Groh dismissed as head coach at Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)—Virginia fired Al Groh after nine seasons at his alma mater Sunday, ending a tenure marked by his inability to beat rival Virginia Tech.

Groh’s dismissal came less than 24 hours after the Cavaliers (3-9, 2-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) lost 42-13 at home to the No. 11 Hokies, finishing their worst season since they were 2-9 in 1982. It also was their eighth loss to the Hokies in Groh’s nine tries.

“There is not a coach in the college game who has worked harder than Al Groh in trying to build a football program,” athletic director Craig Littlepage said in a statement. “Football is his life and he dedicated himself to the university and to our football team. We are grateful for his service and for his commitment to his players and his coaching staff.”

The 65-year-old Groh told The Associated Press by telephone that it had been a “wonderful day” because of the number of players and coaches that got in touch to show their support.

Cavaliers players lined up all the way down a long hallway in the McCue Center, where the football operation is housed, waiting for a chance to meet with Groh individually after being informed of his dismissal, and Groh said the outpouring from them was “very gratifying.”

He also issued a statement through the school in which he said he felt “very fortunate” to have been given the opportunity to coach at Virginia.

“I am an ordinary guy who has been lucky to have been around some extraordinary players and coaches who put me in a position to enjoy many fulfilling games and seasons,” he said.

“I have coached Hall of Fame players, worked alongside Hall of Fame coaches, and coached in two Super Bowls, but my time as the Head Coach of the Virginia Cavaliers has been my most memorable coaching experience,” he said.

Groh had two years remaining on his contract and will receive a buyout of approximately $4.33 million, Littlepage said. The search for a replacement will begin immediately.

Groh was hired on Dec. 30, 2000, when he resigned after one season as the head coach of the New York Jets to take over at the school where he lettered in football and lacrosse, graduating in 1967. He replaced George Welsh, who had retired after 19 seasons.

Welsh, then the ACC career leader in victories, had just two losing seasons in his 19 years, but the Cavaliers finished 6-6 in his final season, prompting the change.

Groh went 59-53 with the Cavaliers and guided them to five bowl games, including four straight beginning with his second season. The team averaged eight wins over those four years, but managed just one more winning season in his last four, going 9-4 in 2007.

“My coaching philosophy and method of building teams has trust and teamwork as bedrocks. We were poised to solidify our position as a top team. Instead, as that trust and collaboration deteriorated, I could see this day coming,” he said in the statement. “We arrived with a set of principles that we have tried to remain faithful to and we leave with those principles intact.”

Groh, the ACC coach of the year in 2002 and ’07, was 36-36 in conference games.

Virginia lost its final six games this year and its last six against the Hokies, who joined the conference in 2004 and have been the league’s dominant team ever since.

Virginia’s decline was especially felt at home games, where the average attendance for 61,500-seat Scott Stadium had dropped by 13,600 in two seasons heading into Saturday afternoon’s game. That drew a season-high 58,555 fans, but nearly half of them were Hokies supporters and many chanted “Keep Al Groh!” as the final minutes ticked off the clock.

In his postgame news conference, Groh did not directly answer a question about his future, but instead read a poem, “The Guy in the Glass,” about how the most important person an individual has to please is himself. He closed with a testimonial about himself.

“When I visited the guy in the glass, I saw that he’s a guy of commitment, of integrity, of dependability and accountability,” Groh said. “He’s loyal, his spirit is indomitable and he’s caring and loving. I’m sure I will always call the guy in the glass a friend.”

Groh also read the poem to his team before meeting with the media, and besides their disappointing finish, the players were emotional about falling short in Groh’s final game.

“It’s sad to see him go like this,” defensive end Nate Collins, one of six captains on this year’s team, said afterward. “I know me and the seniors talked this week, and we were just doing everything we could to get this win for him and for the coaches, because none of the coaches know what their futures are going to be like after this game. It’s just tough.

“I hope the best for Coach Groh. I love Coach Groh like he’s a father, and he’s been a father figure to everyone here, and I don’t think anyone can really say otherwise.”

Groh began his postgame press conference with these words: “We made a pretty good go of it for a little while.”

He was talking about the game, but he might as well have been talking about his time at Virginia.

Oh, I see where the VA Tech going downhill comment came from... I guess when you play for the NCAA College Football National Championship as VA Tech did in 1999, and haven't gotten back there (yet) despite a half dozen seasons in the top 10 since (something else UVA football wouldn't know anything about), I guess you could say that is a bit downhill from the pinnacle of college football...

By the way, who was the last team to beat Cincinnati? Hint: It was the only team this year (so far) to hold a second half lead on Alabama for more than a quarter. Yes, VA Tech.

As I said before, UVA needs a better coach to get them back into the top three college football programs in Virginia which this past year would have been VA Tech, Richmond (who beat W&M), and William & Mary (who beat UVA). Maybe the next UVA football coach will at least be able to beat Duke when they come to Charlottesville...

Best of wishes to Mr Groh and I hope he finds a better place to coach. And thanks for 8 enjoyable games in the rivalry.

