Gators, Tide turn SEC championship into playoff

  • Print

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP)—The Southeastern Conference championship game couldn’t get any bigger.

Unbeaten Florida (12-0) and undefeated Alabama (12-0). No. 1 vs. No. 2. High-profile coaches Urban Meyer and Nick Saban. Heisman Trophy hopefuls Tim Tebow and Mark Ingram vs. two of the nation’s best defenses with a spot in the national championship game on the line.

A rematch of a classic game to boot.

The Gators and Tide clinched spots in the league title game weeks ago, a precarious position for the stretch run. Meyer and Saban worried about complacency, but their teams remained perfect despite close calls and essentially turned Saturday’s SEC showdown in Atlanta into a national championship semifinal for the second straight season.

It’s college football’s most anticipated matchup since Florida and Oklahoma played in the Bowl Championship Series title game in January. It’s the game people started talking about in the preseason and have been pointing to ever since. And it’s finally here.

“I can’t think of a bigger football game that I’ve been a part of, that we’ve been a part of,” Meyer said Sunday. “College football wants this game. I’ve been hearing it for a long time and trying to ignore it and push it back. Our players have been, too.”

Now, they can embrace it.

The winner advances to the BCS title game in Pasadena, Calif. The loser still gets a BCS berth, almost certainly in the Sugar Bowl.

This game has been on both teams’ radar all season. Top-ranked Florida, the defending national champion, was the unanimous choice to win the Eastern Division, and No. 2 Alabama was a popular pick in the West. Getting back to Atlanta didn’t go as smoothly as some expected, though.

The Gators needed a last-second field goal to beat Arkansas and played close games against Mississippi State and South Carolina. They secured a spot in the SEC title game in late October, and Meyer said he was proud of his players’ focus down the stretch.

“To think that we clinched a berth in this four weeks ago and still took care of business when everybody kept talking about the SEC championship game,” Meyer said. “Just great admiration for our guys to stay focused.”

The Crimson Tide edged Tennessee on a blocked field goal in October, then clinched a spot in Atlanta with a controversial win against LSU two weeks later. The Tide eked out a 26-21 victory over rival Auburn on Friday thanks to a game-winning drive in the closing minutes.

“Great teams, great competitors are never satisfied,” Saban said. “They always want to accomplish more and achieve more and they are very committed to that standard of excellence. This team is going to have an opportunity again to do something that last year’s team didn’t get done. … I’m extremely proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish this year.”

Ingram, the SEC’s leading rusher, bruised a hip against the Tigers and sat out most of the game-winning drive. But Saban said he expects him to be healthy against Florida.

“I think he’ll be fine,” Saban said. “We don’t think he has a significant problem. Those things are a little bit painful, especially when you first get them. It was late in the game when it happened and he never really had an opportunity to go back in. But we’ll see more (Monday) and how he moves around in practice. But we feel like he’ll be fine for the game.”

Ingram was held to 30 yards on 16 carries Friday. He probably will need a much better performance against the Gators to have a shot at winning the Heisman.

Tebow appears to be back in the hunt for college football’s most prestigious award, too.

He accounted for 311 yards and five touchdowns in Saturday’s 37-10 win against Florida State. He completed 17 of 21 passes for 221 yards and three TDs, and ran 15 times for 90 yards during a triumphant home finale.

So the SEC title game, in addition to national championship implications, could be a final Heisman showcase for both star players.

Nonetheless, Tebow said that even though there’s a lot at stake, the game won’t be an all-or-nothing affair.

“All these great memories, if something happened, they’re not just going to go away,” Tebow said. “We’re still going to have a lot of great memories from this year. Yes, that game means a lot and our goal is to win the SEC title every year, especially this year, but it’s not all or nothing. We still had a pretty special season.”

It certainly would be more memorable with a victory. The Gators dominated the fourth quarter against Alabama last year, scoring 14 unanswered points in a 31-20 victory that propelled them to the national title.

Florida, following Tebow’s lead, opened this season talking about wanting to repeat and putting together the school’s first perfect season.

Sky-high expectations followed all season. They will be there in Atlanta, too.

“The expectation level, it felt like it was on you the entire year,” Meyer said. “That’s where the biggest difference was. The players felt it and the coaches felt it.”

