INSIDE SLANT

Clemson knew before kickoff against Virginia that the Tigers had earned a berth in the ACC championship game by virtue of Boston College’s loss to North Carolina earlier in the day.

But the Tigers didn’t want to win the Atlantic Division because they had beaten BC back in September.

“We said we wanted to win it outright,” senior guard Thomas Austin said after the Tigers did just that with their 34-21 decision over Virginia. “We didn’t want it to come to a tiebreaker. That’s what championship teams do.”

The news of BC’s loss—delivered by coach Dabo Swinney before the game—“wasn’t a factor at all,” Austin continued. “You can’t let it change your motivation. You want to win no matter what. We want to win next week against South Carolina because that’s the game, and we only have 12 regular-season games on the schedule.”

Virginia didn’t go down without a fight. Clemson never trailed in the game, but the score was tied twice in the early going when the Cavaliers responded to Tigers’ scores with touchdowns of their own, and the Tigers led only 24-21 at halftime.

“We didn’t play smart in the first half,” Swinney said. “We weren’t disciplined with our eyes. And they had a lot of trick plays in the first half. Our staff made great adjustments at halftime, and we challenged them in the second half. This team never gave up, and they came out in the second half to win this game.”

The victory stretched the Tigers’ winning streak to six games. They haven’t lost since dropping a 24-21 stunner to Maryland back on Oct. 3.

After playing at rival South Carolina, they will get a rematch with Coastal Division winner Georgia Tech in the conference title game in Tampa on Dec. 5.

“We’ve been hearing about emotional letdowns for seven straight weeks,” senior tight end Michael Palmer said. “That’s not something we’re concerned about at all. I think our team will come out focused and ready for South Carolina.”

NOTES, QUOTES

• RB C.J. Spiller set the conference single-season for all-purpose yards after running for 58 yards, catching five passes for 39 more, and returning a punt for 17 yards to raise his total to 2,066 yards, 12 more than the record for all-purpose yards set by Virginia’s Thomas Jones in 1999. Spiller, who scored on a 4-yard run in the second quarter, is the only player in the nation to score at least one touchdown in every game played this season. So far this year, the Heisman Trophy candidate has scored 15 touchdowns in 11 games.

• The team’s tight ends tied Clemson’s school record for receptions in a season with 46 after senior Michael Palmer (three) and redshirt freshman Dwayne Allen (one) raised the total to 46. The previous record for receptions by tight ends was set by the 1970 team. Allen’s touchdown catch was the seventh score by a tight end, also tying a school single-season record set in 1974, when Bernie Cunningham had seven TD receptions by himself.

• QB Kyle Parker continued his solid recent play by going 19 of 26 for 234 yards and two touchdowns. He completed his first 10 attempts and didn’t have an interception. He has thrown for 1,051 yards over the past four games.

Game Ball Goes To:   WR Jacoby Ford—A senior, Ford had a career day for all-purpose yards with 211, which is 41 more than his previous best set against Temple in 2006. Ford had a 16-yard run, six receptions for 106 yards (one touchdown), and 89 yards on punt and kickoff returns against Virginia. His 22-yard return on Virginia’s first punt gave the Tigers possession at the Cavs 48-yard line, and they needed only four plays to score their first touchdown.

Keep An Eye On:   DT Rennie Moore—The sophomore backup had two sacks against Virginia, including one on Virginia’s final play. The stops accounted for 23 yards in losses for Virginia and give him 2.5 sacks for the season.

Quote To Note:   “Our first goal was to clinch the ACC Atlantic Division, and we did that. Our next goal is to win a state championship against South Carolina next weekend. Our third goal is to win the ACC championship game. Our fourth goal is to win a bowl game. We’re happy today, but we’re not done yet.”—Coach Dabo Swinney, after the win over Virginia gave the Tigers the division title.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Looking Good:   The defense held Virginia to just 40 yards total offense in the second half after giving up 233 in the first half. LB Kavell Conner led the way with a career-high 15 tackles, followed by LB Brandon Maye with 12 and FS Marcus Gilchrist with 11. The Tigers registered seven sacks, two by DT Rennie Moore and one each by LB Kevin Alexander, DE Ricky Sapp, NG Jamie Cumbie, DE Andre Branch, and LB Jeremy Campbell. QB Kyle Parker was 19-for-26 passing with completions to seven receivers for 234 yards.

Still Needs Work:   The Tigers wasted an early scoring opportunity when they couldn’t get a first down on third-and-1 from Virginia’s 4-yard line and then came up short on fourth-and-2 from the 5. Overall, the Tigers converted only five of 13 third-down situations. The Tigers also had to kick off from their own 15-yard line because of an unsportsmanlike penalty against TE Dwayne Allen, who saluted the fans in the end zone stands after his touchdown catch (it was military recognition day), and the Cavaliers had to go only 45 yards for their first touchdown.

