INSIDE SLANT

After his first collegiate start was a rousing success, Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel was struck by how much he missed playing in a game.

“I was surprised at how fun it was. At the college level, it was a lot more fun than in high school,” he said.

He’s hoping to continue the party Saturday when the Seminoles (5-5, 3-4 in ACC) play Maryland in their final home game at Doak Campbell Stadium. In addition to the game being senior day, it will be the final home game for long-time defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews, who has announced his retirement.

At issue is whether it might also be Bobby Bowden’s last home game, although he has given little indication it will be. Instead, Bowden has spoken privately and publically about returning next season. Bowden hasn’t had a losing season since his first one in Tallahassee, back in 1976. He needs a win Saturday to assure it won’t happen.

The Seminoles’ final game is the annual rivalry game against Florida, this time in Gainesville. Should the Seminoles beat Maryland, they will extend their 27-year streak—longest in the nation—of going to a bowl game.

“That was not our beginning-of-the-season goal,” Bowden said when asked about the bowl streak. “Our goal was to try to win the conference championship, get to a BCS bowl and see what happens.”

The Seminoles have played a lot of first- and second-year players this season, fueling hope for the future. In the middle 1980s, Bowden took his lumps, especially against Florida, before the 14-year run of 10-win seasons began in 1987. Bowden would love to repeat that feat.

“I would give anything that it was,” he said. “The characteristics are very much like it … I’m going to always look at it as the glass is half full. So when I look at it, I’m going to say yes.

“This thing is going to turn around. The question is, who’s going to be the head coach?”

NOTES, QUOTES

—TB Jermaine Thomas is the first FSU player to record three straight 100-yard rushing games since Greg Jones had five consecutive over the last two games of 2001 and the first three of 2002. Thomas needs to average 118 yards in his last three games (assuming the Seminoles make a bowl game) to become the school’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Warrick Dunn in 1996.

—The Seminoles will be wearing new uniforms in Saturday’s game against Maryland, all part of a one-game tryout that supplier Nike is asking its member teams to make. The most noticeable difference with FSU is the Seminoles will wear black helmets with a gold spear, rather than traditional gold helmets with a red spear. While fans have given unfavorable reviews of the design and ensemble, the players say they love the new uniforms. It’s caused the coaches to be wary of the players getting too focused on their new garb and less about the game. The Seminoles have not fared well in their uniform changes, going 1-3 in all-black or all-white uniforms.

• The Seminoles are on pace to average their lowest attendance (71,000-plus) in 11 years, prior to the expansion of the stadium to its current capacity of 83,000. Mindful of the problem, the school has done a marketing blitz in an effort for fans to arrive early for the senior ceremony and a special pre-game tribute to defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews.

SERIES HISTORY: Florida State leads 17-2

SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: Against a difficult schedule this season, the Seminoles rank second in the ACC in total offense, including a respectable fifth in rushing offense. For so many years, the Seminoles were at the bottom of the league in rushing offense. The Seminoles liked the way QB E.J. Manuel managed the team in his first start and they gave him a game plan featuring short passes and not a lot of high-risk throws. He is also a threat to run, but he’s been told to do it with caution, given the fact the No. 3 quarterback is a walk-on.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: Since winning the shootout against N.C. State three weeks ago, the Seminoles’ defense has shown improvement, albeit baby steps. The Seminoles have created more turnovers and forced more punts in the past two games (Clemson, Wake Forest), both on the road. They have made improvements in rush defense. Defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews said he can’t fault the effort of his players all season, but inexperience, injuries and other issues have affected play. Of course, he won’t say recruiting has been a problem, too.

QUOTE TO NOTE: “It took a lot of messing up for me to get things down pat. I was a little soft when Coach Jimbo (Fisher) got on me, but I just know he’s doing that just to get me better and just to get more out of me. And I want (him) to continue doing it, because it does bring the best out of me.”—Florida State TB Jermaine Thomas on how offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher’s coaching has made him a better player.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

THIS WEEK’S GAME: Maryland at Florida State, Saturday, Nov. 21—Emotions will flow during pregame when long-time Seminoles defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews is honored in a ceremony. It would stand to reason the Seminoles as a team will be fired up to send Andrews out in a memorable way in his final home game. The other significant aspect is FSU needs the win to assure a .500 record this season and continue a 27-year streak of going to a bowl game. Given the incentive, the Seminoles couldn’t have asked for a better conference opponent. Maryland is arguably the worst team in the league and will be starting a new quarterback.

