INSIDE SLANT

Although evidence is building to the contrary, Dan Hawkins insists his job as Colorado coach is not in jeopardy.

“Not at all,” Hawkins said.

Nonetheless, speculation exists that athletic director Mike Bohn has begun a coaching search, though he denied the rumors. The Buffaloes are sitting 3-7 overall and 2-4 in the Big 12 heading into Thursday night’s game at Oklahoma State.

Colorado is assured of missing out on postseason play for the third time in four seasons under Hawkins.

“Our efforts are in creating an environment for him to be successful,” said Bohn, who fired Gary Barnett at the end of the 2005 season and then hired Hawkins, who is 16-31 overall and 2-18 in games played outside of Boulder.

“We are putting every ounce of energy, support and effort into creating an environment for us to be successful. That’s where our focus is.”

One element in Hawkins’ favor is his insistence on running a reputable program. When he left Boise State to jump into a BCS program, Colorado was rocked by scandal. Hawkins has insisted that players attend class and also conduct themselves properly, but in the end, the win-loss record could be his downfall.

Although Colorado has improved dramatically on defense throughout this season, its offense remains ineffective. A switch at quarterback, away from Hawkins’ son, Cody, has not brought the desired results. Tyler Hansen has failed to move the Buffs consistently.

NOTES, QUOTES

• With discontent mounting over the performance of coach Dan Hawkins and a change possible, players are attempting to shoulder some of the blame. Various tactics, they said, have been tried during the season to drill the Buffs on proper technique, though they continue to be plagued by fundamental breakdowns and rank next to last nationally in penalties. Players admit to being edgy because no one in the Colorado administration has come out in definitive support of Hawkins’ future.

• A replay of a possible touchdown that was nullified in the Iowa State loss on Nov. 14 was sent to the Big 12 office for review. TE Riar Geer appeared to catch the ball in the end zone, but then dropped it after he was hit and taken to the ground. Had a touchdown been called, Colorado would have trimmed the deficit to 17-10 in the third quarter.

• Colorado players will attend classes on Wednesday, then practice before departing for Oklahoma State to play a Thursday night game.

Series History:   Colorado leads Oklahoma State 26-18-1 (last meeting, 2008, 30-17 OSU).

Scouting The Offense:   Problems with execution have plagued the Buffs all season, including against Iowa State. An interception by QB Tyler Hansen and two fumbles by RB Rodney Stewart crippled drives, as did major penalties. Colorado finished with 11 flags for 110 yards. Colorado did not score a touchdown until 3:17 remained, and then couldn’t get back on the field until just 23 seconds were left. The Buffs had four first downs inside the ISU 10 that resulted in three points.

Scouting The Defense:   The unit is playing well enough to keep the Buffs in games, a far cry from early in the season when Colorado gave up yards in massive chunks and was victimized by big plays. Colorado allowed a respectable 310 yards in the loss at Iowa State, though RB Alexander Robinson pounded away for his third 100-yard game and kept his offense on the field, rushing 30 times. The Buffs are often good at quick work, producing 44 three-and-outs during the season.

Quote To Note:   “It’s not all on the coaches. There also has to be some accountability from us. We just flat out have to play better.”—Colorado LB Jeff Smart.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

This Week  ‘S GAME: Colorado at Oklahoma State, Nov. 19—Once again, the Buffaloes are playing on an unusual day, the fourth of five games this season they’ll play on a day other Saturday. Thus far they’re 0-3 in such matchups, losing to Colorado State, Toledo and West Virginia in nonconference games. The chance for a late push looks grim with no bowl bid possible and competition stiffening. Oklahoma State is establishing itself as the second-best team in the Big 12 behind Texas.

A home game follows against Nebraska, which can win the North Division by beating Kansas State this Saturday.

Keys To The Game:   Despite an NCAA-imposed suspension that ended the collegiate career of All-American WR Dez Bryant, plus a nagging foot/ankle injury that slowed RB Kendall Hunter, the Cowboys remain potent. QB Zac Robinson is one of the most efficient passers in the Big 12 and also a threat to run. RB Keith Toston has capably replaced Hunter, who is back sharing the load. Defensively, OSU is much-improved and tough in coverage with CB Perrish Cox and LB Patrick Lavine.

Players To Watch:

WR Markques Simas—He posted back-to-back 100-yard receiving games against Texas A&M and Iowa State. He caught 14 passes for 263 yards.

WR Scotty McKnight—He became the fourth receiver in Colorado history with 60 or more receptions in a season. He has 62, along with a CU record of 34 consecutive games with a catch.

CB Jalil Brown—He ranks fourth in the Big 12 in passes defended, averaging 1.1 per game. He has two interceptions and nine breakups.

Roster Report:

• SS Ray Polk remains questionable after missing the Iowa State game with a broken toe. Polk played with the injury in a Nov. 7 win against Texas A&M.

• LB Jeff Smart played sparingly in the Iowa State game because of a stinger he’s dealt with for the past three weeks. The injury causes numbness in one of his arms.

• LB B.J. Beatty missed the Iowa State game with a concussion. He was replaced by LB Tyler Ahles, who made his first career start.

Fire the coach! He is a bum, his son is a loser and Colorado got snow balled by the success of Boise State! They are still winning, Hawkins was riding the coattails of a good system, he can not coach and it shows. I dont even live in Colorado and nationally CU is a joke and it's because of the coach FIRE HIM PLEASE!

