Longhorns starting to talk about ‘national’ goals

  • Print

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—Two months ago, Texas would have avoided any direct talk of playing for a national title.

Back when the No. 2 Longhorns (8-0) were initially scheduled to play Central Florida (5-3), anything so bold would have been waved off as too much, too soon.

Now, however, the Longhorns know what’s in front of them if they keep winning, starting Saturday.

“This becomes a national game now,” Texas coach Mack Brown said. “If it were at the first of the season, it would not have been talked about a lot, but if you look at it now, we are in the mix at the end where everything we do is important. This game takes on a lot more importance than it would have if it were the third game of the year.”

Texas is sitting at No. 2 in the Bowl Championship series standings and No. 1 in the Big 12 South with a four regular-season games left before the conference championship game.

Win out and Texas books passage to the BCS title game in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 7. That’s a much better feeling for the Longhorns than this time last year, when they were coming off their only loss of the season at Texas Tech.

“We know that feeling,” quarterback Colt McCoy said. “We don’t want to feel it again.”

Even with the talk of national goals, Brown said he senses a sharper focus for an opponent Texas is favored to beat by five touchdowns.

“The freshmen feel like they’ve got forever here. The seniors understand that bunch last year missed an opportunity of a lifetime to win a conference and national championship because of one game,” Brown said.

“In fact, a couple of the seniors have said, ‘You’ve got the rest of your life, we’ve got four weeks. Keep your mouth shut and play.’ That’s kind of been the message around here,” Brown said.

McCoy and the other seniors also remember a tough game with Central Florida in 2007, when the Longhorns escaped Orlando with a 35-32 win. They’ve also noted how the Golden Knights had six sacks in a 27-7 loss to Miami on Oct. 17. The Golden Knights were in that game until Miami pulled away late.

Another effort like those and Central Florida could hobble Texas’ championship march on the national stage.

“We got up a little bit and never put it away (in 2007). We just let them hang around and hang around. We had to make some plays at the end to actually win the game,” McCoy said.

Brown is familiar with the tough defenses that Central Florida coach George O’Leary has put on the field over the years. The two used to square off in the ACC when Brown was at North Carolina and O’Leary was coaching at Georgia Tech.

“That’s the way they beat you, so you can’t let them hang around,” Brown said.

For the Golden Knights, the key is to find ways to stand up to the Texas defense that ranks No. 1 in the country against the run and has surrendered only four touchdowns in the last three games.

“Texas has all the pieces in place to make a run at the national championship,” O’Leary said.

Texas had already scheduled activities at the game to be a tribute to veterans, ceremonies that are sure to take on a more somber tone after the killings at Fort Hood, the sprawling Army post that is about 60 miles north of Austin. The ceremonies will include a military flyover with pilots who graduated from Texas.

Brown visited troops in Iraq last summer.

“We have also asked our players to dedicate the game to somebody, if they feel the need to, who is in their lives and is in the military,” Brown said the day before the Fort Hood shootings. “We would like for them to play for them this weekend.”

UCF shut Texas out in the 1st and only let them score 7 in the 3rd. How can an unranked team do this to the greatest team to play football? Because they are imposters who constantly play weak teams. Alabama played and beat 4 ranked teams and 2 of those were top 10 teams. Alabama and the SEC....simply the best!

I'm sick and tired of Tim Tblow, yea you read it T Blow. Next, Boise is not a state. Most school's know whom they are playing for the next five or more years. Boise finds teams as they go. Just shut up and hope you don't have to play TEXAS, and if you do. try to change it. How's that hope and change working out for you?

The Big 12 is the most overrated conference in college football. They don't play any tough non conference teams. Oklahoma played BYU and Lost. BYU cmon. Mac Brown is a hell of a politician and he is a good football coach but look at their strength of schedule it is a joke. Wake up people and Longhorn fans your team is overrated they are not better than Bama or Florida. Hell they aren't even better than Boise or Oregon just to name a few. God Bless the families of the victims and the solders involved at Ft. Hood and to all serving to protect us. Help save college vote and vote for a Playoff System.

