mess in East Lansing.

“As I said to our football team last week, it’s like a hurricane,” Dantonio said. “A hurricane blew in. At Thanksgiving there was a little bit of an eye of the storm. And I told them they’d better brace up, because the end of the storm’s pushing through this week. And that’s exactly where we’re at with this thing. And hopefully, the sun’s gonna come out soon and we’ll be able to resolve this and be able to move forward.”

The suspended players include reserve running back Ashton Leggett and reserve defensive tackle Ishmyl Johnson, both of whom might have seen action in the bowl game. But Dantonio said he never considered passing on the opportunity to play in it.

“No, absolutely not,” he said. “We have 95 players who did not do anything wrong. When I look at the guys who start for us, we have … 19 starters who are intact. So there’s never been any kind of doubt in that area.”

There’s no doubt that Dantonio’s program needs something good to happen and soon.

NOTES, QUOTES

Scouting The Offense:   The Spartans have been led by the Big Ten’s top passing offense, but key targets B.J. Cunningham and Mark Dell are suspended, so quarterback Kirk Cousins needs others to step up and assist top target Blair White. Sophomore Keshawn Martin is the team’s top open-field weapon, but he has struggled with drops. Look for Michigan State to use talented TEs Brian Linthicum, Charlie Gantt and Dion Sims more, and for speedy reserve Chris D. Rucker—no relation to suspended CB Chris L. Rucker—to get a chance to help.

Scouting The Defense:   After a midseason surge that culminated with a mostly terrific effort against Iowa, the Spartans allowed more than 1,500 yards to their last three Big Ten opponents—Minnesota, Purdue and Penn State. The lack of front-four pass rush is a major problem. The Spartans have stopped the run against most teams, but the pass-rush issue and a struggling secondary are problems. And Chris L. Rucker’s suspension takes away this team’s top cover corner. Coordinator Pat Narduzzi will have to come up with some magic tricks to avoid embarrassment in the bowl game.

Matchup To Watch:   MSU LB Greg Jones vs. Texas Tech QB Taylor Potts. Much of MSU’s defensive effort will be on Jones, as usual. He must be able to diagnose things quickly, and he’ll likely spend much of his time chasing Potts off the edge. Potts gets rid of the ball quickly in Texas Tech’s offense.

Quote To Note:   “We’re gonna gain our self respect back as a football team and as a program, on and off the field. And it is my goal and my intention to win that football game. And we will be extremely motivated to do that as a program, coaches and players alike.”—MSU coach Mark Dantonio

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Bowl Breakdown:   Michigan State vs. Texas Tech, Alamo Bowl, Jan. 2, San Antonio—It’ll be a virtual home game for the Red Raiders, who quietly had a strong eight-win season with blowout wins over Oklahoma and Nebraska. MSU has played in the Alamo Bowl once, a 2003 loss to Nebraska. Chances are good for a high-scoring affair.

Players To Watch:

QB Keith Nichol—Kirk Cousins remains the starter, but the extra bowl prep time might allow MSU’s coaches to add some elements to get Nichol involved. He is an explosive runner with a big arm who might be able to help in the red zone, particularly.

WR Keshawn Martin—Martin moves up to No. 2 receiver with the suspensions of B.J. Cunningham and Mark Dell. He was already heavily involved as a return man and a runner on reverses and wildcat plays. Now Martin must prove that his early-season case of the dropsies has been cured.

DT Jerel Worthy—The most talented defensive lineman on the team is a redshirt freshman, and this defense is much better when he dominates the interior. Worthy appeared to lose some steam late in the regular season and the Spartans need him in midseason form to have a chance.

CB Ross Weaver—The senior captain has been used mostly as a nickel back this season, but Chris L. Rucker’s suspension means he’ll start and play heavy snaps. Weaver has been an on-and-off starter since his freshman season, so the bright lights shouldn’t bother him.

Roster Report:

• The Spartans expected to get S Roderick Jenrette back from a broken foot for the bowl game, but now he’s off the team for good thanks to his involvement in an on-campus fight. MSU’s safeties have struggled all season, particularly sophomore Trenton Robinson.

• Junior LB Greg Jones was named an AFCA first-team All-American, shortly after Big Ten media voted him Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. Jones was joined on the All-Big Ten first team by K Brett Swenson and WR Blair White, with C Joel Nitchman earning second-team honors.

Also, White has been named a first team Academic All-American. Steve Wasylk in 1993 was the Spartans’ last first-team Academic All-American.

• The Spartans are mostly healthy entering the bowl game, and some time off has allowed key players such as DE Trevor Anderson (ankle), QB Kirk Cousins (ankle) and S Danny Fortener (concussion) to get closer to 100 percent.

When you recruit lowlife ghetto boys, you get lowlife ghetto boy behavior. No surprise there. And anyone who uses violence and brings shame on his university is a genuine lowlife.

It is good to see a coach stand up and say "To hell with this. We will go with better people."