KEYS TO THE GAME: Given the stakes for FSU, there should be no danger of the Seminoles not being focused and ready to play. But the one issue is to keep redshirt freshman QB E.J. Manuel from having a bad start. The Seminoles must avoid Maryland getting an early touchdown or a lead that can only fuel the Terps’ confidence and put some doubt on the FSU sideline. The Seminoles need to make sure Manuel can succeed with short throws and get support from a much-improved running game. On defense, the issue will be containing Maryland’s quarterback.

  PLAYERS TO WATCH:

QB E.J. Manuel—In his first collegiate start, Manuel was 15-of-20 for 220 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the 41-28 win over Wake. He also added 45 yards rushing and another touchdown.

PK Dustin Hopkins—In addition to his impressive success as a field goal kicker, Hopkins ranks fourth nationally with 21 touchbacks. Hopkins deserves an asterisk next to his name, because the three kickers in front of him all play at high altitudes.

LB Nigel Bradham—With 19 tackles in his last two games, Bradham has grabbed the team lead in tackles by the narrowest of margins, 66-65. Over the last five games, Bradham has registered 39 stops, including a team-high 27 of the solo variety. That’s a vast improvement from his 27 tackles (18 solos) through the first five games.

  ROSTER REPORT:

• OG Rodney Hudson (knee) is unlikely to play. He is considered the Seminoles’ best offensive lineman and one of the best guards in the nation. He sprained his knee last week against Wake Forest. “It doesn’t look (good),” FSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher said during his weekly press conference. “But I’ve learned to never say never.”

—Fourth-year junior Brandon Davis, one of two offensive linemen on the roster not recruited by current offensive line coach Rick Trickett, replaced Hudson in the lineup at Wake Forest.

—WR Richard Goodman (groin), who has missed the last four games with a groin injury, is unlikely to play, too.

Sucks for FSU and Ponder the dude was having a massive year and was going to give
UF a show....EJ Manuel is not bad though if he can live up to the hype....Hopefully he's learned heart and work ethic from Ponder....Really gonna miss seeing Ponder out there though the dude is awesome.

BTW the Heisman race is BS. Ponder has just as good if not better stats than most of those contenders. If our defense hadn't lost those close games he'd be right in there. It's all politics. Laugh all you want but it's true. Tebow is great but he and McCoy haven't really been all that explosive this year.
    Ponder 2176 yards passing 12 TD's 1 Ints.
    Tebow 1159 yards passing 8 TD's 4 Ints.
    McCoy 1806 yards passing 14 TD's 8 Ints.

Heisman should be about great players not great players on great teams only. I'm sure there are plenty other QB's out there with these stats.

I'm so glad to see the Alum filling up the stadium at homecoming. NOT! We have to be spoiled brats. We have a bad season and we can't even fill the upper deck? It's embarrassing. That's why the Big 10 laughs at us. They support their teams through thick and thin. I guess the student section slept in today. We need to support Bobby.
Go Noles offense. Gotta pick up the slack for those slacking DB's.

The difference between uf and FSU is recruiting,uf pays all their recruits and has been telling them that they will put them in the NFL as long as they produce on the field and that when they do get into the NFL they have to make big money contributiuons back to uf to keep the money train going, kind of like a loan.
They'll get busted sooner or later....

@ Jdoel dude there is now way in He!! Gruden is gonna be a positions coach at FSU... You don't become a world champion nfl coach and then become a positions coach in college or pros.. It just doesn't happen.. LOL It would be nice but I can probably see him actually going to Dallas or somewhere down the road, or maybe even head coach of say FSU or South Florida or UCF but not positions coach...

The answer is Ponder has to get rid of the ball quicker. The pocket breaks down. The WR has to do their job and get open quicker and stop relying on yac". The defense is a cluster @#$% the safeties are not athletic enough to hang with the big boys. They are beaten everytime which means the corners are giving 10yds before the play begins. The defense just needs better athleets. Maybe they have them in the #2 position if so nows the time to bring them out.

The problem is not the offense it is the defense the game has passed Mickey by. The team over pursues and misses tackles and god forbide if a team runs the spread. Mickey looks like he does not know what he is doing anymore. Bobby leaves after this year Jimbo hires new D-fense coordinator and in three year the Noles should be back.

