Houston Team Report
INSIDE SLANT
How quickly fortunes can turn.
A week ago, Houston was lamenting its inconsistent effort in a loss to UCF, a setback that may have possibly cost the Cougars a shot at the West Division title in Conference USA and a berth in the league’s championship game.
But one week later, Houston earned an easy 55-14 win over Memphis. Coupled with SMU’s loss to Marshall, now the Cougars are in the driver’s seat for the West title.
A victory in the regular-season finale over two-win Rice will give Houston the West Division title and a berth in the championship game no matter what SMU does; the Cougars own the tiebreaker based on their victory over the Mustangs earlier this season.
Quarterback Case Keenum passed for 405 yards and five touchdowns in just more than two quarters of work. Keenum set the school record for career touchdown passes with 94, surpassing David Klingler’s old record of 91.
“It’s definitely an honor with the quarterbacks that have played here,” Keenum said. “We’re definitely not finished yet. Anytime I get mentioned with those guys from the past that have blazed the trail ahead of us, it’s pretty cool.”
The Cougars’ offense was roaring from the start, putting up 21 points in both the first and second quarters. Following his fifth touchdown pass of the game, to L.J. Castile just four minutes into the third quarter, Keenum took a seat on the bench for good.
The defense was good again, holding Memphis to just a pair of first-half touchdowns and keeping the Tigers’ running game at bay, with 243 yards on 45 carries despite Memphis’ emphasis on keeping it on the ground.
“We felt that we haven’t played our best football game yet and honestly I’d say that we’re still striving for that,” Keenum said.
Maybe not their best, but it could be good enough to give Houston the West Division title and a shot at a conference crown.
NOTES, QUOTES
• Houston’s 42 first-half points against Memphis marked the highest scoring first half for the Cougars this season. The previous high was 41 against Northwestern State in September.
• The victory over Memphis gave Houston a Conference USA-record 14 consecutive home wins, dating back to Oct. 13, 2007.
• QB Cotton Turner got into the game in the second half against Memphis and set a number of career highs, including passing yards (173), pass attempts (16) and completions (13), as well as recording his career-long completion of 47 yards.
• QB Case Keenum moved into second place in Conference USA history in touchdowns responsible for with 113 after his five-touchdown game against Memphis. Keenum trails only Rice’s Chase Clement, who accounted for 125 touchdowns from 2005 to 2007.
Game Ball Goes To: QB Ryan Mallett—The junior continues to make his case for Heisman consideration with 405 yards and five touchdowns in the win. Mallett could have had even bigger numbers if he didn’t get sat down early in the third quarter with the game well in hand.
Keep An Eye On: WR Tim Monroe—The senior hasn’t had a lot of opportunities this year, but he got his first career start against Memphis and took advantage. his 92 receiving yards were a career high and he had a team-high seven receptions in the game along with a touchdown.
Quote To Note: “It gave us a lot of confidence. It showed us that if we play hard for all four quarters, we can stop them, and we can only give 14 points in a game. It gave us a big confidence boost.”—LB Marcus McGraw on the 55-14 win over Memphis.
STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
Looking Good: Once again, the offense was running on all cylinders, especially the passing game, which tore apart the Memphis defense in the first half. The Cougars didn’t commit a single turnover and finished with 689 yards of total offense, moving the ball well even when QB Case Keenum went to the bench to rest with a 35-point lead. The defense was also solid, holding Memphis to just 14 points.
Still Needs Work: The depth of the running game wasn’t there, with Bryce Beall out, with Charles Sims getting the bulk of the work and production with a team-high 15 carries and 90 yards. The rest of the running game was nine carries for 21 yards. Though the Cougars kept Memphis out of the end zone, they did give up 243 yards on the ground, an average of 5.4 yards per rush.
Roster Report:
• WR James Cleveland missed the Memphis game with an undisclosed injury, but the team was able to make up for his absence with the solid play of senior Tim Monroe, who made his first career start against the Tigers.
• Also sitting out against Memphis was Bryce Beall, also with an undisclosed injury. Beall practiced all week and there was no indication going into the game that he wouldn’t play.
• CB Carson Blackmon has been impressive lately, leading the team in tackles against Memphis with nine, including a tackle for a loss.

