No. 13 Penn St. tries to drown out BCS talk

  • Print

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Don’t talk BCS with Joe Paterno.

Penn State’s Hall of Fame coach says speculation about a lucrative Bowl Championship Series spot will be moot if the No. 13 Nittany Lions don’t beat Michigan State this weekend.

“Don’t make a darn bit of difference. You guys speculate all you want,” Paterno said. “If we don’t beat Michigan State, none of that makes any—none of it’s important. So I don’t waste time with it.”

There are a multitude of potential postseason destinations for Penn State (9-2, 5-2 Big Ten), with the BCS a best-case scenario. They’re No. 14 in the BCS standings, the cutoff to qualify for an at-large berth.

It’s a great spot given Penn State hasn’t beaten their two toughest opponents (Ohio State and Iowa at home) on its otherwise manageable schedule. Four first-half turnovers, including two fumbles on punt returns, nearly cost them a win last week over Big Ten cellar-dweller Indiana.

A field-goal attempt bounced off the right upright, too. Penn State shored up its punt coverage and blocking only to have mistakes pop up in other areas.

His voice tinged with a touch of sarcasm, Paterno revealed his plan to fix return problems. After all, he was once a standout punt returner when he played football at Brown—in the late 1940s.

“We’re not going to let them punt,” Paterno said with a straight face, drawing chuckles.

No seriously, Joe, how does the team get better?

“We got to try to catch the ball,” he added before noting that the two fumbled punt returns last week came while the returners were trying to spark the struggling team.

The turnover problems against Indiana came after Penn State had lost just three turnovers over its previous six games, including a stretch of four games without a turnover.

Ball protection may be a point of emphasis once again this week. Defensively, Penn State has had slow starts on the road this year, as well as last week home against Indiana.

Linebacker Sean Lee believes there’s a sense of urgency with the regular-season finale looming.

“Sure, with the games we’ve lost, the way we lost … we should have put ourselves in better position to win those games,” Lee said.

Elsewhere on the field, receiver Chaz Powell will likely miss Saturday’s game because of a right shoulder injury, meaning special teams will be down two key players given that tailback Brandon Beachum (right knee) is out for the year.

Powell’s place on offense might be taken by freshman receiver Curtis Drake, a speedster who impressed last week with a 26-yard gain on a reverse and two catches for 34 yards.

Why didn’t Drake play more earlier in the year?

“Because Powell is better,” Paterno told a curious reporter. “Don’t you go to games?”

Paterno said cornerback A.J. Wallace should be OK for Saturday after an apparent head injury last week, and that DeOn’tae Pannell will stay at guard after filling in on the left side last week for Johnnie Troutman (left calf).

Even if Penn State does beat Michigan State and remains in the BCS top 14, there’s no guarantee they would go to the BCS—though the popular Nittany Lions could be attractive to bowl organizers looking to draw TV ratings.

Iowa sits one spot ahead of Penn State in the BCS rankings and defeated the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley this season. Only two teams from each conference can make a BCS bowl. Ohio State already has one bid locked up as the Big Ten representative to the Rose Bowl.

With so many personnel issues to deal with on top of the media questions about special teams, Paterno doesn’t want to talk bowl.

“I’m going to try to go out there and show those guys how I used to catch punts, ran for touchdowns every time I got my hands on the ball,” he said. “See if we can beat Michigan State on a punt return so we can keep some of you guys happy.”

Joe your brain dead, just like all other stupid yankees. We love it when your conference plays these teams. The sec gets its respect from teams within. You have none. Until you go outside and play and beat a real school you will have no respect. Your whole conference is a laughing joke to the nation. your at best a 500 team in the sec. Its a hard thing to admit but we all know its true. No conference matches up to the sec and that is fact. Nobody cares about yesterday. Today is what matters. Oh yea. Joe,one more thing. Your #2 on the national joke list. Your cousin Ohio State is #1

How is PSU even ranked? They have beaten absolutely nobody and hey jopa all those teams do play a "breather" game, the problem is so far you have played "4" of them in Akron, Temple, Syracuse, Illinois and you got more coming in Eastern Illinois, Indiana, and Northwestern! And to Melanie, you better stick with needle point honey cause the "94 team would have gotten ripped in half by the cornhuskers and the "82 teams were fakes. But thats ok, you gotta go back to 1986 for the last time psu ever did squat and they aint gonna win another NC anytime soon honey.

The SEC didn't seem too dominant in 1997, when Nebraska was running over Tennessee in the bowl game. The SEC didn't seem too dominant when Nebraska pounded Florida 62-24. That was the worst defeat ever in a title game. The SEC didn't even show up for that one.

