Florida’s Tebow prepares for emotional home finale

  • Print

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Before quarterback Tim Tebow even arrived at Florida, there was a documentary about his life called “The Chosen One.”

After four years, two Southeastern Conference championships, two national titles, a Heisman Trophy and a chance to lead the program to its first perfect season, the top-ranked Gators may be ready to dub him “The Greatest One.”

Farfetched? Overstated? Crazy?

Not in Gainesville.

Not on Saturday, when Tebow and the Gators (11-0) host Florida State (6-5).

Tebow’s final home game probably will be an emotional spectacle, beginning with his final walk into the stadium, continuing with pregame ceremonies honoring a senior class that has more wins (46) than any other in SEC history and concluding with what Tebow hopes will be one final victory lap around The Swamp.

“I’ll try to prepare myself,” he said. “I’m not going to try to think about it, to be honest with you, too much. It’ll just probably happen. It’ll just probably be pretty emotional, pretty exciting, overwhelming to say the least. I’m excited about it. Kind of sad it’s my last opportunity, but also excited that it’ll be that special of a moment.”

Coach Urban Meyer held back tears several times this week when trying to explain what Tebow and his fellow seniors meant to him and the program. The 2006 class was Meyer’s first full recruiting class at Florida, and the first one in any of his three head-coaching stops that he stayed with from signing day to graduation.

“Kind of just mind-boggling when you think about those young guys, what they’ve done,” Meyer said.

The class is 27-5 in SEC play, 25-2 at home, 14-3 against ranked opponents and 11-1 against rivals Tennessee (4-0), Georgia (3-1), Florida State (3-0) and Miami (1-0).

“I guess that’s a decent recruiting class,” Meyer said. “I love these guys.”

No doubt, though, Tebow will get most of the love Saturday.

Florida officials would prefer that Tebow not be singled out from a class that features 24 seniors, including linebackers Brandon Spikes and Ryan Stamper, receiver Riley Cooper, defensive Jermaine Cunningham and kick returner Brandon James.

Tebow’s teammates have more realistic expectations.

“There are going to be a lot of tears in the stands seeing No. 15 run off the field the last time,” receiver David Nelson said. “I’m sure coach Meyer will be a little teared up for that. It’s going to be an emotional day, just for everything he’s worked for and everything he’s done since he’s been here. It all kind of wraps up with his last home game in The Swamp.”

Tebow was one of the nation’s top recruits in the fall of 2005. His decision came down to Alabama and Florida, his close relationship with then-Tide coach Mike Shula and his childhood dream of playing for the Gators and attending the same college as his parents.

He insists it was a more difficult decision than it might seem.

He spent 12 hours with Shula the day before his announcement and even gave Meyer no hint about his choice until after it was revealed on national television. Meyer’s phone died as they were speaking, with Tebow right in the middle of crying and saying how tough a choice it was.

Meyer assumed Tebow was headed to Alabama and refused to watch the announcement when he got home. Instead, he went outside to play catch with his son and was shocked when his wife and two daughters ran out of the house screaming the news.

Tebow arrived on campus a few weeks later and wowed teammates and coaches with his intense workouts, beginning with a drill in which he dived across concrete to win a race. Tebow’s status grew when he converted a fourth-and-1 play at Tennessee as a freshman, becoming a goal-line and short-yardage specialist and helping Florida win its first national title in a decade.

He’s been more impressive since, with jump passes, rocker-step throws, option plays, scrambles and more touchdowns than anyone in SEC history. He has 8,335 yards passing and 81 TDs, and 2,743 yards rushing and 54 scores. He holds three NCAA records, 12 SEC marks and nearly two dozen school records.

Tebow is more proud of his off-field achievements, which include mission trips to third-world countries, working with underprivileged youth and visiting hospitals and prisons. He ranks those as more important than any victories, championships or individual awards.

“At the end of the day, that is more special, being able to use football as a platform to make a kid smile, to make a kid’s day,” Tebow said. “A lot of people get caught up in beating Florida State; it’s the biggest thing in the world. Really, at the end of the day, when everything’s all put aside, it’s just a game.

“But that kid, that’s his life. It’s his opportunity or his Make-A-Wish to see me or to talk to me before a game. That’s a lot more special than even winning a game. When you put all the glitz and glamour aside, that’s what’s really special.”

Ya just gotta love all the NFL "experts" on here who keep saying Tebow won't play a down at QB in the NFL. I guess they missed NFL Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly say earlier this week that he wants the Buffalo Bills to draft Tebow to play as their next QB. I think Jim knows a little about what it takes to make a great NFL QB and apparently he believes that Tebow has what it takes.

    Go Gators!