Btw, It is Texas law that any student that places in the top 10% of their class is automatically admitted to any publicly funded university in Texas. As far as Cowpoke U's poilicy of needing to be in the top 10% of the class, if it is the policy it is not impressive. Valedictorians in the Houston area don't get into Rice sometimes, I know that from personal experience. UT can not change policy to the top 8% unless state law is changing. You aren't even in the same league as Rice much less Cornell or Columbia.
The top 10% rule was instated by the Texas legislature after Hoppwood vs. Texas outlawed racial quotas in college admission. The point was to make UT and other public schools admit minorities from small poor schools by making it law that if you are in the top 10% you must be admitted. It isn't if you are in the 10% of a TX school you can be admitted it is you must be admitted. This targets small predominately minority schools in TX and has guaranteed a certain number of minorities admitted to Texas schools. It was just a quota without calling it a quota. This law applies to Tech, UH, A&M, UTEP, and all other Texas state funded schools. UT Austin got the attention because it was where Hoppwood vs. Texas orginated and the media rightfully pointed out it discriminates against kids in good school districts with higher GPAs who are bumped because of kids in bad school districts with low GPAs getting admitted under the ruling. Unless the legislature is changing it to top 8% rule, UT can not change the policy.

also just cause we know things about and are proud of our various institutions does not make any of us "nerds" (your words). heck, i was on my way to playing college football untill i got a severe hamstring/tendon injury during track season (yes track, it's a long story).
just because people choose to use their intelligence does not make them "nerds", that kind of thinking is so juvenile!! no one here is claiming to be the "smartest" (heck you wouldn't know you weren't involved in this conversation). all we were saying is that a school does not have to be "popular", nor considered a "big name school" to be worth something!!
next time "KNOW what's cookin' before you go in the kitchen"
...mind your business, stop the hating (everyone has the need to try and diss someone), and root for your own team!!!

one example of your b.s you talk - if UH's law school isn't that "good" then why do they have several awards placing them as a top 3 finalist in a national "competition" (so to speak)?? surely the other schools that are SO much better wouldn't allow UH to continuously show them up...the list goes on and on ...UH is a good school and you need to get off the sack!!!
p.s. while you're on this post hating, UH and the rest of the world is going on, you have nothing to prove, cheer for your team and GET A LIFE!!!!!

Love you guys--keep up the good work! I am only having fun--don't be so serious. However--you do need to do more research.
Side note-- on the top 10 percent deal. You can't even get into UT if you didn't graduate in the top 10 percent of your class. (freshmen) That is a little different that what cheese guy stated. They are talking about lowering it to 8 percent.

That is why all Cougars seriously need to get to the polls and vote for prop 4 that would expand Tier I funding. We are closing the gap with the 3 tier one public schools, UH should have similar funding. It can't happen with the amendment to the state constitution.
Now more on topic. I am looking forward to Saturday. I think it could be a shootout but I am glad the backups for the injured got some experience against Tulane. The TEs even got some good playing time. It looks like Hunter may be back. Last year was a close one but that was in Dallas and even with the injuries I think the coaches and players have adapted to the 4-3 now. Last year still had some 3-4 type players on the roster. I think it is 45-35 UH. The reason is like UTEP, SMU will believe they win this one because of the close game last year. They will bring everything they have.
Looking at the UTEP Tulsa game tonight, I think UTEP is a lot better than anyone thought, at least they are at home. We need some help from other C-USA teams since they have the tie breaker on us. If they win all the rest of their conference games, not impossible, then they win the West regardless of what UH does. I am not sure if the UTEP game was such a fluke or if these guys are much better than people believe. I believe a big part of their early problems was that UTEP didn't believe they could beat the big guys and lost before the game began. They believed they had a shot at UH because of last year. This could get interesting in C-USA and the West may not be decided until late in the season.

