INSIDE SLANT

Kansas could be parting ways with coach Mark Mangino.

An internal review has been initiated by the KU athletic department to investigate a personnel matter involving the eighth-year coach. Athletic director Lew Perkins confirmed the review was taking place hours before Mangino conducted his regular weekly press conference in advance of a game at Texas this Saturday.

Published reports indicate senior linebacker Arist Wright came forward and provided an account of an incident with Mangino. Details of that incident were not immediately known, though Perkins called a meeting with the team on Nov. 16. Mangino was not present at the meeting.

The matter comes on the heels of a five-game losing streak, which leaves Kansas 5-5 overall and 1-5 in the Big 12, where it sits last in the North Division. The Jayhawks were expected to contend for the division title and climbed as high as 16th in the polls following a 5-0 start, which included their lone league win against Iowa State.

When Mangino was pressed on whether he had lost control of his team, he became defiant.

“I have not lost the team, not one bit,” Mangino said. “I may have lost some people around here, but it’s not players.”

Asked to identify the people he referenced, in what could have been an insinuation at Perkins, Mangino said, “Take it for what it’s worth. You decipher it and see.”

Senior quarterback Todd Reesing, a co-captain, was one of five players who addressed the media during the gathering.

“It’s a little surprising it happened like it did,” Reesing said. “I didn’t realize things were being said, or feelings that people had. … They’re going to try to bring it to a quick resolve so we can get our focus and everyone else’s focus on this game (against Texas).”

Mangino has won 50 games at Kansas, leaving him two short of the school’s winningest coach, A.R. Kennedy, who served from 1904-10. Against Big 12 teams, Mangino stands 23-39 with just one winning season, 2007, when the Jayhawks claimed the Orange Bowl to cap a 12-1 finish.

NOTES, QUOTES

• Although Kansas awarded coach Mark Mangino an extension following the Orange Bowl run in 2007, bumping his salary $800,000 to $2.3 million per year, it was structured with an inexpensive buyout. If Mangino is terminated at the end of this season, he will be owed slightly less than $600,000.

• One potential cause for any termination proceedings involving coach Mark Mangino is the new Gridiron Club, a posh structure to be constructed atop the east side of Memorial Stadium. Seats in that new section are expensive, and sales reportedly are not moving well with Kansas mired in a five-game losing streak. A splashy hire of a new coach could spur sales.

Series History:   Texas leads Kansas 7-2 (last meeting, 2008, 35-7 UT).

Scouting The Offense:   Throughout the five-game losing streak, the Jayhawks have seemed to struggle in one certain phase. QB Todd Reesing had 10 turnovers in the first four games of the skid, but came back with a solid performance against Nebraska last week. But the run game was virtually non-existent, in part because Kansas got away from using RB Toben Opurum, a freshman power back who provided an initial spark. Play along the offensive line was good, especially with the Jayhawks matched against the Huskers’ strong interior front.

Scouting The Defense:   The unit provided a winning effort until late in last week’s game when DB Justin Thornton, who mostly plays as a nickel back, drew a 15-yard penalty for grabbing a facemask following a key stop on third-and-long. The infraction allowed Nebraska to continue its go-ahead drive in the fourth quarter. Costly mistakes like those are something the Jayhawks can ill afford, particularly from a senior, given the inconsistent play among all the position groups on defense.

Quote To Note:   “You lose a few games in a row and these types of (negative) things surface. It’s not uncommon. I don’t take it lightly, but I’m focused on Texas and I’m very comfortable the way we manage and run the football program.”—Kansas coach Mark Mangino.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

This Week  ‘S GAME: Kansas at Texas, Nov. 21— As if this matchup against the undefeated Longhorns wasn’t enough of a challenge, controversy swirls around the future of Kansas coach Mark Mangino, stemming from an internal review of his conduct. The situation is particularly hard on QB Todd Reesing. The senior was looking forward to this matchup earlier in the season as a potential showdown of division leaders pitting the third-year starter against his hometown school. Reesing starred in high school for nearby Lake Travis, but has struggled down the stretch.

Keys To The Game:   The Jayhawks will have to be robots to block out the distractions created by the uncertainty of Mark Mangino’s future. Even without that, competing against mighty Texas is daunting. The Longhorns possess the best defense in the country in terms of yards allowed, with playmakers in every position group. In addition, QB Colt McCoy will attempt to set the major-college record for wins by a starting quarterback as he goes his 43rd.

Players To Watch:

WR Dezmon Briscoe—The junior ranks first on the Kansas career list for receiving yardage with 2,897. WR Kerry Meier, a senior with 2,209 career yards, needs 58 receiving yards to move into second.

LB Huldon Tharp—The true freshman has started six straight games and is coming off a career-best 13 tackles against Nebraska. He has averaged 8.8 stops in the last four games.

DE Max Onyegbule—He has scored both of the Jayhawks’ defensive touchdowns—a 48-yard interception return against Duke and a 3-yard fumble return against Texas Tech.

Roster Report:

• OL Jeff Spikes is listed as the starter at left guard, which he moved to last week against Nebraska to give Kansas a veteran blocker to go up against Huskers standout Ndamukong Suh.

• WR Bradley McDougald continues to play as an extra defensive back and also has been used as a punt returner. McDougald was recruited by many teams as a defender, but chose Kansas because he could play receiver. McDougald is among four true freshmen and 11 freshmen overall to play this season.

VERY POOR DEFENSE and a good offense.

The D Line is simply too small, too slow, and too weak. This is coming from a KU Fan.

Two more wins - KSU and MU
They need to somehow win at least one of the other ones, if not they should turn down any bowl offers as they to not deserve to go.