All right, here's the deal: If Texas loses, then it's going to be Ala or Fla playing Cincin or some gay thing like that. And let's face it: that'll be the worst darn game on TV. What kinda BCS game is that? So, I'm rooting for Texas, regardless of the SEC outcome. Bama or Florida meeting TX would be fine, but Ala or Fla meeting Cinc or Boise would be a seroius gay letdown. Good Lord! What's happeningt to college football? Let TCU play. At least they've got a tradition of football. The others, well, God bless em, but they suck. It would be a gay fest and frankly I couldn't bear to watch.

Yo DawgMEAT - you are nothing short of being a monument to yourself. Ok, we'll give it to you. You win... Go away now, play Metallica with an episode of the Stooges on the TV, the adults would like to talk... Beyond that Dipity do Dawg... folks here have stopped listening to you a long time ago. Please go off somewhere else where folks may actually buy the BS that you are selling.... While you're at it, try to purchase some common sense and a bit of character. Two things that you lack in abundance. You're creative and sneeky as hell, that's for sure, but, being a Private Dick that sneaks around on other people - it's probably just what you're most used too...

BTW, The ONLY one that IS a FOOL on this post is YOU! Sell your crap out west where you might find a buyer.... Again, no one here is buying the crap you're selling.... Your wit has become completely bewildered!

lets look at some more facts .... shall we ?????

5 teams from the Pac 10 are ranked .... 3 teams from the SEC are ranked.

thats 50% of the Pac 10, and 25% of the SEC. yeah .... lol .... the SEC is better. lol. the funniest thing is ..... if it were reversed, if 5 SEC teams were ranked and 3 Pac 10 teams were ranked .... SEC fans would be in here screaming until they are blue in the face how they have more ranked teams so it means they are better ..... but since its the Pac 10 that has more ranked teams, that doesnt matter. the hypocrisy is absolutely amazing.

Gator Dick .... perhaps you should take a look at the standings. Georgia and Tennessee are both in the top 5. you can go off your opinion .... i tend to go off facts.

also .... spare me your horsesh*t of UCLA beat Tennessee when Tennessee was horrible ..... lol .... what a horsesh*t .... bullsh*t .... lame assed excuse. Washington beat USC when USC didnt have their starting QB .... does that take the L off the board ????

RESPONDING to.

Cassie ..... i was on one of these blogs slaughtering a couple Texas fans who were creaming in their jeans when Auburn went up 14-0. apparently ..... they were under the impression that a football game is 15 minutes long. i told them a lot of football was left to be played ..... and lookie lookie what happened .... Alabama won. needless to say ..... they werent posting after the game was over. wonder why. hmmmmmm.

Jay ..... you have absolutely NO idea what the hell youre talking about. Danny made a post that said Pac 10 teams could not compete in the SEC ..... so in RESPONSE i pointed out that 3 teams in the lower half of the standings in the Pac 10 this season played damned competitively against 3 teams in the upper half of the SEC standings. THEN .... he went on to talk about how Alabama beat a team that was ranked at the time the game was played but is not ranked now .... and considered it beating a ranked team. so .... in RESPONSE i made an example of UCLA beating an Alabama team that was #3 at the time of the game but finished 3-8 for the season. the point being .... CLEARLY .... UCLA did not beat a ranked team, even though Alabama was #3 at the time of the game .... they beat a 3-8 team.

in NO WAY was i validating the Pac 10 by bringing up games played against the SEC .... like you so ignorantly pointed out ....... i was merely RESPONDING to idiotic claims made by a dumbass redneck SEC fan that doesnt know a damned thing about college football.

see what happens when you pipe off without having a clue what a conversation is about ????? taking things out of context will always make you look like an ass.

GATORDICK, you are correct in your analysis, but i would say that , if properly used, Bama has the most devastating run game in College Football, i just don't think that Saban really has the Offensive mind to take advantage of what he has at his disposal, if he does, boy, LIGHTS OUT, i am a TRUE OLD SCHOOL GATOR, but i call it the way i see it, on the other hand , Meyers is just too smart for Saban, and Cody is not fast enough to be a factor in this game, just as it was for him last year, (remember, the gators had a chance to get Cody out of High School) Florida will take advantage of Bama on the edges and manipulate McClain and Arenas, wearing them down with huge responsibilities, Bama defense is EXCELLENT, but Meyers Brain is SUPERB, close game, every second on the edge of the seat, Florida (should) pull it out , if Bama slips up for lack of Big Game Experience, which is what REALLY seperates the two teams, other than that, Florida by 4 or 10, Go Gators, Repeat.

