INSIDE SLANT

You won’t hear any complaining out of the Boise State Broncos about their Fiesta Bowl showdown with No. 3 TCU. The game will be played Jan. 4 in Glendale, Ariz.

The matchup has been ripped by many because it pits the two non-BCS conference squads against each other in a BCS game. However, Boise State considers the game a chance to play the highest-ranked team available and avenge its only loss of the past two seasons.

TCU beat Boise State 17-16 last year in the Poinsettia Bowl.

“It sits real uneasy with all of us,” sophomore defensive tackle Billy Winn said of that defeat. “It’s like that acid in the bottom of your stomach. It makes you sick.”

The game isn’t exactly a rematch. Boise State lost 10 of the players who started in last year’s game; TCU lost 11 Poinsettia Bowl starters and its offensive coordinator.

Both teams have played better, and are ranked higher, this year.

“The interesting thing about this matchup is TCU’s better—and we didn’t get it done (last year),” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. “We’re going to have to be much better than we were last year ourselves.”

NOTES, QUOTES

Scouting The Offense:   The Broncos have scored at least 40 points in seven straight games and won by an average of nearly 30 points since a midseason challenge from coach Chris Petersen to refine their play. Most noticeably, the red-zone offense has become almost unstoppable, and the offensive line has blossomed into a strength. The offense has produced a Heisman Trophy candidate at quarterback (Kellen Moore), three players with at least 14 touchdowns (wide receivers Titus Young and Austin Pettis and tailback Doug Martin) and a 1,000-yard rusher (Jeremy Avery). The only concern is injuries, which deprived the Broncos of two of their three starting wide receivers and their fullback down the stretch.

Scouting The Defense:   The Broncos have shown a weakness against power-run teams dating to last year’s Poinsettia Bowl loss to TCU. It might be the only weakness on a group that has great speed and a terrific defensive line, led by Ryan Winterswyk and Billy Winn. The defense hasn’t been challenged often but has responded well to those situations—against teams such as Oregon and Nevada.

Matchup To Watch:   TCU DE Jerry Hughes vs. Boise State OT Nate Potter—Potter developed into the Broncos’ best offensive lineman as the year progressed and was named to the All-WAC first team. He and RT Garrett Pendergast must deal with Hughes, who won the Hendricks Award as the nation’s top defensive end. The Broncos lead the nation with just five sacks allowed this year.

Other Key Matchups:

TCU’s offensive line vs. Boise State’s defensive line—The Broncos played the Horned Frogs last year with about half of their defensive line. They are healthy and loaded up front this year, which could make a significant difference. The Horned Frogs were able to control the ball with the run game last year.

Boise State QB Kellen Moore vs. TCU’s defense—Moore is the nation’s most efficient passer, and he leads the nation’s highest-scoring offense. TCU leads the nation in total defense and ranks in the top six in nearly every other defensive category. A big day for Moore would jump-start his 2010 Heisman campaign. He finished seventh this year.

Quote To Note:   “It’s that rematch on a bigger and better stage. We’re looking to take advantage of it.”—Boise State senior CB Kyle Wilson, on the Fiesta Bowl.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Bowl Breakdown:

Boise State vs. TCU, Fiesta Bowl, Jan. 4, Glendale, Ariz.—Boise State is 25-1 in the past two seasons. TCU is 23-2. Some scoffed at the idea of pairing them in the Fiesta Bowl, but this should be a terrific matchup between two up-and-coming programs. Last year’s battle in the Poinsettia Bowl was tense throughout.

Players To Watch:

TB Doug Martin—He finished the season on a three-game tear—37 carries, 332 yards and eight touchdowns. He had 15 carries in the previous four games as he battled a muscle pull.

QB Kellen Moore—The nation’s most efficient passer has 39 touchdowns and three interceptions. His lack of mistakes has allowed the Broncos to rank near the top of the country in turnover margin.

DE Ryan Winterswyk—He has rattled quarterbacks all year with almost constant pressure. He has 8.5 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss.

