INSIDE SLANT

Apparently, when the University of Michigan announced its “All In For Michigan” promotional campaign in mid-August, not everyone signed on. As another disappointing football season came to a close, there were more signs that forces in and around the once-hallowed program are not only lacking the commitment to be considered “all in” but even tugging in the opposite direction.

In his postgame remarks following a 21-10 season-ending defeat by rival Ohio State, Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez addressed publicly for the first time what had been a very active topic behind the shroud—that people inside UM are hoping he fails.

Rodriguez is just 8-16 after two seasons, and went just 1-7 in the Big Ten this year. As he overhauls the program and converts Michigan to the dangerous spread offense he ran so well at West Virginia, inexperience, lack of depth, and not having the right players for the offense have hurt. What hurts more, Rodriguez said, is having to fight internal forces, as well as everything else.

“I just think there’s a faction creating a negative type of environment that wants to create drama and wants to see people pointing fingers,” Rodriguez said. “There’s nobody in that locker room that’s going to point any fingers. Everybody in that locker room is all in.”

Well-placed sources have said repeatedly that some in Michigan’s brie and burgundy crowd have never accepted the choice of Rodriguez to replace the popular and grandfatherly Lloyd Carr, saying Rodriguez was not “a Michigan man” and even sniping about his Appalachian accent.

Rodriguez, 5-7 this season, would not divulge specifics on the campaign of negativity, saying he gets “overtones” and messages from people about it. Senior punter and team captain Zoltan Mesko was not as diplomatic.

“There are people out there who don’t want us to succeed or the coaching staff to succeed,” Mesko said. “I could write a book about it. There are a lot of guys that don’t see what goes on inside the program of how much love there is for the players. It’s a shame they don’t see how close we are to being one of the best programs in the nation.”

Michigan moves on, into a recruiting season that will be vital to Rodriguez having success in his third season, and saving his job. But Wolverines fans are left to wonder if great recruiting and more hard work will be enough to overcome the powerful, nameless entities that are not “all in” and never will be.

NOTES, QUOTES

Game Of The Year:   Michigan 38, Notre Dame 34—With only 11 seconds left on the clock, the Wolverines saw freshman QB Tate Forcier, in just his second start of his career, hit senior WR Greg Mathews with a five-yard touchdown pass to give Michigan the win.

The Wolverines ran up 430 yards of offense and improved to 2-0 with the win over No. 18 ranked Notre Dame. Michigan displayed its power running game with 190 rushing yards, led by senior RB Brandon Minor who carried 16 times for 106 yards. Forcier gave Michigan fans plenty of reasons to hope for a huge turnaround in 2009 after the disastrous 3-9 campaign the previous season.

The athletic and gutty young quarterback went 23-of-33 passing for 240 yards and scored three touchdowns—two passing and one carrying the ball.

By beating a ranked team in dramatic, comeback fashion, the euphoria was back in Michigan football. The win over the Irish was part of a 4-0 start that had Ann Arbor awash in optimism.

Player Of The Year:   DE Brandon Graham—The senior from Detroit was a standout performer who was unfortunately somewhat disguised on a weak unit. Graham finished the season with 10 sacks, and ranks second all-time at Michigan in tackles for loss with 53. At times, he was virtually un-blockable, and while the defense struggled as a unit, Graham made all-Big Ten plays with regularity.

Fast Forward:   Michigan had 18 players make their final appearance in the maize and blue in the season-ending loss to rival Ohio State. Since they are all holdovers from the Lloyd Carr era, many of them do not fit the mold of the type of player needed for the style of play preferred by current UM head coach Rich Rodriguez, but several were major contributors this season.

Without question DE Brandon Graham and P Zoltan Mesko are headed for careers in the professional ranks and thus will leave big holes for Rodriguez to fill. Otherwise, the losses hit hardest along the offensive line, where David Moosman and Mark Ortmann depart.

With an NCAA investigation over alleged violations involving practice time still hanging over his head, Rodriguez pushes on, well aware that Year Three must be markedly different. He will need to improve the raw talent on hand, and recruit well to achieve a winning season and secure a bowl bid, which seem to be the minimum standards for hanging on to his job.

