INSIDE SLANT

Kirk Ferentz has made it clear he has little experience defending a triple-option rushing attack. He has about a month to get Iowa up to speed on defending the tricky scheme.

Luckily for Ferentz, he has a few guys on defense with the speed and ability to build his game plan around. Linebacker Pat Angerer was named a first-team All-American, one of only two Big Ten players to appear on the list (Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones).

Angerer and defensive end Adrian Clayborn are two big reasons why Ferentz has to like his chances of slowing Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 5. Angerer leads the team with 135 tackles, while Clayborn has a team-high 18 tackles for loss.

The Hawkeyes enjoy running the ball as much as any team in the country, but the speed and blocking schemes of the triple option make it much more difficult to defend. Iowa can reference Ohio State’s season opener against Navy this year for proof.

The Buckeyes rank fifth in the country in run defense, but Navy—Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson’s former team—gashed Ohio State for 27 points and 186 rushing yards in nearly pulling the upset.

Iowa is fifth in the Big Ten at stopping the run, allowing 3.5 yards per carry.

NOTES, QUOTES

• Kirk Ferentz always believed the Hawkeyes deserved a BCS game, despite losing two of their last three games.

Now that they got their wish, the Hawkeyes must contend with an unfamiliar opponent running an unconventional offense in the Orange Bowl.

Iowa will face Georgia Tech’s powerful option attack, an offense Ferentz admits he has little experience defending.

“I’m sure we have played somebody that runs the option, but certainly not to this extent and not with this proficiency,” Ferentz said. “The good news is I guess we’ve got some time to try to get ready for it. The bad news is I’m not quite sure how you even come close to simulating that in practice. I don’t really have any idea how we’re going to do that.”

The Hawkeyes have a month to get everyone healthy and the defense geared to stop the option. After starting the season 9-0, Iowa dropped two of its last three after quarterback Ricky Stanzi and running back Adam Robinson went down with high ankle sprains.

Both are expected back for the bowl game. It’s particularly important for Iowa to get back Stanzi, who has looked disastrous at times this year, but has shown the heart and leadership needed to fuel tremendous late-game rallies.

Seemingly every bowl season, Ferentz must fend off more rumors of his departure from Iowa City. Typically those rumors center around NFL head coaching gigs, although lately the focus is Notre Dame. Until the Irish fill the vacancy created by the firing of Charlie Weis, Ferentz will continue answering questions about South Bend.

The most important part, at least for Ferentz, is that his players remain unaffected.

“I think our players are completely comfortable and I don’t think they’re distracted at all,” Ferentz said. “It probably comes up more in recruiting.”

Ferentz has been affiliated with Iowa for 20 years.

“We’re just extremely happy to be here, not only professionally, but personally,” Ferentz said. “It’s been a tremendous place to raise our family.”

Scouting The Offense:   QB Ricky Stanzi has shown he can be awful and brilliant—all in the same afternoon. He’ll get the chance to do it again in the Orange Bowl. Stanzi is expected to be fully recovered from the high ankle sprain that kept him out of the final 3 1/2 games of the regular season. His return will provide a big lift to an offense that has struggled at times scoring. Stanzi’s top target is WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, although 6-foot-7 Marvin McNutt, a converted receiver, and TE Tony Moeaki are both lethal in the red zone. Freshmen RBs Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher did an admirable job running the ball in place of the injured Jewel Hampton this year, combining for 1,469 yards and 12 TDs.

Scouting The Defense:   Iowa leads the Big Ten in pass defense and ranks third in points allowed, although that pass defense won’t do much good against Georgia Tech’s option. Iowa’s rush defense, which ranks fifth in the league and has been gashed at times, is much more telling. LB Pat Angerer’s 135 tackles rank in the top five nationally, while DE Adrian Clayborn has 9 1/2 sacks and at times this season has looked unblockable.

Matchups To Watch:

Georgia Tech QB Josh Nesbitt vs. Iowa DE Adrian Clayborn.

Clayborn has done a tremendous job of getting into the backfield this year, but he hasn’t seen a QB as shifty as Nesbitt, who combined with tailback Jonathan Dwyer to rush for more than 2,300 yards and a staggering 32 rushing touchdowns. The key is getting to Nesbitt and forcing him to decide early whether to keep the ball or pitch. Clayborn has been brilliant at turning up the heat on quarterbacks this year.