The Texas Tech game may end up as TT - 81 and KU -30 (and that is if KU plays their best D game of the year).

VERY, VERY POOR DEFENSE . . . .and you wonder why the O' players leave early if they have an option.

Still better than the 80's but not by much.

    Nicely put "Jayhawk Fan".

KU barely beat ISU, who barely lost to K-State, who got murdered by T-Tech, who barely lost to Houston, who got killed by UTEP, who lost to KU, who was in "Foot Loose" with Kevin Bacon.

Actually, KU throttled Duke, and Virginia Tech only beat Duke by 8 points. Regardless, I think KU will be fine. They are guaranteed a victory against those losers from Missouri. They choked big time against the Cornshuckers who choked against Virginia Tech. Oklahoma need to block somebody before they go shooting off their mouths. Rock, Chalk!!!!

After the last two games, this schedule looks brutal. If KU's defense keeps playing like they do, the Texas Tech game will be an all out track meet. Colorado might even make a good offensive showing now that they've benched the little Hawkins.

I'm a KU fan, but after Colorado it will be hard to watch. Sure there is time to make improvements on the defensive end, but not enough time before facing some of the best teams in the country. No one can argue the quality of passing offense Mangino has this year. However, we will unfortunately be witnesses to a season much like last year, where the top of the South put us in our place. Mangino built this team around the defense almost a decade ago, and we saw the jayhawks hang with the best. These shootouts will get us by iowa state and colorado, but the pressure will be too much to handle in the weeks to come. I have also failed to note the lack of a running game, which will put even greater stress on our offense as the season progresses. Our best year was 2 years ago with a top of the nation defense and an offense to get it done. We had the orange bowl to show for it. It's been a real pleasure to watch Reesing and Meier work together!

KU fans need to stop talking trash until they have actually played someone. You people need to realize that the thoughest team you have played so far is Iowa State, the 3rd worst team in the Big 12...and you almost lost. You will probably win against Colorado also...the 2nd worst team in the Big 12.

Your defense is one of the worst in the conference, and when you face Oklahoma you will be completely embarrased when Sam Bradford puts up 60+ points.

And for those of you talking down about Nebraska, did you notice that as soon as the downpour let up against Missouri, Lee threw 3 touchdown passes in 3 minutes? Not to mention the star running back Helu was sick with the flu. I'd like to see how good Reesing plays in a monsoon. When Kansas faces Nebraska later in the season, they will be playing one of the best defenses in the nation, and I'm excited to see how many points Nebraska's offense will put up on you when you allow Iowa State to score 36.

Kansas will not win the north, they will be 3rd having lost to Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, and Missouri.

Nebraska will win the north, they will be favored to win all but one of their remaining games to Oklahoma. Missouri will be second with their losses coming from Nebraska, OK State, and Texas.

Sorry Jayhawks, you may start the season 6-0, but you will be in for a rude awakening when you start playing opponents that aren't laughable.

    Mike,

How can you say that Mizzou is overrated? There not even ranked. And no one expected them to go 4-0 in the non-conf. games. And yes they lost alot of players, and probably won't be as good this year as they were the last 2 years. But 9 wins is not out of the question at all. And I guarantee no one thought that would have been possible going into the season.

Yes, My bad. I should have looked at that closer (in hopes that KU would actually play a quality non-conference team.)

28 points....? Maybe 7? This to a team that barely beat Virginia (if you don't remember, Virginia lost to William & Mary). Congratulations though.

Keep celebrating wins against solid teams like Duke, So. Miss, and NO Colorado. Eventually KU will run into OU and get 60+ points put up on them.

Mike; just to correct you to make sure you don't make all KU fans look like idiots. Nebraska went 9-4 last season (remember? 2 back to back sub .500 years -- not sure where you get your info?) and KU was a lucky interception away from going 6-6 in the regular season entering a bowl game. Mizzou hasn't shown that they're out of anything either, they do have a lot of new players and coaches; but it is a long season and they still have talent. Don't make any bold predictions yet -- they could be a way different team at the end of the season (especially in a heated rivalry game). Everyone knows rankings are BS at this time of the year -- maybe stop the spouting off until KU actually is in a game against a worthy foe (Ole Miss?)...

Prediction: KU 4 losses (possibly 5) to Ole Miss, OU, Texas, Nebraska, and possiby Mizzou

Really now, let's get real. Mizzou is not as good as people think. Illinois has been a Big 10 doormat for more than two decades, and will continue to be so. Beating a big conference cupcake is no different than beeting a small conference cupcake. Mizzou lost a lot of talent to the NFL, without which they are way overrated. As I said in an earlier post, the rankings have little to do with reality, Nebraska is proof of this. No 22 after back to back sub 500 seasons? Why? Their new coach is from the SEC, that's why. See what I mean about the SEC bias in the polls? Kansas is my team and always will be, but I will admit they need some more improvement. The performances by the defense in the first two games is encouraging, but we will se what happens when they get into the conference schedule. If that defense holds up, I can see KU upsetting Oklahoma and beating the stuffing out of Texas Tech. As for Mizzou, without your big playmakers from the last two seasons you have no chance against a seasoned and very hungry Kansas team in KC.

    Hey EdB,
You beat your across the river rival. Congrats on what will be your only big win against what is obviously a down year for the Big Ten. We will beat you as usual and NU. Trust me when I say that we won't be benching anyone when we come to KC to smack you punks around. Reesing will toss 400 and Sharp will rush 110 with two scores. I see you boys with 5 losses this year so no chance on you winning any North title.
