INSIDE SLANT

Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly likes to emphasize quality over quantity when it comes to his practices.

As the season progresses, victories become more crucial, but the emotional and physical burden also begins to take its toll. With his team in contention for a Big East Conference title and BCS bowl berth, Kelly is running a tight ship in practice.

“The word we use is ‘purposeful’,” Kelly said. “We ask our guys for an hour and a half of focus. We’ve backed off our practice time. We’ve been able to keep our players fresh.”

Cincinnati embarks on its second bye week after beginning the season 10-0 for the first time in school history.

The fifth-ranked Bearcats will put their 16-game regular-season winning streak on the line in the home finale against Illinois on Friday, Nov. 27 at Nippert Stadium.

UC is ranked fifth in both major polls and the BCS standings. The Bearcats finish the season on Dec. 5 at Pittsburgh in a game that’ll likely decide the Big East title.

Much like the first bye week, Kelly will spend a considerable amount of time self-scouting with his coaching staff. The players will get some much-needed time off. A primary area of focus offensively will be on shoring up the running game.

“We’ll spend quite a bit of time on the things we need to work on, especially the running game,” Kelly said. “We still need to iron out some tendencies. Running the football will be key for us the next two games.”

Despite a top-five ranking and a shower of national accolades, Kelly stopped short of saying Cincinnati’s program has arrived.

“I still feel like we haven’t arrived,” he said. “Our football program is still building. We still have a ways to go. There were so many years of not being relevant. Our team has arrived, but our program is still in the process. That helps keep us focused.”

NOTES, QUOTES

• Cincinnati announced it will play its 2012 game against Virginia Tech at FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins. The Bearcats lost to the Hokies in last year’s Orange Bowl. Virginia Tech leads the all-time series 5-4. Cincinnati also plays at Ohio State in 2012.

• The Bearcats have won 11 consecutive games at Nippert Stadium and 16 straight regular-season games dating back to last season. UC began the season 10-0 for the first time in school history.

• The Bearcats did not lose a fumble this season until the first quarter of the Nov. 13 win over West Virginia. UC has committed just six turnovers (one fumble, five interceptions), and ranks fifth nationally in turnover margin.

• Cincinnati is 18-7-1 all-time when ranked.

Next Game:   Illinois at Cincinnati, Nov. 27—The first-ever meeting between the two schools will kick off at noon and be televised nationally on ABC. Bearcats QB Tony Pike likely will make first start since injuring his forearm on Oct. 15, setting up a confrontation with one of the nation’s most dynamic signal-callers in Illini QB Juice Williams. Illinois is 2-2 all-time vs. Big East opponents. The Bearcats are 8-38-2 vs. the Big Ten. Cincinnati last faced a Big Ten opponent on Sept. 16, 2006, losing 37-7 at top-ranked Ohio State.

This Week  ‘S MISSION: Brian Kelly plans to give the team some much-needed time off. When the players hit the practice field, the offensive emphasis will be on the running game. The Bearcats are coming off back-to-back 200-plus yard rushing games. Kelly believes the running game is especially important in late November and December when weather conditions might not be conducive to the pass. In addition, opponents have been playing more Cover-2 and doubling UC’s receivers. Cincinnati hopes to firm up its running game to open more holes for Isaiah Pead, who had 175 rushing yards in the win over West Virginia.

December At A Glance:   Following the regular-season finale against Illinois on Nov. 27 at Nippert Stadium, one game will remain. The Big East Conference title and the league’s automatic bid to a BCS bowl likely will be at stake when Cincinnati faces Pittsburgh on Dec. 5 at Heinz Field.

Quote To Note:   “They just need to watch film. And when they do, they’ll see a very deep, talented team. Illinois is one of the deeper teams we’ll play. We don’t have to worry about their record. As you’re trying to gain relevance as a program, anytime you can get a Big Ten team in your venue, it’s good for your program.”—Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly on his team not looking past Illinois despite its 3-7 record.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Looking Good:   Cincinnati’s vaunted spread offense, known for its big-play passing ability, has added a new weapon in recent weeks—a rushing attack. The Bearcats have rushed for more than 200 yards in consecutive games. In last week’s win over West Virginia, sophomore Isaiah Pead ran for 175 yards and a touchdown. With opposing defense’s doubling up on top playmaker Mardy Gilyard, D.J. Woods and Armon Binns have had big receiving games.

Still Needs Work:   Cincinnati’s defense, which played better than expected the first eight weeks despite returning just one starter, has allowed a combined 403 rushing yards in the past two games. Last week the Bearcats struggled to contain West Virginia QB Jarrett Brown, who rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown and passed for 188 yards and a TD. UC allowed 201 yards rushing in a 47-45 win over UConn the previous week.