Tebow is a better QB than cambell(wa), freeman (tb) russell (oak) by far and better than any black qb coming out of college. He will beat them by far in the nfl

    I agree Captain Longhorn....
I remember 2005 when the Longhorns struggled with A&M the week before they hung 70 on Colorado in the Big 12 Championship. Then went to the Rose Bowl and beat two Heisman trophy winners that played for the Best college team ever... Remember USC? Ahhh, the Rose Bowl.

    Go Gators,
looking forward to a great game in the SEC Championship. First FSU then bring on Alabama.
BTW whats with all the longhorns on here, they seem worried, guess the 39 points put on them by A&M would make me wonder if they were any good also.

Urban Meyer is a piece of @#$%... If I had a player throw a football in the stands after he scored, he wouldn't have to worry about playing the rest of the game..... He has NO control over his players!!!!

Thank you #137 - givesGoodFeedback. I think we heard the same crap out of the media in 2005 about the "Greatest College Team Ever" USC who was riding a 32 game win streak and 2 straight national championships. Texas didn't even belong on the field with them. Well....here we go again. Keep building on that Alabama and Florida over confidence. We love it. Son of a gun...going have such fun in Pasadena.

    Hook 'em.

    --------------------------------
And is that so important, jmichaelrob05? Did the NFL recruit Tebow and pay for his scholarship at Florida, just to groom him as an NFL player? I didn't know the NCAA was the official minor league farm system for the NFL - if it is, then why isn't the NFL footing the bill?

He's a fine college QB. If he chooses to go to the NFL that's his option, whether he makes it or not. I'm not a Florida fan at all - I'm hoping TCU finds a way to win the National Championship. But I enjoy good college football because it offers more of a variety than the NFL - every team in the NFL runs the same offense. In the NCAA, you have passing teams, option teams - and an option quarterback is a running back who handles the ball who knows he won't be an NFL quarterback - but that doesn't make him any less exciting of a player in the NCAA ranks.

If he makes it, he makes it - but that is an issue that has nothing to do with his performance as a collegian.

The media has determined that NEXT week will be the week that the Heisman trophy winner will be determined considering that Colt McCoy put up such great numbers this week, 4 TDs, 300+ yards passing, and 176 yards rushing, THIS week. Texas almost lost the game according to the media (although the Horns never actually trailed after the second possession of the first quarter). It's clear that Ingram deserves another week to prove that he's the best college football player with his 119 yards per game rushing average. (Has a running back won the Heisman with a lower average?) . According to the media, Alabama and Ingram show a lot of heart in digging out a last minute victory over Auburn. (Ingram averaged 2 yards per carry). It was a good week, but NEXT week promises to be even better because Tebow takes the field against Alabama. (Haven't the defenses been the pillar of these teams success?).

Best of luck to you Gators at the national championship. Your QB has won more times than any other QB in the history of college football and completes more than 77% of his passes. Texas will be lucky (according to the media) to even score against such a great defense.

For real, we're about to stomp you f00ls into the ground.

Reality is gonna hit tebow when he goes camping next year and he is the least talented player on the roster. The guy is all hype, not fast, not quick, no arm, bad mechanics......He gets by on guts and his size. That works in the sec but will NEVER work in the NFL.....That's your reality. I was simply trying to put his stats in perspective.....I guess WVU has the same talent base that the gators have...right?

For the over zealout Florida Fans. Tim Tebow is a fine human being. Tim is a excellent football player. He has accomplished a lot for the SEC and the University of Florida. But, quit trying to make him into the greatest football player ever. He may not even be the greatest football player this year. None of this individual stats, this year, lead the nation and there are 5 other undefeated teams that depend on their individual leaders for their leadership. Tim is among the most respected college football players ever. He has won the hearts of so many, but it stops there. Stop dissing every other great player who has graced the football field because you believe Tim to be the greatest of all. I hope Tim has a marvelous life and does good for many as I hope for all human beings.

    Hook'em Horns.

117/121 - Not an FLA fan at all, Just trying to point out all the "IFS" in your post. For example, if I had a million dollars, I'd buy a bigger house and a nicer car blah blah blah... but I don't so I won't. How do know there would have been chemistry between Harvin and White. How do know Harvin wouldn't have banged Whites GF and then hated each other, you don't so I hate when people say "If... then" Come back to reality...douche

Hope the Noles show up today like Auburn did yday. I know its at the swamp, but I got a strange feeling about this one. I think Florida will play tight today, and hopefully the Noles will play like they have nothing to lose. They don't. Hopefully, the Arkansas refs aren't there today. haha. Guess it's ACC refs though. Noles take out the gators. Gators take out the tide. Celebrate total BCS choas! Props to Tebow-Great career.
