News Flash: Bowden’s status unresolved

A meeting Tuesday night between Florida State president T.K. Wetherell and university boosters failed to produce any substantive information on the future of Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden, according to Warchant.com

Earlier in the day, there was speculation that the meeting would be a fund-raiser to put together a retirement package for Bowden. Instead, Wetherell answered questions and shared information about the situation.

Warchant.com reported that the school could hold a news conference or issue a statement Wednesday. But there’s a chance the situation could drag on with no resolution until the end of the season.

UNLV coach under fire

UNLV coach Mike Sanford could be in trouble.

After the Rebels yielded 773 yards in losing to rival Nevada, 63-28, last week, UNLV President Neal Smatresk said Sanford’s future could be determined during the season.

“The game was very disappointing,” Smatresk told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “We are concerned for our student-athletes, we are concerned for our fans, and we’ll be keeping an eye on the situation on a game-to-game basis to see how things go. We’re going to be watching.”

Sanford makes $425,000 per season. If he is fired before Dec. 4, he would be paid a buyout of $287,500. Sanford signed a three-year extension last year, pushing his contract through the 2012 season.

Sanford is in his fifth season, with a 13-39 record and no bowl appearances. Last year, he posted his best record, leading the Rebels to a 5-7 mark. UNLV is 2-3 this year with a game against BYU on Saturday.

Potts on shelf?

Texas Tech may be without junior quarterback Taylor Potts when the Red Raiders play host to Kansas State on Saturday.

Potts suffered a concussion in last week’s win over New Mexico. He didn’t practice yesterday. Potts has completed 159 of 235 passes for 1,817 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions for Texas Tech (3-2).

Steven Sheffield took all the reps with the first team. The plan is for Sheffield to make his first career start this week with Potts returning for the game at Nebraska on Oct. 17.

Sheffield is a 6-4, 175-pound junior who has completed 20 of 29 passes for 290 yards with four touchdowns and one interception this season.
