Vols safety Janzen Jackson reinstated to team

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Tennessee freshman safety Janzen Jackson will start Saturday against Kentucky, bolstering a Volunteers secondary that’s been struggling recently.

Coach Lane Kiffin reinstated Jackson to the team on Tuesday, a day after prosecutors dropped attempted aggravated robbery charges pending against him.

“He was cleared of any wrongdoing and any knowledge at all of this situation happening, and so part of you feels bad for him in a way because he’s had to go through this,” Kiffin said Tuesday. “I know he’s excited to be back, and he’s ready to go.”

Jackson was arrested and charged Nov. 12 after a report of two men dressed in hooded jackets, one brandishing a gun, approaching three men at a convenience store near the Tennessee campus demanding “everything you’ve got.” A third man approached later, telling the other two, “We’ve got to go,” according to a police report.

The victims later identified Jackson’s teammates, Nu’Keese Richardson and Mike Edwards, as the two men who approached the car first. The pair of freshmen have since been kicked off the team and out of school, and charges against them are still pending.

“I would sure hope that it is a wake-up call,” Kiffin said. “Even though you’re cleared of any wrongdoing, it’s just a wake-up call to what the reality is. It’s, ‘Hey, if I did do something like that, look what could be taken away from me.”’

It’s also a relief for a Volunteers secondary which has spent the past two games shuffling players because of injuries and Jackson’s ban from the team.

After playing an unsure Prentiss Wagner in Jackson’s free safety spot and using a few freshmen and walk-on players to fill out the in-game rotation in a loss to Mississippi, Kiffin switched starting cornerback Dennis Rogan to free safety.

As Tennessee (6-5, 3-4 Southeastern Conference) prepared to face Vanderbilt and Kentucky (7-4, 3-4)—two teams that rely more on the run than their passing game—Rogan was a better fit at safety, where he’d practiced some during fall camp.

“We had to go the direction of playing as if (Jackson) was not coming back all year because we didn’t know, and the last thing you want to do is bank on something that we don’t know,” the coach said.

The Vols were never distracted by the publicity surrounding their teammates’ arrests, Kiffin said. The coaches were, however, because of the extra time spent making their game plans around Jackson and pursuing information on the players’ cases.

“The distraction was there was three players that weren’t playing for us, including one great player,” Kiffin said.

If I were walking around with a couple of "friends" and one of them pulled a gun on someone, I don't
think I would say we gotta go. If Jackson wasn't involved, he should have said I need to go into the store or use some excuse to stay at the scene. When the cops arrived then he could say look I didn't know these guys were going to do this and tell the police who did it. I guess you don't rat on your "bros". I have to agree. Something about this stinks and Jackson would get the same punishment as the other two.

How the hell does Kiffen get the blame for what a player does ? The guys that where out robbing didn't go ask the coach if they could go out at 2:30 am to rob someone. You haters are just to smart and I would only worry about your police work if I was deputy Fife. The 2 involved are no longer on roster at Tn, a choice made by Kiffen. Tennessee has done alots this year toward a winning season but just a small step toward what is Coach Kiffen goals.with-in 3 years I look for the winner of the NC game will be TENNESSEE and coach of the same year will be no other than the great Coach Kiffen. I LOVE THEM VOLS....Go Tennessee!!

As a long time vol fan i am not quite sure if this is just a hiccup or a bad sign of things to come? it does make me wonder about this new coaching staffs choice of new recruits time will tell if this coaching staff will learn form this mistake and make the necessary adjustments to the teams attitudes or continue to recruit wanna bee thugs. i hope for the former. as for all of you on here that like to act as if this is something that greattly affects your life you need to get a clue. and some of you here need to grow up and stop acting like spoiled little brats. and then their are those on here that want to act educated when in fact you have never set foot inside a building beyond high school. this season will be over soon and kiffin and his staff will be judged accordingly, but somethings are more important than winning statistics. these young men will possibly future leaders and fathers and someone needs to instill some integrity and morality in them since it is obvious that their parents failed to do so!! as a former military officer i have learned that all winners and highly motivated people have a commom character trait, and that is a sense of humility and decency that transcends other character flaws. this is what needs to be instilled in these young men, not well as long as we win i dont care what you do!!!!! just like when i was in the air force you were told that you are representing your county and your oath of office in or out of uniform on or off the base. same thing goes for ut players. that is what kiffin needs to get straight right now!!! HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!!

You can read an arrest report by going to GovArrestRecords.org and paying $30.00. It's that simple. I searched "Nu'Keese Richardson arrest report" and found it in three minutes. They ask the name of the individual, city and state. I don't care to read it, so I didn't pay the 30 bucks, but...

WEll, well, well, I guess he didnt know there were drugs in the car, we know he wasnt out after curfew since Lame is to stupid to have a curfew. He was just hanging with his buddies and was oblivious to what was happening, yeah right. We have learned this is acceptable behavior at UThug, always has, always will. .Keep in mind that all the trouble has come from Freshman on this team, so the caliber of person Lame and his overpaid asst. coaches are recruiting, further shows that the only thing they care about is trying to put a winning product on the field, having trouble with that as well. UThug the tradition continues..........

Doesnt surprise me one bit. Is anyone honetsly stupid enough to beleive this boy didnt know what the other two crips were doing? Come on, give me a break!! Wise ass Kiffin is nervous about having something happen that hasn't happened sinnce 1984 and thats a Big Blue Victory. Kiffin is a joke, he has come into the league running his fat mouth and not backing it up at all. But with Tony Robinson, Travis Henry, Jamal Lewis et al standing out as role models, its no wonder these assclowns acted like they did. At least wehn you go to Tennessee, you are getting used to wearing the prison orange.

47 - Shannon - Take a pill and clam down! I didn't threaten you. I stated that your blog reminded me of the movie. Don't live in my Mom's basement, although it sounds like you have had that experience. My girlfriend has already use the clown bit on me, so your words mean nothing. How in the heck you arrived at the opinion that I was talking trash is beyond me. I guess that if I was a TN fan, I would be mad too.

    Pathetic.

    Lane Kiffin is pathetic.

Read the report (the police report) and THINK.

Football is a game. Playing football at the college level is a privilege.

Prediction: After the regular season ends (which ever way it goes) "fans" will start talking about how good it is to be back in a "bowl" game.

Fact: People with intelligence (some of whom may have graduated form the University of Tennessee) will realize that LK is a fraud ("gimme the money") and Janzen ("we got to go now") is a thug.

    R.I. P. UT integrity.

Thanks to the the real UT players who happen to (a) be students and (b) not be thugs.

Good God what has UT done!???

42 - Shannon - Your post reminds me of the movie a Chrismas Carol where the bully is telling his pray, "You going to cry now, cry, cry, cry. You know what happened next? If not watch the movie, it is shown about a million times, at this time of year.

bigorange55.....I see where your coming from on post #34, but simple saliva and hair tests can determine recent use and If he just failed a test, all you have to do is compare the old ng/ml levels to the new test to determine if he's been using....Yeah, smoking weed isn't that big of a deal, but it's still against the rules and dirty players shouldn't be playing in my opinion.

Heck, I say start doing a little recruiting in the prisons. These guys do weight training, they are in bed early and they know how to pull off a stick up without causing any problems. TN knows how to handle ACT tests results.