Star Watch:   Sophomore RB Isaiah Pead provided Bearcats fans with a glimpse into his promising future with 18 carries for 175 yards and a touchdown in the win over West Virginia. Pead had runs of 52 and 43 yards, the latter setting up the victory-clinching field goal with two minutes remaining. Pead, who shattered Archie Griffin’s high school rushing records at Columbus Eastmoor Academy, has rushed for 687 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 6.8 yards per carry.

Critical Decision:   Zach Collaros’ performance in four starts for the injured Tony Pike had Brian Kelly laboring over the decision of when to bring back Pike, who was listed as a Heisman candidate prior to injuring his left forearm on Oct. 15 in a game at South Florida. After wavering a few times in his decision, Kelly decided to start Collaros last week against West Virginia. Pike entered the game twice, throwing just four passes, two for touchdowns, in the 24-21 victory.

Roster Report:

• Senior QB Tony Pike entered last week’s game with 10:05 remaining in the first quarter, making his first appearance since Oct. 15 when he injured his left forearm in a win at South Florida. He threw TD passes of 10 and 6 yards in a 24-21 victory over West Virginia. Pike could make his first start since the injury on Nov. 27 against Illinois.

• Senior RB Jacob Ramsey did not play against West Virginia due to a sprained foot. Sophomore Isaiah Pead got the bulk of the carries, rushing for 175 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown. Darrin Williams was listed as the No. 2 running back behind Pead.

• Junior RB John Goebel is playing with a broken right hand. Goebel rushed for 607 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Due to the injury, he has appeared in just six games, mostly on special teams. Goebel has six carries for 10 yards.

I remember a ND poster saying UCONN that laid 45 points against UC would lose to ND. Well you lost that makes the Big East 2-0 against ND. If you think Brian Kelly is going to coach this losing team you are wrong my friend. It was reported on College Game Day by Lee Corso it would cost ND 15-18 million to buy out Charlie's contract and another 5 million for a new coach and that is a lot of money for a ND. I still think ND should rejoin the Big East.

currently the computer has UC ranked 3 with a score of 0.9100 if they win out they will finish second in the computer as Fl or Bama will knock the other out of the top 5 and Texas would have to get upset for UC to get ranked second or third in the Harris and coaches polls. TCU has two games left against teams with a combined 5 wins so if UC can win decisively against PITT and ILL they will be looked upon more favorably by the voters in the two human polls. TCU does not play a game in the final week so when it comes to the human polls they will be a distant memory in the final vote. However, I do not see Texas getting upset it would be a long shot. If those two things happen 1. a Texas upset special and 2. win out decisively UC could find themselves ranked second in the final BCS avg. giving them a title shot.

If cincy can win out, they will be playing a team with a loss in a bowl game the same will go for boise and tcu .The bcs will make sure there is only one game with two undefeated teams and for cincy to get in it texas and tcu would have too lose. I really would like too see cincy playing florida or alabama in the sugar or orange

After Brian Kelly leaves UC will get a better coach. Every team he leaves ends up still doing well and winning. Just like every time UC loses it's starting QB the next QB in is better and the next coach in will be better.

Steve K you are a moron your statement is incoherent obviously people in Columbus can not spell. USC is not that great they lost to Washington (who did not win a game at all last year) Oregon (who lost to Boise State a non BCS school and Stanford) struggled at home against Oregon State when UC dominated on the road. Penn State like Ohio State refuses to come to Nippert OSU canceled the 2012 game at PBS and paid 1 million to move it to Columbus. Miami Fl I believe is on the schedule in 2011 but there is no guarantee they will be good then. The problem with non conference games are they are scheduled years in advance. By the way the little 11 conference lost 6 of 7 bowl games last year Big East won 4 of 6. 5 of 8 Big East teams have a record of 0.750 or better after playing eight games little 11 can not say that.

I just noticed something UC will have played 4 teams this year ranked in the top 25 Oregon State and WVU both ranked 23 in the coaches polls when they played those two teams. USF 21 and PITT 8 in the AP polls. Florida and Texas combined played only 4 ranked teams and not one out of conference.

Syracuse beat Northwestern. Northwestern beat Iowa number one in the little 11 conference. Therefore, since Syracuse is the worst Big East team having had beat a quality Northwestern who beat Iowa the Big East is a better conference than the little 11.

daver, what is up with this "in synch" garbage? Stop defending Ohio State, they are worse than Cincinnati this year and the only thing they can do this year that will give me any respect for them is beat the overinflated Iowa team. A great team can beat other teams even when they are off balance. UC has been in essence "out of synch" for the past two and a half games with the loss of their QB, but had no problem stomping teams at the level of Purdue, and even a ranked USF team. Great teams don't lose to inferior opponents, ever.

