Kiffin defends game plan, takes shot at Meyer

  • Print

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin says he put his Volunteers in the best position they could be in to beat Florida. Then he took one more shot at Gators coach Urban Meyer.

Meyer said Sunday that he kept his game plan conservative in No. 1 Florida’s 23-13 win after he felt the Vols didn’t appear to be playing for a win. He also said several of his players had been hit by the flu.

On Monday, Kiffin said he didn’t want to respond to Meyer’s comment. But asked whether he was worried about the flu also hitting Tennessee, he said: “I don’t know. I guess we’ll wait and after we’re not excited about a performance, we’ll tell you everybody was sick.”

Tennessee (1-2, 0-1 Southeastern Conference) was tagged as a 30-point underdog thanks in part to some of Kiffin’s offseason comments about Florida.

The Vols’ first-year coach pledged to sing “Rocky Top” after beating the Gators at the Swamp and accused Meyer of an NCAA violation in trying to hang on to a recruit who eventually joined Kiffin at Tennessee.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive reprimanded Kiffin for the latter and warned all coaches about taking shots at one another.

“This offseason the commissioner made a big deal of renewing vows in terms of what we say about other teams, other coaches and other players” Kiffin said. “Obviously Urban feels he doesn’t need to follow that. We won’t say anything else.”

Tennessee didn’t play its role in what was supposed to be a Florida blowout.

With 11:37 left in the game and Florida (3-0, 1-0) holding a 23-6 lead, the Vols recovered a fumble by Tim Tebow at their own 2. Kiffin turned to running backs Montario Hardesty and Bryce Brown to pound out runs and catch short passes.

That’s where Meyer felt Kiffin wasn’t concern about winning.

“They wanted to shorten the game. I remember looking out there and there’s 10 minutes left in the game and there’s no no-huddle, they are down, I think it was 23-6 and (there’s no) urgency,” he said.

Kiffin said he preferred to turn to his tailbacks, who had little trouble moving the chains against the Gators’ defense, rather than the Vols’ struggling passing game.

It worked. Montario Hardesty scored on a 17-yard run with 8:11 left to cut the margin to 23-13.

“That was the best thing to put us in position to win, and we moved the ball doing that,” he said. “That was how we needed to play at that time.”

With about 2 minutes left in the game and a chance to score, Kiffin gave Jonathan Crompton—who had already thrown one interception—a chance to throw down field to Denarius Moore. The pass was picked off by Ahmad Black for Crompton’s seventh interception of the season.

“People should know the truth. We came out to play,” Moore said. “They said it themselves. They didn’t expect us to come out and play like that. We just played our hardest, and so did they.”

Kiffin said the Vols got beat by Tebow, who made some key scrambling plays in third-and-long situations.

He’d also like another shot at the senior quarterback who he calls “Superman.”

“I wish it was like basketball where we got another chance to play them, where we play them two times in a year,” he said. “Unfortunately we won’t get to play him again, and they’ll have to play without (Tebow) next time.”

Hello oldturd post #430 Lane Kiffin said," He would be singing Rocky Top all night long", after beating the Florida Gators this year. Kiffin didn't back up @#$%, he lost and did the only thing he could do, open that big mouth of his and keep lying to try and save face. Florida backed the Vols into playing catch-up the entire game, and then , as usual, the Gators smacked that ass!

This is the SEC, what teams in the SEC like each other? So who cares about stepping on some toes? I've always had more respect for someone who had the balls, to say what they had in your face. Keep keeping it real Lane; you are just what UT needs...A heart beat.

