Football only: A distraction-free year for JoePa

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—His health is fine, his contract is secure and his players stayed out of trouble.

Joe Paterno just wrapped up a season relatively free of non-football issues that could distract him from the job he’s had a record 44 years—head coach at Penn State.

“Maybe we’re just doing a better job of trying to cover it up,” Paterno quipped Saturday, drawing chuckles during his annual end-of-season session with reporters.

The round-table meeting is a glimpse at Paterno at his most relaxed, a brief respite before the calendar begins anew when he returns to Happy Valley to concentrate on recruiting.

The campaign began five months ago with the anticipation of JoePa’s return to the sideline after spending most of 2008 in the press box with a balky hip.

It ended with Paterno pacing the soggy turf at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium, leading the No. 11 Nittany Lions (11-2) to their best victory of the year in beating No. 13 LSU 19-17 at the Capital One Bowl.

The hip is fine, Paterno said Saturday, though he’s a bit tired from the nonstop schedule this year. A revised academic calendar, plus a lack of a bye week, wore out players and coaches and made bowl prep a challenge.

“It was not easy,” Paterno said. “This is one of the toughest ballgames that we’ve ever had to prepare for because” of final exams.

Paterno won his 24th bowl game in his 36th appearance—both records—and won his record 394th game overall.

The extension signed at the end of 2008 keeps him under contract another two seasons. Paterno, who turned 83 on Dec. 21, is a dinosaur in the coaching ranks for his longevity, especially now that Bobby Bowden has stepped down at Florida State.

Paterno called the 80-year-old Bowden a “great asset to college football” and recalled a conversation in which the Hall of Famers discussed setting up a series at neutral sites.

Bowden’s suggestion wasn’t quite neutral enough for Paterno.

“I said, ‘What are you thinking about?’ and he said, ‘Jacksonville,”’ a smiling Paterno recounted.

Bowden ended his career five wins behind Paterno for most victories among major college coaches, and was replaced by Jimbo Fisher, who was already on Bowden’s staff as the eventual successor.

Don’t look for a such a publicized succession plan any time soon at Penn State, even though JoePa’s staff includes longtime assistants like defensive coordinator Tom Bradley who could ease into a head position.

“I’ve said many times, that’s not the way to do it. … It wouldn’t be the way to do it at Penn State,” Paterno said.

It should be noted, though, that Paterno got the Penn State job after 16 years as an assistant at the school.

Paterno’s time-tested formula includes a focus on finding recruits with character who don’t want to shirk academics. Penn State’s graduation success rate for football players is 85 percent, trailing only Northwestern’s 92 percent in the Big Ten, according to the NCAA.

This year’s senior captains, linebacker Sean Lee and quarterback Daryll Clark, might have been the perfect examples of Paterno’s blueprint. Lee was the finance major with a polished and polite off-field demeanor.

Clark, who struggled with academics early on, got his grades on track and transformed into the charismatic and record-setting face of the offense. Coach and quarterback had such good interactions that the 23-year-old senior often called Paterno his friend.

Not to say that Penn State players don’t run into trouble at times. The program went through a particularly rough patch off the field from the spring of 2007 through the first half of the 2008 season.

“You guys made too much out of the problems we’ve had,” Paterno said. “They’re not that bad … that didn’t affect my attitude about whether I enjoyed coaching or not.”

The drive and determination don’t appear to have waned after all these decades. Barring major health concerns, Paterno seems to have the energy to remain on the sideline well into the new decade.

Just give Paterno a break before asking him about 2010. With several key seniors like Clark and Lee done, next season might be a rebuilding campaign.

“Oh geez, you guys,” the coach lamented. “I got about four hours sleep last night and you’re talking to me about rebuilding a team?”

GENARO C. ARMAS is a completely classless bastard to call Joe Paterno a dinosaur. Dinosaurs are extinct, where Paterno seems to be ageless. He'll last longer in his chosen field that you will, you doltish, half-a-journalist.

We saw a perfect examples this past week of what the younger generation of coach offers -- flip-floppers like Urban Meyer and goulag operators like Mike Leech. Give me good old Joe every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I bet he'd get more respect is he had a WASP last name.

Joe, see you in Iowa City next fall -- hope you kick Kirk Ferentz' ass up and down the field -- but you wouldn't even if you had the opportunity, you have too much class.

#163 YOU are a moron. 32 team playoff system is too much.........make the TOP 10 mean something and also make #1 have meaning, use the current bowls as playoff games. your telling me that you want a team not even in the top 25 to play for a championship?? top 4 rankings get byes then another 12 teams play it all out for 16 total teams. if you want 32 flavors eat ice cream, want a nat'l championship playoff put 16 in there.

