Tide rolls on with 32-13 win over Tebow’s Gators

  • Print

ATLANTA (AP)—The move was so unlike Nick Saban. The Alabama coach put away all that boardroom talk for a leaping shoulder bump with star running back Mark Ingram.

The Crimson Tide was back on top.

Across the way, Tim Tebow couldn’t do a thing, tears streaming down his cheeks as he watched the clock wind down on an ending that wasn’t in his farewell plan.

With Ingram and Greg McElroy leading an emphatic 32-13 chomping of top-ranked Florida on Saturday, No. 2 Alabama again stands supreme in the Southeastern Conference. More important, the Tide is just one win away from an even bigger title—its first national crown since 1992.

Alabama will face Texas in the BCS championship game after the No. 3 Longhorns beat Nebraska for the Big 12 championship Saturday night when Hunter Lawrence nailed a 46-yard field goal as time expired.

“Everyone had to buy into not to be denied in this game,” Saban said, getting back to business after a raucous celebration at the Georgia Dome. “To be a champion, that’s what you had to do. I’ve never been prouder of a group of players.”

The no-nonsense coach, who talks of “The Process” instead of the houndstooth, needed only three years to bring Alabama back from a grim era to a place it was accustomed to under Paul “Bear” Bryant.

Champions, indeed.

“They seemed like they wanted it a whole lot,” Florida cornerback Joe Haden said.

Ingram, making a strong bid to claim the school’s first Heisman Trophy, rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns. McElroy threw for 239 yards and a touchdown to claim the MVP award, showing he’s no weak link. The Alabama defense held Tebow in check and left him crying at the end.

“It’s tough. You know it’s not how you want to go out,” Tebow said. “They were just better than us today.”

Alabama (13-0) moves on to Pasadena for the BCS championship game, an accomplishment they noted by passing out roses in the locker room. In fact, the school fight song, “Yea Alabama,” refers to a long-ago Rose Bowl appearance.

Tebow and the Gators (12-1) will likely settle for the Sugar Bowl, denied a shot at their second straight national title and third in four years.

“Our standard was to be as good as Florida,” Alabama linebacker Cory Reamer said. “Today, we were better than them.”

The Tide led all the way, establishing its will on the very first drive. In the second half, Alabama shut ‘em down, making up for its loss in last year’s SEC title game.

Trailing 19-13 at the half, Florida took the third-quarter kickoff and came up a yard short on Tebow’s third-and-7 pass to Riley Cooper. The Gators didn’t know it at the time, but it was over.

Ingram carried it three straight times before McElroy went down the right sideline to Maze for a 28-yard pass. A costly penalty on Jermaine Cunningham— he shoved McElroy in the back two steps after the quarterback threw the ball away—set up a perfect throw and catch.

McElroy rolled to his right, stopped suddenly and lofted the pass in the other direction, the ball dropping over Colin Peek as he extended his arms to haul in a 17-yard touchdown.

Ingram finished it off with his third TD early in the fourth, powering over from the 1 to cap an 88-yard drive—the Tide’s longest of the season.

Tebow, who came back for his senior year in hopes of winning another title, was 20 of 35 for 247 yards but his last gasp was picked off in the end zone.

“He’s a great player,” Alabama receiver Julio Jones said, “but man, we’re tired of him.”

Saban led LSU to a share of the 2003 national title and, after a brief, unhappy stint in the NFL, he returned to take over an Alabama program that had gone through four coaches in seven seasons. It didn’t take long for Saban to realize just how passionate the Tide faithful are about their football—more than 90,000 fans turned out for the spring game.

Saban’s first year was a struggle (Alabama even lost to Louisiana-Monroe) but it was clear he had the program back on the right track. In Year 2, the Tide ripped off 12 straight regular-season wins before Florida ruined their title hopes, rallying for a 31-20 victory in the SEC title game.

Turns out, Saban’s team was just putting it off a year. With that SEC loss on everyone’s mind every step of the way, Alabama went 12-0 in the regular season again, and this time not even Tebow and the mighty Gators could stem the Tide.

“Everything we did all year long was to beat them, to be better than them,” Ingram said.

