Porter one of two finalists
LSU running backs coach Larry Porter is one of two finalists for the Memphis head football job, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Porter and Washington Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray are the two finalists. The new coach, who will replace the fired Tommy West, may be named later this week.
Porter is a former Memphis running back, who is sixth on the school’s all-time rushing list. Porter did not comment about the Memphis job after LSU’s game against Ole Miss on Saturday.
Gray just entered the running for the Memphis position. His connection to the job is his relationship with Fred Smith, the founder of FedEx and a part owner of the Redskins.
Smith is a prominent Memphis booster. In addition, Smith’s son is a quarterback who is sitting out this year with the Tigers after transferring from Miami.