Georgia Tech WR Demaryius Thomas vs. Iowa CB Amari Spievey.

The Jackets throw the ball more than most triple option teams, and Thomas is the top target. He has 46 catches for 1,154 yards and eight scores. No one else has more than eight catches. Stack the line of scrimmage to stop the option and Nesbitt isn’t afraid to throw over the coverage to Thomas. That means a busy day for Spievy, Iowa’s best cover corner.

Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi vs. Georgia Tech secondary.

Iowa was unbeaten when Stanzi went down with a high ankle sprain late in the season. The Orange Bowl will be his first game back. His final numbers (56 percent completion percentage, 15 TDs, 14 INTs) don’t demonstrate Stanzi’s importance to the Hawkeyes. His ability to rally from big deficits is a big reason why he was voted the team’s MVP on offense. He will face a Georgia Tech secondary led by safety Morgan Burnett, who has four of the Jackets’ 11 interceptions.

Quote To Note:   “They are very, very unique, they are very well coached, and it’s going to present a heck of a challenge. At least we’re thankful that we have a little extra time. I can’t imagine trying to get ready for them in a normal game week.”—coach Kirk Ferentz

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Bowl Breakdown:

Orange Bowl, Iowa vs. Georgia Tech, Jan. 5, Miami, Fla.—This is Iowa’s first trip to the Orange Bowl in seven years and its second in the 76-year history of the bowl. It is Georgia Tech’s first trip back to Miami since losing to Miami in mid-September. It is the last time the Yellow Jackets dropped a conference game.

Players To Watch:

• QB Ricky Stanzi—Teammates will welcome him back despite his not-so-spectacular TD/INT ratio of 15/14. Still, he’s the heart and soul of the offense.

• TE Tony Moeaki—Seemed to disappear from the offense at times, but could be a great weapon against a defense unfamiliar with his size and speed. Moeaki has great hands and can be a great weapon over the middle or in the red zone when matched against a linebacker.

• DE Adrian Clayborn—One of the most underrated pass rushers in the country. Clayborn (9.5 sacks) can make life miserable on opposing quarterbacks.

• S Tyler Sash—The playmaker of the secondary. Sash’s six interceptions lead the league and rank in the top 10 in the nation. He has returned one for a touchdown.

Roster Report:

• QB Ricky Stanzi and RB Adam Robinson are both recovering from ankle injuries and both are expected to be ready. Coach Kirk Ferentz thought Stanzi was ready to play in early December, so the extra month off will only help.

• Ferentz said he believes it is in all college players’ best interest to stay all four years. Nonetheless, he knows OL Bryan Bulaga, DE Adrian Clayborn and DB Amari Spievey are all candidates to leave early for the NFL. “It’s a personal decision,” Ferentz said. “My job is to make sure we get accurate information in front of them. … Then it’s entirely up to them.”

• Freshmen DL Tyler Harrell and OL Matt Murphy will transfer at the end of the semester, Ferentz said.

• RB Jewel Hampton tore his ACL during the preseason and will miss the bowl game.

• OL Dace Richardson’s broken ankle has healed to the point Ferentz is confident he’ll be available for the bowl game.

• RB Brandon Wegher played through a painful injury to his intercostal muscles, which surround the lungs and aid in breathing. He is expected to be healthy for the bowl game.

A couple of things I thought Vandenberg and the Hawkeyes played their best game against Ohio State so Stanzi in the game would not have changed the outcome of that game, NW probably. I agree the Hawkeyes should be one of the favorites next year depending on any Jr.'s going too NFL. But Stanzi being a favorite for the Heisman could I get some of that stuff your smoking, I'm not sure he will even be the starting QB for the Hawkeyes. GT and Iowa should be a great game and a tough challenge for Iowa defense.

ThomASS, Why are you bringing up the 1982 Rose Bowl and Gordy? Also, why are the Hawkeyes so lucky? I don't get it.

I remember the Rose Bowl I attended about 30 years ago. A "well rested" Godry Bohannan looked like he'd gained 12 pounds -- because he had.

Still waiting for Iowa to score...

As Lou Gehrig would say, the Iowa Hawkeyes are (ECHO) the ... luckiest ... team ... in ... the ... whole ... world ...

