From Big 12 snub to possible BCS for TCU

  • Print

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—When the Southwest Conference broke up after the 1995 season, TCU set out on an undesired conference-hopping journey.

Half of the Texas teams from the old SWC—Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and even Baylor, a private Christian school like TCU—were invited into the Big 12, which has grown into one of the nation’s best leagues.

The Horned Frogs, bitter about the snub, bounced from the Western Athletic Conference to Conference USA to the Mountain West over the next decade. They won or shared titles in all of them.

Those nomadic BCS outsiders have found a home in the MWC and are now in national championship contention, without the benefit of automatic access to the Bowl Championship Series.

“Everybody likes a Cinderella story,” coach Gary Patterson said. “But we’re just trying to get to the ball.”

Or big bowl in this case. One of the long-stated and unfulfilled goals for TCU (9-0, 5-0) is to get into a BCS game and win it.

The Frogs are fourth in the latest Associated Press poll, their highest ranking since 1956. They’re also in fourth place in the BCS standings, the highest a team from a conference without an automatic bid has reached.

Trailing only SEC powers Florida and Alabama, and former SWC rival Texas, that puts TCU in position to possibly do more than just be this season’s BCS buster. They could become the first to play for the national title.

Heading into a sold-out home game Saturday night against No. 16 Utah (8-1, 5-0), this is the closest TCU has been to a national championship since winning its only one in 1938, the undefeated season when Davey O’Brien won the Heisman Trophy.

TCU also claims another national title in 1935, when Sammy Baugh was the quarterback of a 12-1 team.

The Frogs won four Southwest Conference titles from 1951-59, but there hadn’t been any sustained success since then until recently.

In the past six years, TCU has four 11-win seasons and two more 10-win seasons since 2000. That’s a long way from 1-10 in 1997, the last season for coach Pat Sullivan and the freshman year for LaDainian Tomlinson.

When Dennis Franchione replaced Sullivan, he brought Patterson as his defensive coordinator. They capped their first season with a victory over Southern California in the Sun Bowl, then shared back-to-back WAC titles before Franchione left for Alabama and Patterson was promoted to head coach.

Ask Patterson how the Frogs have reached this point, and he’d rather not talk about it.

“That will scare you. It’s kind of like climbing the Eiffel Tower, which I did in the summer,” said Patterson, 82-27 in his nine seasons. “You go up that deal and get to the top, I’m glad I didn’t look down on the way up. Just keep looking ahead, look up. That’s where all the work is. Nobody gets scared looking up. It’s always when you are looking down that it always bothers you.”

Looking back, there are reminders that before Utah became the original BCS buster in 2004, the Frogs had chances to grab that distinction.

TCU won its first seven games in 2000 and was ninth in the AP poll before losing at San Jose State in early November for its only regular-season loss in Tomlinson’s senior year. The Frogs made it to 10-0 three years later before a loss at Southern Miss dashed BCS hopes.

Then there was 2005, when coming off the only losing season in Patterson’s tenure they upset then-No. 5 Oklahoma in the season opener. They lost a week later to SMU, didn’t lose again and were left to wonder what might have been.

Still, by getting close, it has helped bolster recruiting. TCU used to get players the Big 12 schools didn’t want, but now is starting to compete for some of the same prep standouts.

“We’re getting kids that normally would have gone to (Texas) Tech or A&M, starting to get kids that are looking at Texas and at Oklahoma,” said Frog Club director John Denton, a former TCU player who has been part of the team’s radio broadcasts for 21 years. “If this program takes the next step, or the second step, then there’s no more negative recruiting saying TCU can’t get there.”

Saturday night’s game will be the first sellout at 44,358-seat Amon Carter Stadium, and the biggest home game in 25 years, since 12th-ranked TCU played No. 10 Texas in 1984.

TCU has an 11-game overall winning streak, trailing only Florida (19) and Texas (13), since losing 13-10 last season at Utah, last season’s BCS buster and Mountain West champion. The Utes went on to complete an undefeated season with a Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama.

The Frogs have won 12 in a row at home since a 27-20 loss to Utah two years ago.

“If you don’t know this is a big game,” said quarterback Andy Dalton, realizing it wasn’t even necessary to finish his thought.

“If we don’t get it done, then everybody will forget about it,” Patterson said. “My goal in the next three weeks is try not to break Fort Worth’s heart.”

The Burns, I can tell that you want to rough me up. You live 20 miles from me. Bring it on, buster!

You laughably bragged about TCU "This team just mauled Utah." Utah played two ranked teams and lost both times. It was demolished by TCU, because it is horrible. Utah does not deserve to be ranked. Legitimate teams never boast that they defeat low ranked teams.

You mentioned "I wish I could save your comments for when TCU wins come January". I'll save them for you and embarrass you when TCU flops in January. You can have your way with me if TCU wins the national championship.

