At 6-5, Weis would have hard time arguing firing

  • Print

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—Charlie Weis wouldn’t blame Notre Dame for firing him.

“If they decide to make a change, I’d have to say I’d have a tough time arguing with that. If they decide to make a change, I’d have a tough time arguing that because 6-5 is not good enough,” the Fighting Irish coach said Sunday. “Especially when you’ve lost five games by a touchdown or less and several three-point games that went right down to the wire.

“My intent is to be here. But if that were the rationale, I mean it would be tough for me to argue with that point,” he said.

Notre Dame lost its third straight game and fell to 6-5 on Saturday with a 33-30 loss in double overtime to Connecticut on senior day in South Bend.

He made the comments after being asked about his quote when he was hired five years ago after Tyrone Willingham was fired with a 6-5 record.

At the time, Weis said: “You are what you are, folks, and right now you’re a 6-5 football team. And guess what? That’s just not good enough. That’s not good enough for you, and it’s certainly not going to be good enough for me.”

Weis’ 35-26 record gives him a .573 winning percentage. That’s worse than the .583 winning percentage that got Notre Dame’s two previous coaches, Willingham and Bob Davie, fired.

Weis declined to answer most questions about how the Irish have done in his five years, saying he’s too busy getting ready for Stanford (7-4) to think about that. He said he’ll answer those questions in the future.

“I’m going to need significant time to get to that point,” he said.

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said again Sunday, after Weis spoke, that he will decide on Weis’ future after Saturday’s game at Stanford, saying nothing Weis said had changed that.

“It’s still status quo. That’s not to say something couldn’t happen, but I don’t foresee it,” he said.

When asked to characterize his relationship with Swarbrick, who was hired in July 2008, Weis said it has been “fair and cordial the whole time we’ve worked together.”

Weis, who has a contract that runs through the 2015 season, said he couldn’t envision any scenario where he would resign.

“No, that’s not happening,” he said.

Weis conceded that he’s responsible for any shortcomings of the program.

“Who else is responsible? Now, I could sit there and try to blame everybody else, but ultimately, it falls on my shoulders,” he said.

Weis was generally in an affable mood Sunday. A reporter was talking about his tie when Weis came in and Weis quipped: “a Kmart special.” When asked if he was gong to be the whipping boy on Sunday, Weis joked: “Welcome to my world.”

He also pretended to be ignorant when first asked about his 6-5 quote from five years ago, saying: “I might have short-term memory here, if you’re going to reminisce at this point.”

He did get terse when a reporter asked whether coaches or players were to blame for the team’s poor defensive play, an area where the Irish have struggled since Weis arrived.

“Do you really expect me to come up and throw people under the bus. Is that what you think?” he said.

Irish players said after being the game they were at a loss to explain how they’ve gone from being a team with Bowl Championship Series aspirations and two players, Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate, being talked about as potential Heisman candidates, to losing three straight.

“You kind of step back and look at it all and you don’t think this is where we should be. But it is,” linebacker Harrison Smith said. “We can’t change anything now.”

The Irish players say they support Weis. The captains stood beside Weis as they led the team out of the tunnel Saturday with their arms linked in a show of support.

Tate said he wants Weis back because they have such a good relationship on and off the field, saying he wouldn’t be the receiver he is without Weis.

“But it’s not up to me,” Tate said.

Swarbrick said he couldn’t speculate on whether Notre Dame will go to a bowl until he knows the team’s final record and what bowls are available.

“There’s a myriad of factors,” he said.

Swarbrick said what players want to do “will play a big role in our decision.”

Joshua M in post 303 you end by saying that the irish will clean up on recruiting???? Dude SERIOUSLY, the irish recruiting classes are ALWAYS in the top ten if not top 10, the problem is not recruiting, it's the coaching....

    P.S.

The tradition I keep reading about is only in South Bend. Remember every program out there has it's own tradition and Notra Shame doesn't own the market on tradition.

Hitler was a genuis in his own mind.

College football has changed so much since the hay days of the Farting Irish. The other teams in real conferences have better recruting now and that is just part of why the Shamers won't reach those back to the glory day times again. When in their glory days thay had tv exposure the other teams couldn't get and that was a big draw for better quality players then and not now. Thank god for ESPN, I can finally watch an SEC game up here in Big 10 country or a good Pac 10 game. What would the Farting Irish have without a tv contract? They would be out of sight and out of mind. I thought Clemson fans in Carolina were bad but the Farting Irish fans top them any day. And when they can't win they refer back to a time that was a decade ago of how great they "WERE". The Shamers will never get the respect they want till they join a real conference and earn a way to a bowl game instean of having it laid at their feet with a winning season of a watered down schedule. How many ranked teams do the atcually play each year? How many of those have they won in the last decade? To the Shamers out there forget the past as you have as many loses in the past as you have wins so get over it. After further review on the replays the Irish still lost. That is locked in the history book as is the days of a winning program. You want respect? Earn it and quit harping on the good ole days.

