TCU not wanting to repeat past in Wyoming

  • Print

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP)—The last time TCU played at Wyoming, the Horned Frogs lost. The last time they were 10-0, they lost.

Be assured that coach Gary Patterson has reminded his team of that 2007 trip to Laramie, Wyo., where the fourth-ranked Horned Frogs play on Saturday. And the 2003 season when they won their first 10 games before losing at Southern Miss and even 2005, when after winning at Oklahoma to start the season they lost at SMU.

“We were quickly reminded,” defensive tackle Cory Grant said.

But this season is already much different. TCU has reached unprecedented heights while showing no signs of faltering.

The Frogs (6-0 Mountain West) are fourth in the Bowl Championship Series standings, higher than any team from a conference without an automatic bid has ever been this late in a season. Win their last two games and they likely play in one of the big-money bowl BCS games, and maybe even have a chance to be the first outsider to play for the national title.

They are coming off a 55-28 victory over Utah, when they built a 35-7 lead before a record home crowd of more than 50,000 against last season’s BCS buster. And there was an earlier 31-point victory at BYU, the other perennial Top 25 team from the Mountain West.

Patterson is still cautious and reminding his team that they have to go on the road and “take the game.” Yet he also realizes how close the Frogs are to accomplishing something special.

“We’ve been at this point in time,” Patterson said. “I don’t see why this football team would have a letdown.”

Especially since the Frogs are heavy favorites in their last two games, at Wyoming (5-5, 3-3 MWC) where they can clinch at least a share of the Mountain West title, then the home finale the following Saturday against winless New Mexico.

“The thing that makes them so tough is they have no weakness,” Wyoming coach Dave Christensen said. “They have no spot on the field you would consider a weakness. … They’re a complete team.”

TCU is fourth nationally in total defense (245 yards per game) and total offense (468 yards), the only team that even ranks top 15 in both categories. The Frogs have scored more than 50 points in consecutive games for the first time in school history and had at least 500 total yards the last three—and they gave up only 53 total points the last five games.

“We are very confident in what we have as far as this football team, what we’ve established thus far,” Grant said. “I believe if we keep on all the cylinders we are right now, we should do what we have to do and win the next two games and get to the place we want to go.”

The Frogs’ last undefeated regular season was 1938, when Heisman Trophy-winner quarterback Davey O’Brien led TCU to their only national championship.

Still, Patterson’s cautious nature will point out that the Frogs lost 24-21 their last trip to Wyoming. What he will fail to mention is that they beat the Cowboys 54-7 at home last season.

He might note that third-ranked Texas, which went to Wyoming as a nearly five-touchdown favorite in September, trailed late in the second quarter and led only 13-10 at halftime. The rest of that story: Texas won 41-10.

But ask Patterson about his 2003 team that was 10-0 before losing 40-28 at Southern Miss, ending its hope of making the BCS or even winning the Conference USA title that year, he provides a stark and telling comparison that shows his confidence.

“We’re a lot better team,” Patterson said. “We were running of gas when we went to Southern Miss.”

Wyoming needed a 24-point rally in fourth quarter last weekend to win 30-27 at San Diego State, where TCU won 55-12 a week earlier. The Cowboys were outscored 110-16 their previous 15 quarters—including two shutout losses— before that outburst.

Regardless, Patterson wants his team to approach Wyoming the same way they did Utah, BYU and everybody else.

“We’ve got quite a task at hand this week, just because of playing a team that also has a chance to be bowl eligible. So for us, we just need to keep minding our own business,” Patterson said. “Playing at home (to end the regular season), if you could get by this ball game, then I think you can start letting your mind think a little bit more.”

Who cares? Again, why are you worried about football teams in our state, you batty woman?"

Jeffree, you are as brilliant as your parents who misspelled your name. I complained that a lunatic Horned Frog fan lied that TCU defeated Texas Tech last year. Second, I commented last time that Texas Tech is my favorite team. Yet, you asked again why I care about football teams in Texas. How many times must I inform you?

