Gators avoiding SEC talk, focusing on stretch run

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Top-ranked Florida has clinched a spot in the Southeastern Conference championship game. Just don’t expect the Gators to talk about it.

Coach Urban Meyer would prefer that his players don’t even think about it, especially with four games remaining before the league title game.

Florida’s challenge the rest of the way, beginning Saturday against struggling Vanderbilt, is to stay motivated and avoid a letdown.

The Gators insist it won’t be a problem.

They have the nation’s longest winning streak (18) and are coming off their most complete game in more than a month, a 41-17 victory against Georgia that gave the Gators a much-needed boost heading into the stretch run.

Vanderbilt, meanwhile, has lost five in a row and is switching quarterbacks.

Rick Z is a child who's internet access needs to be monitored by his parents! 10 year olds should have some limitations when dealing with adults.

The Gators look like a team with a destiny. That destiny looks like a second consectutive National Championship!

    It's the American Dream.
You work your ass off and fight your way to the top while you pick up support along the way. You beat the best and now newcomers want a piece of you. Then when you take on all 'comers, you become critcized for not consistently beating them into submission enough, and/or your 'style points' aren't as good as others.
I've followed Florida football 43 years and played Florida football. For years, season after season, the Gators (arguably) had one of the toughest schedules in the country. Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Tennessee, Miami and FSU -were always revolving in the top 10... while others like the ACC hid in the weeds ready to upset them, ...and the rest of the SEC teams were not gimmies, either! Going back to their inception, the Gators first fielded a varsity football team in the fall of 1906. They were the ONLY team in the SEC to not win a championship and their schedules were determined years in advance, without knowing who's going to be a top team when the game is played. Since 1991, the Gators have won 8 SEC championships, and 3 national championships (1996, 2006, 2008). The Gators have won more games than any other college football team in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as "Division I-A") since 1990. It's widely accepted that the Gator's earned their way to the top and we've also know that staying #1 and at the top, is tougher than any other position along the way! Every team you face will play their best to beat you. Critics, clueless wannabee's try to pick you apart, like they're experts at the game. The reality is: they have not earned that right and are not even worthy enough to wash any Gator's uniform, because they have not been, nor will they ever be, in their shoes. The people who were waving you forward and on your coat tail, are now turning against you, trying to tear you apart. The Gator Nation is tough! We've had to be ... we earned it! When we want your opinion, we'll give it to you! GO GATORS!!

sergetheroux - it's funny that UF is in the weakest of the SEC division when UF kicks the ass of the best in your division. UF doesn't need to play anyone but the best in your division if it continues to hand them their asses in a sack. The SEC is in the unique position of having multiple teams capable of winning the National Championship. USC, Ohio State, and the top teams of every other conference have nothing but patsies for CONFERENCE games, never mind the Div II non-conference opponents.

Thug is right! It's time for everyone to understand that the biggest injustice of all is the BCS!!!! Florida is ranked No. 1 despite playing weak non-conference teams. Florida hasn’t played a non-conference game outside the state of Florida since the BCS was created and had only two outside Gainesville in the past five seasons. The only major non-conference team on the long-term schedule is fading Florida State. The Gators will play South Florida in 2010 and 2015, but other than that, it’s straight sisters of the poor. The non-conference is meaningless to the Gators’ title hopes … unless they lose. So why risk it? “I don’t plan on changing the way we schedule,” Meyer said last summer.

Imagine the fairness of this scenario... BSU beat Oregon in week 1. Both teams may go on and win out the season. Oregon is guaranteed a BCS berth, while BSU's fate is left in the hands of a terribly flawed system that is quite possibly a violation of Federal Sherman Anti-trust Laws, and may get passed over for TCU. How do you feel about that?

Who cares if Florida beats up on these patsies and win 2-3 tough games? Even if they lose one, they’ll most likely play for the title anyway due to the flaws in the system. This isn’t scheduling cowardice on Meyer's part, it’s what passes for BCS intelligence. If you’re a big-name program, it’s foolish to prove yourself outside of the mandated league games. A monster showdown might be fun to play in, but it isn’t proportionately rewarded by either the voters or the computers. All it does is open you up to a loss, an injury or an emotional letdown. You’re best served staying home and playing patsies.

LET"S GET THIS SETTLED ON THE FIELD!

Thug - Don't let these guys get to you. They can't handle having anyone, but the team/conference they pull for, being recognized. I feel bad for them - they were those kids that always had an excuse or would look for a diversion.

When the teacher would take them to task for not having their homework done, they'd point out that you had gum in your mouth. Most people grow out of it. Some people have a difficult time growing up and facing reality.