Also, the current ACC since 1982 has more titles and far more title game appearances than the SEC. Florida State, Miami, Clemson, and Georgia Tech together have more titles than the SEC in that time.

Joe Paterno is as honest as he is young and agile. He defended playing a team from the former Division 1-AA by mentioning that Oklahoma also played one. The difference in Oklahoma and Penn State, which Joe Paterno is too doltish to notice, is that Oklahoma also schedule Miami and Brigham Young, which are ranked 11th and 18th. Oklahoma also plays 2nd ranked Texas, 14th ranked Oklahoma State, 15th ranked Kansas and 23rd ranked Nebraska. Sissy Penn State plays two ranked team this season. Joe Paterno's comparing his team's sissy schedule to Oklahoma's arduous schedule is farcical and deceitful.

mulveywj18 asked "does paterno call any plays or does he just stand around ?? i don't think he really knows whats going on". Good question. He does not know if he is at a football game or wedding.

actually i also dislike these constant bye games right before big match-ups. The BCS and the voters can put an end to this by counting these games as a big zero. Unless its the absolute first game of the season i see no value in it. Even then, it should at least be a team in your division. I would also question the dummies who pay to see these matchups. The REAL problem is that Florida has scheduled a string of cupcakes this year and the voters have allowed them to stay at the top. Ultimately, even if they beat LSU I wouldn't rank them no. 1 because they've only had one real opponent in 5 weeks. Skating by in one decent game doesn't merit a number one ranking.

Melanie ????? you dont recall Penn St playing Youngstown St ????? i can understand that .... youd have to strain your memory and think all the way back to 2006. other than Youngstown St in 2006 ..... Penn St also played Coastal Carolina in 2008 and William & Mary in 1984. add that to Eastern Illinois this season .... and thats four more 1AA opponents than Washington, USC and UCLA have played combined in their entire history.

Hey, Rick Z....you haven't watched a football game in like 10 years, have you? Cause if you had, you'd know that the SEC has clearly been the best conference over that time.
Quiz question...how many National Championships does the Big 10 in the past 39 years?
If you need a hint, it's the exact amount the SEC has in the past two years.
Also, one of those, Michigan in 1997 was a split title. Ohio State is the only outright National Champion from the Big 10 since the Buckeyes won their previous title in, um, 1970.
    Live in the now, idiot.
The SEC owns the Big 10...well, every conference kinda does lately.
But the SEC has been dominant for a decade now.

Good to see the retards have made it over here, too. Since the early 1980s, Penn State has more undefeated seasons than any of the overrated SEC teams. Suck on that, inbreds.

Also, the SEC morons wish Florida State had joined. Since the early 1980s, the current ACC teams have played in far more title games than the SEC. SEC fans were home re-enacting Deliverance during most of the 1980s and 1990s.

That's why they have to get pumped up about a couple of years of success. They were nobodies for a long, long time.

Penn State's non conference schedule is so easy that some high school teams could beat it. Penn State needs to start scheduling more BCS conference teams that actually can play. Penn State isn't nearly as good as everyone makes them out to be. Let me know when their schedule includes the usual gamse against Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio State. Those are the only three teams I consider to be even a challenge year after year for Penn State. What makes it worse is that I live in an area of devoted Penn State fans, people even with no connection to the school are die hard fans, and they think just because they beat up on a school like Temple or Syracuse that they need to be crowned National Champions. Paterno can name all those other schools that are playing FCS teams but if he botherred to look at the rest of their schedule then he would realize that the other non conference games they are playing are actually challenging. This goes to prove the point I've been making for a couple of years now by saying that Paterno has no clue how current college football works. He needs to retire. He doesn't even run the team. The only reason that he's there is because he is a legend. Penn State is truely a nobody and they will never win a national championship with the teams they schedule. They need to learn that the BCS runs through the SEC, Big 12, and Pac 10 more than it does the Big 10.

in defense of j. paterno, he has done amazing things while at penn state. both on and off the field. penn state has always been a sleeping giant. they need an offensive coordinator who knows football, how to win without being conservative. conservative football is good, playing somewhat lower teams is a neccessity for all teams, however, when bowl season comes, this is when it shows. look at usc and their domination over the big ten(and somebody siad the pac-10 was weak).

what kind of response was that? everyone else is playing a sub par team. man up and take some resposability for playing a soft schedule. look at the teams he played before he joined the big 10.........temple, rutgers, pitt (until they started to get good then he dropped them) soft schedule and longevity is the ONLY reason why he has the most wins ever
