Ex-Tenn. football player Edwards pleads guilty

  • Print

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Former Tennessee defensive back Mike Edwards has pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment as part of a plea deal made with prosecutors.

Edwards, Nu’Keese Richardson and Janzen Jackson were charged with attempted armed robbery Nov. 12 when three men reported to police that two men tried to rob them while they were sitting in their car at a Knoxville convenience store.

Edwards pleaded guilty Thursday in Knoxville and was sentenced to two years of probation. He will have to be a student or work full-time during his sentence.

Richardson, who was dismissed from the team with Edwards, pleaded guilty Monday to attempted robbery and received probation. Jackson was reinstated to the team after all charges against him were dropped.

For all that you were wondering about SEC rules here is the answer:

Greg Sankey, SEC associate commissioner for compliance, told the Birmingham News a while back. “I have a 427-page rule manual with thousands of interpretations. The reality of the regulatory culture is you’re going to have violations — circumstances where people go outside the boundaries of the rules.

I like the part of 1000's of interpretations, so maybe you can understand the Kiffin statement on Meyers last year of violating the rules.

On the 19th of Dec, UT self-imposed the penalty of won’t bring interns on the road with them during recruiting visits and the SEC concurred with the action. So one investigation is closed, and the Tennessee coach and the Vol’s won’t be allowed to bring interns on the road with them during recruiting visits after Steve Rubio’s trip to St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., spurred an internal review by UT of its practices. As I predicted wasn’t in the NY Times or on ESPN not even on the websites. I waited for almost a month to see is something would be said.

One investigation (Hostess-gate) is pending in reality there is no investigation only an inquiry in which nearly every Vol committed recruit and their family has been questioned. Nothing has been found and no letter to the University has been issued. I would bet the VOL wont received even a secondary violation, but nothing will come out till after National Signing Day. Again UT has still not received an official letter of inquiry from the NCAA regarding the activities of the members of the university’s Orange Pride.

As it turns out, Georgia has committed just as many NCAA secondary violations as Tennessee in the past year. Why arent they on ESPN and New York Times?

Via a Freedom of Information request, how many violations the Bulldogs had committed in the same period. You may be surprised to find out that they’ve also had six secondary violations in the last year

The Bulldogs’ were as follows (by date reported by UGA):
    • Jan. 9: Matthew Stafford and three teammates received complimentary tickets to an NFL game from an NFL player, a Level I violation.
    • Jan. 21: Assistant coaches Mike Bobo and John Jancek left messages for the same prospect on consecutive days (can call just once a week), a Level II violation.
    • March 17: New England Patriots tight end and UGA alum Ben Watson (deemed representative of athletics interest) telephoned signee Arthur Lynch to congratulate him on signing with the Bulldogs, a Level I violation.
    • July 13: Coaching staff members “inadvertently” called prospective student-athletes (PSAs) before the permissible period and twice called the same PSA in the same week, a Level I violation.
    • August 5: A recruiting graduate assistant telephoned high school coaches regarding transcripts, a Level I violation.
    • Nov. 17: A coaching staff member evaluated a PSA more than once during the fall evaluation period (level undetermined as incident is still being evaluated by NCAA regulators).

Tennessee’s violations in general involved Kiffin more directly but also are considered secondary:
    • In February he mentioned prospect Bryce Brown by name in a live radio interview.
    • He mentioned prospect J.C. Copeland on his Twitter page.
    • Twice the Vols were cited for impermissible game-day simulations.
    • Kiffin was videotaped on an “Outside the Lines” piece while meeting with two recruits.
    • Improper contact by Kiffin, according to the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

    .
For some reason Alabama and Auburn always tap-dance around these things and Vanderbilt always gets out of it because it’s a private school.

Georgia Tech reported that it had no NCAA violations since Dec. 1, 2008.

The best Google could do was a June 28th story in the Knoxville News-Sentinel that had Tennessee “leading” the SEC with six secondary’s, followed by Ole Miss (5), LSU (4), Georgia (then with 3), Mississippi State (3), South Carolina (3), Arkansas (2), Florida (2) and Kentucky (0). (Note that Bama and Auburn aren’t included for the reason they will not disclose any information.) LSU, it should be noted, is also being investigated in an ongoing NCAA probe.

Since the article was written FLA has had 2 more confirmed secondary violations and there is a probe on Arrests and traffic violations that have been ongoing by the NCAA. Let’s not forget about the eye gouging and the DUI. Meyers being fined this year and let’s not even talk about the Meyers situation.

I thought someone may enjoy knowing the truth

    Source: http://blogs.ajc.com/recruiting/2009/12/17/georgia-has-as-many-rules-violations-6-as-tennessee/
Florida faced varying levels of adversity just about every week. "Meyer even called it the “year of stuff.”
It included flulike symptoms that ravaged the team; Tebow’s concussion; hijacked cell phone numbers; linebacker Brandon Spikes’ eye-gouging incident; Meyer’s $30,000 fine for criticizing officials; defensive end Carlos Dunlap’s drunk-driving arrest; some close games; a few controversial calls; and what seemed like a season-long offensive slump. (They forgot to add the arrests and traffic tickets in the article)

What I feel sorry for is the FLA recruits that now have committed and Meyers won’t be there next year.

Last there is Jesse Scroggins who committed to USC and all year talked about the VOL’s secondary violations but USC is facing several Major Violations now that Coach Carroll is leaving I wonder what he is thinking now as well as the other commitments.

Jeff, UT should be on probation because Lane Kiffin is paying young female students to sleep with recruits. If the president of the university was a decent human being they would run Lane out of town on a rail. If the president had any since he would do it soon before Lane gets them in serious trouble. I admit I never have liked UT but at least I respected them under Phil Fulmer. This guy is a total classless, loud mouthed tool bag.

Why should we be on probation John? Multiple secondary violations, like many other schools, is not enough to do so.

    Casie C,
Every university does a background check on every recruit. After the schools receive the results of the background check, they either choose to offer a scholarship or not to offer a scholarship. I think it would be fair to say 90% or so would have backed off on this Richardson kid. Almost every school in the SEC and many schools outside of the SEC were very interested until they saw his baggage. Only two SEC schools left the offer on the table and we both know who those two schools were. There are some kids that should never be considered because of their past records.

The problem lies with everyone. The fans demand winners. The alumni demand winners. Most presidents demand winners, but that is not the case at Georgia. Adams could care less if UGA ever won a game or match in any type of sport. But, thank goodness, Adams does not get involved with the every day operations of athletics at UGA. If he did, we would have no need to even field a team in any sport.

Inside reports from UGA confirm Kirdy Smart has accepted the UGA offer.

Congratulations on your National Championship. Too bad the university decided to display the trophy at Wall Mart.

Oh, one last thing. RickZ is the flower of his family. The Blooming Idiot.

Yup, and we know that the Gaytor program is full of saints and angels.

Laugh now for what goes around, comes around.

And John, learn some new material. The "UT" and thug thing is old material. I notice you didn't list your team affiliation.

As for the young athletes, what a waste of young athletic talent and public scholarship money. You would think these young men would learn from the mistakes of others, but I suppose not.

None of you really know what was going on at the time of the robbery. Yes, jackson was there. Being there does not make him guilty. The two jackasses went around the corner of the store and were attempting to rob someone and Jackson came around the corner, saw what was happening, and STOPPED it. And boo hoo hoo the kid likes to smoke weed....

It's not you michael h., it's a thing I have against those words "trust me." I have trusted Ebert's movie reviews... till lately. Cuz lately I get the feeling he's been napping instead of watching the entire movie... but still turning in his review. I, too, trust my girlfriend... to not get my jokes.