the things i said of ut scared to play UH is a FACT i know because i was in school there when it happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!! soon as briles came and changed the program around they REFUSED to play us!!
the years they built up those 16 wins against us were during the time when uh (like many others of the old southwest conf.) were on probation for blue chipping; heck arkansas just got off probation not too long ago!!
why are you ignoring the facts!!!! oklahoma state doesn't even have an upper hand against UH we have beaten them 2 out of the last 3 or 4 times we've played!!!!!! - FACT
UH is a good university
- #12 national rank in undergraduate architecture (#1 in texas) - FACT
i know i am at one of the nations top 5 graduate schools for architecture/urban design. ut, a&m, texas tech, and even rice do not offer the fully accredited professional architecture degree like UH. this means you can't do sh*t in the architecture world until you have an accredited degree. this explains why if you go the UH's college of architecture you will see many a&m, texas tech, rice and ut students there trying to get an accredited degree throught the graduate program!!!
-the law program is a top 10 national program - FACT
-the optometry college is one of the best in the nation (top 5) - FACT
-hotel and restaurant management (top 5 in the nation - FACT
-the college of business is one of the best also - FACT
-and there is more...
...UH like many other schools are better than you think. they go "un-noticed" because they are not pimped out by the media and other industries seeking wealth. while you guys are too busy feeling yourselves UH and a several other schools in texas have become very very good institutions of HIGHER learning and have grown to "out shine" the "better schools", which in several cases are not "better".
am i saying those schools suck and UH is the best school ever??
no, what i am saying is, UH is just as good and several programs at UH have surpassed programs at other schools. heck i got in to ut, tech, baylor, and UH (amongst others) out of high school and i chose to go to UH!!! why, because their architecture programs were far better than the others. to this day i am not ashamed nor do i regret going to UH. since i've been in grad school i have come to realize how well i have been educated by UH in comparison to the students from schools all over the world!!!
...anyways.... back to football... so tell me why oh why did ut decline to play UH the entire time i was there (they havent played eachother since like 2002)???
-UH is not an automatic win and will compete!!
-as long as UH is seeing the success of the past years since '03, ut will continue to decline play against UH!! so go on ut and pick on programs that are down and out instead of actually competing!!
...so no!!! stanley you are a "numbnut"!!!
-go read a book and catch up on your history and speak something other than B.S!!! i'll let you use my old Uh library card!!!! LOL LOL LOL LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was the JUCO you flunked out of because your ACT score wasn't high enough for A&M? Forgive if I err on what the easier version of the SAT is called, I never took it. I did quite well enough to get paid for at least part of my undergraduate with just my GPA and SAT scores. I just remember kids far from a 3.0 sweating some score to get into UT or A&M that wasn't the SAT.

