INSIDE SLANT

Leading up to last Saturday’s game against lower-division UT-Chattanooga, Alabama coach Nick Saban had everyone around the team under strict orders not to talk about Auburn.

Once No. 3 Alabama (11-0) had effectively put away the Mocs 45-0, the conversation went almost immediately to the annual state obsession that is the Iron Bowl, the regular-season-ending clash against cross-state rival Auburn (7-4).

“It will be a challenging game for us in every way,” Saban said.

“It’s an important game for everybody that’s involved, in terms of our program here, that we do a good job of getting our players ready to play their best football. Our coaches will do whatever they need to do to get that done.”

Alabama travels to Auburn, where the Crimson Tide has not won in eight years. On the other hand, last year’s 36-0 victory in Tuscaloosa was one of the most lopsided in the series’ recent history.

“There’s not going to be any pressure,” said quarterback Greg McElroy, who will be making his first Iron Bowl start. “It’s just going to be the same old team that we played last year. It’s just another team. It can’t be made out to be anything more than that.

“Obviously, they’re a team that we face on a yearly basis, and it’s a team that we take a lot of pride in playing. They’re a very, very good football team. They really are.”

While Alabama was playing Saturday—albeit against a completely overmatched foe—Auburn was off, giving the Tigers a jump on preparing for the Tide.

And playing the game on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, shortens the Tide’s prep time even more.

“It wasn’t my idea (to move the game to Friday),” Saban said. “But that’s when it’s scheduled, so that’s when we’ll play.”

NOTES, QUOTES

• Senior NT Terrence Cody, occasionally used as a blocking fullback on goal line situations, continues to lobby coach Nick Saban to let him carry the football. Fans thought maybe Saturday’s game against Chattanooga would be it when Cody entered on a first-quarter offensive play at the 2-yard line. Instead, tailback Trent Richardson got the call, scoring the game’s first touchdown.

“I wanted to score and stuff,” Cody said. “But I didn’t have the chance. I tried to talk (Saban) into giving me the ball.”

Saban has joked that he would allow Cody to carry the ball if the big defensive lineman could beat him in a footrace at practice. Cody insists he has done that on multiple occasions.

“He hasn’t beat me yet,” Saban said during his weekly radio show. “Now he will argue the point, but I’m the commissioner. I determine who wins every race.”

• PR Javier Arenas returned a second-quarter punt 66 yards for a touchdown, the seventh of his Alabama career, breaking the SEC record held by former Kentucky return man Derek Abney. Arenas is just 103 yards shy of the NCAA’s all-time punt-return yardage record. “Yeah, I’m satisfied,” Arenas said. “Even if I didn’t have a touchdown, I’d still be satisfied. We won. We came out with the victory.”

• TB Mark Ingram is only 72 yards shy of Bobby Humphrey’s 1986 single-season rushing record. Humphrey had 1,471 yards, while Ingram’s 102 yards Saturday gave him 1,399 for the season.

• Senior PK Leigh Tiffin’s 41-yard field goal tied his own mark for most field goals in a season. Tiffin has made 25 field goals in 28 attempts this season; he was 25 of 34 in 2007.

Game Ball Goes To:   CB Javier Arenas—He set an SEC record with his seventh career punt return for a touchdown, and he added an interception in his final home game for the Tide.

Keep An Eye On:   LB Cory Reamer—The senior recorded his first career interception Saturday.

Quote To Note:   “I grew up hating Auburn. That’s just the way it is in this state. You like one team and you hate the other.”—Alabama PK Leigh Tiffin, whose father, Van, also kicked for the Tide.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Looking Good:   Nobody got hurt. Let’s be honest, next to winning the game against Chattanooga, that was the biggest accomplishment Saturday. With a quick 35-0 lead, the starters that Alabama so desperately needed to protect were safely off the field for much of the game.

Still Needs Work:   Nothing looked bad against UT-Chattanooga. But if there is a weakness, it remains kick coverage. Alabama will continue to try to find ways to keep opposing teams from getting better-than-average field position on kickoff returns.

Roster Report:

• Reserve TB Terry Grant remained out of Saturday’s action, marking the third consecutive week he has not participated. Grant has been dealing with an abdominal strain, according to coach Nick Saban. The injury has also not allowed Grant to practice recently, and he has not logged a carry since the Arkansas game in late September.

• CB Robert Lester, who has played sparingly in his two seasons at Alabama, appeared on the punt return team two games ago and has been added to the struggling kickoff coverage team. Lester repaid coaches’ faith with a tackle on Alabama’s second kickoff.

• Coach Nick Saban subbed out Alabama’s entire offensive line to start the second half. The second-string line consisted of Tyler Love (left tackle), John Michael Boswell (left guard), David Ross (center), Chance Warmack (right guard) and Alfred McCullough (right tackle).

• LB Dont’a Hightower is out for the season after undergoing knee surgery following an injury in the Arkansas game on Sept. 26.

• DE Damion Square is out for the season with a knee injury.