Pay attention Hawkeye Fans. There should be plenty of time for Ricky Stanzi to heal up and lead the Hawkeyes to a victory in the Fiesta Bowl. Then he leads next years team to BIG 10 Conference Title and a shot at the National Title. Next year we should not see so many close games and Stanzi will be one of the favorites for the Heisman. I suspect Stanzi wants to show the folks in Ohio that they picked the wrong guy (Pryor). Big leads early in the games will give The "Keokuk Kid", little Jimmy Vandenberg lots of experience, which will prepare him for the job in 2011. 2010 looks like a great season for Iowa Football. 20011 and 2012 look great too!

I'm excited about the bowl game but I'm more excited to think about next year. This team is going to be stacked! Losing only 2 starters on defense and I think 4 on offense! If they win this year's bowl game they should start next year ranked in the top ten. Could be a title year next year! Go Hawks!

oh....and momentum is building. They just stole a 4 star tight end from Illinois.

Nate C, you are a self-absorbed chucklehead (translation: probably a buckeye fan)

First of all, if Ohio State, or Florida, or Texas had won their first nine games in the same manner, nobody would be using the word "lucky". You sound like a guy who is secretly jealous that his friend is dating a hot girl who he thinks should be with him instead, childish and petulant.

There is too much good coaching in Division I football these days for any team to get to 9-0 (or 10-2) by being "lucky". Interceptions? They're a result of a combination of factors, the two biggest of which are 1) good defensive line play that hurries the QB or flushes him out of the pocket, and 2) Defensive backs, safties, and linebackers being *where they are COACHED to be* on the field.

As to the question of whether IOWA or OSU is a better team, or would be more likely to beat a particular opponent in a bowl game? Iowa played a much tougher schedule all year long. The teams they faced had a higher winning percentage than those faced by the buckeyes at the time. Went on the road to beat conference rivals Penn State (ranked 5th in the nation at game time), Wisconsin, and Michigan State. The buckeyes LOST their only game against a top five opponent this year (USC). More telling though, is the fact that IOWA OUTPLAYED the buckeyes in Columbus. The Hawks offensive line dominated, and our team defense, especially in the secondary, shut down the buckeyes passing game.

I won't comment on officiating or whether that favored one team more than others, because that's a losers argument. I'll leave that to you...

First this team has more heart then I have seen from any team this year.... I hope they can draw TCU or Boise State....... With a few good weeks of solid rest, this team is going to come out looking to do a little shake and bake! And how about the 7 first team big team honors...

Great season hawks, finish strong and shut some mouths,....I hate to say this but I can not wait to see what next years team brings, they should be out $%^&ing standing!!

Things look great in Iowa City. Stanzi is on the mend and may very well be ready for the Bowl game. If not then a talented and quickly improving QB named Vandenberg is showing us a promise of a great career at Iowa. Last Saturday he did the smart thing and played well enough to win and did not press beyond his present ability, and did not lose the game. The Defense stepped up and we got a win. The Hawkeyes are still a young team with most coming back next year. Last year 12 points kept the Hawkeyes from going 12-0. This year 10 points was the difference in the 2 losses. Next year looks very, very promising. Stanzi is not ready for a shot at the Pro's and has unfinished business in the BIG 10. He will be better then ever. Next year I expect he will get an early lead in games and give Vandenberg lots of 2nd half playing time............... Niceeeeeeeeeeeee! Iowa football should be a top performing team for several years. If you are a HS recruit interested in playing for a winner chose IOWA balck & gold. Roses would have smelled lovely but Oranges taste sweet too. ; o )))))))

And by the way, Vandenberg and the rest of the offense looked like @#$% against Minnesota! Where was Moeaki? Where was McNutt? But what the hell, a win is a win. Even though i was extremely embarrassed by the offensive play against a horrible Minnesota team.

In the home-stretch and it is IOWA 9-2 playing at home against a struggling Minneota team who has to still be smarting from a tough loss to the Hawkeyes last year in the old Metrodome. Just the thing to fire a team up and try to finish on a positive note. However I doubt Coach Ferentz and the Hawkeyes will get caught napping. Yes the Hawks are a much different team without QB Stanzi in uniform but the young QB Vandenberg showed poise and confidence in last weeks game, delivering more then most of us expected but what we had hoped for. His preformance last week gives us a glimpse at a bright future for the Iowa Hawkeyes. This week if the Iowa defense stands up and does what it has done most of the season and Vandenberg remains steady and patient we should get the "W". 10-2 or 9-3 either way is a fine season for any D1 team. Injuries happen and they do hurt but still a great season and the promise of a trip to Florida in January. How many BIG 10 teams will get Bowl invites? 5 for sure, 6 if Michigan State beats PSU at home and Minnesota at 6-6 might get a nod. Send the Gpophers some where just so those guys can get some warm sun in January. GOPHER FANS, YOU HAVE TO STAND UP AND BUY THOSE TICKETS OR YOU WILL NOT GET AN INVITE. THINK SUNSHINE, WARM WHITE SANDY BEACHES, EMERALD GREEN WATERS AND A COLD MARGAHRITA.

