Washington’s Locker will start at UCLA

SEATTLE (AP)—Washington quarterback Jake Locker will start Saturday when the Huskies try to break their 10-game road losing streak at UCLA, despite a deep thigh bruise that limited him the last two weeks.

After having his activity held back in practice early this week, coach Steve Sarkisian took the reins off his quarterback Thursday to test and see how his right thigh injury would respond. Locker passed.

“I wanted to see him run full speed. I wanted to see him really open up and go full speed, and he was able to do that,” Sarkisian said.

Asked if the Huskies’ playcalling would be handcuffed in any way, Sarkisian said, “We won’t hold back.”

Locker was injured in the first quarter of Washington’s 43-19 loss to Oregon on Oct. 24. On a third-and-2 run at the Oregon 12 midway through the first quarter, Locker kept for 3 yards before taking a hard hit from the Ducks’ Javes Lewis. From there, Locker’s leg became progressively stiffer and he was noticeably limping in the final minutes of the blowout.

At first, Sarkisian said Locker was cramping, but a few days later Sarkisian said he had a quadriceps injury.

The injury has lingered to the point where Locker was a spectator during Washington’s off week. The bleeding and swelling in his right leg was still there earlier this week, but Locker said on Monday the pain and stiffness has gotten better each day.

Locker split reps with backup Ronnie Fouch this week, but was given the majority of the work on Thursday.

“It’s stability. It’s great to have your starting quarterback,” Sarkisian said. “Never mind an execution and all that standpoint. Just from an execution standpoint, being in the huddle, all the things that he brings. There are some obvious leadership skills that he brings that I know the team feeds off of.”

Locker leads the Pac-10 in total offense at 271.9 yards per game and is third in yards passing. Washington hasn’t won a road game since Nov. 3, 2007 at Stanford, but its last two road games at Notre Dame and Arizona State were decided in overtime or the final seconds.

“I think we’re close,” Sarkisian said. “We’re understanding what it takes.”

The last do it all QB i remember was Kordell Stewart. He ran, he threw, he caught, he punted. Jack of all trades, master of none. I really liked watching him play.

#11 ....... Steve Young was NOT a running QB. he was a good scrambler, there is a difference. he did run more than your average QB ..... but he was always a throw first QB, and he was a damned good QB passing the football. Vick, on the other hand .... was pure garbage. all he could do was run. even before the dog crap broke ..... he was considered a bust. not a bust like Cryin Ryan Leaf ..... but he came NOWHERE NEAR living up to expectations. he was supposed to be a do it all QB ..... and all he could do was run. Vick couldnt pass his way out of a wet paper bag.

there have been QBs that could get yards on the ground .... like Young, Elway, Moon .... to name a few ...... but they could all pass the football. they were all passers first, and runners second.

I love seeing Locker run. Sometimes when he's holding the ball and I see a 25 yard window I yell run run!! But Locker deserves a decent shot in the NFL and as a running QB he will never get that shot.]

    Nonsense.

Two words: Steve Young Another two words: Michael Vick.

Know how many Pro Bowls those two were voted to?

its very simple ..... for us to have any chance in hell of making a bowl game we have to beat UCLA. ive already put Washington St in the bank, and if we beat UCLA that brings us to 5 wins ...... that would mean we would have to pull one out of our asses against Cal or Oregon St to get to 6 wins. maybe we can win one of those games .... but i highly doubt we can win both ..... so we REALLY need this UCLA game.

    Go Dawgs !!!!

    Ducks Suck !!!!

But Locker deserves a decent shot in the NFL and as a running QB he will never get that shot. He's got to stay in the pocket and let his receivers get open...then go to the check down..then finally run like a mad man! However he is oh so good at throwing on the run, get some naked bootlegs going! Go DAWGS!

Locker had at least 20 plays of 20+ yards as a freshman. All came rolling out to his left.
Triple option. Pitch, run, or throw deep. He has since stayed in the pocket, or rolled to his right.
    WTF?

My biggest concern is that Jake might over think things and make a mistake. Is this stay in the pocket idea cemented? If not I would prefer instinct to prevail, especially since he has shown just how talented he is at taking off and avoiding tacklers.