C'mon man. Louisiana-Monroe, Wyoming, Texas Tech, UTEP, Colorado, Oklahoma, Missouri, Oklahoma St., UCF, Baylor, Kansas, and Texas A & M. The team with the best record on Texas's schedule is Oklahoma St. Their 6-2. You have to be out of your mind if you think this is a tough schedule! Louisiana--Monroe? Wyoming? UTEP? UCF??? Never mind the very easy conference games against Texas Tech (absolutely no defense), Colorado, and Baylor (when's the last time they went to a moderately big bowl game)? Even Missouri and Kansas are having down years. You should take a look at the teams you are promoting instead of running your mouth about Florida's schedule. The Texas schedule is a joke!!! Let's face it, if Florida had 1 or 2 losses nobody would even be talking about their schedule. But since they haven't lost the only way people can attack them is to say they have a cream puff schedule or that the referees give them wins. You just can take it. Florida has 2 national titles in the last 3 years and they could add another this year. Instead of creating this fantasy world where Texas and USC have such tough schedules, ( they don't ), you should just accept the reality. Florida has a QB that knows how to win games. They have the personnel on each side of the ball to compete with anybody. For the umpteenth time, nobody cares what Tebow will do in the NFL! He plays for the Gators right now. We are concerned with what he does this season at Florida, not with what he may or may not do in the NFL. Colt McCoy won't make it in the NFL. He won't be able to handle the defenses he will have to face. Remember Chris Simms? He can't even start for the Bucs! Where's Major Applewhite? Vince Young is the only QB that Texas has put out in a long time that can even start for an NFL team. That may or may not last. Colt McCoy's success at Texas has come at the price of a weak conference schedule. He won't fare any better than Tebow in the NFL. Get off your soapbox and come back down to earth.

sergetheroux - Actually, Troy is in the Sunbelt Conference and the Sunbelt Conference in in the FBS (Division 1), and I think that LSU is currently ranked in the top 10.

One can only admire the way you say what you want and then tell everyone that you won't read any response. That's the true sign of someone who is sure that all of their points valid.

There you are RickZ. I couldn't find you anywhere after your little "Busted Trojans" got their asses handed to them a second time. You should stay on the USC sites. Florida, regardless of their schedule, is still undefeated, while your pitiful little team already has 2 losses, (with more on the way). UCLA will give them a 3rd loss. Florida will still play for the BCS title. You suck just like the Trojans do. Get off the Gator sites, we don't won't a loser like you on here. Every week your team looks a little worse than the week before, while Florida remains unbeaten. You, like the Trojans, are all mouth. For once just accept how pitiful you and your USC team are and shut the f$#% up! GO GATORS!!!!!

UF scheduled not 1, not 2, but 3 Div-II teams to open their season (whatever the new name for tier two schools are I forgot). That is the weakest move I have seen by any Top 10 team. 3 Div-II games? Really? That is how you claim to be the best in the nation? A least one of those 3 games could have been a real team. They pay 800k for teams like Charelston Southern to show up, get waxed by 50 and go home. That is as weak as it gets. No doubt the SEC is the top conference across the board. But UF is not playing the SEC's best teams. They are in the weaker of the two divisions, and still play these junk schools? They will not even take on an in-state Miami that starts a very young team. If it was not for the NCAA and media love affiar with a QB who will be lucky to play FB (fullback for those that forgot the position is still played) in the NFL, they would not be seen as the nations 'best.' UF is loaded with talent, but they are cheating the system with this schedule. UT is not my team, but I do not understand why a team with a real QB and equal talent across the board has not jumped a UF team that has shown no true national domination by playing a darkhorse or beating more ranked/quality teams than UT. Instead they play creampuff teams early, then "Focus on the stretch run?" I hope Bama or FSU brings this to an end. UT, Bama, and even Oregon have made their statement by playing tougher schedules. UF is no #1 - do they even deserve #2 until Bama stumbles, or UF steps up and beats them in the Conference game? As long as Tebow keeps stiking bible verses to his face I guess no one will dare say anything. There was once a time that a team was measured by the quality of their play and their wins; not by the media hype and ESPN highlights. Do not bother attacking me, I will not be reading any responses or engaging anyone through a message board. The games will be played, the results will bear out the facts. Enjoy Saturday true football fans, the NCAA will soon destroy what is left of football. The NFL has all but done in the next level all ready.

rick z - In Scotto's post, #34, he was using something known as sarcasm. Relax, rick. Breath deeply and call your psychiatrist and let out your pent up frustration surely caused by your parents incestual relationship that culminated with your birth. Be sure to let them know that you are projecting your shame on to others as that might help, also.

Once again, good luck to you.

rick z - Although I doubt that the SEC will win all seven or eight bowl games that they compete in this bowl season , I should point out that schott236 (#25) actually referred to bowl games in his post prior to stating that they would win all their games. You should have realized that were you the exceptionally literate individual that you attempt to portray yourself.

Please realize that when you hurl the same lame insult post after post that it no longer produces the effect that you intend. It merely makes you look like someone with a limited vocabulary and a defective thought process. You're very good at that, though.
