Texas QB McCoy finding multiple targets

  • Print

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—James Kirkendoll was an early season flash at receiver for Texas. By midseason he seemed to be missing in action.

With the No. 3 Longhorns now in their stretch run to a Big 12 championship, he has re-emerged as a late-season favorite for quarterback Colt McCoy.

And the more targets for McCoy, the winningest quarterback in NCAA history, the more headaches for opposing defense.

McCoy-to-Jordan Shipley is still arguably the best pass-catch combo in the country, but Kirkendoll has 19 catches with three touchdowns in the last three games.

He had eight catches for 86 yards and two scores against Kansas on Saturday night when Texas (11-0, 7-0) clinched the Big 12 South with a 51-20 win. He caught McCoy’s first and last TD passes of the night.

Texas expected many more games like that from Kirkendoll after he caught seven passes for 102 yards and a touchdown in the second game against Wyoming.

Then it was like he just wasn’t there. Kirkendoll played, but caught just 16 passes over the next six games and all but disappeared as a big-play threat.

He got back in the mix three weeks ago with a third-quarter touchdown catch that opened up a 35-3 win over Central Florida.

“I thought James played great” against Kansas, said McCoy, who passed for 396 yards and four touchdowns to get career win No. 43 as a starter.

McCoy’s first pass to Kirkendoll was a 41-yard TD in the first quarter. Kirkendoll beat two defenders on the sideline for an easy pitch-and-catch.

McCoy also threw a 38-yard touchdown to Shipley and hit Malcolm Williams for a 68-yard score in the third. The last touchdown came on a 12-yarder to Kirkendoll who slipped into the corner of the end zone.

“We’re definitely starting to hit on all cylinders. This was our best performance so far,” Kirkendoll said.

His re-connection with McCoy comes at the perfect time.

Texas has a Thanksgiving night game at Texas A&M before the Longhorns play Nebraska in the Big 12 championship on Dec. 5. The Aggies rank among the worst in the country in pass defense.

McCoy likes to have the options.

Shipley, Williams and Kirkendoll all have shown they can pick up first downs with short possession passes or stretch the field with their speed for big-strike touchdowns. Williams had six catches for 103 yards against Kansas.

“We have so much talent. Anybody can go out and have a 100-yard game. Sometimes Colt sees certain people,” Williams said.

“It is big for us. They can’t just key in on Jordan,” McCoy said. “When those guys are playing at that level, and they are getting protection, we are hard to stop.”

Shipley remains McCoy’s favorite target and had 10 catches for 108 yards and a touchdown against Kansas. He now has 91 catches for a school record 1,204 yards this season. He and McCoy have connected for 28 touchdowns over their careers.

“They are probably one of the best combinations in college football history,” Kirkendoll said.

John B.......I only hate the bashers on these threads. Without Texas, OU loses it's luster, as does UT without the Sooners. This rivalry really makes both schools, as does our rivalries with a select couple of other schools. It really bugs me when posters hammer at other schools or it's fan and athletes. It is, after all, a game. The game is fun, the rest is just BS. OU is a great school, I am proud to be both a born and bred Sooner, as well as a Sooner alum. I've said hundreds of times, if I weren't a Sooner, I'd prefer to be a 'horn. The Sooners will be back next year, we'll probably beat UT, (our turn) and I'll still treat the Texas fans with respect. It is the way I like to be treated. Boomer Sooner.

    John B,

Every team has its fair share of fans with class, and those without them. The Longhorns are no different. And then, of course, there are those fans who just deny reality about their team ... good or bad though that reality might be. Hats off to MICK from this Texan. We share more values in common than not with our bordering states.

    Hook'em Horns.

Post 10...Mick...you might be the first Sooner in the last 8 years I can remember praising a deserving Texas team....While I have always believed Sooner fans lacked class you have made me reconsider that opinion...Thanks for your comments...Hookem

Crash69.......post#7.......Let's not forget, that even though they have no big name rb's, Texas has run the ball very well for most of the season. They don't have any real standout backs, but they do have a very, very solid group of running backs. This is the best "committee" of backs I can remember. Texas does with 6 or 8 backs, what most teams do with two. Good luck the rest of the way, 'horns. Boomer Sooner.

As a Longhorn fan, I'm liking what I see for the most part. But ... I'd still like to see a better running game from the RBs. Colt does a pretty good job of scrambling when he has to, and he shows he doesn't just melt under pressure. While Texas ran the ball some against Kansas and Baylor, those teams don't have the kind of D's of Nebraska, Bama and Florida. I also thought the offensive line did a lackluster job against Kansas. You could see Colt getting a little hot about it. That kind of performance won't cut it against the strong defenses comping up. Special teams need to tighten up their act as well. They allowed two long run backs by Kansas.

The whole world talks about the lack of running game in Texas. The thing most people are forgetting is that Colt McCoy can run...just like Tebow... he is a runnin fool when need be ! He hasn't ran this year like last year, because he hasn't had to ! But don't under estimate his ability. If they take away the passing game, it opens lanes for him to take off...ala Vince Young. Vince couldn't throw a ball to save his life his first 2 years, but no one could stop him running either. He ran all the way to a NC title.

Here Texas goes again without any running game. I know Texas is great when it comes to passing, but you need some kind of running game. If A&M or Neb. contains the pass Texas will get beat. What happened to Johnson?

Yea, its was only a matter of time till the whole United States saw what i've been seeing. The Longhorns have at least 5 reliable receivers who can catch damn good and get good yards after the catch. Everyone thought that Texas only had Shipley, but no We've got many threats that can catch and score on one play. Shipley is just Damn good and happens to be Colt's roommate so thats why he was gettin' much love early in the season. Shipley, M.Williams, Kirkendoll, Goodwin, and Buckner have excellent hands and have played a significant role this year in the receiveing corps. It amazes me how the ESPN sportscasters still say that Texas has a weakness is the running game, when if you score points and win by 31 you dont really have a weakness. Most of the Longhorns games this year, you can look at the score and know nothing about the run game and still say "I bet they played good" when the sportscasters just HAVE to find something bad to say. Texas has ALOT of haters out there and many of them work for ESPN.