Cadillac of Universites? I guess if you mean a crappy car company that can no longer compete in the luxury car market and now sells gangster SUVs then it is a good analogy for UT. UT is not far from the Texas syndicate who stole their mascot and hand signs for their prison gang these days. I can remember why some UT fraternity chapters were shut down. Now, the top 10% rule has led to pretty much open enrollment on that campus. You can go to the crappiest high school in TX and be automatically admitted to UT with less than a 3.0 these days. The scary thing is the defenders of this new breed of affirmative action cite who well the sub 3.0 GPAs admitted under the top 10% rule do at UT. That doesn't show me top rate school. UT is not Ivy League and never will be. I don't think they have a single 10 ten program or number 1 program. A&M and UT both have a couple of top 20 programs but I know of none of their programs in the top 10 in the nation. They are tier 2 public universities when you look at it from a national perspective. Maybe not even tier 2.
You can't claim top of the line university when Chicago, Cornell, UC Berkley, MIT, Michigan, Havard, Princeton, Cal Tech, Brown, Vanderbilt, Duke, UVA, and even Rice are consistently ranked higher than UT. There are many more ahead of UT. UT is a tier two school at best. UT is not even the best academic institution in Texas. Rice far out ranks you. UT is not Ivy league, it may have a tier one designation for state funding but in reality it is a tier 2 school at best. I don't know many who turn down Harvard, Chicago, or even Rice to attend UT. Get over it.
Don't get me wrong. UT is not a bad school neither is UH but arrogant UT fans try to put this university on the level of Harvard and it isn't. They try to put UT football on the level of success of Alabama and they simply don't have the record to back that up. You have a few championships going way back but the SEC powerhouses have a lot more championships than UT could ever dream of. You just simply aren't that great. If you try to even think that UT is on the level of Michigan or Wisconsin, the rankings in most departments prove you wrong again. So do national championships won by those universities. Yet arrogant UT fans, who I honestly believe mostly did not graduate from UT perhaps, even have never even set foot on the campus, want to make the school out to be Harvard. It is not.
UT is not serious championship material and has not been in a long time. Vince Young was a fluke and so there was there one recent championship. I am going to laugh when OSU wins little 12 south and UT should be knocked from the top 10 when they do. I would see you at the liberty bowl but we play real teams from the SEC there not overrated arrogant teams who haven't seriously competed in years. OSU is this year's TTU to UT.
You might want to Google college rankings before you claim UT is an elite university.

Yea Texas is probably scared to play at a packed house of 32,000. That is if uh can get that many to come to a game.

Do you really believe THE University of Texas will end up in the liberty bowl? Is that a real bowl? You must have got some of the better crack down on Scott St.
Yea Texas is probably scared to play at a packed house of 32,000. That is if uh can get that many to come to a game.
You guys are trying to compare a horse and buggy school to the Cadillac's of Universities. You are insulting the morons.
My God you guys are lame! If they have any libraries there in Houston you might want to check out some books.
Peace out.

UH is ranked in the top programs of several programs. Hotel and Restaurant management goes at either 1 or 2 every year. The Politic Science department is in the top 10 and there are several others in top 40 Ph.D. programs. That is where UH gets most of its international students it is in their high ranked graduate programs. I have no idea what you were talking about with engineering schools. UH is not known as an engineering school as far as I know. Law, business, Political Science maybe but not engineering as far as I know. I don't think you know the first thing about the university.
BTW, UT is scared of UH we have the best record against them of any Texas schools and we have ruined their quest for a national championship on more than one occasion. UH is also blamed for ruining DKR's career because they kept him out of the championship in his next to the last season. There is nothing that UT is more scared of than the team that stopped DKR from winning it all coming into DKR stadium and killing its quest for a championship one more time. I really hope UT and UH play in a bowl game soon we can beat them again. It won't be this year because the fluke to UTEP but who knows maybe Texas will lose and be out of the BCS bowls. If so we will welcome you to the Liberty Bowl. I would love it if OSU is the one who kills UT's chances for playing for third. The only reason it won't be Alabama and Florida in the BCS championship game is because one will lose the SEC championship game.
So enjoy those victories agains ULM and Wyoming. The first real team they played almost beat them without their star QB. I really would not be surprised if OSU doesn't beat UT with or without Dez Bryant. Texas' only chance for a title is not a real one. The title game should be Alabama and Florida but will not be because one will lose the SEC championship. Here's hoping UT gets an invite to the Liberty bowl. It would be better than seeing the hype before the gators or Tide destroy them. If you can barely beat OU without Bradford, which BYU had a similar result, you shouldn't be 3 in the nation and you should have never been 2.

So low brow. No one outside of the Texas Gulf Coast has even heard of the u of houston. Go get some more Kool-aid or crack from the crack stand on Scott street.
Yes, all of those teams u of h played in bowl games are puff. Real puff. Phoney Bowls that no one watches.
Engineering schools--what? For driving trains? Get real, houston isn't on any list of top anything--that is just wishfull thinking.
You guys are sooooo easy! No one is scared to play houston. By the way--UT's record against houston is 16 wins to houston's 7. So they must have played sometime. Oh yea, it was a few years ago. 2 years ago, UT played Ohio State 2 years in a row--starting game--but the Big 12 is scared of houston. I understand your point about early games--but in u of h's case-- it doesn't hold water.
Keep your windows rolled up while driving past u of h--they may throw a degree in your car. OR, not that way you can actually get a degree.
peace--numbnuts...........