Well what another bad year for the buffs,But the staff at CU just had to have hawkins, they thought they had a big time coach from Bosie State'but what they got was a man how can't coach a pee-wee team.I think after four years of losing the fans and the alethic department would wont to get rid of a coach who can;t win in a confrence that sends a team to a bcs bowl.Maybe thay should fire him now and not wait untill the end of the year. We need to give the buffs a jump start for next year, and bring in coach logan,so he can go out and recuit the young men we need to put CU back along the elite. If the alethic depatment wont to staned behind this so called coach thats there problem and thats fine, but don't the put fans thru another year of disappointment,we pay good money to see are boys play,so get rid of hawkins NOW and not later.Hawkins needs to go back to a small school where he can win and not worrie about trying to play with the big boys.It time to get back to playing big time football

Anyone who thinks Hawkins is the only embarrassment (or even the worst) is verrrrrry forgetful. I say bring back McCartney, who was the last coach to not embarrass this team. For those of you that don't remember, it was Neuheisal that permanently scarred the Buffs. Every coach since has just been a failure. We need a coach that can maintain discipline among the players and recruit and competitive team. The Buffs have been a huge joke for years, and with the exception of a few standouts, haven't played well as a team since "sharing" the title with Notre Dame.

Im glad to see the buffs win, but i remeber back in the days when the buffs would have ran all over this team.So dont think the buffs are over the hill, they still have a coach that cant coach in the BIG12.DAN HAWKINS needs to go,i dont know about the rest of the buff fans but to win ever other game is not exceptable. So when the buffs and hawkins get home let the boys get off and send hawins and his boy down the road, maybe to new mexcio, they have the same chemistry.Because they are bouth BIG BIG LOSERS.

Hay buff fans. I have never been so embarassed since coach Hawkins and his son have come to colorado. I feel it was a mistake to take the two on, we have not moved forward in the last four years. It seems to me that colorado has went from the elite to the bottom of the barrow because of Hawkins, colorado can't play ofense or defense this is not Boise state. Soi feel it is time for the athletic directors to termenate Hawkins as soon as possible. The CU athletic department needs to find Dave Logan and bring him in as the head coach of the Buffalo. The athletic department of CU made a mistake when they hired Hawkins, when coach Dave Logan was available for the job. I am sorry that CU will not make the bowl this year but you can thank coach Hawkins for thinking this is boise state. HAWKINS NEEDS TO GO NOW BRING IN DAVE LOGAN!!!!!!!!

Swinging gate punt formation--TOO CUTE. If you want 3 protectors in the backfield just seperate them a little like the big boys do.

As a loyal CU fan, and a big fan of Coach Hawkins in his Boise State days, this is flat out an embarassing way to begin a year that began with "10 wins, no excuses".... we have dropped two games to teams in inferior conferences with supposedly inferior talent.
I hear a lot of excuses coming from everywhere whether it be youth/ inexperience... just a few bad plays, lack of depth, etc...
I have hated the play calling thus far, our defense has played soft, rarely blitzing or getting any pressure on opposing QB's, yet somehow our corners are repeatedly left on islands and getting burned left and right.
On offense it took a first week blowout for the staff to realize Scott is our best offensive weapon (which may speak for itself) and he needs to be featured. Where is Andre Simmons? wasnt this our big impact receiving recruit? I know he came to camp late & prolly doesnt have full grasp of the playbook, but when we're behind by 30+ put the kid in and have him learn in gametime situations... At least his speed might open up some underneath routes.
Why is Cody Hawkins even in the game to take that concussion...The kid has some serious balls i Will give him that, but he hasn't shown the ability to lead a BIG XII team to victory throughout the course of a season- be it the arm strength, the height, or the void of talent on the outside.
The entire preseason I kept hearing how this team has finally developed a identity and they were going back to the smashmouth offfense. Why was that abandoned midway through the 2nd in the CSU game... in the toledo game? I understand we were behind big, but at that point we need to develop this team and have them practice at being successful in the phase of the game they feel they should excel at.
If we cant get our offense going against CSU & Toledo I will be scared to see our ineptness against BCS opponent West Virginia & Texas in the coming weeks...I dont think I can take another 70-3 drumming like Texas gave us a few eyars back.
Please Hawkins, find a way to motivate this team, if you said No Excuses before the season started stop rattling them off in every post game interview. I love the feel good nature and the entusiasm you have brought to Boulder. On paper you have been a great recruiter landing a Blue chip prospect each year...
It's time to make it happen, show us some progress, find a gameplan and Stick To IT!!!
Go BUFFS!!! redeem yourselves and give us some hope for 2010

As an alumni, and after amazing stints as the Big 12 N. champs, all I can say is Mike Bohnhead has single handedly destroyed the CU football and basketball programs. Both coaches may have been good in their previous roles but this is the Big 12.

"QB Seth Lobato, another true freshman who walked on, will be used as QB Cody Hawkins’ backup in blowout situations."

No offense to Mr. Lobato...but..."blowout situations"? WTF? You mean, when the Buffs are getting blown out? An offense averaging fewer than 20 ppg isn't a threat to blow out anyone.

    Dear Mike Bohn,
    We need a change...last week!!!