Recruiting Trail:   Michigan needs a lot, starting with more of the right parts for its spread offense, and a bunch of help on defense. The UM defense could not stop anyone this season, so the most-pressing need is there.

Rodriguez might have locked up defensive help in the best manner possible—by stealing premier Ohio kids, and thus keeping them away from rival Ohio State. LB Antonio Kinard (6-4, 200) from Youngstown is a speedy and explosive tackler, while DB Courtney Avery (5-11, 170) from Lexington has sprinter’s speed and solid coverage skills.

While Kinard and Avery are just two of the pieces needed to upgrade the UM defense, Michigan looks to diversify and strengthen its offense with homegrown QB Devin Gardner (6-4, 205), and a pair of fast receivers from Ohio—Jerald Robinson (6-2, 180) and D.J. Williamson.

Quote To Note:   “It’s a very, very competitive profession, but there’s nobody on our staff, and I don’t think there’s anybody at the university, that is daunted by the challenge.”—Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Players To Watch In 2010:

QB Tate Forcier—The freshman had a rough end to his baptismal season, throwing four interceptions against Ohio State, but he vowed to come back stronger and more prepared in 2010. Forcier started all 12 games for UM, passing for 2,050 yards and 13 touchdowns.

QB Denard Robinson—The speedy second option for Michigan proved to be a valuable weapon running from the shotgun. Robinson had 351 rushing yards in a limited role, averaging over five yards per carry and scoring five touchdowns.

RB Vincent Smith—Michigan has big plans for the Florida product, who was pressed into service in 2009 when injuries culled a couple of veterans from the lineup. Smith moves into the lead role at running back for 2010.

WR/KR Daryl Stonum—The sophomore was one of Michigan’s best field position weapons as he set the Michigan single-season records for kick returns (39) and kick-return yardage (1,001). Stonum takes on a bigger role in the passing game for 2010.

Pro Prospects:

•  P Zoltan Mesko is a semifinalist for the Ray Guy award for a second straight year after leading the Big Ten in punting and ranking sixth nationally with a 45-yard average. Mesko has the distance and hang-time to excel in the pro game. He had 15 punts over 50 yards, 15 for fair catches and 13 downed inside the opposition’s 20-yard line. He has punted 43 times for 1,934 yards, including a 66-yard season long punt against Western Michigan

•  DE Brandon Graham is projected to go in the first two rounds of the NFL draft, even though his future in the pro ranks might be as a rush linebacker instead of as a down lineman. Graham has the speed and quickness to be a major disruptive force and shed blockers. In his Michigan finale, he had four tackles for loss against Ohio State to end the year with a Big Ten best 25.

Roster Report:

•  OL David Molk missed most of the season due to injuries, with a knee injury doing the most damage. He is undergoing rehab and is expected to see limited contact in spring, but be ready at 100 percent for fall camp.

•  LB Jonas Mouton inherits the role as the leader of the UM defense, and his strong 11-tackle performance against Ohio State only enhances a solid resume.

•  QB Denard Robinson is surrounded by rumors that he might seek a transfer, since Robinson lost out to fellow freshman Tate Forcier in the duel for the starting job. Robinson might be the fastest player in college football, but his one-dimensional skills make it tough to find a regular role.

•  WR Roy Roundtree came on late in the season and posted two 100-yard receiving games, and will assume the role as Michigan’s go-to guy on the outside. As the spread offense gets more and more tuned in, Michigan will find creative ways to get the ball in the hands of its best athletes, like Roundtree.

