Utah won’t name QB until game time
SALT LAKE CITY (AP)—Utah coach Kyle Whittingham says he won’t say who will start at quarterback until game time Saturday when the 17th-ranked Utes host New Mexico.
Terrance Cain started the first seven games, but Whittingham replaced him with freshman Jordan Wynn in the third quarter last week against Wyoming. Wynn helped the Utes (7-1, 4-0 Mountain West) rally to 19 straight points in the win.
Whittingham said Monday that he won’t name a starter this week because he doesn’t want to let the winless Lobos (0-8, 0-4) know who they’ll be facing.

Cain's postives:
1) mobile
2) throw's relatively few INTs
3) has calm deameanor
4) 7+ games experience
Cain's negatives:
1) weak downfield arm
2) poor track record of finishing drives, and poor 3rd down conversion rate. Evidence in the Oregon rate, which I watched, three Oregon turnovers in their territory were not converted.
Weakness number two is the biggest reason why I would play Wynn over Cain.
However, Cain did play well at times and the Ute program did benefit from this.
a) The OT drive against AF, he threw a nice pass to Reed on 3rd down.
b) played well in the final minutes against Colorado State.
The Utes need more of a consistent QB.

against Wyo, but threw a couple of balls that could (should) have been picks. With the
TCU game coming up, I think Whittingham will start Cain, but Wynn will play, especially
if the offense stagnates.
Either way, Go Utes!!

Terrance Cain has been too inconsistent. His poor play was a major reason why the Utes lost to Oregon.
All season long, the Utes with Cain at QB have not been able to score consistently. With this kind of play, they will have little to no chance to win against TCU in 2 weeks.

Not much to talk about in Utah anymore, since Urban and Alex Smith jammed...............

Whit has been overly secretive this year. I think that he's just trying to keep these kids focused, which is what his job is. They have a HUGE target on their back with the combination of last year's performance, all of the of-season BCS banter AND the nations longest winning streaks (both regular season and bowls). That's a lot of pressure already.
All that being said, he keeps saying that the starter doesn't need any distractions before the game, but I think throwing the kid on the field with all this suspense is even more pressure. I expect to see a few adrenaline spiked over-throws early, unless they just use Asiata on the ground until QB's nerves settle.

Although a good coach, Whit is one of the most paranoid coaches you will find anywhere.
