‘Bama-Florida: Waiting to rematch

  • Print

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP)—The much-anticipated rematch is set: Alabama against Florida for the Southeastern Conference championship and possibly a berth in the national title game on the line.

The game itself, however, isn’t for another month and the Tide and Gators have plenty of important work to do before they meet at the Georgia Dome on Dec. 5.

The third-ranked Crimson Tide joined the top-ranked Gators in the SEC championship game after outlasting No. 9 LSU 24-15 on Saturday, erasing any season-ending drama in the league except whether its two powerhouses can remain perfect.

Florida (9-0, 7-0 Southeastern Conference) had already secured its invitation before Saturday’s 27-3 victory over Vanderbilt, the Gators’ 19th consecutive win.

Florida and Alabama (9-0, 6-0) have seemed on a collision course for a rematch since the Gators’ SEC championship game win over the Tide last season.

Hardly anybody had expected the Tide to be in that position entering the 2008 season. Winning the SEC West was expected for this Alabama team.

Florida knows that feeling in the East.

“I think this team had a totally different challenge from last year’s team,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “I’m proud of the way they managed and handled it. They have to be good because they want to be good.

“Last year’s team had a different motive. They wanted to improve. I think there’s a huge difference in that. These guys showed a maturity and consistency in getting to where they are now.”

The teams haven’t quite steamrolled through the SEC, especially offensively. LSU (7-2, 4-2) took a 15-10 lead into the fourth quarter against ‘Bama before Julio Jones caught a 73-yard touchdown pass from Greg McElroy, Trent Richardson ran in the 2-point attempt and Leigh Tiffin booted field goals of 20 and 40 yards.

Before that was a 12-10 win over Tennessee when Terrence Cody blocked two field goals in the fourth quarter. That made the South Carolina game seem like a breeze. But even then, Alabama scored a late touchdown to remove the drama in a 20-6 win.

Florida’s offense has moved in fits and starts most of the season, and it was more of the same against the Commodores. Tim Tebow was sacked four times, and two of the offense’s three touchdowns followed Vandy miscues deep in its own territory.

Mackenzi Adams threw an interception that led to Jeff Demps’ 25-yard TD run on a fourth-and-1 play, and punter Brett Upson mistakenly touched his knee to the ground fielding a low snap that set up Tebow’s lone TD pass—an 8-yarder to David Nelson on third-and-4 that slipped through Riley Cooper’s fingers.

Florida finished with 375 yards, 124 of them came in the fourth quarter.

The defense picked up the slack by not allowing a touchdown for the fifth time this season, even without suspended linebacker Brandon Spikes.

But post-game questions centered around the team’s offensive struggles. The Gators have scored 30 points in just two of seven SEC games.

“We just didn’t have the big-play production,” Gators coach Urban Meyer said. “We had four sacks and we didn’t have any home run shots. It’s always a concern. You’re probably concerned with something every game you play. We have to get some production out of the offense, a little more production. We’re working at it.”

No rush. You’ve got a few weeks, coach. Only the struggling Gamecocks, Florida International and Florida State stand in the way of Florida’s perfect regular season.

The Tide needs wins over Mississippi State, Chattanooga and Auburn—all of whom figure to be sizable underdogs—to complete a second straight perfect regular season.

That would almost certainly leave Alabama with a national title shot in Pasadena, Calif., if Saban’s team can manage to beat the Gators this time.

“That was a goal we had,” tailback Mark Ingram said of winning the West. “Hopefully we’ll get to Pasadena as well.”

Saban wasn’t particularly inclined to savor the SEC West title quite yet with a team that has bigger ambitions, citing his 24-hour rule for celebrating wins.

“We really have a lot of games to play,” Saban said.

The way the Alabama and Florida defenses are playing, a repeat of last year’s 31-20 Florida win seems unlikely. Both are among the top four in the nation.

The kickers have been busier than either team would like, too. Alabama’s Leigh Tiffin leads the nation in field goals per game (2.56) while Florida’s Caleb Sturgis is fifth at 1.89.

“A few times in the red zone we left with three points,” Gators receiver David Nelson said. “That’s just devastating to the offense. You have a good drive going down the field, get in the red zone and leave with a field goal. We will take three points any time we can get them, but at the same time, we feel like we should score touchdowns on each drive.”

Nevertheless, both teams have a shot at moving to 10-0.

“That’s the best thing about 9-0,” Meyer said.

STARPOWER, Tebow has just what he had last year, HARVIN, did not play against Bama in the SECCG, he was hurt, and returned for the BCSCG, so the Gators have just what they had last year, just more experience, anyway, should be a barnburner, good luck, see ya in ATLANTA, GO GATORS, REPEAT

#230 chriswisdom305 - Lot of pressure you are leaving for Tebow. He needs a little better support group (like last year)......don't have it. BAMA will take this game

#231 DaTrueChikBrat...........you don't have to defend your schedule... You play who you are given as a team and get rated by some of the best and most knowledgeable people in sports. You land where you land. You have no control except to control the win against the team that is front of you on any given Sat. Let the others whine and cry and squirm and bit*h. It never changes a thing. My advice to them is just win out and see where you land.