Roster Report:

• LG Thomas Austin (foot), listed as “doubtful” on the late-week injury report, started, but DE Da’Quan Bowers (knee) missed his third consecutive game.

• K Richard Jackson assumed responsibilities for field goals, making two but missing from 52 yards, and extra points (making all four). K Spencer Benton handled kickoffs for the Tigers. Benton had one touchback in seven attempts, and the Cavaliers started three other drives from inside their 20-yard line.

Amber---ask NFL scouts if Spiller is overrated, Virginia keyed on him which enabled Parker/Ford to have big days. If you actually follow football you would know that teams have been implementing "pooch" kicks and even kicking out of bounds to avoid the aforementioned "overrated" threat. I'm leaning towards Ingram at this point but wanted to clarify your ignorance.

Again you make part of my point for me and consider this year Carolina, Kentucky, Arkansas and Ole Miss will all make bowls with 6-6 or 7-5 records and most years three SEC teams with those records go to bowls. The SEC has a slight edge on the ACC in recent Years due to Florida State and Miami being down, I will not argue that. But numbers speak for themselves and the bowl records are close no matter who you play. The ACC and SEC face off in the Peach and Music City bowls every year and if you look at the histories of these bowls the generally spilt them 1-1, so no edge there. the SEC also has teams that play in those lower tier bowls like the .com bowl and Indepenence bowl so to take a shot there is kind of being one sided. The ACC lost the Gator bowl over a money issue and not as you try to state a better team. The Big 12 number 4-5 is not better than the ACC 3. That is why this season, the gator bowl has the big least number 2 versus Notre Dame at 6-6/7-5. Wow that in itself shows how far this bowl has slipped. The SEC has better bowl ties with the Cotton, Capital one, BCS, Outback, and Peach bowls while the ACC has really only the BCS and Peach as major bowl tie ins but that is on the league not the teams. Bottom line is the SEC is the best conference for top tier teams but 1-12, this conference is not the best in the country.

yeah its a narrow gap, until you consider the ACC teams with records of 6-6 are playing the equivalent of high school teams - while the SEC plays much better opponents. Anyone else wonder why you lost the gator bowl form the ACCs bowl lineup? thats why.

You line the ACCs best up agianst the SECs best and bad things happen to the ACC, remember Alabama last year? Kinda hard to forget i would imagine.

Post #25 seems like another case of a Carolina boy with Clemson envy. A few facts to over ride the misconception put out by post #25. The ACC was actually 4-6 last year in ten bowl games and not 2-7 in nine bowl games as you said, get your facts right before posting false information. For the record, the SEC went 6-2 in eight bowl games, meaning they could only get 8 of 12 team bowl bound as compared to the weak ACC, which got 10 of 12 teams in a bowl. Since the year 2000, the teams in the ACC are 41-35 in bowls with a 54%winning percentage. The SEC on the other hand is 41-29 with a 59% winning percentage. This is such a wide gap isn't it post #25, grow up a few year of good play does not make any one conference superior, it just means that they have had a few good years. History only says that in at least the past ten years that the ACC gets one more team bowl bound than the SEC and that the two leagues have a similar winning percentage. If not for the 2006-2008 bowl record of 19-7 for the SEC compared to the 10-16 record for the ACC, we see from 2000-2005 that the ACC with a 31-19 record versus the SEC's 23-23 bowl record was vastly superior. So just a note to everyone please be knowledgable before posting you lack of knowledge on blogs as some one is likely to call you out as being jealous or a moron as I have done to post #25, in this case both apply.

I guess thats why the ACC won 2 of 9 bowls the last year at the end of the year when all we heard was how "good" the ACC was again yet flopped in the bowls. Its just a repeat of history and the ACC still sucks when compared to other conferences. Clemson has a losing record against every SEC school but Carolina unfortunately - which is a mental problem.

To all the ACC naysayers of the Gamecock faithful,
Granted Florida is always at the top of the "perennial powerhouse" SEC, and usually undefeated, and granted, historically, the SEC has been the most powerful NCAA football conference, If you take a look at the BCS top 25 as of today, you'll find four ACC programs in that list as opposed to three SEC programs. If you'll also notice the wins/losses of ACC/SEC programs you'll notice that other than undefeated Florida and, only recently (three yrs.), a surging Alabama program, all the other schools are mired in worse records across the board than ACC programs are.
I'm just saying that currently the ACC programs are swelling while the SEC programs are somewhat stagnant.
And the only reason S.C. fans brag, nonstop, about being in the SEC is that they have no grounds for it when it comes to Clemson. Clemson's won like 11 of the last 14, and around 23 of the last 32 contests, dating back to the 1975 Clemson debacle in Columbia.
Would u rather be on an ocean liner stuck in the boiler room, or on a nice runabout enjoying the sun beaming down on the ocean.