Well said Melissa!! One more thing for Robert. Please tell me you don't still live in this country. You obviously are not happy here and need to move to....... well, somewhere else other than the USA. I guess maybe that is one bad thing about us Americans, that fact that we can't just kick your stupid, hatred filled, ignorant ass out of here and ship you off to a deserted island somewhere with all of the other idiots just like you. There aren't that many of you but there would be enough to populate a small island. And then maybe we could just "accidently" drop a bomb that we were testing or something. Or not, but hey it sounded like a good idea.

HOOK' EM HORNS!! PASADENA HERE WE COME!!! GOD BLESS THE USA!!!!

Texas is the best damn team out there people are just afraid to admit it. It's not hard to go undefeated when you play unranked high schools like florida.

EVERYONE-- stop commenting about Robert. He is a idiot and this is just what he wants, an argument. Robert is clearly clueless when it comes to college football (which is what this site is for) and for that matter has no idea about the military, the USA, and what it all stands for. By the way Robert, the military is what keeps your stupid ass safe on a daily basis, maybe you forgot that part. Why don't you try serving to see what its like before you make retarded and ignorant comments like that. You clearly need to read up on your history first before you start preaching (or fast typing as you say). Bush did what he had to do after we were ATTACKED. Did everything go exactly as planned? No, thats why its called war. We did what was necessary to again, keep your stupid ass safe and playing with your toys. You should be thanking the military. You may not agree with everything and that is fine, another great thing about the USA, but do so in a proper manner and show some respect and intelligence.

OK, now on to college football. Since you spoke mostly about ou and their coaching (which Stoops is one of the best by the way) i can only assume you are a bitter ou fan. I am a TEXAS fan, and trust me I have been there. However, get over it. You guys lost and thats thats (for the 4 year by the way - HAHA). TX vs Florida/Alabama in the BCS championship would be a great game. DEFENSE would be the talk as it would probably be low scoring, but you never know. Either way, TEXAS is the more complete team of the 3 and has just as good of a chance to win as they do, if not a better chance I think.

HOOK' EM HORNS (ou still sucks)!! GO TEXAS!, GO USA!!, SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!!!

Just looked at the Texas schedule. It shows how bad the BCS is, Texas should have points taken away for the schedule they have played! Those games are no more than controlled scrimmages. They certainly will be fresh for a bowl game. When you only have to get up for one game, you have a good shot at winning it. They don't face the long grind of the season. A 10 team playoff would expose both Texas and Florida.

Let's settle this on the field instead of getting frustrated in chat rooms.

What is the going rate for a chance @ the BCS title game? Its probally in the millions and there R certain programs that just can't come up with that kind of cash. Maybe its not just the cash, it could be favors also of some sort. Everyone knows this, EXAMPLE: When GOV A Swartznegger said "I would never take a bribe cause I have lots of money" check the archive about this statement. But that doesen't rule out FAVORS FOR CLOUT!..............like push a bill thru that is a huge favor for my friends down in "loviedoveyville" in Marin county.......

Travis, what they did in Ft. Hood is indeed a sady day! I live in the neighboring state of Arkansas, not 40 mile from Texarkana, have family in east Texas, yes, this is indeed sad. Not only sad for Texas, but sad for our country, I think it wouldn't be a bit out of order for people throughout America to offer up prayers for the victims and their families, Ft. Hood, the state of Texas and the nation, stuff like this takes the joy out of Saturday football.

You guys posting on here make me proud to be an American, and most of all, A TEXAN. America is the Greatest country of all and I have MUCH LOVE for my home state of TEXAS. I wrote the passage about my neighbor because I wanted everyone to just stop and admire the hard work of our troops. Many people just hear about troops fighting for our country but dont literally take into mind that they are "FIGHTING FOR OUR COUNTRY". PLEASE guys, take a minute out of your' day and say a prayer for our lost troops on Fort Hood AND our troops over seas. I personally am joining the Army come January and am looking forward to protecting my "brothers" as well as my country. GO USA and GO TEXAS. Thank you all for your support, you make me PROUD to be an American.

