INSIDE SLANT

Despite last week’s victory over Syracuse, the big story in Louisville again centered on coach Steve Kragthorpe’s job status. There’s a lot of speculation that a third disappointing year in a row will be enough to force athletic director Tom Jurich to get rid of a coach he genuinely seems to believe in but who hasn’t met expectations on the field and hasn’t gotten much love from the fan base.

Kragthorpe has strongly indicated that he expects to return next year, but the votes of confidence have gotten more tepid as the season has gone on. Still, there’s still something he and his players can do to improve his position—win this week.

Beat a struggling South Florida team on the road, and the Cards will be 5-6 and one win away from being bowl-eligible. A .500 record wouldn’t guarantee anything, but the Big East could make some calls and try and find them a home somewhere, as the ACC did a year ago for North Carolina State.

That won’t be easy. Louisville ranks 108th out of the 120 Division I teams in scoring at 18 points per game and are 93rd in total offense. With musical quarterbacks due to injuries and a banged-up Victor Anderson in the backfield, the team hasn’t created enough opportunities or done much with the ones they’ve had.

South Florida is tough at home, and the Cardinals have never won there. But for the focus to be on something other than job security this week, that’s what Louisville has to do.

NOTES, QUOTES

—Chris Campa was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Week for his effort against Syracuse. He led the team with a career-high 15 tackles, which included two sacks and a forced fumble.

—Louisville announced a crowd of 33,223 for the Syracuse game. That’s an improvement over the 21,497 who attended the previous home game against Arkansas State, which was the lowest in the history of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium.

SERIES HISTORY: Tied 3-3 (last meeting, 2008, 24-20 Louisville).

SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: This is going to be a challenging game for an offense that has struggled to score even against weak defenses. South Florida allows fewer than 20 points a game and less than four yards a carry, all while punishing passing mistakes with its 11 interceptions.  Adam Froman is going to have to make smart decisions with the football, but he’ll have help from WR Scott Long, who torched the Bulls for 134 yards when the teams met a year ago.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: B.J. Daniels is no Matt Grothe, but though he began the season as a backup, he’s done a solid job as the USF quarterback. He’s dangerous both running and throwing the football, which puts a lot of pressure on the linebackers and secondary to guess right on their initial reads. The coaching staff will be studying the film from the last South Florida game, a 31-0 loss to Rutgers last Thursday, to see if they can capitalize on some of what worked for the Scarlet Knights. A good sign for the Cardinals is that Chris Campa is playing the best football of his college career and earned Big East Defensive Player of the Week honors for his effort against Syracuse.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “I have no idea what my future holds, I have no idea what tomorrow holds. I’m planning on being here. I’m not going any place voluntarily, so if it’s involuntarily—I can’t answer that question.”—Coach Steve Kragthorpe in the Louisville Courier-Journal, addressing his job status in his weekly news conference.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

THIS WEEK’S GAME: Louisville at South Florida, Nov. 21—The programs have met six times prior to this weekend’s matchup, with each team winning three. The trend line favors South Florida, since the home team has won every game in the series thus far.

KEYS TO THE GAME: Defensively, making B.J. Daniels uncomfortable can slow down the Bulls’ attack. But the real key to the game is for the offense to get to the red zone more often and take full advantage when it does.

   PLAYERS TO WATCH:

WR Scott Long—When these teams met last year, Long had five catches for 134 yards. He leads the team in both receptions and yards this season, and looks to be as big a factor this time around.

QB Adam Froman—Froman returned against Syracuse but didn’t look sharp against the Orange. The better he looks this weekend, the better the chance the Cardinals have at the upset.

MLB Jon Dempsey—Chris Campa may have been the one named Player of the Week for his defensive effort a week ago, but Dempsey has been the rock in the middle of the linebacking corps. The senior would love to go out with a bowl game and will need to be at his best against B.J. Daniels and the South Florida offense to make that happen.

   ROSTER REPORT:

—OL Joe Evinger has missed the past two games with a high-ankle sprain. It’s unclear whether he’ll be ready to play this weekend.

—CB Andrew Robinson missed three games with a groin injury and was limited against Syracuse, but he came through in the final minute with the game-saving interception. He should be in line to get more work this week.

—RB Victor Anderson has been limited this season by a series of injuries, most recently a shoulder. He should play this week, but Darius Ashley and Bilal Powell will also see time.

I think putting Jeremy Wright in the game would give you the winning season that you so
desperately need. Give him the chance. It will change your entire season.

We are in deep do do! Arkansas State will be our last chance to win a football game this season. Our players our either too small or too slow to compete with most of the other major college teams. We need a new coach, and we need one now. My pick would be Coach Sherman Lewis. Sherman Lewis is from Louisville, Kentucky and has 4 Super Bowl Rings when he was an Offensive Coordinator for the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers. He was a runner-up for the Heismann Trophy to Roger Staubach when he played for Michigan State. I don't know if he would even consider coaching The University Of Louisville but one thing is for certain ... he is retired and isn't doing anything right now ... and neither is the University Of Louisville football team!

The one guy that said give him 5 or 6 years must not be on the same reality that most of us are on. 3 years is usually and indication of what direction we are going in. That amount of time allows the players that he recruited to become upper class men. We don't have to win 10 games 6 would have been going in the right direction and that is not going to happen. We don't even look competitive against these teams after the first quarter. To many mistakes and penalties which is a disipline problem. Any coach that wants to be the players buddy usually don't get the results they should. Remember these players are very young men still needing direction. Now for the next coach most want high profile and I agree. If you go after a good mid level guy such as Bosie States coach or Utahs coach all we will be is a stepping stone to some big school. It is useless to go after a big conference coach suggested 3 Big Twelve coachs. Why would they leave that conference for us. Instead a big conference coach with something to prove such as Tommy Tuberville would be the best answer. Great success recruiting connections in the south and if he wins here he will stay the course because of his age. You get him and in 10 years you will be naming the field after him.

