SMU offers 2011 running back
It’s taken a little over two years for SMU head coach June Jones and his staff to get on pace with where they want to be recruiting-wise. Now, it seems that the Mustangs are completely caught up and are offering top prospects at a very timely pace.
In an attempt to pick up some of the best talent within the state of Texas, it’s important for SMU to be one of the first in the mix. That’s one of the big reasons why they recently offered Pflugerville Hendrickson junior running back Kenny Williams.
“I just got an offer from SMU last week,” said Williams. “That’s exciting. I just had a blank look on my face. I was excited about it but didn’t have any words to say. It was real surprising to me.”
Hearing from schools all over the country, including Baylor, Florida State, Minnesota, UCLA, Texas, Texas Tech and Notre Dame, Williams was somewhat relieved to get his first offer.
“It takes some of the stress off me. I’ve been working hard and have been trying to get some early offers and expand my options.”
The 5-foot-10, 206-pounder also did a good job of letting SMU know that he was interested in the Conference USA program. He and his family took a trip out to Dallas earlier in the summer.
“The visit was really nice. They showed me around campus and I talked to the dean of engineer because that’s something that I want to do other than football. It was really nice. I liked the facilities and everything.”
With the Mustangs on the offer board first, they won’t be the last, especially with the way that Williams is playing. After tallying 1,340 yards and 18 touchdowns on 118 carries through seven games, the 2011 standout is set to take his team into Marble Falls this weekend with an undefeated 3-0 conference record (5-1 overall).
“Even though I’m a junior, they still look up to me but it’s just about me and my team working together. Without the team, I wouldn’t be as successful as I am. It’s just something that coincides with each other.”
Williams has seen games at Texas A&M and Texas so far this season. He hopes to get back to SMU soon to watch the Mustangs in action as well.