All I know is I love ND Football and I would love to see a bowl game no matter what all the haters say I dont understand why all the haters just wanna jump on here and bash a football tradition rich program that alot of people like. The only thing I can think is that all the haters are just scared that ND will be great again (one of these years) and start cleaning up on recruiting all the big names and will leave their team out in the cold!

You know...no college program can expect to be on top all of the time. Losing helps you appreciate the victories when they come. It amazes me when people arrogantly claim a victory when they see they see the schedule. Remember..." THAT'S WHY THEY PLAY THE GAME " !!! Other players and teams have dreams, goals and traditions too. Many schools have beautiful campues, indoor practice facilities and stadiums. That is why having recruits visit the campus is so important. All of you who have been mentioing academic standards should know that getting a college degree PERIOD is the most important thing. There are plenty of people who have had reality make a difference in their lives. Me,for instance. I graduated from Kent State University in 1972 after going there on a football scholarship. At a time when we have American men and women in a two front war (many who are college football fans) we should be THANKFUL with the fact that we've been BLESSED with the opportunity to relax and share the excitement of COLLEGE FOOTBALL with crowds of fans from both sides for one more Saturday.

let me break it down for you ..... since youre too stupid to follow basic English ......

i have always referred to Notre Dame as the most prestigious program in college football ...... MEANING ..... in the history of college football, looking at the whole picture, Notre Dame is the most prestigious program in college football. from the beginning of college football until today .... looking at the WHOLE body of work, no program matches Notre Dame .... not one.

most people are too stupid to grasp that ..... MEANING .... people such as yourself do not have the intelligent to understand the entire history of college football

they just look at wins and losses and what have you done for me lately ....... MEANING ..... people such as yourself only point to Notre Dame's record in RECENT history and not over the course of history. because Notre Dame hasnt won a national championship since 1988, havent had a good season recently .... its what have you done for me lately ..... instead of looking at the whole picture and understand that in college football, like no other sport ..... history matters.

hope that clears it up for you .... idiot.

TRY to improve your reading comprehension skills you illiterate.

LOL Bryce Harte! Took you long enough to post , as of late you are one the early birds who like to post your comments ( excuses ) for the irish losing ... Why so late??? running out of EXCUSES are YOU??? Should the Irish ( give me SOME credit BRYCE ) go on to beat Stanford ( COUGH! COUGH! HACK!) would they turn down a lesser bowl bid?? This is where the Notre Dame arrogance comes out. it's one thing tourn down a bowl game if you have other opportunities, but if the irish turn down a lesser bowl game because they think that thet are above it ..... What woud THAT be called??? Numbers don't lie bryce, if the irish are invited to play in the toilet bowl they should go.

I won't feel sorry for CW, if let go he will be compensated well. But this idea that he was a great OC for the Pats is bull. Bill Belichick is the man, CW followed the game plan as was laid out by Bill. Remember they went 19-0 before losing to the Giants, CW was with ND. How ever not to just single out CW, but all the coordinator's under Belichick, who became coaches (not one is successful).

Considering, this is not the AD who gave CW the contract extension, there may be hope yet.

Charlie Weis never was and never will be a big-time football coach. First, the man has some real class issues. He's this great, big fat guy who stands on the sidelines with his nose running and a stupid expression on his face. During an interview, he has a hard time stringing together three coherent sentences. Is this really who you want to represent the most visible program at your university?! OK, so all these identity issues might be enduring if Weis was a bonafide winner -- maybe. But the guy has more than proven that he's not a winner. Notre Dame comes with some advantages that most other universities don't enjoy. The coach at Notre Dame is one of two or three coaches in the nation who can say he selects rather than recruits. Yet all of Weis' teams have been bad. If you watch the games, you'll see his big people are consistently dominated (especially along the defensive line). This says Weis isn't that good at recognizing good. big people or he gets them and can't develop them. Either way, it means he's not a big time college coach. It's not only time for the man to go -- he should have never been hired.

It takes time to build a good program/team. The reason the admin gave him 10 year contract is to build that foundation. Constantly changing coaches is not going to resurrect a new environment but retooling a philosophy of teaching football....these are student (first) atheletes- which will confuse the new blue chipper coming in. Allow the the man another year so that he can build that foundation. He is a great teacher and he is going to build the man and athelete for a great school that has extreme high standards. This school is built on the tradition of high academic first and then the sport of football.. The result is futile because the public can only see winning as the only option - we are going to fire a great coach and hire a coach that will not honor the tradition of high academic standard and graduation(96%) . New Blue chips + Clausen + Tate + other seniors = Wins.

284 - Bryce - We are not talking a few million here, we are talking big bucks. Have you heard one thing from Weis that would indicate that he will quit? To resign would be the correct thing to do but that will not happen. ND needs to get on a plane to Florida with a bag full of money and fly Meyers back with them. Wait a minute, that is what we did with Saban, it could work!

michael h: That's why I said a negotiated buyout. But you're probably right, he won't resign. If we beat Stanford, which I seriously doubt will be even as close as the Stanford-USC game, Swarbrick will probably recommend bringing him back for one more shot at proving he knows what he's doing. I almost feel like rooting for Stanford in this one. Almost.
