McCoy’s big game starts Heisman push

  • Print

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—Texas quarterback Colt McCoy needed a Heisman Trophy-type game.

How about 304 yards passing, 175 yards rushing and five total touchdowns in a nationally televised win over a bitter rival?

He needed a Heisman moment.

How about a 65-yard touchdown run that evoked memories of Vince Young in Texas’ national championship season of 2005?

In a Heisman race that until this weekend seemed rather ho-hum and wide-open, McCoy had the kind of game that could break him out of the pack in the No. 3 Longhorns’ 49-39 win at Texas A&M on Thursday night.

“I don’t get to vote for the Heisman, but if anyone has a better Heisman moment than that, I’d like to see it,” Texas coach Mack Brown said.

The next week should provide plenty of highlights among the top contenders for Heisman voters to compare.

Running back Mark Ingram and No. 2 Alabama played rival Auburn on Friday. Tim Tebow and top-ranked Florida play rival Florida State on Saturday in his final home game with the Gators. Alabama and Florida meet next week for the SEC title.

Clemson and all-purpose standout C.J. Spiller play South Carolina this week before heading to the ACC championship game.

Way out West, Stanford and star running back star running back Toby Gerhart play Notre Dame on Saturday night, a game that could draw a lot of viewers with Irish coach Charlie Weis’ job on the line.

And McCoy gets one more game when Texas plays Nebraska next week for the Big 12 championship. A win there and the Longhorns are headed for the BCS title game.

McCoy got the final Heisman push started with his special game.

After a 2008 season in which he finished runner-up for the Heisman to Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, McCoy endured lots of “what’s wrong?” questions after some early season sputters and misfires.

Even when Texas beat rival Oklahoma 16-13, his biggest play of the day was a touchdown-saving tackle after a fourth-quarter interception.

Since that game, McCoy has turned his so-so season into one of the best in school history.

Over Texas’ last five wins, McCoy has passed for 1,791 yards and 18 touchdowns against two interceptions. His 3,328 total passing yards this season now ranks fourth best in Texas history.

In his highlight play of the season against A&M, McCoy zipped through the middle of the Aggies defense on a called run, shook off a tackler and broke into the open field. He was fast enough to leave behind three tacklers on his 65-yard romp to the end zone.

“I don’t know if I looked slow,” McCoy said. “I felt slow.”

McCoy was in a game where he had to keep making big plays to save the Longhorns from a huge upset. Texas A&M and quarterback Jerrod Johnson ripped the Texas defense for 532 total yards and counter-punched just about every time McCoy seemed to get some room.

“When they’re having a rough night, we’re going to step up,” McCoy said. “We bailed the defense out.”

Texas A&M defensive back Jordan Pugh, one of the A&M tacklers McCoy left behind on the long run, was impressed.

“I think I played (the Heisman trophy winner). He led the team,” Pugh said. “Before the game we talked about how we were going to miss this. After the game, I told him to go get a championship, a Big 12 and national championship.”

By saying the tam should be an easy win for the horns is just plain stupidity. This is one of the oldest rivalies in football counting high school, college or pros. It is a proven fact that you can through the records of either team out the window. These young men have played one another from pop warner through high school. The right team won this year. I hope tam keeps their coach he has gotten his team to play better the last part of the year. He has a QB this coming back that will be making plays that seem imposible. Once again your stupid and as far as the aggys I take my hat off and say gig'em

SEC man, thanks for crediting Texas defense. But do they carry the day? Texas is second only to Boise in points per game in the country and though the defense and special teams have scored points, its not enough to denigrate an offense averaging 451 yds/game.

Dave, lets compare a few stats between McCoy and Pike (and Tebow for good measure):
Completions Pct Pass yds PY/Game Rush yds RY/Game
    Colt McCoy 310 71.8 3328 277.3 368 30.7
    Tony Pike 162 65.1 2048 256 29 3.6
    Tim Tebow 145 65.0 1945 176.8 706 64.2

I'd love to see Tebow and McCoy meet in the championship.

seriously dave..... are you an idiot?? i highly doubt anybody, no matter who they are, says that Colt McCoy is a pathetic QB. Honestly, how can you call him a "pathetic QB?" he's put up amazing numbers.

