Pack gets good start and lead 7-0
NC State hosted Maryland in what was a crucial ACC showdown for both teams. The winner keeps its slim hopes of a bowl bid alive, while the loser has no chance of being bowl eligible.
Kickoff was at 1 p.m., in front of a late arriving crowd at Carter-Finley Stadium, and right away NC State struck for an early lead. Defensive end Willie Young picked off Maryland’s Chris Turner on the first play of the game and returned it to the Maryland 21. After a 4-yard run by Toney Baker, quarterback Russell Wilson hit tight end George Bryan for a 17-yard touchdown and 7-0 Wolfpack lead with 14:08 to go int he first quarter.