ESPN stated that a writer has his pre 2010 rankings out and has UM at 24? I am a die hard fan as they come but how can you predetermine that. What sign of life has RRod shown to deserve that so far in a pre-season ranking? Why are the Detroit Cass tech kids leaving Michigan to go play in Oregon and other Pac-10 schools? Since when did Michiogan lose out on in state kids to Ohio State and Michigan State, and when did Michigan stop recruiting Texas kids? We were always the number one recruiter for Texas talent and the National Championship coach left MSU for LSU because he said MSU could never compete with Uof M in recruiting, so why are kids now choosing MSU over UM? Then we choose the CEO of Dominoes to be our AD? What pedigree does he have for sports and the past of Michigan sports (I am literally asking that question because he may be a good hire, I just don't know)? Then I look at the USC program who is going to start losing recruits from Caroll leaving and they have 5 star recruits that have Michigan on theri top list now and RRod hasn't even affoered them a scholarship (according to Rivals.com)?WTF. Since when did we become the gate keepers of 3 star recruits over 4 and 5 star kids? And schools like NC state and other are able to get 5 star commitments? I will root for UM til the day I die, but RRod betrter seriously do something next year with all of "HIS" kids/recruits now.

Chipswon, I sound like a bigot?? I understand this is not the correct forum to totaly explain myself so I'll keep it very short. Name one country that Islam's have moved into, that they didn't try to change that country's Gov't?? Name just one, you see my un-educated friend, once they have a strong vocal minority they well press for changes in our laws, it could be suni or sheia, doesn't matter, they well press to change them.. In some ways they already have, Muslim woman in Florida is requesting she be allowed to have her driver lic photo while wearing a burka, therefore only showing her eyes.. It starts very small, none is so blind as he the will not see..
On The U of M front, I fear we are headed down the wrong path, as evident by the 4 strong bowl wins involving Big Ten teams... The Big Ten runs the closest to a pro-set style O and D, than any other conference in the nation. My 2010 perdiction, 3-5 or 4-4 in-conference play, and RR is given more time.. And Dearborn get's a Muslim cleric as a counselmen, possibly a senator...
BTW, 2 S. Korean Auto Plants are now in the south park of the United States, they are putting hard working Americans to work.. With good pay and health care... And check it out, NO UNION'S... I guess only the American big three, can't afford to stay in country, ask your Union brothers why that is??? So please try not to lecture anyone about Capitalism, it's not your strong suite...

    To Darrell,

What has destroyed our economy is greedy business leaders, who care only about their yearly bonuses. Lets send our jobs to China, where we can pay them 13 cents an hour. In the short term the company profits increase and the bosses get their big bonuses. The long term negative is if Americans lose their jobs, they have no spending money, thus the economy fails. Put your anger in the right place.

The Dearborn comment makes you sound like a bigot!

Back on the story topic, RichRod needs to stop whining about who supports him and who does not. Do a better job coaching and recruiting and who supports you will not be a problem! Everyone will!

    STOP WHINING RICHROD, START WINNING!

Fitz, you and I have much more common ground, than I thought. However I beg to differ with the whole Carr knowing he left Michigan weak idea... Had Carr stayed, we would have played in bowl games these past two years, and the upcomming year with R. Mallott as a three year started, we would have had a good shot at the BCS Championship.. I really think that..
However since, RR's introduction into Michigan, his changing of traditions and his, "I could care less attitude", brought people like myself out on these bloggs. It has been RR's constant blaming of not having his players on the field, that has enrraged me.. I mean really, B. Minor wasn't a good enough RB to get him the ball more?? He, "RR" either doesn't or willnot adjust his teams O during halftime, why?? Is it he can't or simply doesn't know who too?? As you stated, every year is a new crop of players, If it takes 2-4 years for your team to adapt to the system, isn"t that telling you something is wrong??
4 Big Ten teams have proven that hard Big Ten, "Smashmouth football" wins bowl games.. The teams like NW and Min, that tried to play pass happy throw it all over the place lost, while the others won.. BTW great job Big Ten, very happy.. I live in the south now and I'm truely tired of hearing how great the SEC is...
I only want what every Big Ten, Michigan fan wants, our team to come on the field and compete, I almost have to throw up, when I see us go 3 n out and 3 n out time over and over again... I don't see it in RR, to form a Big Ten Champion, with his style of football, no matter who is on the team... Look his best WV team, would not have won the Big Ten Tittle...