He never should of been hired in the FIRST place...It was a rush job because Petrino bolted & the high-profile potential recruits were coming in that weekend! Tom Jurich is the one to blame for this fiasco!!!

Man this talk of Kragthorpe finally being put out makes me want to scream in relief, I`m sure most of the players for the CARDS will do the same, I dont see the intensity from the players, I really think they just want to hide, because they know people are laughing at us, We go from a top ranked team, to a joke, Kragthorpe walked into the head coaching job of a great team and he blew it, this oh give the guy a break he cut half the team because of discipline issues, Petrino wasnt having that kind of issues, From what I`ve heard Steve is a good guy, they dont need a buddy coach, they need discipline, I dont see that with this team, and I believe we do have some great players, and cant help but feel sorry for them, fact is our coach sucks. So lets clean the plate and get a proven coach in here and start kicking some ass again. NO MORE B.S

As far as playing Tennesee, we've done that. The Big schools don't like playing us because we're not a traditional power. The games are either a blowout for the other team, or they almost lose. Just ask Ohio State.

I'm from Louisville and grew up on 3rd and Central (across the street from the stadium) and watched Louisville religiously my whole life. Im Army and stationed in Ft hood, TX so I know what you mean by the longhorn fans; I've stomached them talking trash about Louisville frequently and TX is huge on their college teams. Tom Jurich had been a genious at recruiting winning coaches and I place all my faith in that guys decision and hope that he'll make some moves to revive the football team and fast. I haven't got to watch too much cardinal football this year cause Im in Iraq but I did stay up late and watch the Pitt game. Louisville is a poor team and I disregard my last statement about staying loyal to Kragthorpe because Louisville plays like a poorly coached team. The players are not fired up and now we are easy win for most top programs that we used to cream badly.

Tony you made a lot of sense when you said that he had a championship caliber team and failed. I do agree but I also remember alot of Patrino's recruits were kicked off because of countless discipline issues that needed adressed. He still had top caliber that year and failed to utilize it. I also agree that we need a replacement coach with roots from the south because between the southern players and the local players the cardinals had were the most sucessful. I'm not very optimistic about the rest of the season and back to beign the Louisville fan that looks mostly toward basketball (Pitino messing that up right now). I will never give up my faith and support for the cardinals football but we need some serious revival to happen!

JOKER PHILLIPS IS TAKEN OVER KY
    WHERE WILL HE GO

he likes the south, and the only team that he would consider is memphis,
by the way is most likely to join the big east in 2013 watch out,
the big east commissioner is getting paid 5000 dollars a month just to get them ready for the big 6
memphis is about to fire there coach too,
    im just saying

kragethorpe doesnt need more time hell he had a championship caliber team his first year there, he didnt really have to coach them, even larry coker took miami to a national championship twice his first two years and bombed the rest of his career there

the past 10 years Louisville has recruited in the south anyway

What is up with yall? We don't need a new coach you just need to give this one time. So you must like having the high profile guy come in and give us winning seasons and then leave in the middle of the night for the Falcons. Maybe the guy who goes to the bigger school in a bigger conference such as John L. Smith. I hate seing louisville as a stepping stone program and sad to see how big headed the fans get after one decade of success. 5 or 6 years if Kragthorpe hasn't acomplished anything maybe then we go shopping but intill then have a little faith and back of the dude's nuts. You cannot build a legacy properly over night and untill you suit-up and play, shut-up and watch with patience.

Its going to be a tough year for Cardinal fans......the rest of the Big East is glad the Cards are so low. The school has a big time BB program so they need a big time football coach and program as well. I dont even live in Louisville and can see that. The AD needs to find a BIG NAME...they have the money or Pitino would not be there for such a long period of time. I would like the BIG L and other Big East team beat up on the likes of OSU as an example. That would be good sports on TV.

Yes its time for a new coach and not some mid level coach, We have went from a top 5 team to playing Indiana State, Man what a joke,The sports guys on E.S.P.N were having trouble not laughing as they talked about the match up. And I will not even watch the game this weekend, against UK and that really kills me, Whats wrong with us thinking Steve is going to turn it around, @#$% its another Ron Cooper story. 3 years as our head coach, he was 13-20 and Louisville held the top spot for turnovers in 1995, I say off with his head, lol just kidding, but lets get our @#$% together and get rid of Steve

I would love to see Coach Kragthorpe turn this train wreck around, however that is unlikely. If Louisville wants to get back into the national picture, we need a higher profile coach with a better resume than above average at Tulsa. Lousivlle is known for offensive firepower. While defenses may help win championships, I personally enjoy seeing my team put up 50+ points. My thoughts on replacement coaches:
    -Chris Peterson, Boise St.
    -Mike Leach, Texas Tech
    -Mike Gundy, Ok St.

These are all good offensive coaches. Hire a good defenseive coordinator and let him do his job. You can win a lot of games and even conference championships (BCS bid) with a top 5 offense and top 25 defense.

    Thoughts?

Well, if we can ever get over this hump of wondering if we can ever beat Kentucky then maybe we can set our sights on a tougher SEC matchup that would be a descent rival in the making and that is Tennessee. It is just a thought. I know that right now, we are not ready for that type of competion, or are we? Time will tell...