First, i'm an Alabama fan. I've saw a lot of comments that Bama will blow Auburn away again this year. As everyone knows the game is in Auburn , which means a 6 point field advantage to start. Second, Auburn will have 13 Days to prepare, rest, and heal. Bama has 5. Get out your nerve pills for the first half, because it's going to be closer than a lot of people think. I feel Maybe 17-10 Bama ,halftime. The end of the 3rd. 24-13, Bama. Games end, 34-20 Bama. Auburns not going to lay down and die in the last half as many think. They're going to play their best game of the season. I hope many of you are right and it is a blowout, but i don't think so. I think Auburn will play Bama a harder game than Florida will. Bama 28, Florida 17. An upset in either game is not impossible, so don't bet the farm, you might be sleeping under the McFarland overpass bridge come Friday night LOL.

Hello FL, LSU, AU, USC, and TN fans:

Tebow is depending more on his shuffle passes on heavy rushes. Now that this has been noticed, FL's two speedsters will be contained and poor Tebow will be left with another concussion or injury. The two shuffle pass speedstars will also be sidelined for the remaining season or bowl game.

Have the crutches and alcohol ready Auburn and Gators.

I am looking forward for Auburn to get Alabama ready by utilizing some of Florida's running plays.

Bama will win is what I say !! All they have to do is use their great defense to put more pressure on Tebow. Make tebow throw the ball in 3 seconds in stead of 4 seconds. Bama will use McClain, Arenas, and a couple more players to accomplish this. You can bet that the #1 coach in America(Saban) will figure something out !!

I concur sir! Every team does have those down cycles. So Bill N you are a LSU fan......that means Saban should be a God to you. I mean LSU was a mediocre team at best pre-Saban, a 9-4 season here and there but mostly 7-6 was the norm for LSU. Thats what I love about Alabama before this decade those down cycles lasted 2 years and then the other 8 years were top-10 finishes. Alabama is nothing but consistant when it comes to winning. I dont believe Saban will leave anytime soon, well atleast not until he wins a national championship for the TIDE, then all bets are off.

#147- I have a lot of relatives in Northwest Alabama, and I get tired of them digging Bear Bryant up and propping him next to the stadium every year. Now you think you have another Bear in Saban and the fanaticism continues. These people wear crimson underwear with a big A on them. Successful teams have cycles; Alabama has them, Florida has them, LSU has them, and all of the other teams. The first "down" season Saban has and loses to Auburn and a few other SEC teams, he will be gone just like he bailed out on LSU. It's money with him. Plus, if he gets creamed by Auburn, the fans will be calling for his head. Enjoy it while you can; my team (LSU) is going through that "down" cycle right now.
I just feel from watching both Alabama and Florida play in games this year that Florida has more team speed and consistency, especially at the WR and QB positions. Just my opinion; which is like buttholes, everybody has one and they all stink. We shall see Dec 5th.

I hope you understand what he meant by 'buy a game" meaning you have to pay big damn bucks to get a team to come in and play! If you look at that as meaning anything else, you obviously don't understand the article.

The comment about Alabama and Florida almost getting beat by non-ranked teams brings up a point. There are dangerous non-ranked teams in every conference, that can upset great teams "on any given day." Fans trying to make a point which favors their bias often use these upsets, or close games, to make their point that a ranked team like Bama or Florida is weak. I don't buy it. Not unless the non-ranked team truly sucks. Arkansas almost beat Florida, because Arkansas isn't really that bad. Tennessee almost beat Alabama, because Tennessee isn't really all that bad. Both these teams have had losses, and may play a little inconsistently, but they are both "dangerous" or potential spoilers for strong teams. Of course, Tennessee is also a bitter rivalry game which often adds another dimension to the game. These non-ranked, dangerous teams realize they have to play their best when facing a team like Florida or Alabama. They "get up" for the game. For the Longhorns, Texas Tech often plays this role, and it couldn't have been more evident last year. I guarantee you that any team which plays Texas Tech knows they are not to be taken for granted. They are good, but not great. A good team can beat a great team "on any given day." Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas are all teams which typically have to play Texas Tech, and will usually win ... but every once in a while Tech pulls it off, and more frequently, makes it a close game. Their offense is usually good, but their defense is inconsistent. On the games where their defense "shows up" to play ... watch out. A great team will have to earn that victory, but the margin of victory may be just a few key pivot points from vanishing.

Don't be so quick to assume that a close game for great teams to non-ranked opponents means they are weak. You're not giving enough credit to those non-ranked teams. These spoilers are in every conference, some more than others.

STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSES MOUTH " You’ve just got to buy a game if it comes down to it.,”said Alabama athletic director Mal Moore.,, This should explain BAMA,,,who better to admit it then the athelitic director huh???as for BILL,,,your an idiot,,,floridas is an outstanding team,,but this season has proven the SEC refs think FL & Bama are golden,,,i have sen most of the games and alomost everyone a call was missed or made up to help both teams,,and neither has blown away all the competition,,matter of fact they both almost got beat by a non ranked team,,thats where the " youve just got to buy a game when it comes down to it" applies.......................