Zolo, You have some nerve saying Tech has a declining program, UVA is the one with the declining program in case you haven't noticed..!! Tech has won 3 ACC Championships in the past 5 years since joining the conference. UVA only 2 and that was way back in 89, and 95 yea I remember when they were called the chokies but that been many years ago, I reckon the wahoo's have been the BOOHOO"S for the last 14 years. And yea I remember the RVD thats the district the PCHS Cougars used to dominate. You sound like an arrogant better than everybody else ''SALEMITE''..!!! Bet thats where your from, Sure has hell sounds like it...

Sad to see a loyal coach go since there arent too many of them around anymore. However, i see no reason for the VT bashing, to those who say its a declining program...really? Go back and look at the history, in the past 10 years (yes since Vick) we've done nothing but get better and better and become one of the annual football powerhouses. And to those who ask who we play...we had the 6th hardest schedule in NCAA football. Thats the hardest schedule youll find within the top 10 BCS schools. Look it up. So please, before you say BYU or even Houston is better, check your facts. We lost 3 games this year, to a debatable #1 team, GT who held #7 and is still in the top 10, and UNC who was also ranked throughout the season. VT is a legit football team no matter what you say, this story isnt even about VT; so why not keep it to UVa and the coach they had...you know, what the story is about. I am a hokie and cant the hoos but I will say I have respect for a good, loyal coach. You dont find many of them today. Best of luck Groh.

UVA will get this one right when they hire a new coach. I hope they don't compromise too much. All the top coaches in Div I football are not shooting with a straight pool stick and the NCAA just overlooks them. VT had their moment when Mike Vick played for the championship and that is it. It's been downhill ever since and yes I grew up 30mins from Blacksburg so I know a lot about the program and played basketball and football in the old Roanoke Vally District with players that went to Tech and UVA and Tech has always tried to measure up against UVA. Having a loyal fan base and a declining football program isn't something I would be bragging about. I remember when they called Tech the CHOKIES.

Most of you posters have forgotten the reason the University of Virginia exist, or any other institute of high learning, for that matter. Al Groh didn't win enough football games, so, he was fired. He didn't beat Virginia Tech often enough, so, he was fired.
Most of you posters seem to feel winning is everything. I think not. Educating our young people is the reason for universities. These young people are the future leaders of this nation. Education is the number one priority, not wins and losses. If anyone disagrees, I feel sorry for your stupidity.
Al Groh has character, integrity and honor. Judge him on those traits, not wins and losses. Al Groh graduates players. Judge him on that trait, not wins and losses. Al Groh had to recruit players that could qualify for a school like the University of Virginia, not the VT's of the world.
Think about it. He did it his way, the right way.

Forget Bud Foster. If he is offered a job and he takes it it will be only with a mid major level school. He has the personality of a dead rat. That's why he was not hired by WVA and Clemson. He will be Beamer's bat boy more than likely the rest of his career. I say get Rocco or even better go after the Rutgers head coach.

#50..ZOLO Seems like UVA is the redheaded stepchild and you have been beat like one for the last 10 years at the hand of VA TECH. and as for changes at VA TECH keep dreaming Bud is payed to well to go anywhere else. He's dedicated to Beamer and the coaching staff. As for facilities, At least we can fill the stands unlike UVA because you all suk so bad.

Either some of you are not real followers of college football or just plain idiots. But, for those of you that think that UVA cannot get talent. Please go the NFL rosters and they are full of UVA alums, no not a bunch of special team player,s but legitimate stars and some future HOF'ers. So there goes your argument about UVA not being able to attract talent and thinking we should be in the MAC or IVY league. These ongoing jokes from pinheads are played. I would continue, but I get the feeling I am waisting my time with some of you, so I am out!

John A don't know where you get your info. UVA has some of the best facilities in DIV 1 football. Just look at The U or VA Tech facilities. No comparsion. VA Tech will always be the red headed step child to UVA. Change is coming to Blacksburg soon. Bud Foster will leave Tech soon.

Until the administration and the fans get serious about football, virginia will remain a middling team...al groh is in my opinion, and that of NFL GM's, one of the last real coaches in college - by that I mean someone who actually teaches and improves their game beyond just out-recruiting the other guy and coming up with gimmick offenses (when was the last Boise or Texas Tech QB a success at the next level)? He has recruited nationally and trained an impressive list of NFL players, but their facilities lag behind most of the rest of the acc, and their admissions standards make tech's a joke (despite the fact that tech graduates slightly more), and even duke relaxed athletic admissions as part of the deal to hire Cutcliffe. did anyone notice that the attendance drop this year coincided at least in part with a 'brilliant' plan by the AD and marketeers to sell tech game tickets on the open market as part of a three pack, so that hokies fans bought three games just to get to the tech game and then trashed the other two? with ploys like that, and a fan base that still thinks its a stop on the way to another party and bails when they're only down 14 (or up against indiana) are the main reasons it will be tough for any new coach to win consistently at virginia. see this article for some actual analysis and not just hyperventilating jerry ratliffe on what went wrong for al groh - http://www2.dailyprogress.com/cdp/sports/columnists/ratcliffe_on/article/analyzing_what_went_wrong_for_al_groh/49017/

Yo acc_football69 I can remember the 1990s when playing FSU was like fighting the Roman army--no chance! If blowhard politicians like the gov get out of the way and let Fisher clearly take the reins, Tallahassee could rule once again.