You know I really love how you all keep talking about how big of a cry baby Kiffin is. Granted he does talk a lot and does not have the wins to back up his@#$%iness at this point. However, let me introduce an idea to you using a little logic. What are the purpose of his comments, you may ask. Think about it, the more and more people keep complaining and talking about the comments he makes, the more and more his name and the University of Tennessee will hit the talkshows, radio, tv, etc. This in turn leads to more publicity, which leads to more attention from possible recruits, which leads to landing great recruiting classes, which in turn leads to wins in the long term. Look for example at some of the players Kiffin has already been able to recruit such as Bryce Brown. Have any of you even looked at the players they have recruited for next year? He has a class at the present that will possibly when finished may be the top recruiting class for 2010. While all of his talk may get on your nerves, you must grant that it is at least effective in these areas. Think about it, I'm making this post to just educate you on this issue, while you will surely reply with a rebuttal to it. Mission accomplished for both Meyer and Kiffin: over 400 posts about Florida and UT which equals publicty for both programs.

I will close saying that the SEC is the best conference by far at the present, just check how many national championships they have won lately. Astounding isn't it? Also, I would like to add that anybody who would argue against Florida being #1 in the polls right now must be crazy. They are the defending national champions for crying out loud. Until beaten they righteously deserve it. I will concede too that Tebow should have won the Heismen last year, Bradford just happened to be the media darling at that time. Good day.

Defense is key in the SEC. I'm not going to say it's a general rule that the SEC focuses on defense more than other conferences, because I don't watch every team out there. If you expect high scoring games all the time chances are you are not a fan of the SEC. It's silly to make statements about a conference you don't watch.

Lane Kiffin needs to take his big mouth back to the west coast where it belongs. He has no understanding of the culture that makes SEC football so great. You don't gain respect in the SEC by running your mouth before you even take the field. I imagine it's just a recruiting tactic, but a very shallow one at best. The flu has been prevalent this season at several Universities. Alabama had trouble with it the first two weeks of the season. I see no reason to doubt Meyer. After all, he didn't open his mouth until after he beat Tennessee.

Lane are you just stupid? Apparently he has forgotten that his team still lost the game. A loss is a loss, regardless of a moral victory. I wish this guy would just shut up and learn that. I guess that lesson is still too hard to learn. WHAT AN IDIOT!!!

The only thing I see is a little boy named Lane Kiffen, with his daddy by his side, whinning and crying. He was a loser in the NFL and will be the same in the SEC. When his father retires he will be the worst coach in the SEC. Urban just needs to move on and not give him the respect of conversation. It is fine with me if Tenn. becomes the "Wait till next year team". Lane Kiffen=LOSER.

The only reason this win is in question is because a bunch of people who really do not know football predicted such a blowout. They forgot this is the SEC and a Rivialry game. Never trusted predictions and this proves my point even more. Just win Urban, just win.

    Gooooo Gators!! Chomp Chomp

One last thing kudos to FSU. Way to straighten the WAC out.

I am a Tennessee Vols fan. And I somewhat agree with Meyer. The plays that Kiffin was calling all day seemed too conservative. And I agree with Gable. Crompton is the worst QB I have seen at Tennessee. Even Casey Claussen wasn't good, but he was better than Crompton. I just hope that Hardesty and Brown are ready to run their butts off this year because after the last two games you can't trust Crompton to get the job done.

The good folks at Tennesse need to fire Kiffin before he causes too much embarassment.
I'm beginning to think Al Davis is smarter than everyone thought.

Lane Kiffin may not even get a chance to coach against Urban next year if he cant start to win some games. So he should zip it up. Urban needs to stop fueling the fire and move on to the next game, because the bottom line is that Florida is going for a 3rd championship in 4 years and Tennesse may not even win 3 games this year. although with a better QB they may of pulled it off last week. Crompton could be the worst QB I have ever seen at Tennesse.

Ummmm TINA B you are the idiot....Oklahoma State turned around and lost to HOUSTON remember? And dont be mad because the BIG 12 or the BIG 10 or PAC 10 just cant measure up against the SEC.....The Trojans were upset by Washington by the way.......and LSU beat Washington by a strong margin...so I dont know what the heck you are talking about lady. Georgia is in a rebuilding year and still chose to play a strong team like OSU. And, ignorant people only make comments about people from the south being inbred, shows just how uneducated you really are.

Please...the Gators will do fine next year without Tebow....Kiffen would quickly dismiss this game and quickly move on to next season. The Gators will be reloading next season, but it will still be a successful year.