Darell, tell us what you really feel, but on the same hand I do understand your emotions. But to stick with football for this post or I could write a book about our Country's decisions (quite simply I could do 2 things to turn our economy around and limit illegal immigrants, it bothers me that politicians can be so smart to be so stupid). Now, I have posted before, yes, we let a great coach go in Brian Kelly, but does RR deserve one more year, in all honesty I believe so. Do I think he is a "Michigan" coach, I do not believe he has proved it so far. As far as the dutch comments go, I agree with Darell, this year was no progress, we lost to Indiana in football, we lost to Illinois in football, not basketball. i do wonder however though, did Loyd Carr agree to leave because of the state he knew he was leaving Michigan in? Did he know he wasn't going to win too many games himself? The talent level and lack there of for UM has been dismal for Carr's last draft class, reminds me of Millens draft classes for the Lions. This next year is RRods proving ground for his whole career at Michigan period. I don't buy the whole he had young players that needed to learn his system, as stated before, you have a turn around every year in College football and need to re-teach your system every year, the only slack I will give him this year is that most of his recruits this last year did red shirt so they better come out blazin' next year. As so annimately stated, 2-8 and 1-7 will not cut it. What great football coach took 4 years to turn around a college football program, it took Kelly 2 years at Cinci with 0, 1, and 2 star recruits, it took 2 years for Saban at Alabama and now they are in the National Championship game. It took Harbaugh 1 year at Stanford with low level recruits, and you are saying to give RRod 4 years at "MICHIGAN with high level recruits because of a system? Isn't this the same man that pleaded to Mallett to stay because he could fit HIS system to any type of player, whether he was a mobile QB or a pocket passer, HE could fit HIS system to whatever types of players he had and make it work. A great leader is not measured by his friendliness but by his accomplishments.

Bitter, I'm bitter that unskilled labor, thousands of them with their lifetime retirement packages and over the top medical coverages have proven to be the downfall of the BIG THREE.. All the while the UAW says it's not us, it's the other guys, those greedy people trying to make a profit, "ie success".
Now at The U of M, we have decided that 1-7 and 2-6 in conference play is close enough, that's exceptable, just like the old fart on the line that no-longer pulls his own weight.. Can't fire him, he has a union rep backing him, so we need to hire another person, just to stay avg at best..
What has me bitter, is a country that settles for close enough, dumb's down our kids, and praises everyone just for playing the game... We are at war and yet, if you go to Dearborn Mi. it's like we decided to move them all over here. Prayers 5 times a day on loud speakers, you know if I wanted to hear that, I'd go back to Iraq..
Bitter, I'm not bitter, I'm angry, upset, disappointed and worried.. What type of country will we be turning over to our children?? Does anyone care?? Is anyone willing to work hard, show a backbone, stand tall and shout it out loud?? Or will we cower, and weep and ask what happened, where did our America go??
Folks the game of football is in away alot like life, hard work, determination and the will to strive forward is most often rewarded. We have chosen the easy path, we have set a new low standard at The U of M.. Coach Carr was canned because he couldn't seem to win the big important games, yes we stumbled, tripped and was often knocked down, but The U of M didn't stay down, we got onto our feet and destroyed the U of Fla, with it's great QB Teebow..
This head coach, RR may have a good heart, however he simply doesn't understand Michigan/Big Ten Football... Until he learns it or leaves, we are looking at 2-6 or 3-5 inconference records from now on.. If that's ok with you boosters, which it seems to be, than you've proven my point... A Union state, run by Union folks, gets a Union team.... I pray it ain't so,,, I appoligize for my ramblings, just had to let it flow..

I don't understand the UM system these days. Does anyone?

He's a failing coach obviously from the beginning, and he would repeat this season even you gave him 30 year tenure. The hiring committee is a failing committee to act nothing.

