Alabama Team Report

INSIDE SLANT

The seeds of Alabama’s national championship game appearance were planted right after last season.

“There was a time when we had a team meeting after the (2009) Sugar Bowl (a loss to Utah), right before we started the offseason program,” said Alabama coach Nick Saban.

“We kind of showed a picture to the players of the SEC Championship, and we said there are some great teams and we would have some difficult times, and we had to work to beat the best team in our league. … And everything you do, every time you go to work, every time we lift weights, every time you run, every time we practice, it’s not to be as good as the guy you’re playing against. It’s to be as good as the guy you have to beat to be the champion.

“Our players bought into that.”

So, it’s no surprise to Alabama that it is headed to Pasadena to play in the national championship game after dispatching the defending national champion Florida Gators 32-13 in the SEC title game.

It’s a powerhouse matchup: 13-0 Alabama vs. 13-0 Texas.

Everything—well, most everything—starts for both of these teams on defense.

Alabama ranks No. 2 and Texas No. 3 in total defense. The Longhorns are No. 1 and the Tide No. 2 in rushing defense. Alabama is No. 1 and Texas No. 8 in scoring defense … and on it goes, right down the line, where statistically these are two of the best defenses in the country.

Offensively, however, they are very different.

Texas, behind quarterback Colt McCoy, is 14th in passing and 55th in rushing, while Alabama is 12th in rushing and 84th in passing.

To get here, Alabama had to win close games, blocking a last-second field goal try by Tennessee to preserve a 12-10 victory and driving the length of the field for a touchdown on the final possession to beat Auburn. But the Tide capped the season with a dominating victory over Florida in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome to win the school’s 22nd SEC title.

The chance to win championships is “a big reason why a lot of people come here,” said Tide quarterback Greg McElroy, a Texan from Dallas whose hero is Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo.

“Our fullback, Baron Huber, said it best when he said, ‘If you could write a page in history, what would you want it to say?’”

Alabama has a chance to write some history with the school’s recognized 13th national championship in January.

NOTES, QUOTES

• The Southeastern Conference will be represented in the BCS title game for the fourth consecutive year. The league’s representative won the three previous games (Florida 2006, LSU 2007, Florida 2008).

• Can anybody match Mal Moore’s collection of national titles? The Alabama athletic director has been a part of seven national championship teams—one as a back-up quarterback at Alabama, five as an assistant on Paul “Bear” Bryant’s Alabama staff, and the last one as an assistant on Alabama’s 1992 team coached by Gene Stallings.

“I knew Coach (Saban) was the man for the job,” Moore said of his decision to go all out in pursuit of Nick Saban after the 2006 season. “He was a proven coach and had won championships, and he has an opportunity to do it again.”

But did Moore really think Saban could do it in just three years at Alabama?

“No,” Moore said, smiling. “This has happened faster. Much faster.”

• Alabama has won an SEC championship in every decade since the league was formed in 1933.

Scouting The Offense:   Alabama is showing more balance, with QB Greg McElroy spreading the ball around to WR Julio Jones, WR Marquis Maze, TE Colin Peek and TB Mark Ingram. But what the Tide really likes to do is just pound opposing defenses with the run (215.8 yards per game) and play ball control (SEC-leading 33 minutes average time of possession). Often, Alabama will throw early to soften defenses, then come with the bruising Ingram and freshman Trent Richardson. The Tide offense just seems to get stronger as the game goes on, dominating fourth quarters this year with a 109-24 scoring advantage.

Scouting The Defense:   The Tide has one of the best linebackers in the game in Rolando McClain and one of the most intrigue nose tackles in 365-pound Terrence Cody. The defense uses an NFL-style philosophy of trying to take advantage of personnel mismatches. The Tide can be multiple in formations without changing personnel, and has done a very good job of disguising coverages and matching opposing offenses shift for shift before the snap of the ball.

Matchup To Watch:   Texas QB Colt McCoy vs. Alabama LB Rolando McClain—McCoy will be responsible for reading the Alabama defense and making adjustments to what he sees. McClain is responsible for reading the Texas offense and making adjustments for what he sees. Both are capable of changing calls multiple times at the line of scrimmage in an intricate guessing game, and both are physical enough to back up whatever they call with pure ability.

Quote To Note:   “I think that a lot in life comes down to expectations sometimes, and we didn’t come here looking for a moral victory.”—Alabama coach Nick Saban, after a 32-13 victory over defending national champion Florida in the SEC Championship Game.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL

Bowl Breakdown:   Alabama vs. Texas, BCS Championship Game, Jan. 7, Pasadena, Calif.—The Crimson Tide will be going for its 13th recognized national championship. However, the Tide is 0-7-1 all-time against the Longhorns. The team last met on Jan 1. 1982, when Texas scored twice in the fourth quarter to beat Alabama, 14-12, in the Cotton Bowl. Five of the eight meetings have come in bowl games.

Players To Watch:

TB Mark Ingram—He’s the SEC’s second leading rusher (118.6 ypg) who rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns in the SEC Championship Game against Florida, adding 76 yards on two receptions.

QB Greg McElroy—The surprise MVP of the SEC Championship Game (12 of 18 passing, 239 yards, one touchdown), McElroy has not lost a game as a starting quarterback in college (13-0) or high school (16-0).

