Steady play of QB Dalton leads fourth-ranked Frogs

  • Print

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP)—Andy Dalton’s penchant for producing big plays isn’t confined to the field.

Along with rolling up wins for No. 4 TCU, the junior quarterback also rescues dogs in distress. This has simply been that type of charmed season for Dalton and the Horned Frogs.

TCU is 11-0 for the first time since 1938 after a 45-10 win over Wyoming on Saturday that gave the Frogs at least a share of the Mountain West Conference title and kept them in the hunt for a BCS bowl.

TCU wraps up the regular season next weekend against New Mexico, which edged Colorado State on Saturday for its first win of the season. Provided the Frogs beat the Lobos, they can sit back and wait to see if their work was enough.

“(We) see what’s ahead of us,” said Dalton, whose team remained at No. 4 in The Associated Press poll released Sunday. “If we win next week, we get a shot at a big bowl. It’s motivation for us. We’re trying to play our best each week. Hopefully, we’ll impress someone.”

Dalton certainly impressed a runner out for a jog with her dog. While driving down the road a few months back, a woman frantically waved him over after her dog had fallen ill.

Dalton then did what he does best—engineered a crucial drive.

“She said, ‘My dog has passed out and isn’t moving, please take me to my car,”’ Dalton recalled. “I told her, ‘Put your dog in my car and I can take you.’ I gave them some water and got the dog in the car.”

Just like he’s been doing all season, Dalton came through under pressure.

The red-haired signal caller out of Katy, Texas, has the Frogs marching to his steady beat. Over the last six games, he’s thrown 12 touchdown passes and just two picks.

The calmly confident Dalton also is approaching legendary company. With 28 career wins, he’s one shy of matching the school record that Slingin’ Sammy Baugh set from 1934-36.

“It’s pretty cool to be considered with a guy like that,” said Dalton, who became the starter as a redshirt freshman in 2007.

For all the wins, though, he’s almost an afterthought in the Heisman Trophy race. It’s a notion that TCU coach Gary Patterson understands quite well since his team is in the same boat.

“It’s because it started too late. It’s like being ranked. If you want a chance to be in the top 10, you have to start higher and Andy Dalton didn’t start very high,” Patterson said. “I think he will be a guy people will pay attention to. All he’s ever done is win.”

All those wins have cost Dalton some hair, though. He told his teammates over the summer that if the Frogs won 10 straight, he’d shave his locks into a faux Mohawk.

Keeping his word, Dalton went to receiver Jeremy Kerley’s barber to get his tresses trimmed late last week, allowing the stylist to have free reign over Dalton’s hair. The next thing Dalton knew, he had “TCU” carved into the side of his head.

“I guess I lost a bet,” Dalton said, “but it was a good bet to lose.”

Now, he’s hoping the Frogs can earn a crack at one of the big boys on the block in a big-money bowl. But that’s out of his control.

“It’s all speculation who will go and then who should go. Each team thinks they should have the shot,” Dalton said. “We’re trying to play the best we can each week and hopefully we’re impressing some people as we do it.”

Dalton was consistent through the air against Wyoming, finishing 10-of-19 for 168 yards and a 45-yard TD strike to Kerley. He also threw an interception on a tipped pass.

Even more, he displayed another part of his game—his running ability. When the Cowboys left the middle of the field open, Dalton took off through the line and finished with a season-high 88 yards rushing.

“It seemed to work for us,” Dalton casually said.

These days, pretty much everything is working for a team that boasts a high-powered offense to match their dominating defense. The Frogs gained more than 500 yards of offense for the fourth straight week, with the running game doing most of the damage against Wyoming. Matthew Tucker and Joseph Turner each scored two touchdowns and combined for 200 yards on the ground.

“I’m glad to see everything’s clicking,” Dalton said. “For these seniors, for this program, for this school, it’s been a lot of fun this whole year.”