WR Austin Pettis—He caught 14 touchdown passes in the first 11 games, then got hurt at the beginning of the Nevada game. He’s questionable for the bowl with a lower leg fracture. The Broncos need him because of his ability to make catches in tight spaces.

Roster Report:

• WR Austin Pettis, who missed most of the final two games with a lower-leg fracture, is making progress and is questionable.

• LB Derrell Acrey didn’t play in the regular-season finale but will return for the bowl. He is a contributor at middle linebacker.

• WR Tyler Shoemaker (hernia) is expected to return for the bowl.

• FB Richie Brockel, LB Daron Mackey, RB D.J. Harper and RB Matt Kaiserman are out for the year.

Lynch, the problem with your comments is that no one have proven that boise st. can't win those games.
Everyone said they would get beat by oklahoma and everyone said that they would get beat by oregon and once again everyone said that they would get beat against tcu and alabama is the only team of those "big four" that proved that they could do it. all boise is asking for is a chance as is everyone else that ends up undefeated. their is no true champion until there is a playoff.

How come Boise is the only team that is somehow required ot beat the top teir of teams back to back to back or else it doesn't matter that they could beat any of them? Florida couldn't do it. Texas couldn't do it. TCU couldn't do it. Cincinatti couldn't do it. Iowa, Pen n State, Oregon.....none of them could do it.

Yet Boise is the only team where it's some kind of mythical requirement.

CAN Boise beat TCU? yes. CAN boise beat Florida, probably. CAN boise beat Texas, probably. CAN boise beat Alabama, no. Can Boise beat any 4 of the top ranked teams in back to back to back to back weeks? NO CHANCE!!!...They're a great team so i give them credit that they CAN beat anyone, but playing 4 great teams 4 weeks in a row would wear on them and they'd have to play their best game every week. Can they play that best game once or even twice? Yea, they can, but they can't do it repeatedly against top notch teams. If they were in any of the big-6 conferences they would contend for the conference championship and MAYBE win it, but they wouldn't be undefeated and would be in the same position they're in now. They'd be a top 10 team possibly in a BCS bowl on the outside looking into the national championship game. That's why I'd hate it if they made the national championship next year. Heck, if they made it they CAN win it, but if it were a tourney and a true test of who the best team is they'd have no chance.

I just would like to say CONGRADULATIONS!

TCU had their heads up their wazzo's and thouhgt this would be a cake walk. No one gave you a chance and your defense out played TCU's. All I can say is that TCU would have lost by 50 to Texas seeing how they thought they belonged in the BCSCG instead of Texas. I knew you'd win.

Hopefully BSU will get a chance (soon) to play in the BCSCG as it would be well deserved.

im sick of people telling boise state to stop complaining about their schedule, and about not being in the national championship, and not being considered one of the top teams in the nation. not one coach as said any of that. not one player has said they deserve more respect. its people who are haters on the litte guys. they would love to play bigger schools. and whether its nobody wanting to play them or what it doesnt matter. they dont chose to be ranked as high as they are. they dont claim to be as good as their ranking or better thank it. they go out and play football the way they know how to and the polls take care of where they stand. dont be bad mouthin them when you dont know one ounce of what goes on here in boise. watch every game then talk about whether they are a good team or not.

This is what's great about college football. Regardless of how good a team is, there are diehard fans. The only reason TCU and BSU are ranked so highly is because they are undefeated. Yes, it is true that BSU played only one real team, Oregon, this year, but they won that game. The fact, that the rest of their schedule is made up of teams who can't even boast a winning season or did have a winning season because they whooped up on the other horrible teams in the conference, is irrelevant.

The winner of the TCU/BSU game is tantamount to kissing your cousin. Go for it fellas, we're all proud of you.

I believe this game for BSU is bigger than the win over OU. And I think the reason why is, because so many people think TCU is the best team in the country! BSU you have a golden opportunity here! This is the third ranked team in the country! A win here would propel you very close to the top of the polls! A loss, well it could set you back to the stone-age! I firmly believe a short quick passing game 5-10yds, sweeps, draws, screens, etc is the best way to keep that aggresive TCU defense off balance. And that is the key to scoring, keeping them guessing all the time! On defense I would blitz constantly and see if you can`t cause commotion in the backfield! I would not let their qtrback have all day to throw! I would hit him with blitzes from all over the field and certainly be looking for the turnover! EVERY scoring opportunity must be taken advantage of!!! That is exactly why OU lost to Florida last year! They were on the Florida 5 two times and didn`t get any points eventhough frankly I think they outplayed Florida!!!