Bill N- You must not not have been watching any games this season because you don't know what the hell your talking about. First of all lsu is not a medicore team their only two losses come from the number one and number two teams florida and alabama. Yes they had had promblems against msu and ga, but as you should have seen even even the top two teams have too. Yes alabama had a close call with tennesse, but you seem to have memory loss was it not the great florida gators that almost lost to arkansas. Didn't see you put that fact in your comments. You are so quick to rush and say that florida is going to win because of tebow. Thats funny cause all you hear about when it comes to florida is tebow. Florida Gators= the tebow show. Well lets look at some facts here!! Alabama has more than one star player on their team; Mark Ingram, javier arenas, rolando mcClain, terrance cody, julio jones.......the list goes on. As for the sec championship game we shall see who wins. You don't know who will win. I personally am for Alabama all the way!!! Roll Tide!! Thats not saying that they are gonna win cause unlike you i can't see into the future, but they have a damn good chance.

LSU was beaten, but not by large margins by either Florida or Alabama. Given the strength of these two teams, one could hardly conclude LSU is mediocre. LSU isn't hitting on all cylinders though.

I'm a Longhorn fan by the way. I think Alabama can take Florida this year, but by no means is that a certain thing. I'm looking forward to that match and a good opportunity to see how Alabama's run game stacks up against a strong rush defense.

Bill N- That supposedly below average LSU team almost beat Florida, a below average Miss St. team should have beat Florida, and a below average South Carolina team should have beat Florida. So why all the bias against the TIDE? Yes Florida has Tebow but every one of those games proved he can be rattled so why cant a Saban coached defense come into the SEC championship game and stop the Tebow led Gators? All I want from you is to admit that this years Bama team has a damn good chance to beat the Gators. And another thing Bama was physically pounding LSU all game....Bama was bigger and stronger so those late game injuries are apart of the game so dont go there with the Bama only won because of late game injuries! Bama won because they just whooped LSU plain and simple. Also, LSU has had like 7 consecutive top 5 recruiting classes in a row so LSU could possibly be one of the most talented teams in the nation so how are they below average? The only way I think they could be below average is that they are super young at QB and one of their QBs hasnt asserted himself yet. Let LSU's offense find some consistency in the passing game and they are a top 3 team....and I would not want a rematch between them and Bama if thats the case lol.
P.S.: Thanks for these chats Bill N they are fun and enlightening. Oh yeah you say you are not a Gator fan.....so which team are you a fan of?

fluffy- you talk about depth; Alabama was getting beat by a below-average LSU team before injuries took over. Tenn was a blocked field-goal from beating them and Tenn is terrible. I watched both games yesterday; the FLA game and the Alabama game. You know and I know; FLA is no Miss State.
BTW, I would not say that Florida's passing game is horrible. That's a bold statement. I'm not a Florida fan, but I'm pretty sure Tebow will step up again, just like last year.

    # 139 Bill N- Bank on it?!?!?!? Wow you are so confident and straight forward. I respect that. If there is a year that Florida can get beat its this year......their passing game is horrible and their offensive line gives up way too many sacks. So the top defense in the SEC sack-wise Alabama will get more than four and oh yeah they are not goin to be beating Bama by 24 when they give up that many sacks. IM NOT SAYING BAMA IS GOING TO WIN......Im just saying that Bama has a damn good chance so your bold prediction of "bank on it" like its guarranteed makes me laugh. And another thing, any true Bama fan would have known that last year was a miracle because of the lack of DEPTH. Proof, Bama is whoopin Florida until the last 11 minutes until Bama's D gets tired and they beat us by 11, and in the Utah game Bama was beat up and missing Andre Smith which proves that Bama lacked depth(before Utah fans go crazy.......Utah had depth so the better team won!). This years team HAS depth, which means that this Bama wont give up in the last 11 minutes and let Florida score 14 unanswered points. If Florida wins it will be because they fought hard and beat a damn good Bama team and I will be the first to come on here and give Florida props! So leave the bold matter-of-fact predictions for the douchebag analysts!
P.S.: Tebow(A HUGE BAMA FAN BY THE WAY) is gone after this year so no PERFECT QB for Urban's O anymore. I mean Urban Meyer's offense will never be this good again EVER! So the future looks bright for the TIDE! Especially with our #2 ranked recruiting class as of 11:50pm 11/14/2009!

Wow.....I like how people have been so envious of Alabama for all these years that they seem to forget the hundred years of football Bama played before 2000. I mean Bama has a winning record against everyone they have played except USC(Im guessing?). Another thing is Bama hasnt been as bad as some people are letting on in this decade.....I mean 4 seasons of 9 plus wins and 2 SEC West titles when a team is rebuilding is not bad. So please dont get mad that Bama is back and beating your team's asses and going to the big bowls again. Its not Bama's fault your team is going to the Independence Bowl again and we are going to BCS Bowls. Dont hate.....appreciate!!!
Thank you Im out lol :P