OK, well then lets compare apples to apples. Both TCU and TEXAS played Wyoming this year, and both beat them very convincingly, but TCU BEAT THEM\ BY MORE and basically the only reason that WYoming even scored in the game is TCU's uncharacteristic TURNOVERS!! here's the stats quoted from another article on YAHOO.

"The Horned Frogs rolled up 25 first downs while holding Wyoming to 5. (Back in September, the Longhorns out-first-downed the Cowboys 27-18).

TCU held Wyoming to 178 yards of total offense. Wyoming had 273 against Texas.

In the first half, the Frogs threw an interception at the Wyoming 7-yard line and fumbled away the ball at the Cowboys’ 2, or the final margin could have been larger. "

SO COMPARING APPLES TO APPLES or WYOMING'S TO WYOMING'S, TCU has a little more dominating offense, and a way more dominating DEFENSE.

SORRY LONGHORN fans STAT'S don't lie.

Thanks for the post alex B, funny that everyone always says the weakness of TCU's schedule is why they don't deserve to be rated, hmmmm. Yet, they are undefeated, very difficult for anyone to do period, and have played 3 Top 20 teams...beating them pretty convincingly...including Clemson, who is playing in the ACC championship game.

And for iamme23andsumchange, first of all, use the spell checker. Secondly, how can you say that with a straight face. You think that Florida, UT, and Alabama are under more scrutiny than TCU??? All TCU has to do is have a bad game (and still win) and they will tumble in the polls. They lose and they likely fall from the top 15...why, because of over-the-top scrutiny and lack of respect for what they have accomplished over the past several years. And by the way, remember when TCU came into Norman in 2005 and beat the #7 Sooners?

Tony C, thank you for saying it. I've been saying the exact same thing all season. The only reason TCU and Cincy are getting any love is because they rarely have a season/team such as this. Texas, USC, Bama, and Florida all have to be perfect, or they'll constantly here from every other fan from across the country about how bad they are. If any of the top shared TCU's schedule they would be the laughing stock of college football. And to all those who say UT is Texas' second best team needs to take a pill. Remeber is 2007 when a hyped-TCU team came to Austin and got smashed by a lowly Texas team (lowly for Texas standards)? I do, it was a joke. Depth and talent prevailed in the end for Texas, much like it would for Texas this year.

I love college football and hope and pray for a playoff system someday. I can't think of any other college or professional sport that doesn't have a playoff system. Until there is some sort of playoff system in college football there will always be "what ifs".

I've watched a couple of TCU games this year and they are an explosive team. Comparing strength of schedules is one aspect of all of this but I just want to throw something else out there to consider. I played sports all through high school and we had an udefeated football team a couple of years and won state, and also ran track at state but we were in a smaller division. If we would have played some of the teams from bigger divisions we would have lost. So.....look at Alabama, Texas, Florida and look at their rosters. Look where most of these guys were ranked coming out of high school. Most of them were 4 star recruits. TCU however is filled with mostly 2 star recruits. I'm thinking from a pure talent level here and I just don't know how TCU would match up with athletes that are superior talent. I'm not knocking TCU but talent is always a factor and I just think that TCU would be overmatched in the key areas. I know that there are arguments to this thought (Boise / Oklahoma) but it's just a thought.

Don't go spouting off about what Alabama couldn't do last year. The Bama team THIS YEAR is a stronger and better beast. Likewise, Utah "ain't" this year, what they were last year. That doesn't mean it's not a feather in TCU's cap to have beaten them. But try to see straight past the purple goggles you got on. Bama's defense would have shut Utah down this year. Likewise, Utah hadn't faced a strong defense like TCU's. But then, all of the currently top 4 BCS ranked teams have superb defenses. Yes ... all of them. You want to have some idea what going up against Bama, Texas, Nebraska, or Florida would be like. You got an inkling out of the Clemson and Air Force games. Those are the toughest defenses TCU has played.

Not knocking TCU. Fact is, I think all four of the top ranked teams COULD beat each other. I'm thrilled that two of them are Texas teams, irrespective of their conferences. But try to keep it real. All four of the top teams are contenders, and really in a seperate class from the majority of the other lesser ranked teams. It is unlikely any of the top four could rack up lots of points against each other, because their defenses are far and away better than the likes of Utah, BYU, Oklahoma St, etc.