Jennifer... what crack do you smoke? Quit altogether, or at the least, find a better quality drug.
    "Lowly TCU?"
You do realize that every PROFESSIONAL sports broadcaster at ESPN, NBC, CBS, etc... says that TCU is not only "for real", but that they have a legitimate shot at the NC given the right circumstances. This team just mauled Utah. That's not enough respect for you? It's their only rival; the only team that has owned the frogs over the last 5 years, and that's not enough for you? With respect to a very good Utah team... they cleaned their clock!!!! Lemme ask you this: what is good enough for you? You think Florida wants to take TCU on in a bowl game? Alabama? Texas? I think the only team who would gain from this matchup would be Cincy.
Anyway, you obviously have your own screwed up idea of what a "good" team is. I've been watching the good teams play since I was a little kid.. and I can tell you, this team is excellent and well rounded in its offense, defense and special teams. It's only weakness is the long ball and kicking. They are FAR from "Lowly."
I wish I could save your comments for when TCU wins come January.

Boothe, photoboothe@yahoo.com, snarled "Jennifer is the ignorant one. Utah's win over Alabama is becoming the norm, not the exception. Witness Boise State's over Oklahoma, etc." Sissy acolytes of Boise State continue to gush about Boise State's barely defeating Oklahoma four years ago, when Oklahoma's top player was injured. Regarding what else can they swagger? They fixate on yesteryear, because that is pitifully all that they have. There is no "norm" of lowly teams defeating valid teams, because they rarely play difficult teams.

For those of you wondering how Baylor managed to end up in the Big 12, you can thank the late Governor Ann Richards of Texas. As a Baylor alum, she used her power of office to make it happen.

Larry B fatuously claimed "TCU plays a harder schedule than any of the SEC schools. It is unfortunate that Utah will end their title hopes this weekend." More than 70 teams played a top 10 team. Many played more than one. Many more played two or more ranked teams. None of that is true regarding lowly TCU.

The best football bowl game last year was TCU v. Boise State and it was played before Christmas!

The BCS stinks and everybody knows it. The "Big Chump Schools" just want the cash and don't care about crowning a real champion. If they did, there would be a playoff. It will only change when one of the big boys gets screwed out of a BCS championship. Here's hoping the Frogs and Broncos go undefeated and whip their opponents in whatever bowl they go to! GO FROGS! GO BRONCOS!

I would like to see TCU run the table and win the mythical NC, because that just might make the NCAA go to an 8 team or 16 team playoff for the NC.

TCU at best would have at least 2 losses if in the Big 12 since playing bowl caliber teams in conference play week end, week out takes a toll on the physical condition of the player and TCU would be in the same shape as OU with injuries.

I made a slight mistake when posting that Cincinnati was one of the "party" crashers trying to get into the BCS championship game! Fact is, Cincinnati is out of the Big East conference which is one of the six conferences recognized by the BCS to receive outomatic bids for their Bowl games. TCU and Boise State are not in BCS recongized conferences but are eligible for At Large bids if there are any left! However, if the status quo goes unchanged and Texas remains unbeaten, which they should, they will face either Florida or Alabama in the BCS Championship game. We definitey need a College football playoff system!

TCU should replace Baylor in the Big 12. Unfortunately non BCS schools even if undefeated do not get to the "National Title" last year Utah out of MWC undefeated and 2 one lose teams jumped them. I am sure TCU will upset the "powerhouse school" they play in a bowl game.

You know, I love my Utes but I am seriously torn on this one to be honest. I know if Utah does win it completley eliminates a chance for a Mountain West team to embarass a Big 6 school.........again.

This is tough, but I gotta still go with Utah, and hope that somehow it all works out.

    87. Posted by rick z - How can we forget!! You remind us at least ten times a day on every football post!! I think that most people are intelligent enough to realize that game was played almost a year ago!! That was the culmination of the 2008 College football season. You know, that season in which the Florida Gators won the National Championship! Seems like you have not crawled out from under your rock since the Alabama VS Utah game as it appears to be the only game you can remember!!

There will be much "gnashing of teeth and wrenching of clothing" from the BCS gangster hideout Saturday when TCU plays Utah! You can bet the suits will be rooting for Utah! That will eliminate one problem. Of course you still have that pesky Boise State and Cincinnati hanging around trying to crash the party! Cincy does have a tough test tonight against a good RR'less team which as you know, the BCS boys will be rooting for the Mountaineers! Unfortunately, there is no hope for the Broncos losing since they don't play anyone! Well, please forgive me Idaho, Utah State, Nevada and New Mexico State but you guys have a combined record of 18-19. The only possible threat to the Broncos will be the Nevada Wolf Pack with a 6-3 record and 1st in your own Western Athletic conference. Idaho is 7-3 in the WAC but Nevada beat them 70-45! Sure they didn't get that mixed up with a basketball score?!

rick z bellowed "Utah stomped on Alabama in the Sugar Bowl last season! The SEC team got whipped by Mountain West in its own backyard. You naysayers just remember that." Why do acoylates of weak teams chronically gush about yesteryear? He could have mentioned that Hawaii was ranked in top 10 after winning all its easy games three years ago, then was demolished 41-10 in Sugar Bowl by the only ranked team it played. He wants to remember the few times when invalid teams defeated teams from legitimate conferences.