Post 16, I honestly agree with you and do not know why the results have not been better. I keep hearing that Dabo and Napier are not getting along and that Dabo is overriding his playcalling, do not know the truth to it but am hearing it a bunch. Brad Scott is a great recruiter but not a great coach. I agree if this continues at seasons end keep him to recruit but get a new line coach and possibly replace Napier if he and Dabo are not on the same page. The offense this season is in trouble due to a lack of experience at QB with Parker and Korn. If things continue, I think Korn should get more time as he can hardly do worse than Parker at this point. The problem I see is coming next season when Spiller and Ford are both gone. However the future is bright with Boyd the possible answer at QB if Korn or Parker do not produce and McNeal at WR and a crop of talented RB's plus the usual strong D, Clemson will be fine. I just worry that Dabo may not survive the backlash of rebuilding the program that while Bowden did a good job did not get the best recruiting classes while here.

I usually stay back and do not say much, then an idiot like post 15 has to make a comment. First, Dabo will be coaching in five years when Spurrier is in an assitsed living home. Second, how is being in the powerful SEC working out for Carolina, who is nearly every year 7-6 and in the bottom half of the league below Fla, Ga, Tenn., Ala, LSU, and Auburn. Good move in Columbia to go to a league where you will never win a league title but then again they only won one ACC title in like 30 years in that weak conference. Unlike Carolina, Clemson stays with its conference and does not move around and then accept the money to play in a league they cannnot compete in. You are right it is rebuilding time in Clemson so a question for a fan of a program that has been rebuilding for the entire 34 years of my life, how long does a good rebuilding project take? In Columbia, we are still waiting for that answer as despite the ten or so coaches that have passed through over the last 30 years, none have been able to have any long term successs. That has to eat at you to try so hard and every year be 7-6 and once in a blue moon have a strong year like 9-4. It is the Norm at Clemson and if Dabo does not win next year, he will be gone. It is called a winning tradition and Clemson has the only one at the 1-a level in our state, the other program in Columbia just hopes and dreams that maybe this will be they year. It might be the year and i wish carolina well because when a program has never been great finally shows promise it is good for football. It is just too bad that ignorant fans with narrow minds make others look down upon a program because of their petty jealousy. Clemson will be back strong and good luck to Carolina, there is nothing that would please me more than to see Clemson-Carolina game with both team being ranked and with winning records instead of the current situation where Clemson is usually 7-4 playing a 5-6 or 6-5 Carolina team.

I think the Clemson coaches has the team thinking that a loss to TCU is no big deal. It is to me! We pay $48 for a ticket and the coaches say it is no big deal. Naturally, Dabo don't have to buy tickets!!

Korn should do what is best for him because Boyd will probably be the starter come next season. Parker is talented but young and makes plenty of mistakes. Spiller cannot do it all with just a little help from Ford. This team is solid on defense, however with Ford and Spiller leaving after this season,I think we need to wonder what kind of offense will be left next year. No one on offense besides Spiller and Ford show any potential and that has to be a worry. This team will win seven games this season but as a long time tiger fan I am tired of potential and want results. This is not South Carolina and 7-5 season are not acceptable. The ACC is open every year ot be won and Clemson is not taking advantage of a chance to improve, with the talent level this team should be winning 9 games every year. This year incoming recrutiing classes was weak but Dabo already has a top 15 class coming in for next year, however that will not help much until 2011 and that could be too late for Dabo, only time will tell.

You don't play two QBs like you do two RBs, it is not at all the same thing. The bottom line is this is the same ole Clemson that cannot win the big game and everyone in the country knows it. The team is no better now than it was with Bowden. This team has become a joke. Maybe when Daba Daba dumbass runs the program into the ground we will get a good coach.
We had ample opportunity to bring in a good coach last year but are apparently to cheap to really be a football school.
This team has had three top twenty recruiting classes in the last four years and there they sit unranked and unable of beating a team with less talent than they have on their own home field. Dabo is not a good coach, get that through your thick heads!!
Its ridiculous and I am sick of it. Dabo is not the answer anymore than Bowden was and Willy Korn should go ahead and transfer good riddance.

Play your best 11 on offense and defense. You are trying to win games, not a popularity contest.
Bowden picked his starters and that was it. Took an injury to change that whether they were effective or not. Maybe next series they will bounce back. If not that one, then maybe the next. Nothing changed. Look where it got him. Maybe he has money in his pocket but not much of a reputation as a Coach willing to do what was necessary to win. Constantly had that "deer in the headlight look" except against the COOTS!
    Go Dabo!!!