UT fears a loss to UH more than a loss to OU because it would kill any chance at being number 1. That is why perennial top 10 teams schedule pushovers for non conference games. They have to win those. Look at a team like Louisiana Lafayette. They had to play LSU and Nebraska early in the season because LSU and Nebraska wanted automatic wins for non conference games. That is why mid majors often have a huge disadvantage in the rankings. None of the top teams will play them if they are good. The top teams are too afraid that losing to someone from C-USA, Sunbelt, or WAC, maybe with the exception of BSU, would kill their chances of a championship. So ULM plays UT in game 1 and UT will not play UH.
There is also the other issue that UT always wanted UH to move the venue so UT could take away home field advantage and also make more money. In the days of the Astrodome, when UH was in decline, it looked more like a game in Austin due to fans showing up. UT would not play UH where UH had home field advantage. I am not sure UH would be so outnumbered now but it might be we actually have pro-sports teams in Houston. Austin doesn't.

THEY SUCK AND HAVE BEEN BAD FOR A WHILE!!!! a&m just lucks up every few years and has a fluke performance against ut and wins!!! ...please you idiot, how do you explain UH beating osu on more than one occasion, they have had many good wins and close games against the "better" teams!!!!

Really what else do you call a Ph.D. granting institution that has departments in the top 25% of the nation? UH Law is a tier 1 law school. Bauer college of Business is ranked in the top 25% of the nation. There are several departments in the top 40 of Ph.D. granting departments. You are the one making stupid comments here.
You should also check your facts Houston at the time of probation, Houston was the sixth school out of the 9 member SWC to be placed on probation. Only 2 schools in that conference were not busted in the last 1980s. Only Baylor, Arkansas, and Rice were not nailed by the NCAA during the 1980's. That means UT, TAMU, TTU, SMU (which got the death penalty), and TCU all cheated and got popped for it too.
Furthermore, the Houston football was in decline under the last years of Yeoman, yes the years under investigation. Pardee revived the program temporarily during the probation years. At the time the whole SWC was in decline. SMU's death penalty and all the other schools on probation hurt the money coming into conference from lack of TV coverage. The old SWC was place where you had to cheat to compete because everyone else was doing it. It is no wonder Arkansas left in 1990.
UT fans always want to claim UH was only good because they "cheated". Well were the Longhorns only good because they cheated? They got hit with probation as well in the 1980's. A lot of schools did. This was when the NCAA really got serious about its rules. When two thirds of your conference is put on probation in a 3 year period, I think you would call it a pretty corrupt conference overall.

Houston had a good team for four years while in the SW conference. After that, having to follow NCAA rules--probation and down hill. Even refering to Houston as a University is a joke!
Saying any University is scared to play Houston is just plain stupid. UT, ou, a&m etal play some of the best schools in the nation--USC, Ohio State, UCLA, Michigan, BYU and on and on. However-- they are scared of Houston----please, that's just ignorant. The proof is in their puffy conference.
Have a nice dream.

2. UT was scared to play UH, this is a fact, i'm not talking @#$%. i went to school there and i know what happened. before UH got a new coach (briles) UH was an awful team and UT used to play them year in and year out. soon as briles became the coash the team did a complete turn around and never looked back. UT ssaw this and did not want to play us anymore in fear of what happened to tech and OSU. UT knows UH is not a push over team.
3. this current win over OSU is not the first for UH in recent history. UH has played them for the last 3 or 4 years and have come away with 2 wins over OSU!! it's become a some what of a fun rivalry between OSU and UH cause they know UH is not a pushover. the only people who don't respect UH is the media and dumb ass fans like some of you on here.
