News Flash: Cards can Kragthorpe
Louisville fired coach Steve Kragthorpe on Saturday.
Kragthorpe compiled a 15-21 record in three seasons at Louisville with no bowl appearances. His best season was his first, when Kragthorpe went 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the Big East.
Kragthorpe, 44, has a 44-43 record as a head coach, including a four-year stint at Tulsa when he went 17-9.
Early targets to replace him include Houston coach Kevin Sumlin, Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, ex-Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer and Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong.
Reports: Porter to lead Memphis
LSU running backs coach Larry Porter will be the next Memphis coach, according to published reports.
Porter, who also was LSU’s assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator, played running back at Memphis from 1990-93. He replaces Tommy West, who was fired after nine seasons following a 2-10 mark.
Washington Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray was thought to be in position to take the post, but Memphis opted to alter its search.
Akron coach out
Akron fired coach J.D. Brookhart.
Brookhart had a six-year record of 30-42 at Akron, going 22-26 in MAC games. He was the 2004 MAC Coach of the Year. In 2005, the Zips won the MAC East Division title and the program&’s only MAC Championship. In 2006, Akron defeated North Carolina State for the program’s first win over a BCS program.