See, now that is where it begins to get real hard.................. Only the best make it..

IT amazes me how everyone talks about the Gators easy schedule. Has anyone ever thought that to get to the National Championship and Win! the NC, Fla has to play the best the country has to offer. This year for example we must play the #2 team in the country in the SEC Championship game just to get to Texas in the NC game??? Easy schedule my ass. Go great Gators and make it 3 out of 4 NC's in the last 4 years. Don't see any other teams in the nation that can say that!!

Me thinks all of you are just jealous. lol lol lol

bulldog, I was at that bowl game. Michigan hardly beat the crap out of Florida. The game wasn't over until the last 2 minutes of the game. Michigan Seniors busted their butts to beat a Florida team led primarily by Sophmores. Gator fans walked out of there without a win but with pride in the knowledge that great things lay ahead for that group of kids.

Quote from ESPN: "It was over when... Heisman trophy winner Tim Tebow was held to a total of 4 yards in the Gators' final two possessions."

    It went like this:

    FIRST QUARTER MICH FLA
TD 10:59 Mario Manningham 21 Yd Pass From Chad Henne (K.C. Lopata Kick)
    Drive: 11 plays, 94 yds, 4:01 7 0
TD 02:37 Percy Harvin 10 Yd Pass From Tim Tebow (Joey Ijjas Kick)
    Drive: 7 plays, 59 yds, 3:04 7 7
    SECOND QUARTER MICH FLA
TD 14:48 Andre Caldwell 18 Yd Pass From Tim Tebow (Joey Ijjas Kick)
    Drive: 3 plays, 29 yds, :56 7 14
TD 09:51 Mike Hart 3 Yd Run (K.C. Lopata Kick)
    Drive: 12 plays, 56 yds, 4:57 14 14
TD 00:08 Adrian Arrington 1 Yd Pass From Chad Henne (K.C. Lopata Kick)
    Drive: 11 plays, 62 yds, 2:31 21 14
    THIRD QUARTER MICH FLA
TD 12:50 Mike Hart 1 Yd Run (K.C. Lopata Kick)
    Drive: 7 plays, 37 yds, 2:10 28 14
TD 07:55 Tim Tebow 1 Yd Run (Joey Ijjas Kick)
    Drive: 10 plays, 56 yds, 4:55 28 21
TD 01:26 Andre Caldwell 14 Yd Pass From Tim Tebow (Joey Ijjas Kick)
    Drive: 8 plays, 80 yds, 3:11 28 28
    FOURTH QUARTER MICH FLA
    FG 12:16 K.C. Lopata 37 Yd
    Drive: 10 plays, 50 yds, 4:10 31 28
TD 05:49 Percy Harvin 10 Yd Run (Joey Ijjas Kick)
    Drive: 5 plays, 34 yds, 2:30 31 35

WOW...how are the officials going to call this one ? Usually both these teams get all the calls their way, even when they would have gotten beaten..right Saban and Alabama and Teabow and Florida ?? Is the loser going to say that the officials were in favor of the other team, like they have against your opponents the entire year ?? This ought to be a great loss for someone. I can't wait to hear the excuses from both teams....for once, the shoe will be on the other foot for at least one of you. I wish it could be both of you. The ncaa has always protected you guys with the officiating always being on your side, taking touchdowns away from other teams and giving all the points to you. I am so curious to see who will finally yell bloody murder. You are both sh*t teams and poor sportsman. It's pathetic that the nation knows how you and your teams are favored in the standings, schedules, games and officiating.

Ummm schedules are made years in advance, and we dont need to go out of conference to be challenged. Dont talk to me about Ohio States schedule ever, with teams like Indiana, Akron, and Northwestern on their schedule year after year. I hope Ohio State ends up paired up with an SEC team at the end of the year, then we shall see what kind of numbers Terelle Pryor has. I wasnt knocking NAVY, they have a legit team, but they not SEC good. The only team NAVY ever locks heads with from the SEC is Vandy, which is our weakest link and doesnt say much.

Out of conference, Out of conference. Thats all you Big-10 and Pac-10 weinies can say. How many of you have made the trip to Alabama, Florida or Texas? You set your schedule, YOU can make the calls...does it happen? No, because losing to them once a year is more than you want....I dont know if Alabama will make it to the NC, but it will be a good game. Florida? Dont know but it would be a good game. Dont know if Bama or the Gators will win the SEC, but it will be a good game. I think I would rather spend my time watching college football than worrying about "what if" and "How come".

To OSUbuxsux, the day the sec becomes as weak as the BIG10 or PAC10 they'll go out and schedule an out of conference game. Until that happens there is no reason for teams from the SEC to do so. They don't have to try to impress the voters by playing Boise St. or USC, they can impress them by running the table in the SEC. By the way if you put Arkansas up againt Navy or OSU they would win both games and seeing how they are an average team, what does that make Navy and OSU?

I do not like OSU but how can you trash them saying they have not played anyone besides USC. The question should be who has Florida played out of conference? Why won't Florida play USC? Or even Boise State? Also to the remark they almost lost to Navy Florida almost lost to Arkansas an average team.