And for those people who think that the game against A&M was supposed to be a quick and easy battle (ken k), just take a look at Alabama at Auburn. Last minute TD to win. (not trying to tear down Alabama, but if people can say that Texas' game against A&M was ugly, then that win against Auburn was just straight up disgusting.) That being said, it's amazing when a player can put up a great game against the team who's one goal is to destroy you.

David - You need to get some rest dude. Your conclusions are bewildered!!!

Newsflash - and most diehard Gator Fans get this - McCoy is a great QB and had an outstanding game against an in-state rival on Thursday. Possible the Heisman moment needed to push him to th top. If McCoy wins it this year, it would be going to an Athlete that earned it! As to Texas football - I can only hope that Florida wins out as does Texas and that these two stellar teams gewt to face off against each other! Tebow and McCoy in the same game for the NAtionl Championship... Two outstanding defenses and teams that can score at any moment.... I don't think that it could get much better than that this year!

Again, if McCoy get the Heisman this year - then they gave it to an athele that not only deserved it, but stands for what a true athlete should be. He's a good guy and fun to watch! Ingrim had a great year too, but faltered in a key game. If Tebow ignites on FSU, he'll be back in the top of the chase as well. We all know how and why the Heisman goes the way it does... We'll see after the games are played now won't we!

Go Gators... and we're pulling for Texas.

Ken K.......Just my observation........McCoy does more for his team than any qb in college football. Has played three season of football at an extremely high level. McCoy is simply the best qb in the country. He has had a great season. No one else has really stepped up to take the Heisman. Colt is a great kid, and a fine representative of college football. Colt deserves the heisman, no doubt. Ingram did't do anything against auburn, who played well against alabama, but isn't a contender for anything. Everyone is going to be suprised when texas takes down whom ever in the sec steps up to face them in the antional title game. Colt always plays his best in pressure situations. When it comes to crunch time, he gets it done! HOOK EM!!!

Heisman has been going to the Most Popular Player for years. McCoy would be a good pick. He is nice looking and plays on team that the defense usually carries. A nice formula for the Heisman winner. Of course, the Heisman Curse goes with the trophy. As far as a white RB winning, John Cappaletti from Penn State was the last in the early 70's. Unless you count Tebow who is a fullback that throws the ball.

Dave, Scoring the most TDs in college ball history and being the most winningest QB in college ball history is pathetic? How 'bout being 3-0 in bowl games as UT's starter? By the way, he's also 1-0 against the frogs!
Sounds like just another Froggie with an inferiority complex.
Texas does not embarass the Big 12. The Horns are the flagship school of the conference with an awesome record in bowl games, against other power house conference schools, and consitent double digit wins each year. And that's just football. I wont even get into hoops and baseball. Hook 'Em

Carl, Suh is way more ready to make an immediate impact over Berry. Berry is sssssiiiiiicccccckkkkk, so don't think I don't see how great he is. I just watch Suh and see a younger Jay Ratliff, with way more physical attributes to offer. Although, I pray my Cowboys find a way to draft Berry. We need another Darren Woodson, fast.

Ken K, what about the game against atm bothered you so much? I know the Texas D did horribly, but how is that Colt's fault? He only threw for 300+ and ran for another 175. He also was able to run away from three defensive backs for 65 yards. And his season stats are just as impressive, not as good as last year, but no one else is either. Oh well, blind bias' are easy to discover, and people here will have no problem seeing yours. Have a nice day.

First David, a couple is two, not three. Second, McCoy is pathetic? You sound like a little jealous girl who placed runner-up instead of winning the crown. I guess you hate anyone who is not only a good athlete, but good in character as well. Or is this just you screaming because of how bad Mark Ingram did? Oh well, thank God people like you are only relegated to these threads. Enjoy being so angry so early in the morning, maybe its nothing more than a hot cup of coffee can cure. Have a nice day.

    Couple of things.

1st - Colt McCoy shouldn't even be considered for a Heisman. He is a pathetic QB who will be another wash out in the NFL. Pike from Cincy is 10x the QB that McCoy ever could pretend to be. If McCoy gets invited back to New York for the Heisman ceramony, he'll leave in tears again.