LB Rolando McClain—He is the heart of the Alabama defense, calling signals as well as leading the team with 101 tackles, 12.5 behind the line of scrimmage.

CB/KR Javier Arenas—He is the SEC career leader in punt return yards and touchdowns, and his fourth-quarter interception of Tim Tebow in the end zone effectively shut down the Gators’ hope of a comeback in the SEC title game.

Roster Report:

• LB Dont’a Hightower is out for the season after undergoing knee surgery following an injury in the Arkansas game.

• DE Damion Square is out for the season with a knee injury.

• Reserve RB Terry Grant was limited almost the entire season with an abdominal strain.

The trend is for coaches to leave an leave teams high an dry it is the nature of the game. Saban will have his run an then some team will throw big money and he's gone.

Steve it's "William" and in your post to David the word "allow"should have been spelled "allowed" in the fifty states, when you attempt to make someone or some region appear as to be collectively ignorant or illiterate at least don't embarrass yourself by using bad second grade grammar skills. By the way I am not from Alabama, however I follow many college football teams and Alabama is one of my favorite teams along with the Oregon ducks and Penn State. So you seem angry at the state of Alabama, although I'm not sure what the correlation is with the college football national championship. Were you a child of an abusive redneck Father or Mother, your demeanor and mannerisms indicates that perhaps that is the case.

Wow the comments here are really just prime examples of sour grapes and sore losers. One thing to be learned from this championship game is never, never put all your eggs into one basket i.e. if you believe Texas would have won if Colt McCoy would not have been injured. All the what ifs, might haves, could haves, don't stand the test of time, neither does it ever win any team a national championship. If you really have the astute ability to honestly analyze the game with any intellectual honesty left intact ,you would first reach the conclusion that the first three points scored by Texas was a result of an egregiously thought out attempted trick play called by Saban on fourth down and deep in their own territory, that should have been a given touch down for Texas.

Be realistic here, Texas had the ball with a first down at the Alabama one yard line and in three plays couldn't punch it in for the score, Texas had to settle for a field goal. The next three points came as a result of an on-side kick recovered (again another turnover), and out of both turnovers Texas couldn't score but two field goals. Texas had the ball on the Alabama thirty yard line with a first down after the on-side kick recovery and still for the second time couldn't capitalize on Alabama's mistakes. At that point Texas should have been 14 points ahead of Alabama.

Also if Texas has such a superior defense, why did it allow Alabama to score twenty-four points on them in the second quarter? Usually when the premise of an argument breaks down due to a lack of substance that's when
ad Hominem takes over (e.g., Saban is Satan, you don't deserve it, you are all a group of uncouth rednecks). I am just curious, what did Texas ever plan to do just in case Colt McCoy was ever injured, whine for the remainder of the season that every game just isn't fair? Obviation goes a long way, never put all your eggs into one basket. Kudos to Garrett Gilbert he hung in there and almost did it. Roll Tide !

I want to congradulate the PLAYERS of Alabama. You played well. We lost the game in the 2nd QTR by not being able to stop the run.

However, I think your coaching staff are AZZHOLES. they ran up the score and I always knew Sabin was an arrogant azz.

I feel that if Colt had not been knocked out of the game, and realize thats part of the game, Texas would have won. We almost won with a True freshman that far out played your QB.

So, don't go bragging too much.

I know you low life bama fans think you beat Texas last night....However, you beat Texas without their starting quarterback.....You may have gotten it done anyway (doubtful) but, we can't rewrite history to find out....Here is what we know for sure; you beat the mighty florida alligators by 19 pts. with their starting 1st string in but, you could only beat Texas by 16 pts. with their back-up quarterback in....Therefore, it's not a cinch that you could have beaten the Longhorns had Colt McCoy not gotten hurt. The record book and the final score says you got the win but, you will forever have huge ******** by the results. I'M GLAD THAT I'M A TEXAN AND I'M GLAD THAT I AM FREE - BUT TODAY, I WISH I WAS A DOGGIE AND alabama WAS A TREE!!!!!.....BUBBA

lol right will I lived in the hole called alabama and that program is under investigation all the time. they have to cheat to win anything in that state. maybe alabama will slide off into the gulf of Mexico with all hands on board and do the rest of the nation a favor. i have never been to a more backwards place in the world, and i have been all over the world.

As a Spartan fan, all I remember of Saban is how he left the program high and dry for greener pastures at LSU right before a major bowl game. Of course he did the same thing to LSU once an opportunity fo advance his career presented himself. It will be interesting to see what happens at Alabama.

Congratulations on a great season, and a great victory. It is well deserved. Best of Luck to Colt McCoy. I hope he has a speedy recovery. I think that Gilbert will be a great QB in the future my the Longhorns.
If I had to choose who I would loose to, It would be a great team such as Alabama.
Who knows, possibly next year, we can do it again. Possibly have a different outcome?
    Gilbert looks pretty good.

ozzy- there's different levels of probation: loss of scholarships, banned from bowl games; warnings; etc.....bama is just on probation that will result in bigger problems if they do something wrong while they're still on probation...this is for another year or so and then they're off probation...
