Commentary: A lesson in winning

  • Print

Eugene, Ore.- Somewhere and somehow during USC’s disastrous blowout loss to Oregon, I felt like I understood LeGarrette Blount a little more.

I thought a fan was going to get clocked, and after what went down at Autzen Stadium Saturday after Oregon’s 47-20 win, it’s a surprise you don’t see it more.

Not only did a swarm of fans take over the football field, but some took it upon themselves to throw a little salt in USC’s wounds. There were some sarcastic words of encouragement, and there was physical contact as Trojan players walked off the field.

“It’s tough. This just sucks; it just sucks,” Malik Jackson said. “You want to hit somebody- you do. But, you can’t. I think we all know that Coach (Pete Carroll) would find out. You know someone would see it, and it would reflect poorly on you, your team and USC.”

Jackson was among the USC players last into the locker room, as he slowly walked off the field while the Ducks’ fans continued to party.

“After the game, I was very upset,” Jackson said. “I watched the fans all run on the field. I saw how excited they were, and I thought that could be us.”

And while he was at his lowest, an Oregon fan touched him on his chest and sarcastically thanked him for coming to town, using much cruder language of course. It’s that moment that makes me afraid in that setting.

Jackson could have punched that fan, and you could make a fairly easy argument that he deserved it. He could’ve let out his frustration on that smug face, and it may have been justifiable.

But, thankfully, Jackson showed maturity and poise in that moment, and continued to walk off the field.

There are a lot of lessons the USC players can learn from this 27-point loss, lessons that will be dissected and pointed out in film study over the next few days. But as fans of any team, there’s a lesson here for us. It’s about winning and respecting your opponent.

I don’t want this to sound like some spoiled USC fan is complaining, and I’m not saying all USC fans handle victory with class. No, I speak to all fans everywhere, fans of every team. After winning like Oregon did, it’s fine for there to be an explosion of joy. Go celebrate with your friends and your players.

Most Oregon fans did that.

But, don’t be the guy standing by the USC locker room, hiding behind a Halloween costume, spewing obscenities and mean words towards the team that just lost. They’re more than anonymous numbers on uniforms. They’re people. And, they’re young.

If fans continue to poke and prod at emotionally wounded players, like it happened last night, college football is in for some serious trouble. Something bad will happen, just like it did with Blount.

Luckily for USC fans, that disaster didn’t happen Saturday night thanks to maturity and restraint.

It might seem hokey to call for sportsmanship, and I’m not. I’m calling for decency. The losing players all know what just happened on the field. There’s no need to remind them.

Show your friends — and the nation — you know your college football. Sign up to play College Bowl Pick'em!

At... Ohio St. ND, Cal, Oregon, I mean for a YOUNG team that lost the entire defense, a 10-2 season will not be bad! To go on the road and beat at the time 3 out of 4 ranked teams shows poise and much promise for the future. Next year, a more seasoned team will be on the field, and it will be business as usual ie another run of 6-7 Pac 10 Championships in a row!!

Keep the fans off the field..... they didn't play...Most never played and they didn't help anyone win. It makes me puke to hear fans say "WE WON THAT ONE." Who is we? I didn't see you out there....Get a life...One of my favorite coaches always said " Our fans are with us, win or draw." Stay off the field ...

Post #4 and #11 GERELL M on what justifys you to call Coach Carrol a looser? R.U.F.K me! All Coach Carrol has done since he's been here is return SC to prominence that the other Pac 10 teams are striving for! You seem to have all the answers for coaching and what it takes. Apply for the position or better yet try and resurect the CSUN (Northridge) , CSUF (Fullerton), or CSULB (Long Beach) football programs out here. Hell I'll even come and support your time if you get UC-Riverside going since I live in the I.E! Aint nobody making excuses for SC! They sure as heck delt plenty of ass whippings and now they, to our dismay got one themselves! You also said SC didnt play to there potential and Oregon played WELL? Hello Sunshine! you think the Ducks had something to do with that! Oregon played one whale of a game and I give them all the props they deserved. they soudly defeated the than #4 ranked team in the nation and whats scary is it could've been much worse! Coach Gerell I would think that you being one of the nations up n coming coaches in SEC landcould give a lil props to the universities in Eugene, Corvallis or Seattle! See the big picture out here is the only football teams, other than themselves, that can take SC down is a Pac 10 team! Didn't foget you Texas from 05) If your lil precious SEC is so mighty than come out to Autzen or Reaser Stadium or the Coliseum and play ball! ASU made it out to Georgia and UCLA to Tenn this year. Alabama is the only true SEC power who has carried that banner for more than a century and I admire there history and program.Your BCS crowns exactly that B.S ! and are ALL tarnished because your teams didn't play the elite program of this decade and setled for the sorry Big 10. Props to Texas at least theres is legit. Don't hate SC for who they are. Even in a rebuilding year Uncle Pete has his program competing and still ranked high and Im not even gonna acknowledge post #23 n #27 for there incompetance. Congrats again to Oregon and hopefully they carry the Pac 10 banner and do well in a BCS bowl and that maybe SC can sneak into one as well and upset one of those top tier programs to make ammends!GO SC Fight On!!!