I think that if everyone would take a breather and understand where the team is and where it has come from, instead of criticizing Bobby Bowden, the coaching staff on offense or defense, the players, and anyone at FSU, they will get back to where everyone wants them to be. Jimbo Fisher was brought in after a very lousy OC (unfortunately, Bobby Bowden's son, Jeff). Bobby, Jimbo, Chuck, Mickey, Rick, and the other not so known coaches need to get on the same page (no more internal conflicts), put out a message to the Board for Trustees, the University Governing Staff, and anyone else authorized to speak to the media that any more negative press released by them will result in actions against slander. You can have an opinion but, in the realm of good taste, the President of Trustees, the President of the University, or anyone officially attached to the school should never call for the dismissal of a coach during an athletic season even if all parties agree (unless there have been criminal acts), whether it's an in-season firing or after-season retirement. These types of announcements or disagreements only kill your recruiting and when you already have problems with recruiting that is irresponsible and intolerable. If I was the Board of Trustees, I'd be looking at replacing my President. The problem with these kind of press releases is multifaceted. First, you end up causing a week of distractions for your team (which obviously already has problems). Secondly, the student body has more ammunition to use to bash the team they already are bashing, instead of supporting them when they need it most. If you are a Trustee, you should be trusted to shut your mouth in times of turmoil and run your face in times of elation (not the other way around). All negative actions or thoughts (such as firings, decisions about firings, suggestions for retirement, etc...) should be handle in private and face to face with the person requiring reprimand (Never, ever, ever in the media). Any scandals or potentially scandalous activities should be sought out, investigated, and terminated by the athletic coaches and university governing body long before the NCAA or outside source ever learns about it. The less negative news the best. (FSU has had some serious recruit damaging scandals in the past 10-15 years. Further destroying recruiting and parental leanings for encouragement of enrollment.) Remember: The team is going to get better, the coaching could be a lot better, Bobby Bowden isn't necessarily the Biggest cause of recruiting or game result problems, Negativity of any type at a University affects recruiting in all sports and if you have a poor sports record to begin with it's going to seriously compound the problem. According to statistics, the team is doing outstandingly well and steadily improving. Their game scores may not be but, you have to give a rebuilding time to build and that could take 4-10 years. That is just the way it is. Look at South Carolina, granted I would not say they are in a rebuild but, they are where FSU is. Their recruiting isn't very good because in their location so many other schools have much better reputations. Steve Spurrier didn't exactly impress people in the NFL so a stigma followed his return to college football. Even so South Carolina has been gaining more and more prestige as they continue to get more competitive against their conference opposition. Who knows in a couple years they may begin to resemble the University of Florida of old. Those points I've made about South Carolina, also, apply to FSU, except resembling U of F, they might resemble FSU before long though. With good press and suppression of negativity in the media whether, Bobby retires this year or stays on would not be an issue. Please, stop shooting yourselves in the foot because you have a case of indigestion and swallow the Pepto it will work in time. John Gruden could be an appropriate acquisition at WR, TE, and RB coach. Match his announcer's contract and you'll probably get him.

People are forgetting that Jimbo Fisher has been in control for the most part of this season, Bowden has barely had the headset on and almost all the decisions are coming from Fisher. If you want a better season. Give Bowden some creative control back.

They got it wrong. Greg dropped the ball, then there was the phantom pass interference which then handed them the touchdown. It's not the players or coaches but more on the idiot calling the plays. Florida State has never been a big run the ball team.

Sure we had a guy do it 3 years in a row. But guess what. We didn't win any titles in those 3 years. However that same 1k rusher played in one of 2 title games as a freshman and didnt hit the 1k mark. And the year we went wire to wire as THE number one team in the country, which only one other team has been able to do so and only 2 teams have ever been able to do so, we did not have a 1k rusher.

Now last season not including the beat downs of the 2 1AA schools we scored 319 points and gave up 255. Thats an average of 29 points scored and 23.18 allowed in 11 games. ( I did not add the scored of the first 2 games vs the 2 lower division teams).

This season we have scored 135 while allowing 120. An average of 27 for to 24 allowed. But since the D did score 18 of those points its really more like 117 scored for an average of 23.4 a game. And that includes the lower division game this season. Now adding the 3 scores the D has this season and the, what , 4 times I can remember we should have scored it should really look more like 159 scored total with an average of 31.8 a game. and that's not even adding the XPs after the 4 I can remember.

The problem is the dang play calling. Trying to run the ball when you should pass and trying to pass when you should run. Pass first and run in the 4th when your up by 40. Teams could not stop the spread in the 90's all that great and they still can't stop it all that great now.

Once a dominant force...now just a meager threat. Mediocrity sucks! Say all you want, the problem is the team (mainly the coaches) lack a unified vision. You have the offense doing their stuff, you have the defense doing there's. What's missing is a central figure bringing both sides together with a sense of focus and team unity -- i.e., a head coach!

This does not look good. VT crushes Miami and Fl state beat by USF. Again big plays killed them becuase of missed assignments in the secondary. The O line was man handled by USF. I also have to question Jumbo Fisher. It appeared the USF coaching staff had a copy of his play book. well so much for this year.