How do you know that no one wants to play BSU? Does anyone have proof, or because school officials said so? Kind of lame to believe school officials. Give me the names of the schools that are afraid to play BSU. Until someone can provide the names and it can be confirmed, its just Bull.

I have lived in Boise since 1994 and watched Boise State continue to acheive huge strides. I get sick and tired of hearing all the BCS team lovers winning and crying and hiding behind strength of schedule. Boise State has offered to play at any teams stadium without having to play at ours, who else has done this "no one" and they still declined. All BCS teams know if they accept to play Boise State, TCU, Utah, BYU, or Fresno State that they have a good chance of losing that game and their season. That is why they run away. Do i believe we deserve a National Championship (no) but we have earned the right to be in the Fiesta or Sugar for the past two years and deserve the respect to be playing Cincy or Iowa. We have been the nations most winning team since 2000. I beleive if we win the Fiesta and Play Oregon State and Virgina Tech next year and go undefeated then we will have earned a National Championship shot at that time. I think some people on here should put there beer bottles down and take the time to research BSU history. They will go to a bigger conference in the near future most likely the mountain west and then who will be the best conference?

BSU I am not your coach but I have a game plan for you! The Tom Brady game plan-short , quick slants and curls all night long! With the occasional bomb, draw. sweep, reverse to keep this intersting! This will keep the TCU defensive front from sacking moore. I am sure they plan on putting heat on him so I would get rid of the ball quickly! Yes, I think if you play a game like this you could win! And the number one reason why is I think it is going to be very hard to run against that TCU defense! And I think you must take gambles on defense LIke a lot of corner blitzes and such, blitzing from all over the field! Good Luck!

I also think it`s bullchit that no big-time schools want to schedule BSU! Look, you pulled out a miracle beating OU, you lost to TCU, you lost ECU, S. Carolina whooped your azz, Georgia took you apart at the seams! You have never won a big one on the road, except for the "miracle" win! Until you win a couple of big ones on the road you will always be a mid-major! Right now is your huge chance to move up and prove you belong in the big leagues!!! In my opinion this is a must win for you now!!! And you must win decisively, no last sec heroics and such!!! If you blow this one it will set you back to the stone-age!!! Now is the time to prove!!!

Good luck in the upcoming game BSU!
I hope this one is as much of a classic as the last Fiesta Bowl you won!
Of course beating TCU 46 to 13 will keep the blogs going all off season.
    Yes... I called it.

    PS. good riddance Gators

Sorry BSU fans but consider yourself lucky you are in a BCS bowl. I don't hate BSU. Hey Alan S, wins over Oregon yes, but Nevada is weak. This is the WAC's 2nd place team and they get pounded by a bad Notre Dame team 35-0 and lose to Colorado St 3-9 last place in the Mountain West. Sorry the WAC is weak.

Don't listen to all of the haters, Boise State!! The Broncos have won 13 games including wins over Oregon and Nevada. It must be nice to be a fan of a BCS conference school. Anytime a school from outside the CARTEL does well, they just talk strength-of-schedule and about the rigors of playing BCS teams week in and week out. OK, but every conference has some dogs. And if you're so worried about our "Strength of Schedule", where's the invite from the PAC-10?

I'm a TCU fan, and I see the Frogs and Broncos in the same boat. Both of us are capable of beating anybody, but it's a losing battle to win the popularity contest that currently decides who plays for the NC every year. The Mountain West OWNED the PAC-10 last year, but they still got the precious Rose Bowl and we got the Poinsettia, which was a great game between two evenly-matched teams. I expect another great game this time around. It's the Underrated NC game, and a match-up of the two teams nobody wants to schedule home-and-home out of...yes, I'm going there...fear!