HEY RR, did you see what smashmouth football can do??? I give you the UMW vs UM game, it was a total WSC controlled game. Both sides of the ball, the O-Line was hugh against that small Miami D. This is the same problem you will have at The U of M, if you can't stop the run, you can't win against Big Ten Football teams.. None is so blind as he THAT WILL NOT SEE...
Wake up man, we lost what 3 or 4 games this year by more than 17pts?? That's not even competing, that's getting your a@@ handed to you. RR, if you don't recruit, those big strong in state kids, because it's not your brand of football, they'll just go to the other inconference teams and steamroll us, instead of playing for us.. You really don't get it due you??? 2-6 and 1-7 inconference play, next year early perdiction we go 3-5 in conference, if we're real lucky it's 4-4.. BTW Michigan, we lost out on another really tested, good football coach, he's now at ND..

No matter what, I feel sorry for all the players most of all. They end up getting stuck with RR !! They have no choice and say in the matter and that sucks. As long as RR is at Michigan, we will never be contenders.... NEVER !! He has no right to be a coach and has done nothing to deserve being a MICHIGAN coach. He is stuck on himself and wanting everyone to believe that his way is the only way to win, when in reality.... his way is the only way to lose !! Maybe we get one or two more wins next year, maybe... but we will still be on the bottom at the end of the year. He has recruited the wrong guys and has driven away too many committments. All our schools history and prestigue went down the toilet the day they hired RR. Just to add insult to injury, we are going to have the same poor excuse for offense and defensive coordinators as we had last year !!! I don't see any bowl games in the near future. I see more players leaving Michigan in order to play real college football and not RR 's idea of football. I still say that Denard Roobinson leaves the team and becomes a starting QB some where else, just like Mallott did. They are already talking about Mallett as next years Hiesman Winner !!!

Progress made, wait let me check, yep... We went from 2-6 in conference play to 1-7, now I see the progress.. Haha you think because we beat teams like Delaware St. that was progress, or because ND had a lead and choked it away that was progress..
Question what ever happened to that little white kid, RB you know the one who could due flips over people, remember we used him so much back in 08, he was a RR freshmen, ooops I forgot he left.. We played this little 185lb boy over B. Minor last year, then this year Minor got more touches and did better..
Everyone of you seem to be missing my point, RR is not, IS NOT a GOOD FOOTBALL COACH....
He fell into a great oppertunity at WV, our school fu@ked up with our hiring of a coach to replace Carr, and we had to find someone quickly and RR fell into the spotlight. Now we are watching other schools like ND hire real proven FOOTBALL Coaches, while we are going to stick with a guy that I wouldn't let coach my kids peewee league.
And once again, Why is he given so much room, where Carr was given none?? 2-6 and 1-7 inconference play, this is good enough to keep your job, only because it's a Union Town, in a Union State, backed by Union Boosters could 2-6 and 1-7 allow you to keep your job... Oh, yeah how's the UAW and the Big Three or I mean Big Two or is it Big One Auto companies doing these days? Yep, Unions they sure make the cream rise to the top, hahaha

Look, did you guys actually watch all of UofM's games the last two season's? There was progress made. We were competitive this year unlike last year. There were several games that Michigan could have/should have won -- - Iowa is a perfect example. Here is the reason they did not - - 84 of the 120 scholarship players were sophomores or younger. Combine a young team with a new system and you are going to go through some growing pains.

Being a lifelong UofM fan and previous member of the program, I'm not satisfied with would haves/should haves either. But I also strongly believed we needed new blood in the program that quite frankly became predictable and a perennial brides maid.

Let's support RR now and see where we are AFTER the 2011. I believe any coach deserves at least 4 years before you can truly gauge his performance - - - barring some major catostrophe - - - (insert Gary Moeller).

At least make sure the Team and the Coach gets the FULL support of program in order to be as successful as they can be.

Personally, I like RR and the direction the program is going. I agree 3 and 5 wins seasons dont cut it. But I believe the program made significant improvement on the field beyond just the two victories.

2010 will be a key year no question about it. Michigan needs to get to 8 or 9 wins, or more of you bandwagon jumpers will be trying to cut the program off at the knees.