2nd - Flordia is going to win their 3rd National Title in 4 years. Hopefully Nebraska beats Texas so the two best teams play for the title, that being TCU and Florida. Texas will just embarass the Big 12 like Ohio State does the Big 10 year after year.

3rd - The only thing the Longhorns are going to hook are themselves in the rear.

I'm sorry, but the Heisman winner should be able to perform against better schools than Tex A&M! For this game to be the cornerstone of Colt's case simply proves the award should go to someone else.

As for the Horns, they're getting to the "championship" game by playing a pansy schedule. When you struggle to beat unranked teams like Oklahoma and A&M and only play one ranked team all year, you don't desereve a shot at the national title.

The best player in the country is Eric Berry from Tennessee....far and away. He will be the number one draftpick and the only player from this group to have a succsessful NFL career. It is just stupid that defensive players don't win the Heisman trophy. Berry is a phenom and will have an impact his first year in the NFL.

haha wow Jim, It sounds like your the racist....It has nothing with him being a white running back, it has everything to do with the team he's on...no one expected stanford to stand out as much as they have this year. Hell i didn't even know they were even a football team, because they've done nothing really big in the past 10 years really. He's actually been a bright spot in college football this year, he has recieved alot of attention and to say he wont be a top 50 pick is ignorant. I'm white and everything you said was just dumb, the reason why "black" athletes are better is genetics and work ethic, when you grow up thinking the way most of my black friends tell me they think, your gonna work harder no doubt. It has nothing to do with race when it comes to who's better, can't win games by doing that. be smart before you post something next time.

All I have to say is Texas will be bringing home 3 pieces of hardware: Big 12 Champion ship, National Championship and Heisman for Colt. T-Blow shouldn't even be mentioned in the top 10 in voting for the Heisman. Case Keenum should be 2nd and Ingram 3rd. From there I don't really care. And to anyone who thinks Texas is not as good as their record shows, Let me remind you of 2005. USC had players ranked 1 & 2 in the heisman race ( Reggie Bush and Matt Leinhardt ). So everyone said USC was going to blow Texas out of the water. HAHAHA. As for Texas losing the National Championship if Colt wins the heisman, I don't see it happening. Florida will lose to FSU knocking them out of the picture, Then turn around and beat Alabama. That will make it a Texas Championship With Texas VS. TCU. TCU is the only team right now who has a legit shot to beat Texas. But that won't happen.

Amber Alot of talk about inferior teams the fact is any team that is undefeated played inferior teams. Superior teams win, inferior teams put losses in their columns. To ask why they dont play top ranked teams is a ridiculous question. Each of them perrrenially play the elite teams. Texas plays Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Kansas State every year, and throws in the Ohio State and others that will schedule with them, all these teams are consitently ranked year after year. Most of them have a national championship trophy in their trophy case. The records this year cannot be calculated when schedules are made, they have to play first. Alabama and Florida do the same year in year out. The cupcakes you refer to schedule with Big Name schools for two reasons, they hope for that one upset that will put them on the national map, secondly they schedule with the big boys to guage their ability and progress working towards the big boy status. An undefeated season is an accomplishment in any league at any level. If you play sports you understand the effort, determination and preparation this takes. The reason Texas, Alabama and Florida are ranked 1,2,3 is because they earn it with each win no matter the opponent. McCoy won 44 games in 4 years, that includes scheduling and winning against superior teams in other conferences in addition to the perrenial conference games. Just ask Ohios State, Michigan, Arizona and USC all top ranked opponenets that met their match in the elite bowl games against Texas. Kudos to TCU, (who beat 3 ranked teams BYU, UTAH, Clemson) Boise State and Cincinnati for their undeafeted season and BCS rankings. Stop bashing elite programs based on hateful and uneducated rhetoric, take up a sport and let me know when you can go a season undefeated:-)

Toby Gerheart deserves it but wont win it cause hes a white running back, same reason he wont be a top 50 pick in the draft. The abject racisim against white RBs/CBs in football is astounding. I wonder if there where no blacks at those positions in the NFL would anyone buy the excusse that there just not good enuff? lol I doubt it, same as that excuse dosent fly about black QBs, shouldent fly for white RBs. Go Toby! Your an inspiration to a whole generation of white kids!