The article that Mr Woike wrote was very open and honest and covered mostly from an athletes point of view on what is being felt by the player and maybe there mind set after a tough game and I commend ALL College Football players for maintaining there sportsmanship, discipline and not to react in wanting to clock "the overzealous fan"! Fans too need to be held accountable for there actions! Just cause fans jump onto the playing field doesnt give them the right to approach a player and spit, shove, and shout obscenities at them. Ask your self this questions? Are you gonna allow any person to talk smack about your mom, sister or the institution that you represent? F*#k no I"m gonna want to clobber that SOB into the turf and see that this individual will think twice about the next time they want to approach a player! It sucks what that Oregon RB did but you look at the film and all the profanity tirades the fans stirred up, to include the one where you can read his lips said, and it isn't about inviting LaBlount over for a couple beers in Boise after the game! I too am suprised that there hasn't been more incidents involving crazy fans but I sense that there is a build up coming! Look at the NBA game years back or the father/son act on that Kansas City Royals 1st base coach! I am a diehard Chi Bears fan who dislikes Minn and Green Bay more than anything in the world, and I'll boo the heck out of Jared Allen or any Packer player! But Im not gonna be stupid and run up to them after the game and get in their grill and say "F" them, there mother, misses etc!!!!!! I was man enough to say it and I should be man enough to take the a$$ whippin thats coming. I just feel fans should save there chants in the stands and not "on their" playing field.

okay, first off, congrats to oregon, you guys are a better team and had a much better game than sc had. every team has it's off days, sc seamed to have two this year, and the two cost them big time; oregon had one, the first week, and bounced right back. being a die hard usc fan it was tough having my best friend rub it in my face but oh well. (his brother kicks for oregon). it was a horrible game to watch but wait till next year, we'll bounce back! fight on!

Pete's pro-style offense only works so well when all the key players are healthy and playing. Oregon did play well but if our TE McFoy, WR Ausberry and RB Stefan Johnson were there, it might have been a different outcome. The season is not over yet. Two years ago, Oregon went downhill right after defeating us. History may yet repeat itself.

I am a native Oregonian. I grew up in Eugene, went to Grad. school at UCLA and remember the days when Oregon and Oregon State played in the Toilet Bowl (the worst game in sports history). This being said, it saddens me that fans would want to rub salt into the wounds of 19 year old athletes -- most of whom are not going to make it to the NFL. Take the victory with dignity and walk off proudly that we badly beat one of the best teams in the country. Instead of taunting the USC players, celebrate that we could have probably soundly beaten every team in country -- including Florida and Alabama and Texas and perhaps even the Detroit Lions this Saturday night -- we were that good. Shake hands with USC and say "better luck next week with Arizona State" and move on. That is class. Not this immature hounding of the opposition. And yes. Perhaps there should be a rule in college football that says that no fan be allowed on the field until the opposing team and the refs get off the field. For some reason, I though this was true but alas it wasn't. Bad sportsmanship by Boise St. fans got Blunt's career destroyed and it doesn't have to happen. This is my two cents.

Post 4. Are you kidding me? SC will return and they will beat Oregon in the future. Some of you posters are living in Oz. Oregon is a great team and I have little doubt that if they played Boise again, that they would beat them (they have gotten better, Boise State had a tough time with Tulsa).

If you truly believe that any Big Ten school or Big East school could beat USC, you have been smoking or taking illegal drugs.

And post 1 are you related to Mustain?, he couldn't beat out Aaron Corp, let alone Barkley. Matt will grow and learn from this game and come back better in the future. Barkley is after all a true freshmen.

What person did a USC player punch out......NONE, please don't speak to be about sportsmanship, you show me a good loser and I'll show you a loser!

I have always been a USC fan and was having a hard time deciding whom to root for (moving to Oregon next year). I figured USC is out of national contention and Oregon will go to the Rose Bowl if they win. GO DUCKS was my decision. When Oregon came out firing from the beginning and didn't let up for the whole game it showed how much character they have. I am reminded that USC does not do that. They never put out for the whole game. Why? Is it coaching or are the players just so arrogant? They have the players every year and need to look into their soul.