I just noticed something. People really do hate the Big East. Just look at the rankings. Look more specifically at the teams that are roughly 6-2. Big East has three teams in that boat, West Virginia, South Florida, and Rutgers. NONE OF THEM ARE RANKED.

Now, let's look at the other 6-win teams that are... Virginia Tech (6-3...), Miami (FL), Oklahoma State, Brigham Young, USC, California, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma (with 5 wins...), and Arizona (another 5 winner...). That's ten teams with a record similar or worse compared to WVU, USF, and Rutgers. I understand not ranking WVU and Rutgers because of poor SoS, but to snub USF is a joke.

    Real simple,

Have a playoff for college football,

Whats wrong ACC and SEC coaches, you have it your way now, sacrifice a few bucks and do what is right. Oh yea, your schools would loose to many millions, thats' the problem!, it's about money, and not what is far for all, only for just a "few" schools. Man up, do what is right! and have playoffs!!!

Who knows, maybe you can figure a way to cheat in that new playoff system as well.... your good at it!!

I dont think OSU has been overrated at all this year and last. They were 18 then get in synch and put up a very convincing win only to move to 17 even with all the losers right in front of them? Thats not overrating. The polls did the same last year and I figured they should have beat texas and they should have. OSU is paying for blowing the big ones against FSU and LSU. Anyone honest should also know those games were do to poor mental conditioning and werent like the OSU that played those seasons. In the LSU game I was actually amazed that they kept any spirit to play at all after the refs continually gave LSU TD's no matter what OSU did. The FSU game was partly a result of too much glamour and contentment of their status before hand.

I think UC should be at least #4 but I dont think I could say UC would definitely beat OSU. I think it would be close with either one winning or UC blowing them out. It depends. If OSU got in synch offensively they could even blow out cinci. OSU should be about #12 and cinci 3 or 4 even though I think they might possibly still beat the top 1 or 2. UC has some potentially very tough teams to face with all or nothing game plans. If cinci continues undefeated they definitly should be in the title game.
I think the # 8 BCS ranking after last week has to be the craziest BCS ranking I ever saw.

Ok first off, Cincy would beat Ohio State and judging by the way Pryor has played recently...Cincy would easily beat the OSU. Cincy should be number 4 in the polls and fell 3 spots only because they played a weak Louisville team and the next game against Syracuse wont help any but they should be fourth. Iowa is a lucky team right now who will lose somewhere and USC is a joke this season. In the end though Cincy WILL be in the BCS title game because Alabama will fall to eithor LSU or @Auburn, and Florida. I could also see Florida stumbling against longshot Georgia or @SC. Oregon should handle USC and Cincys wins against ranked Pitt and WV should put above TCU and Boise and in a BCS title showdown against Texas, and dont be suprised if Cincy gives Texas a run for their money!!! OSU has been overrated for years, will still lose 2 more games this season to Iowa and @Penn St. I think Cincy would pull out an easy 38-17 win over OSU with 3Pryor turnovers!!

Probably been said a millions times. HOW DID CINCI DROP TO 8? USC should have dropped even before last game. Their defense sucks and their offense isnt that great either. USC should be about 12. How has cinci made a worse showing than USC, TCU, Boise, Iowa? I would have figured even the coaches poll would have put them ahead of USC this week.

UC has been in a BCS conference since only 2005. That means, we have played in a BCS Bowl 25% of the time we've been in a BCS conference, 40% of the time if we play in one this year.

That means, our program has had four years to recruit and play a schedule strong enough to compete at the highest level. In that time, here's the progression of our team:

    05-06: 4-7,
06-07: 8-5 (UC wins International Bowl),
    07-08: 10-3 (UC wins Papajohns.com Bowl),
08-09: 11-3 (UC loses Orange Bowl),
    09-10: 7-0,

We've had 10+ wins the past two years, bowl bound in the last three. Seriously, we haven't come out of nowhere. If you negate our transitional year into the Big East, we are 36-11 playing a normal BCS-quality schedule... In that time, we've played 14 ranked teams, and beat 8 of them, including a win against a top ten team, near the end of the season. Our history may not be long, but in the short amount of time we have been on relatively equal footing with the big dogs, we've more than held our own.

If you want to talk history in general, UC is one of the oldest football teams in college football, with one of the oldest stadiums (hence its smaller size) and a rivalry older than most of the big ones today. And yes, UC HAS beaten OSU before, in 1897, 34-0 (they took out LSU that year too, 28-0).