As the new SEC champions celebrated, “Sweet Home Alabama” blared over the speakers at the Georgia Dome.

“Roll, Tide, roll!” the fans cheered along.

Florida was short-handed for a rematch that has seemed preordained from the very first practice of the season. Carlos Dunlap, the team’s best pass rusher, couldn’t play after being arrested on drunken-driving charges Tuesday. Another key player, receiver-returner Brandon James, was hobbled in the second half and couldn’t return.

At end of third quarter, Alabama celebrated with its crimson-clad fans, while Tebow called all of his teammates around him at the 40-yard line, exhorting them to pull off another fourth-period comeback. That’s what the Gators did a year ago, scoring two TDs in the final 15 minutes to overcome the Tide.

Not this time.

The Tide held the ball for nearly 40 minutes and piled up 490 yards against a defense that was ranked No. 1 in the country, allowing less than 10 points and about 233 yards per game.

Ingram’s performance was no surprise, even though he was coming off a dismal 30-yard effort against Auburn and went out late in that game with a hip pointer. He passed Bobby Humphrey for the school rushing record in a season (1,542 yards) and augmented his performance with a 69-yard reception on a screen pass.

McElroy, a third-year junior, had gone through some ups and downs in his first season as a starter. But he was nearly flawless against Florida, with his legs as well as his arm. He hopped on one leg along the sideline to pick up a crucial first down, and he set up Ingram’s final touchdown with a bobbing, weaving run to just short of the end zone.

“If you want to be a champion, you have to have a team of champions,” McElroy said. “This team came out and proved itself a champion.”

First of all, although I'm disappointed that the Gators lost...I have to congratulate Alabama. They wanted it more and it showed. Bama...go out there and destroy Texas like you did to Florida...and Flirida, go out there and destroy Cincy! I know I'm a little late getting on here, but believe it or not, I just finished watching the game. I spent most of my weekend at Home Depot, Ikea, etc. Buying items and working on our new house that I was only able to watch part of the game each night after my wife and I quit working on the house for the night.

Congradulations Bama! I had the pleasue of making the road trip to the game this weekend hoping to see a war and managed only to see... well, what turned out to be the Gators worst defensive performance in over 10 years and our worst offensive performance of the year. I was amazed at how Bama's O-Line dominated Florida's D-Line the entire game. Just absolutely amazed at that. Atlanta was a buzz with great pre-game festivities in a very cold Atlanta Friday and Saturday. Both fan bases enjoyed all the energy of this years best playoff game. My hat is off to Bama's outstanding performance and to an ardent fan base that was sportsmanlike in their victory.... With the exception of a few roudy, hammered, over-zealous 20 sommething students who got nasty at imes (which is typical in any environement like this), Bama was pretty classy with the win in my experience at and around the game.

My hat is off more to McElroy (who played lights out) than to Ingram (who still had what may be the game performance he needed to take the Heisman). Ultimately the Game ball should go to Bama O-Line. They were brilliant the entire game. My heart goes out to Tebow who's emotional leadership which has always been valiant was overshadowed by the two HUGE mistakes he made in the fourth quarter that hurt any chances for the Gators to make a run in the end. I'm sure he felt a lot of responsibility for letting the team down. In the end it was the 11 guys on the defensive side of the ball that let the team down for Florida! I didn't meet of talk to a single Bama fan before the game that didn't believe that it would be a tough game nor did I hear any not express complete surprise over Florida's defensive performance. As a Gator fan, no one cane figure out why the defense didn't show up...

Great game Bama! I will be pulling for the Tide to take Tejas!

1278 - ssterens - It was indeed a good game. I think that Bama just wanted it more. That would be great if Bama and Florida ended up number 1 & 2. That would be a great end to a great season.

    NICE POST AND WITH CLASS.

1286 - On _Condition - Good post - True Bama fans will not get involved with the trash talk. It is OK to carry on a little fun but have class and show respect. Bear always told his players to pick up the other team's players after you knocked them on the ground. Pat them on the butt and send them back to their huddle. Do the same with the trash talkers. If you are trash talking, it is because you are not a true football fan. True fans respect good play.

Florida could never get their "A Game" going this year...if they had one. Last year it was easy...with Percy Harvin. Yesterday's game was how they played all season...and Saban was watching the whole time.