Nebraska will be a test for Texas because of that all important defense they have. And Nebraska's offense is starting to produce on a more even keel. OU was Texas last defensive test. But Texas offense is better balanced now than it was then. And don't underestimate the tough rivarly game factor. It's real. I'm a Longhorn fan, and I won't be making c o c k y predictions. If the Longhorns lose their focus, they could lose either the Aggie rivalry game or the division title game.

TCU has a worthy team that can compete with any of the top 3. But don't presume to believe you KNOW the outcome ahead of time. TCU has yet to be tested by the top level defenses. It makes a difference. Frankly, fans will talk all the smack they want. I bet the players on any of these top 4 teams would take each other seriously.

What's ridiculous is that Cincinnati was off and they gained ground on TCU in the computer rankings. Stupid!

UTAH's offense did indeed FINALLY get shut down! Just like Boise state, TCU did what ALABAMA COULDN'T!!I Only OREGON slowed UTAH down as well this SEASON as TCU, BUT OREGON's offense only pulled off a 7 point win. I wasn't implying they had a prayer against TCU, just that the people touting "strong schedules" don't know the facts! The only team in the top 20 that I've noticed had a higher Strength of Schedule than TCU was OREGON, playing 5 top 20 teams, and they're not in contention for the Title. OK. was 17 in SOS rankings but it was too much for them. When you look at out of conf. games and even last years bowl games, the leaders in the Mountain West, lately, don't have much of a problem with any conference, not even the SEC.

UTexas homers--you're polite but you're also wrong. TCU would take all 3 of the schools "ahead" of them to the woodshed. I think anyone thinking less has not really watched them play. Growing up in Florida and living in Atlanta, I watch the SEC up close. They may be able to beat Texas, but they won't beat TCU. They have strong defenses that may compare with TCU but they simply are not as balanced or explosive in their offenses. [UT has a--usually--explosive offense but will lose in a head-to-head battle with TCU's defense.] I am really convinced that TCU is the best team in the country right now.

The latest SOS's I've seen show's TCU's the only team in the top ten with a Schedule in the 20's Florida and alabama both in the mid to high 30's and the rest to high to even mention. With TCU's def&off rankings, not only could they play with them, I think they would embarass Texas and easily beat FL, Al would be a little tough but probably at least a double score win. We'll see what happens, I think TX will probably have a really close game with Neb. and may lose it. Al will beat Fl decently and it will leave TCU and Alabama for the championship!!! After TCU'S definsive shutdown of BOISE state in last years bowl game and UTAH's demolition of ALABAMA in the SUGAR bowl last year, I would have thought the SOS naysayers would have eatin enough of thier own words to maybe think twice before they start chewin again.

The NCAA strength of schedule numbers for the top six teams in the BCS:
    1. Florida 37th
    2. Alabama 24th
    3. Texas 50th
    4. TCU 32nd
    5. Cincinnati 55th
    6. Boise State 97th

Something to think about when you talk about how much harder Texas's schedule is.

TCU is a good team and I have watched them all season and I really like Kerely, Jeremey that is. He could do more for TCU if you let him. But, I am a Texas fan and the only team that can beat Florida or Alabama is Texas who I have also watched all season. TCU would make a good showing for their school but I really don't believe they can compete with the big BCS Teams. TCU will get a super bowl bid and I do wish them well. They will never know how great they were unless they play Florida, Alabama or Texas. I guess 4th place is all right unless you are one of the three teams that I just mentioned. GO LONGHORNS!!

They beat the same team this weekend that texas beat eary in the season and tcu scored 4 more points than texas did on wyoming. tcu was pulling starters in the 3rd. Oh and yes tcu has played 1 div 2 school how many has florida and alabama played . These frogs are real . Now if you want history they have that too. tcu has won 2 nc,s DEAL WITH IT!