Fitz, your point is dead on, these kids are here 3-5 years tops. So they all have to learn your system coach.. Yep everyone of them, we don't have a farm system like Major League Baseball. Who is supposed to teach them, why your are coach, with your staff...
Again I'm sorry I piss off so many of you, but this bum RR can't coach worth a rats a@@. WV was only good because of one or 2 players while he was the coach.. His system spread everyone to the 4 corners of the field, the ball was in the hands of a true RB not a real QB in White and he could run all over the place... Throw the ball only when the D really broke down or toss a deep ball every once and a while just to keep them guessing. However against Big 10 teams, they are going to smash the ball down your neck every play until you prove you can stop them. To do that you have to commite to stopping the run, now passing lanes open up.. The U of M has for years run Pro style sets, it shows, Harbough, Henning, Brady the list goes on, all where successful in the pro's and some beyond.
I ask everyone of you look at the old tapes of WV, because that's what the teams in the Big 10 are doing. They have seen exactly what I'm telling you right now. So how due you beat the WV spread O, it's real easy, you but a safety or a fast LB to shadow our QB. Everyone else plays straight heads up man to man or a zone.. Watch the tapes, don't believe me, just watch them.. Then and only then, well you understand why, I'm so pissed with this jacka@@ as the HEAD COACH at The U of M...
We where upset with not getting our first or second choice, so our AD Quickly picked anyone with a winning record, not truely looking into his system, or understanding of big 10 football... Again, we'll have no more then 3-conference wins with this Coach... Think I'm wrong, ok than you prove it...
I shall forever be a fan, a previous member and a defender of the faith for The U of M football program, today, tomorrow and forever...

Michigan Wolverine food for thought. I am not saying Rich Rod is not a good coach, and I am not saying his style cannot fit what Michigan needs to become, but I am questioning whether "HE" fits Michigan. does he understand what a Rivalry is? Does he understand being the coach of the winningest program in the country? In the past yu could argue that Michingan was a minor league for the NFL. UM tought players how to play fundamentally sound and make it in the NFL. About the only other program to duplicate that effort was the U of Miami in the past. With all the Heisman winning QB's from Florida and Florida State, and Miami, the QB's from MI succeeded, the LB's the DB's, about the only position that didn't make it in the BFL was running back for some reason. I am coming to the conclusion that rodriguez really does not understand Michingan football. I think we let one get away in Brian Kelly, I love him as a coach and teacher. i watched his teams at GVSU and what he did at a "Minor" college at Cinci is amazing, and he did that with no talent and switching schemes. I, being a UM fan and not even MSU, have never liked nor rooted for Notre Dame, but watch what he does. People are saying he won't get the prospects because of the tight guidelines at ND, ND still gets 3, 4 and one 5 star recruit. imagine what he will do with that talent compared to the 1,2,and 3 star recruits he was getting at Cinci, or the no star recruits he was getting at GVSU (While winning national Championships). ND fans, you got your man, and the Big Ten (11) better hope ND does not join. But Rich Rod better get a clue, this will now be his third year, and all of his recruits. You cannot use the excuse about learning a new system anymore, these are not pros where they play with you for 6 and 7 years, you only have a 4 year turn around at best so you are always re-teaching your sytem every year. get it Done!

    RE: Post 313 "Maizerage21"

    WOW!!!

    I mean WOW!!!

That was the most competent post I have ever read.

    Certainly the longest...

I have looked into the same issues and have drawn the same conclusions, but have not been able to put in the time to come up with a response as well thought out as yours.

    Keep up the great work.

Give RR one more year then go after Bill stewart, WVU's current head coach. He was 9-4 last year and will probably be 10-4 this year. It'll take a couple of years before he can install his system with his players then WVU will be really good. The former coach didn't leave much. Only got 2 and 3 star players. So please consider Stu. so we can replace him the way we replaced Beilein with Huggins.

Ok now that I have had time to cool down after this season I came see the boys played their hearts out but the RR I trying figure out why he acted like such a Brat along side when a play did not go as he planed it . I believe most agree is hard to come into a new place and teach your kind of Football but I as everyone else can see RR type of Football is not played in College ball because you cannot win with it