Sad Florida got saddled with that Number 1 spot. I guess it was for their Defense? Strange Season...and not over with Florida probably losing again in their Bowl Game.

Dick - I think that the point may have been lost on you. Mark Richt had made a spectacle, and travesty of the game, the previous year by having his entire team rush the end zone when they scored for the first time. Bad, very bad, things could have happened. The entire team ran down and celebrated in the end zone at the coach's pre-planned behest. Georgia was penalized and much was said about it.

So, the following year, Meyer called a time out with a few seconds remaining. He was making a point and within the rules of the game.

Interestingly enough, someone agreed with you and said what comes around, goes around. I don't see the correlation with anything that happened last night, he was making a point to someone who had disrespected him and his team in their previous meeting. He offended those that took pleasure in the original offense.

So, again, I'll ask, what act of douchebaggery had Florida committed last year in the SEC championship game vs. Alabama that would have made Saban feel that he should do anything but let the clock run out and shake hands?

I'm guessing you lead a pretty miserable life to find such pleasure in seeing Tebow cry... Yeah it's always fun to see an upstanding young man and fierce competitor in tears. You must have really been elated when he suffered the concussion against Kentucky.
I have zero use for anyone who enjoys seeing others in pain, be it physical or emotional.
Keep those classless posts coming - I know there's a few other Tebow haters on this thread that love to read your loser-azz drivel...

Oh yessss! The Tide prevails. I bet the Big Bear in the sky is all smiles. What a performance by the
Crimson Tide. They outplayed the Gators on both sides of the football. Well done Saban. Now it will
the Longhorn's turn to be beaten by the Tide in the Rose Bowl. Bama deserves to win the National Championship.

It will be a classic. Texas is 7-0-1 against the Tide. Texas is a great team and I pulled for them last night. Well, enough of that. This is Bama's year!

    Bring on the Longhorns!!!

    Roll Tide!!

Congratulations on the win yesterday amigo - your team was better on both sides of the ball, Saban outcoached Meyer, and Bama deserved the W.
I will say that Fla didn't play great - way too many dropped passes, missed tackles, stupid penalties and poor execution all around, but Bama should also get some credit for the Gators poor play. I think if they played again and Fla brought their "A" game it would be closer, but Alabama simply appears to be the better team this season.
McElroy was a stud yesterday and I hope Ingram gets the Heisman. Given Bama's great history, they deserve a Heisman winner.
I don't give Texas much of a chance in the NC game, but you just never know how things will go a month from now. However, if the Tide rolls the way they did yesterday, I believe Texas is in some serious trouble! And please don't take that as a slam Texas fans - if you watched the SECCG, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
Regarding Fla - one thing is absolutely clear: They need a new OC - Addazio just isn't the answer - Way too predictable and unimaginative play calling. Fla will be a much different team in 2010, but I can see them playing Bama in the SECCG again next year!
The other thing that is upsetting is how many folks on this thread are ripping Tebow - he has been an iconic player AND person for his entire career. He may or may not succeed in the NFL, but he is one of the few athletes I would ever truly consider to be an exceptional role model (and I'm not a religious person either). He just conducts himself with so much class and humility - it's not his fault the sportswriters nominated him for sainthood! Hate on them, not Tebow...
I wish Bama all the best in the NC game and hope like hell the Gators step it up do some damage in the Sugar Bowl. If Bama and Fla both kick butt in their bowl games, I could potentially see Bama @ #1 and Fla @ #2 when the final BCS standings come out next month!
    I can live with that!
    Cheers!

eaglerunner - In post #1230 you said that Texas would beat Alabama because it was a "bigger state". In post #1237 I asked if you were referring to population or land mass. Then, in post #1242 you tried to say that you had not said "bigger state". You had - go back and look.

Is that how you do it? You just change the facts to fit your story? Good job! Credible individual - you just say anything when the proof is in writing, in your own posts, on the internet.

    Amazing!

1236 eaglerunner09 You cannot match Texas' offense

I would certainly hope not...the game would be zero to zero....The only thing less productive than the Colt Magoo led Texas offense was the Nebraska offense...