Actually I have to disagree- Dantonio seems to have responded admirably, and didn't pull strings to get breaks for his stars. No amount of good coaching can keep a player from doing something stupid, the coach can only try to foster an atmosphere of responsibility and make the penalties for that kind of nonsense so severe that nobody else will do it.

Incidentally, there was a lot of flak given on campus because the coaching staff wouldn't comment until the police/prosecutors had determined who was involved and what charges were being filed. Come on, people, just because the players spend a lot of time with the coach doesn't make him the god of their life. A coach has to do his best with the players, but know when to let the authorities do their job.

Bottom line- the attitude that the coach is responsible, or the school is responsible, or that anyone except the people who did the crime are "ultimately responsible" is bunk. That's the kind of attitude that makes the players think they can run wild in the first place. They're all adults, it's up to them to act like it.

What a bowl game means is an extra month of practice, a chance for the freshmen to gain some more game experience. Teams that go to a bowl have an edge going into next season.

i love central fan jumpin into this post 2 months later, yes it was a big win but weve all moved on. keep playin lil sisters of the poor tech and eastern and basketweaving state on your way to being a noticed mid major. ill be honest that day your team was better, lefevour is nice as hell. id even dare to say a top 5 qb in the nation this year. and it sucks that cmu has won the last 3, definitely somethin to have pride in, but seriously 2 months later and youre STILL posting on our page? cmon, be serious. classless called, said it wants your c with the lines in it to be its official logo.

you will definitely go back to suckin ass when your qb leaves, like you always do when a good player goes unnoticed and ends up at your school, in football or basketball (hello dan majerle), when we play you guys again were gonna beat the crap out of you at your school, and youll cry about havin the score ran up. maybe you should schedule us in hoops too, maybe youll get another upset, lol i know were both aware that aint happenin.

have your fun, bring all your kids down to detroit for the mac title and back for the pizza bowl. itll prolly be a 12-1 team that might be ranked at the end of the year. possibly the best team central has ever had. dont ruin it by bein dirtballs, youll be lookin up at 3-4 teams in the mac sooner than you think. esp when butch jones gets outta that football nowhere otherwise known as mt. pleasant. only thing pleasant about that place is the name. enjoy chips.

Well said Dan, perfect spelling or sentence structure is the last argument of bitter fans of losing teams.
When you have nothing more of value to debate, bring up grammar. Vedder probably thinks that makes him sound smart. The Chips beat MSU this year and we have bragging rights until we play again.

    GO CHIPS!

You two want us to lock you both up for a cage fight???

    Let it go!!!

The CMU victory is history. For both teams.

    ... and "suck on it"?

    Nice commentary.

Degree in literature from CMU??? Let me guess... probably a BS?

    Move on.

My bad, they didn't start playing their series until 1991. The victory game ball was for '91 and '92.

Alright then vedder918792002 at least to say you did accept the loss that's all I wanted to hear. To let you know, CMU hasn't forgotten about their victory actually and probably never will. In their trophy case at the student activity center, they still have the game ball from their '90 and '91victories over MSU. Can't wait to see the '09 game ball next to it. They don't ever forget about their big victories (I do admit CMU football history isn't as solid as U of M or MSU but they're a small university and every small university football team have their rough times).
I get it though being that you are a typical MSU fan and can't talk trash, so you resort to critiquing a person's way of writing a sentence on a INTERNET MESSAGE BOARD. I'm sorry I didn't bring my English 201 skills for you and to take the time to type some perfect, articulate sentences for you. Then again, your not a professor and to come on here to tell me how everything on a internet message board is always written perfectly, you are as blind as a bat. Take look at just a few of these articles on here and the message boards and I'm sure you would have a field day correcting them. So don't tell me, how I do this wrong and wrote this sentence wrong where you have millions of people who do the same because again, its an internet message board. Who cares and for once get the stick out of your butt and actually come up with something creative.
Oh my profile information by the way, I created that about 10 years ago. I don't have the time to update or could care less about that. Didn't think people actually looked that up but then again a person like you who needed to come up with SOMETHING to talk back.

I just figured the use of :) and ;) would be lingo that you truly understood Dan... It seems you can barely put a sentence together to form an articulate thought otherwise. :) Hey I accepted CMU's victory a month ago. I congratulate them. But face it, I am a MSU fan. What do you want me to say?

Here's a little tip about trash talking. Rival teams do poke fun at opposing teams fans too. You wanted to trash talk, and I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings, Dan. CMU was the better team this year. No excuses. MSU had a meltdown... they are learning from their mistakes. If you are a CMU graduate, I apologize. In your profile it just said you were a 15 yr old and that you were an 'eastsida' from Detroit. Just poking fun at you and your profile. Once again.... NO OFFENSE. You don't have to take any of this seriously, or lash out so viciously :)

In fact good luck against your in-state rival this weekend.