Robert, son, Texas definitely has its flaws but there are a few things Texans are good at.. 1. Football. I don't know where you get we don't play good against great teams. We beat the Best. Team. Evar. in 2005. We beat Michigan the year before. We beat Oklahoma last year, you know the team that played a decent game in the NC against Florida. We've also beaten Ohio State twice in the last 5 years, granted, not as impressive as they once were but still no cupcake. Texas plays good football. 2. Music. Stevie Ray Vaughn. Enough said, but you could increase the list by a hundred easy. 3. Not taking crap off of whiny punkass twerps that like to run their mouths.

I would guess you left Texas because you were a whisker away from getting a mudhole stomped in your ass. You just stay wherever the hell you are and don't worry about coming back to Texas. We don't miss you. And I'd watch your mouth if I were you, there's Longhorns all over this country and I'd be willing to bet the last tooth you knocked out ended up under your pillow.

Robert B, 116, "Texas couldn't even score a td against Florida or Alabama. " Well, if we are just making asinine statements, then Florida or Alabama couldn't even score a FG against Texas. lol! You obviously know NOTHING about college football if you have any actual belief or sincerity in your post. Texas is year-in and year-out one of the best offenses in college football. This year, they have a top-10 in almost all categories defense (against offenses that are rated higher than most offenses in the SEC). Further, their D is attacking and forces a ton of turnovers. If you think FL or ALA will dominate Texas and win in a blowout, I'll take your wager and your money. The MNC game will be close, but my BELIEF is that Texas has the offense to score enough points on any defense in the country that their D will win the game for them. Until the game is played, however, all of our speculation is hot air. Especially speculation like yours that is based entirely in ignorance.

TideMachine1, Being a Texas fan, I obviously like your matchup for the BCS champ game. I used to pull for Bama when Texas was down and I still like them but I think your coach is a creep. Can't yall lure somebody with a personality to coach and still be just as good...surely there's a coach out there that would love to go to such a traditionally good program that the fans could be proud of and who didn't make you worry about what he might say at any given moment.

Robert your are the one problem with freedom of speech, it has no stupidity clause....Texas is a great football team as are Florida and Alabama....your comments about our military are appalling..things happen in war that no one is proud of, it is a cold fact of war..but to say our military are trained baby killers is out of line..i personaly would like to have you shipped to a country where they kill people for something as common here as adultry, or in your case plain stupidity...and see how much you love life there...maybe then you might have a little respect for what we done for iraqi people..yes many still value their traditions but atleast one day they will have the right to invoke and practice the values and way of life they wish...not some over religious fanatical forcing them to pray or worship his god, live by his rules or die...you sir are a moron and a mochery of the definition of freedom of speech..

Travis you are wrong also, Oregan is a very good football team and as they played last week they could rival anyone in the country, that is why college football is so great, it can produce some of the greatest perfomaces from these great atheletes and on any given saturday, a lesser team can prevail...now thats why i love colllege football...and robert is an idiot and a disgrace of a football fan...i am a die hard WVU fan win or loose, cant say that for all mountaineer fans either, but i also love Texas and Alabama and Florida as well as Oregan and many others..however i think so many fans have lost the respet of competition..and that is sad...love your team, but respect the others..those kids all work hard to entertain us each week and to disrespect any of them just for the team colors they wear is abomination, please gentleman, have you opinions, but NEVER direspect our military troops that keep us free to watch football or our young atheletes that still play for the love of the game....keep america great, stop proving to the world, our ignorance..

Gary M. That's funny brother! Great minds think alike..It's scary to think there are people out there that are so clueless and out of touch with reality as...well I'm not going to mention names. They must listen to the mainstream media and believe everything they hear without thinking for themselves and realizing there may be an another side to the slanted view of the story that's being reported. Maybe the world will end in 2012 when Obama realizes he's done and goes scorched earth. Maybe those superior SEC teams can solve this problem too.

Why else would the feel the need to build up their teams and trash other conferences even after winning the last 3 BCS titles. Or maybe that's the only thing they have to hang their hat on in their boring little lives. Oops, I just stooped to their level. Sorry! HOOK EM HORNS!