USC should be at the bottom of the AP not close to the top of it, keep the payoffs rolling in someone is making money off these loosers. There are alot better teams with better records that are more deserving of the ranking than USC

I'm a duck fan and i agree with the author. Unfortunetly, the mob mentality exists and some fans behave bacly. But i have to say, USC fans who came to Eugene didn't behave very well either. Their "WE ARE BETTER THAN YOU ATTITUDE" doesn't fly well. They are rude, snobish and not pleasant at all. So, let's all remember this is just a football game.

WHY IS IT DUCK FANS HATE TAYLOR MAYS SO MUCH? watching the game on tv 3 states away i heard the fans saying all sorts of disrespectful things. talking about his mom sister cursing him i mean loud enough that i can hear it over the espn guys. hes an ALL American who looks to be that hard hitting safety in the NFL that fans miss seeing since the days of Lynch, Dawkins, and Hall of Fame Safety RONNIE LOTT.

this is directed to James and any haters like you. i am a die hard USC fan & ALUM . we had a bad game every team has a couple. but i still believe deep down we are NOT the best team in the country Right at this moment but we are in the top 3 we could have a game between USC and any on of the 3 top teams and it would be a game worth watching.we would be extremely respected to the fullest extent. no coach has done what pete has done in his tenure as Head Coach. we have some good kids playing there All Americans and future all americans and nfl players can you. no other teams can boast the star NFL players USC has prepared for the NFL. and we havent won it all in a couple of years but i will tell you this we are not giving up on the season. and watch out for next year. there will be no excuses from this fan screw injuries BCS computers i love my team and believe we compete and i will go on the record saying "WE ARE THE BEST TEAM STILL! IN THE PAC 10.

The writer addresses a real concern, and that is the safety of the officials, coaches and players of the opposing team. Even the home team players should be concerned. There should be no room for the fans taunting the other team and having physical access to the players of the other team. While most fans are good about how they conduct themselves, there are always a few idiots who don't have a life and do stupid things. You can not expect the players not to feel physically threatened when the fans rush the field. But the NCAA and the Universities will stay busy counting the millions of dollars. I will take a player getting seriously injured or killed before they tighten up security. I have been going to games for 35 years and have had a great time with out feeling the need to run onto the field. Maybe for once we can be pro-active and do the right thing. Fans belong in the stands not on the field.

USC fans where are you? No more blasts about non-conference schedules for Bama, Florida, and Texas. No more rants about national championships, east coast bias, or referees in other conferences. You played Notre Dame--about 50 other teams could beat them. You played Ohio State--everyone feasts on the Big 10 in big games. Wow---where is the trash talking today. Simply put you got beat by a MUCH better team---period!

This whole thing needs to be put into perspective. Most of these comments sound as if this game is the most important event ever to have happened in the history of the world and it is not. It was simply an athletic contest between the 2 schools. Oregon won and they deserved to do so because they simply performed better. Where is the sportsmanship from the fans and the respect for the opponents? Let's have a little class on both sides.

From a Duck fan's perspective, the Trojans played uninspired defense and predictable offense. Oregon's defense wasn't great, but good enough.
I kept expecting Taylor Mays to take somebody's head off. It never happened. Only one "big" hit stands out. Most of the night, he looked like he was bored standing in the defensive backfield.
As far as the rude fans, they are the exception NOT the rule. There are always some idiots out there, but I honsetly thought that most of them were Beaver fans. LOL.
If you want to be treated like crap, visit Parker Stadium one time. I will never go back.

Yeah! Finally USC has been exposed! They're a weak team playing in a weak conference. Except of course, for Oregon. You sissy boy girlie boys of Troy, got your ass spanked finally by a good team. I'm not a Duck fan, but I'm glad they beat the sword out of your hand and revealled finally your armour is foil thin. With all that money, with all that recruiting, with all the fake cheerleader implants, you sissy boy girlies of Troy, couldn't beat Oregon Elementary. Go home USC, go home to your rich mommies and daddies and cry and mabey you'll get lucky and get an easy opponent in a bowl game: like the Sham-Wow! bowl. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! And F Will Ferrel! Can you read? Yes, Pete Carroll is a loser. USC football is the winner. Not Petie.
I'm sure even someone like you that can't even read could coach a team like that to an 88-16 record. If Petie had stayed home the Trojans would have had a much better chance to win. He's a joke.
Try again to read the note. Or, better yet, get someone to read it to you.

Unfortunately this was a bad game for the rebuilding trojans. Trojans take defeat just as well as winning. Oregon was the better team yesterday, and there's no complaining or wallowing over it. However, here's a thought to all USC haters out there: Both the offense and the defense are still pretty young this year, next year they'll come back hungrier than ever and they have most of their tough games at home (with the exception of maybe Corvalis). Count of seeing a much improved USC team next year.