Utah defeated zero ranked teams this year. Yet, ignorant voters ranked it. 15th.

One reason programs like Boise won't be invited to join the Pac 10 or Big 12 is revenue dollars generated by Boise . If you consider the Major conferences are filled with schools that have long histories and lots of former alumni who want to keep their conferences elite . Also Big Athletic Departments .
The BCS is not governed by the NCAA regarding the bowl games .It is a partnership of the major Conferences . Hench there is no NCAA Football tournament like basketball . The BCS is the agreement between the Majors .If you look programs like Cincinnati or Louisville they also have more to offer then football . They both have great basketball programs and also spent the dollars in boosting the athletics programs by building higher capacity stadiums and arenas .

The Majors are also the ones who have the network TV deals that booster their buying power . Lets face it no matter how good TCU and Boise state are doing this season regardless of schedule , not many college football fans would turn to watch TCU VS BOISE or UTAH over a UT vs Florida match up in the BCS Title game in Pasadena . The Networks would lose revenue and when those contracts are negotiated the very best is expected for their buying dollars .

Programs like Cinci and Louisville paid their dues in the non BCS conferences for years before being invited to go to the Big East . Also when the last restructuring of The BIG EAST and ACC was done , Football wasn't the key reason . The BIG EAST took on UConn for it basketball ,not football program . Notre Dame is part of the BIG EAST in basketball but would lose and automatic bid in the BCS should they become part of a BCS Conference . They would be giving their Network TV rights away by joining . As you know Notre Dame has enough clout to carry it own sole network TV contract with NBC . IF ND goes to a BCS Bowl they get paid big .

Boise being a part of the WAC going to a BCS game pays them the loin share of revenue split with their conference programs . Unlike the PAC 10 which equally splits the BCS Bowl payouts equally .
The reason the Major get more BCS spots is that they have produce the vast majority of the revenue . With larger capacity stadiums and those sweet Network TV deals their will be no play offs in Division 1-A college football anytime soon .

If TCU or Boise get into the National title game , and that's a big if . it would mean all majors have fallen way off . Even if UT , Alabama or Florida lose a game , An SEC Champ Will Play A BIG 12 or Big East Champ if Cinci goes undefeated in the BCS Title game . It would also mean a big gift from the Majors who will be allowing a non BCS school into their dance to win the prize the majors have set aside for one of their own schools .

If the Mountain West , WAC or Conference USA want a bigger share of the BCS prizes they have to make some big investments . Otherwise they'll continue hopping and even begging at times that the BCS will give them an invite to their Big Holiday Parties . Truth is hard for some but it's the BCS conference schools party ,all other non conference schools will just have to produce on the field , wait and see if they get the nod or just start something big of their own altogether .Sometimes you have to be prepared to do what it takes to buy into a game . Otherwise you will be always over looked by another program who can , regardless their record they have the ability to compete financially in that conference .

Good thing is that TCU , UTAH and Boise State have good programs that can at least put on a good enough showing to be given greater consideration today compared to years ago . So there is a glimmer of hope . An with hope all things are possible .

Good luck TCU , Boise and Utah regardless of the BCS outcome , your programs are making headway and have become part of the conversation and that's really good .

JD, Jonathan and El Mariachi, I appreciate when persons act as you do and provide facts to substantiate your position and to refute delusional comments, instead of pointlessly bellowing, as nitwits do. Persons who gush about "accomplishments" of TCU, Boise State and similar teams can not rely on evidence. They must whimper that valid teams feel afraid to play them.

Actually, I miss the early 1980's when SMU dominated the SWC. Granted, the governor of Texas at the time was paying the players. However all these BCS schools with these 80,000 to 100,000 seat stadiums are doing the same thing no with your student atheletes.

TCU might be better tha Baylor today, but the Big 12 wasn't formed based on a crystal ball looking at 2009. It was formed based off of what was currently happeneing and what had just recently happened. Baylor was the obvious choice over TCU in 1994, regardless of political influence.

Baylor's 5-year resume prior to Feb 25th, 1994 (day the Big 12 was founded):
(which means the team's performance through the 1993 season)

-Beat Texas in 1989 (50-7, by the way), 91, 92.
-Went to the Copper Bowl in 1991.
-Won the John Hancock Bowl in 1992.
-Ranked in Top 25 all throughout 1991 season.
-Began 1993 ranked in Top 25.
    -Beat TCU from 1989-92.
-Finished T-2nd place in SWC from 1990-1992.
-TCU, Rice, SMU, and Houston (those who obviously did not get invited) did not finish ahead of Baylor in the SWC standings from 1989-1993.