Nate C, you are not a college football fan... you are someone who jumps on and off band wagons. Saying that iowa would get destroyed in the pac ten, just makes no sense... we beat arizona, who is still in the running for the pac ten title. Also we should have beat ohio state, so does that mean ohio state is going to get destroyed as well????? Also does a mediocre team lead d 1 in interceptions???? o those are probably all luck to... what team do you like..... o wait i bet its florida, or maybe alabama... get off boards where you dont belong....

    To the haters:

How is a QB that rallies from behind to win games worthless? You must not understand the fundamental goal of playing an opposing team. However, if it's not obvious enough, I'll gladly tell you -- the object is to win, even if you've played badly. Those are in fact, the most satisfying wins -- teamwork in SPITE of adversity.

So we wish you the best with your interception wagers and all the other irrelevant criteria that have nothing to do with the games or the teams. Especially when you consider how much better all the other teams' skill players are (your opinions, with which I agree), IA's lack of depth at skill positions (we're not Illinois or Mich St or whoever), you should come to the conclusion that this team of overachievers, with good fortune and favorable rolls, etc., is an exceptional TEAM.

Stanzi might not have a gun or exhibit the best judgment, but his poise is unparalleled. It doesn't matter if you've got wheels like Michael Vick or a gun like Dan Marino, if you can't keep your composure. That's Stanzi's true talent. If you like the objectivity to see that, who really cares what your opinion is? It's just emotional tribal identification.

Please Nate C......get over yourself. Iowa was the beneficiary of a few calls this year.....like any team. They also got shafted on a few calls that should have gone their way. In the end it all evens out. Sorry, but mediocre teams don't win nine games and as far as luck goes, you make your own luck. Good teams make plays to win games and that was what they did in their close wins. No shame in that. If it's embarrassing for the Big 10 what "would" happen to Iowa in the Rose Bowl, what do you call what happened to OSU in two of the last three national title games? Sorry, but your opinion of what "might" happen is meaningless.

Finally this mediocre team is shown for what it really is, a mediocre team that had extraordinary luck, mixed with a LOT of calls that went their way. Face it Iowa, for the good of the Big Ten it’s important that you’re not allowed to go to the Rose Bowl. The beating would be extremely embarrassing not only for you but the entire Big Ten. Better to send a team that can keep up like Ohio State then send a team that should have (and would have had it not been for some very suspect calls) lost half the games they played this season.

Congrats to both teams. College football is often a game full of mistakes. So what. Both teams played well. Everyone was glued to their tv until the last minute. I think it was one of if not the most exciting game on Saturday. Lots of drama, lots of big plays, some suprizes and as they said on ABC's Widw world of Sports: "The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat". Hey, Iowa stepped up their game and never quit. OSU did not "SMOKE the Hawks" like some predicted. Iowa did everything but win and OSU managed to survive a scare. IOWA vs OSU...........it beats watching the Pro's on Sunday. Go HAWKS! Go BIG 10!!!

Actually, Vandenberg looked decent for being thrown to the lions like that. You can really only hang the 2 picks on him because that OT hail mary was going to be picked anyway. Heckuva better QB than Stanzi..he should wax Minnesota next week, so 10-2 is doable, providing Iowa's receivers hold on to the ball.

And Tex, you might want to look at Iowa's history with QB's under Ferentz. It hasn't been pretty...mediocrity most of the way. And while you can have a top 5 running game and defense, a mediocre QB isn't going to get you to the promised land. Vandenburg is and always has been the better QB this year. If you think your 15-interception scrub should be the starter, then you're not playing with a full deck. Oh wait, he's not!

Go Vandenberg! 5 TD's against the GoHomes next week and ol' Ricky Bobby can ride the pine when Iowa goes bowling.