    :)

P.S. Oh damn... I forgot about the rule against using smileys. My apology.

Nope actually vedder918792002, I'm going to stay on the internet chat boards because I've done my homework and graduated from college making really good money. What about you? Oh wait, all you do is nit pick and critique a person sentence because you have no life and can't seem to accept the loss against CMU. You are as bad as a fair weather Michigan fan and their loss to Appalachian State. All you do is avoid the subject and attack something else. What is up with these :) and ;)? Now calling me a 15 year old boy, so I take it as your a 12 year old school girl who uses those dumb symbols when texting. Grown men don't use :) when writing so before you tried to critique a man's writing why don't you stop using smiles and winks. You know those aren't in the English grammar? Don't tell me oh this is in present tense and this is in future tense when you are putting smiles and winks all over the place by combing the semi-colon and half of a parentheses together. You are absolutely full of crap. Here is a metaphor for you, can't chase a rainbow without a shotgun. Blind squirrel chasing a nut, thanks mother goose.

Listen junior (Dan), post 31 says Nichols and Cousins WILL be considered one of the best QB's in the Big Ten. Now for you, my CMU graduate friend, that is called "future tense". Now you seem to be complaining, and saying that they ARE the best now... why couldnt they stomp CMU... wah, wah, wah!... But you are speaking in PRESENT tense. :) You are no graduate my friend.

And if you want to talk smack about the CMU game... which mind you was 5 weeks ago (since most fans, neither MSU nor CMU give a damn about anymore), I guess the best comment to give for you is that even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in awhile, my friend. Focus on your Geometry homework... stay off of the internet chat boards, ok?

    ;)

Actually, vedder918792002 I think your full of it and you just choose to avoid reality with CMU beating MSU. You seemed to dance around it and choose to criticize a person's vocabulary and try to ignore it. Get over yourself and stop pretending you are smart person. Basically, your the one acting like a 15 year old.

Actually vedder918792002, Post #30 and #31 shimaun3 talks about how Cousins will be rated one of the best quarterbacks in the big ten. Yes, I was responding to the right forum as this answers your question. So my question for you is, have you learned how to read? And another question, are you going to be brat and not accept CMU beating MSU? I give you this you are very good nit picking at the demeanor of something where in the end you tried to avoid it all which is basically accepting the loss from CMU. So there is a difference between good trash talking and bad trash talking? Honestly trash talking is trash talking there is nothing good about it. Are you an English Professor of some sort? Cause if not, you have no reason to judge on what type of vocab doesn't come from this university even though I just told you I have heard worse from MSU (I noticed you avoided my question about that) or how this is a vocab of a 15 year old. Also, it doesn't matter how you win or lose based on a penalty or an interception. There is no moral victories in football.

MSU has improved since the beginning of the season, although they were pretty good. They lost to CMU because of an off sides penalty which gave CMU another chance to win the game. They lost to ND because of a pass interception as time was running out. The cold hard truth is U of M lost to State and now have lost two games in a row. Rather than running down MSU's football program why not spend your time trying to figure out why Michigan football seems to be spinning it's wheels. The fact is State went toe to toe with Michigan and beat them.

Dan. You can trash talk all you want...it's football. I appreciate trash talking. My problem is that you sound like an idiot when you do so. "Suck on it"? That's the best trash talking you can do? As I said before, I appreciate good trash talking, but what you consider trash talking is just idiotic... much like a 15 year old's. To be honest, I was commenting on your demeanour, not the trash talking. I was commenting on your claim of being a CMU graduate. I know a few CMU graduates, and they do not even speak like you. But water under the bridge.

So if Cousins or Nichols are considered one of the best in the Big Ten, then why didn't the lead MSU to victory? MSU should have dominated, right? Those two quarterbacks should have had a field day against CMU. Wait they didn't and they both failed against CMU. Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the Big Ten a BCS school and the MAC isn't. Of course, being a BCS school means they are the bigger schools going up against bigger competition and get an easier shot at the national championship compared to schools from the MAC. So again, tell me how is Cousins or Nichols the best in the big ten? You know CMU is from the MAC, right? Another thing for ya, let me know when either one of your quarterbacks get a good decent win especially in the Big Ten like beating OSU and then I would agree with you that both of MSU's quarterbacks are one of the best in the Big Ten. Beating U of M doesn't make you one of the best in the Big Ten. Get off your high horse, admit your loss to CMU, and make a BCS bowl game for once in your life.

To vedder918792002, I'm sorry I used foul language and I hurt your feelings and that you can't take a little bit of trash talking. I know you are probably feeling pretty down and can't say anything back to the school that beat you but to say no alumni use that vocab. Just curious ever been around MSU's alumni? I have and especially during the CMU game and trust me, they weren't kind words. To say I'm a 15 year-old then what should I call MSU's alumni? 5 year-olds? Brats who can't accept a loss to CMU. Let it be known, Central is your big brother this year.