JAY R. your analysis on dawgmeat is award winning, slowly but surely there are others besides myself and BILLY B, that has realized his lil antics, i thought for a very long time , that this dude is putting out these statistics and no one realizes how full of crap they are, boy , i tell ya , this is like a breath of fresh air, he has been doing this crap since the season started, and he had gotten so comfortable with it , he started predicting the outcome of games (never got it correct) and his lil fans would drool over this clowns assertions, and when opposed, he goes into a tirade of profanity , he is a lame at best, he made big predictions about USC vs Oregon, and needless to say that outcome, GO GATORS, REPEAT

Billy what about McClain? he is your spikes if not better. Cody is neutralized from the start b/c our best o lineman are from guard to guard so you better hope you can bring the rush from the outside. Ingram is better than any of our backs, but dont forget to mention emanuel moody in our back field. Demps, Rainey, and Moody( Tebow Too) deliver the best running game in all of football. Bama had better gell before the final drive in this one cause UF is firing on all cylinders of Offense, Defense, Special teams and coaching/calling plays. Bama needs a perfect game

Dawgmeat, just because the PAC is still rebuilding doesnt mean they are terrible. They are just not as good as the SEC as a whole, with the SEC East being the stronger of the two brothers. you keep saying tenn and UGA are our good teams. Well, you should proabaly watch a bit more of SEC football, BUT HEY, thats just my opinion. UCLA BARELY BEAT UT AND THAT WAS WHEN TENN SUCKED. MIDDLE OF THE SEASON UT FIGURED OUT THEY COULD USE THE BOOTLEG WITH CROMPTON AND THEY MANAGED SOME OFFENSE.....BARELY. SO TO TOUT UCLA EVER TENN IS A BIT SHAKEY. UF, BAMA and TCU ARE THE BEST TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY. TEXAS IS NOT EVEN CLOSE

BILLY B. you have the bead on dawgmeat, he can't handle that type of pressure, boy you sure came at the right time, this dude has been getting away with murder, and has a following of clowns that you would not believe, and they actually support his lil smudging of statistics, and don't even notice that while he does it , it always gives the Pac10 a slant, consistently, you would not fathom. CASIE C. i know and respect you and Michael H. and several others on the threads as true Bama Fans, and look forward to the Battle of the Century, but please , even with your great desire for your team to win, DO NOT, put the slightest piece of credence or trust in anything that dawgmeat predicts, especially if it is about the Gators, his dislike for the Gators is SO GREAT , that it fogs his ability to make sound and fair judgement , and analysis, even though i know he is your boy, his dislike for the SEC is just as great that he prefer FEELINGS OVER TRUTH, good luck and hope the better team represents the SEC in the Title Game. GO GATORS, REPEAT

The Pac-10 is playing a championship game this year. The Civil War, Thursday Dec. 3 at Autzen Stadium. It's on TV, even on the East Coast for you haters, so watch it.

Go Ducks, and go Gators. The Tide can roll their way to the Sugar Bowl to get destroyed by Boise State. The best game next year will be TCU vs. Cincinnati in the Orange Bowl.

The Gators will blow out Alabama and they will edge Texas. Maybe Florida should have lost to Arkansas, but Bama should have lost to Tennessee and Auburn, stick that in your pipe and smoke it. None of the BCS schools are as good as Boise State or TCU, except perhaps Cincinnati. There will be 4 teams this year to finish undefeated, so perhaps this will be the beginning of the end for the BCS.

Florida and Bama have already played a number of great SEC Championships games. However, I believe that this one will top them all, at least in the pre-game hype....

Both teams match up very well. Cody is to Bama what Spikes is to Florida. Florida has a better defensive backfiled, but if Cody & co. can put on the pressure in the passing game, Bama will neutralize Florida's advantage there... The same could be said about equalizing Florida QB advantage as well. I think that Ingram and Richardson are every bit as good or better than Demps and Rainey.... All in all, this has the maiknings of one of the best Championship matchups the SEC (and the Country) will have seen or will see in a while!