Tough schedules don't play a factor unless you lose. Both Fla and Texas make cakewalk out of conference schedules and I don't see how that helps their cause. Being undefeated yes, being considered a power house, less so. I'd love to see these teams take a page out of USC and OKL and play difficult teams out of conference. They don't have to be highly ranked teams, just not under manned teams such as Fla INT and Middle Tenn State. I think, as they proved that TCU and BSU can at the very least hold their own against the TEX, Fla, Ala, if not win out right. I'm sure if you take away their games against out of conference lesser opps. that their stats would be just normal. It makes for bad football throughout the season, just so the big names of Fla, Tex or Bama can remain blemish free and have a chance at a bigger viewing for one game, the BCS Championship game. They have tried and failed to correct crowning the national championship with the BCS and it is high time to resolve this......6 team playoff with the top 2 getting a bye would fix this mess. Bama lost to Fla in the sec championship game while Fla lost to Ole Miss. I would have kept Bama ranked higher in the BCS because of the descrepancies of the teams they lost to.

Boise St has a out side shot, When they made the Mountain Conference Boise St should have gone along to make it even tougher, to show the BCS with nodout the Mountain is for real. With Boise St being the only WAC team thats any good, they don't have anything to complain about other than there undefeated in a Conference that sucks.TCU however has a lot to say, they beat a couple ranked teams and destroyed BYU and UTAH which are ranked also.I hope they go after their Bowl bid like Utah did last year!! TCU can beat anyone of the top 3 teams and thats just plain and simple.

TCU can play with anyone, and it will be a shame if 4 teams finish undefeated at the end of the regular season, because they all deserve a chance to play for the championship. I would pay to see a game between the winner of:
TEXAS vs. SEC champ and TCU / Boise State.

Who is this pene Stephen Hawkins? Dont they have editors at the AP? He states "TCU is fourth nationally in total defense (245 yards per game) and total offense (468 yards), the only team that even ranks top 15 in both categories."

Pardon me dooshbag; The Longhorns are 2nd in the nation in Offense (2 up on the Frogs) and 7th in defense (1 up @ 233 ypg on the #8 frogs), so there must be two teams "that even ranks top 15 in both categories".

Go back to the Enquirer dude!

These comments are all pretty hilarious. While I'm not a fan of the BCS, they do seem to bring some order to the process---not that many of the posters here let that get in their way. Through week 6 or 7, the pollster cliques had OK & USC in the top 10 ??? Ranked teams included such powerhouses as Nebr, Mizzou, Kansas, Houston at 12 !?! South Fla, South Carolina, Michigan, Cal and Georgia in the top 25? I think even fatboy Charlie Weis made an appearance. Today, only Houston & lowly USC (ROTFFLMAO) remain with Nebr & Cal sucking teat around 25..

The only think that matters is who gets an invite to the party come early December.

    Conference dominance? Please...
    Ranked teams
    4 Big 10, Pack10 & ACC
3 Big East, SUC and MWC
    2 B12
    1 WAC & CUSA

    NC: Texas/ALA
    Sugar: FLA/TCU
Beyond that, who cares. The Republic of Texas marches on!

hmmmm. well, we lost to TCU on the field, throw out all the computer/stats mumbo jumbo.

I played football. When we lost, we lost. It was not the damn computers, simply execution on the field. Football is a physical sport, not eye candy or computers.

TCU even if they win out will not get in the National Title game as they are a non BCS school. Cincinnati currently is ranked third by the computers with 0.9100 score however the Harris and coaches are bringing them down as they have a score of 0.82 in both. If Texas were to lose one game Cincinnati would end finishing second in the final poll if they win out as Texas would be knocked out of the top 5 and one of the SEC teams will knock the other out of the top 5 as well. The human poll voters would not vote a non BCS school TCU ahead of a BCS school Cincinnati even though Cincinnati is viewed as a non BCS school.

Jeffree K snarled "Hey Jennifer Tyler Who cares? TCU and Texas Tech both had a year that season.

Why does it even concern you what schools from Texas do ?

What the hell is wrong with you? Worried about your own team, you crazy witch.

    Wreck 'em Red Raiders!!!!"

