WAC suspends replay official who goofed

DENVER (AP)—The Western Athletic Conference has suspended a replay official for one game after he failed to overturn a call in a game last weekend between San Jose State and Boise State.

Official Michael Goshima’s one-game suspension will go into effect this weekend.

The suspension—the first of a WAC replay official since the NCAA implemented instant replay in 2006—was based on a play where a runner was ruled short of a first down and Goshima’s review incorrectly upheld the ruling on the field.

The WAC said that upon further inspection, “the runner clearly made the first down and the call should have been reversed.”

“The WAC expects the same type of performance from our instant replays officials as we do from the on field officials,” Commissioner Karl Benson said in a statement. “And while errors are going to occur both on the field and in the replay booth when they do, there must be accountability.

“Instant replay is used to get it right on the field and in this case the official had a chance to reverse a call at a very critical time in the game and did not. Thus, he will be suspended for his next assignment.”

In 2003, the WAC suspended an entire crew for a series of mistakes at the end of a game between San Jose State and Hawaii.

SJ4410 find something else to do. The WAC is on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN360. Your existence is on the I don't give a s__t channel. There are plenty of us who watch WAC football (I am an alumni of Nevada). If you aren't interested move along. Nobody cares about your opinion. PISS OFF.

Wow!! Boise State only beat the Spartans 45 -7!! How critical could one call be! Unless it knocked Boise State out of another TD! This instant replay is really more of a hinderence than a help! Officials are becoming gun-shy and don't want to be shown up on national TV so they are either over-officiating or not making calls period! I guess the WAC decided to make an example of this guy to discourage future calls.

Let's see...replay official blows call and is suspended for one game. LB Brandon Spikes tries to gouge someone's eyes out and is suspended for one game. Wonderful...

Not sure I agree on suspending theses guys for missing calls. They already have affected way too many games this year, in my opinion, by calling entirely too many penalties. Put more pressure on these refs to perform there will be more "over officiating," which will lead to even more flags. Tell them to swallow the flags...i said FLAGS, and keep in mind it is not an easy job to make subjective assessment on an objective rule at the speed football is played. WE ARE.....

Let's go back to old school football. Get rid of instant replay if it is going to be used to suspend officials. In the future we won't even have oficials to blame everything on. There will be compturized robots instead; and then they will create robot players and maybe even robot fans and coaches. Of course robots could be programmed not to whine and blame. The game will be pure - but not nearly as fun to watch.

Oh, stunning. Too bad that horrid staff that officiated the 2008 Wisconsin @ Fresno State game didn't get this punishment also for the blatant missed fumble. That made the game WAY too close. Still, this sort of punitive action is what the other conferences SHOULD take in the future. Mess up a call and get suspended, wonderful lesson. I'm sure the other WAC officials are quaking in their boots.