Go Gators. It's gonna be a good one!

    162. Hurklin.....on a playoff system.

The problems is the BCS, which was created by the Big Six Conferences, don't want a playoff system. None of their AD's want it because each conference Big Six conference champion is guaranteed to play in a BCS game, no matter what they rank. That's 14+ million dollars to the university. In a playoff system, no one is guaranteed to be in the playoffs unless they earn it. This means the weaker conferences in the Big Six stand a chance of giving up their slot. This would be great for the fans, but doesn't do much for the financial windfall guaratees this gives each of the college of the Bix Six conferences. This money BTW is shared be each school in the conference. 2 teams from a conference in BCS games, mean more money. That is all this is about. Take the BCS selection process. Except for the NC game, each BCS bowl game picks its teams to play. Some Conferences are guaranteed to play in some BCS bowls, like the PAC-10 and Big-10 in the Rose Bowl, but the at-large positions can pick anyone of the BCS qualifiers (in the top 18 finishers). They don't have to pick the best at-large teams. So they look for which team will travel best or bring in the highest TV revenues. This is a financial game.

Some day we may have a true playoff system. I'd love to see it....most everyone would love to see it. Nothing stops another entity from creating a playoff system outside the BCS and that's would might take to get something like this done. Perhaps tha AP Pollsters will step up some day since their poll is not involved in the BCS rankings.

Hope this helps. Sorry for the long wind for those that either knew this or were not interested.

    Hook'em Horns.

Go away DawgBRAIN. Take your petty personal diatribes back out west. Those of us arounf here prefer to talk football like men not like a whiny little fudge packer like you!

You wont find me in another blog bashing the BIG 12 or bashing the Big East lol. I dont believe that the SEC is the best conference in college football, I know it is. I dont need to dig up stats and facts to prove it because I know we send any where from 5-7 teams to bowl games year after year and we usually win the majority of those bowls. Now, what Dawgmeat does is try to make case by case measurements of success to prove what he is saying. Yes, Oklahoma State beat Georgia this year, yes UCLA whipped Tennessee earlier this year, and last year as well. Does that mean the SEC is not as strong as we know it to be? Of course it is still strong, are we unbeatable, of course not, teams do step and up beat us time to time. But, then the heavens realign and we reestablish our dominance. South Carolina defeated Clemson and Georgia defeated Georgia Tech, the same Tech that has been playin solid football all seasons. Now, can we talk about Florida and Bama please?

So, in using your own logic, the SEC must be the great conference everyone claims it to be!!! Because Dawgmeat spends 90% of his time on our blogs making a case of why or how the PAC-10 is as a good as the SEC. So, that only proves that the SEC really is that good and that the SEC does set the standard in college football!!!!

Danny ...... oh ..... i get it. in 2000 when UCLA beat #3 Alabama .... i guess thats an example of an unranked Pac 10 team beating a top 5 SEC team ..... in their own house, huh? lets forget all about the fact that Alabama ended up with a 3-8 record in 2000 ..... an unranked Pac 10 team beat a SEC team that was ranked #3 in the country in their own house. the only thing that matters is where were they ranked at the time they played ..... right ???

you still havent address the fact that 3 of the worst teams in the Pac 10 played damned tough against 3 of the best teams in the SEC. 3 teams in the lower half of the standings in the Pac 10 .... played 3 teams in the top half of the standings in the SEC ..... and played them tough. one beat them, one outplayed them and lost because of a couple bad turnovers .... and the third lost on the road in OT, and only because their kicker was injured. Washington damned near beat LSU .... but Oregon, Oregon St and Stanford ..... all teams that DESTROYED Washington .... wouldnt have a chance against LSU ???? lol ..... youre an idiot.

Dawgmeat, you consistently point out that for other Conferences and teams to do well, that they have to play well against or beat an SEC team. While it may be true that a PAC-10 team beats or even plays well against us, but only thing it proves is that on that given day that PAC-10 team was better or as good as that SEC team that it beat. The PAC-10 this year has made great strides in reaching parity with the SEC, when it past years, USC owned that conference and pushed everybody around in it.