Jeffree K, you are a certifiable nitwit. Texas Tech is my "own team". I complained that a psychoneurotic Horned Frog lied that TCU defeated Texas Tech last year. You lambasted me, instead of the liar. I called for a moratorium on psychotic lies by Horned Frogs. They refuse to desist.

jl confronted me regarding my ridiculing TCU's easy opponents "They've proven their metal against some real teams this year". You define "real times" as being ranked 21st, 22nd and 23rd in BCS standings. What adjective comparatively depicts legitimate top 10 teams like Florida, Alabama and Texas? Furthermore, two of those teams which TCU defeated will play. The loser will not be ranked. Neither will the other two, if they lose another game. TCU might not have defeated one ranked opponent when the season concludes.

There should be a numerical punishment administered to teams after the season is over. Teams should have proportionately more points deducted, based on how easy their schedules are. It would eradicate delusions of teams like TCU and Boise State that they are legitimate.

jl commented "The A&M loss is something of a fluke and that one is really a little hard to figure". Could it be because Tech's top two quarterbacks were injured and impaired?

You guys from the Big 12 and the SEC talk all tough.... I'm a BYU fan, but I find it humorous that you think your conferences are so superior... Yet, everytime that a Mountain West Elite team plays you guys we seem to whoop you.... i.e. BYU vs OU in 2009, UT vs Alabama last year, and TCU vs any team you send against them this year. Our offenses are superior and our defenses are under rated....

If you really want to know the difference between BYU, UTAH, TCU and BOISE STATE versus the Big10, the Big 12, the SEC, the ACC or the PAC 10 (which I think are all better than the Big East) you simply have to look at the Media coverage.... The sports writers love the BCS conferences and as a result they cover them more and rate them higher.... The BCS conferences are like Barak Obama to the mainstream media where the more the more talented candidates with less positive coverage is the elite teams in the Mountain West, Conf USA and the WAC...

If Boise State and Houston were to join the Mountain West, it could possiblyl be the most talented football conference in America.... Believe it or don't.... it's true.

What really sucks for TCU, Cincinnati, and teams like that is no matter how many seasons they go unbeaten in a row they'll never get in the big game because the BCS is not going to let it happen. They can't make enough money putting smaller conference teams in there. Those teams just won't get a fair shake because of ratings, money, and fear from the BCS TCU could win the game and that would shake the entire BCS up. the NCAA would be terrified that would happen so, I hate to say it but.TCU EVEN IF TEXAS CHOKES WILL NOT BE THERE. They will give it to a one loss team in a big conference first so they can make their money.. @#$%s!!!

    Jennifer Tyler,

Your characterization of TCU is lopsided. They've proven their metal against some real teams this year, including Clemson, BYU, Utah, and Air Force. I put Air Force in there because of their good defense, not because they are highly ranked. Clemson was the other strong D they played. Clemson should be ranked higher than they are. Look at Clemson's schedule and you will see they've had a tough schedule. Their losses are by small margins to good teams. BYU and Utah were less impressive just because their defenses aren't that great. But they were still opponents worthy of mention. The rest of their schedule was and is a cake walk. But one can make the same argument for the top 3 ranked teams. They all played about 4 teams worthy of mention and the rest were pretty weak.

And Texas Tech is no team to sneeze at either. With the exception of their loss to A&M, there other losses have been to good teams by fairly low margins. That includes Texas. I'm a Longhorn, and I know every year that Tech is a hurdle for Texas to pass. The A&M loss is something of a fluke and that one is really a little hard to figure. I chalk it up to the Aggies being a volatile team. They've had some big losses, big wins and several close games.

    Hook'em Horns

    Hey Jennifer Tyler.

We had Walter Bryant and Quentily Harris as wide recievers. Also had Graham Harrel as a quarterback and Shannon Woods as a running back. We still lost the game.

Why does it even concern you what schools from Texas do ? And worry about Boise State as well?

I would have to say "Hookem Horns" Is about the Number 1 most stupid saying in all of College Football. Comming from a fan that isn't a fan of any of the BCS confrences. Definately making an unbaised statement. Surely Texas could come up with something better. Steers and something else is all I know!