Louisiana native and big-time LSU fan here, and I also have TREMENDOUS respect for Paterno and what he has done for college football. The man is a living legend, and probably the greatest college footbal coach ever. Top 5, no question.

PLAY IT OFF !!! It is the only solution. and would greatly reduce the "cat"-calling, name-calling and conference-centric boorishness that most of these blogs turn into over time.

So unless teams receive byes, any playoff requires one game less than the number of teams participating (32 teams require 31 games; 16+8+4+2+1=31). There are plenty of "bowl" games to cover a 32-team playoff. The final, semi-final and quarter-final games could be rotated through the "major" bowl sites.

This has been obvious for years; even back when one had to write a letter to the editor of the local paper.

They could practice for the next 10 years its not gonna help as penn state is going to be Tiger Bait and basically have no business playing in this bowl game as they beat "NOBODY" this year to deserve it. They played "2" decent teams and got their ass kicked, outside of that they played highschool teams. WE ARE......TIGER BAIT!!! DOWN WITH PSU!!

As a huge Penn State I would like to thank Bobby Bowden, now that he's retired, I don't think JoePa will be far behind. I believe the 2011/12 season will be Joe's last and I PRAY that when JoePa goes so does the ENTIRE staff, I again PRAY that Tom Bradley DOESN'T get the job. Penn State needs a new direction, a new face and a new coach not a holdover. I hope that 2011/12 bring a National title or major BCS bowl bid for JoePa's last season and come the thrid week of January they are announcing that Penn State has hired GREG SCHIANO of Rutgers as the new head coach of Penn State. SCHIANO has done great things at Rutgers, he a great recuiter and I think with SCHIANO at the helm he will turn POenn State back into a national power year in and year out.

I am an LSU fan first and foremost. I would like to say BOOO to all of the people on here saying harsh things about JOE-PA. This man is a football legend. Shame on you for saying what you did.
LSU greatly respects JoePa and Penn State an is looking forward to a great game. Anytime you get to play a legend, it makes you feel special.
From all the way down in Louisiana growing up a little Tiger fan, respect has always been given to JoePa and to Penn State. Its still that way.
JoePa should continue to coach as long as HE sees fit. I am looking forward for the opprotunity to see him on the sidelines. Being in the same stadium with him is kind of like seeing a superhero as a kid you know.
Looking forward to a great game. Geaux Tigers.

Brandon B-- Actually, Oregon's last appearance and loss in the Rose Bowl was to Penn State:

    1/2/1995 Penn State 38 Oregon 20
    http://www.rosebowlhistory.org/rosebowl-records.php

Brandon B--In reading your post and in rereading mine, I can see if you somehow thought that I am not a Penn State fan. Far from the truth. That game was my senior year in college and although I didn't attend Penn State, I have been a huge fan for 33 years. If you'll remember, that was, I believe Penn State's 1st or 2nd year in the Big 10 and they were passed over to play in the de facto national champion game because their contract with the Rose Bowl forced them to go to Pasadena. That was the year before the BCS started to invite the Big 10 to its parties.

And yes, as always, I want the Big 10 to win in any bowl game because other Big 10 team victories will show the Big 10's strength to those fans in the SEC and PAC 10 who have a very short notion of history. Obviously aware of the Big 10's poor showing in bowls the last few years, I'm hoping that OSU, Iowa, and Penn State can play solid, winning football.

    ------------------------------
Yes, ConradW, aware of Big10 revenue sharing, just proposing a synopsis of a playoff system that might work, would provide excitement for the fans, and would provide true closure on the season; because as college football fans saw this year, going undefeated doesn't guarantee that you'll go the NCS. Just my opinion.

LSU (not lsu...thats Iowa State) vs Penn St should be a good matchup. If Jefferson (LSU QB) actually uses some football smarts, he may help LSU win. LSU defense can shut down Penn St offense. So it depends on how well the Penn St defense can do against LSU offense. Should be a good game though.

Comments on relative strengths of conferences. Each year you can point out at the end of th season which conferences did well. THIS year, the Pac-10, the ACC and Big-10 did well. Year in and year out...decade in and decade out...its SEC easily. But congratulations on the teams that did well this year...TCU, Cinncinati, Boise St, Oregon, Iowa, Florida, Alabama, Texas.

LSU was a bit overrated this year, but playing in the same conference with the top two teams in the country will do that. Alabama didnt blow out LSU, but beat them. Florida barely got by LSU. My personal opinion is that USC was the most overrated team. When you hear supposed nuetral TV announcers annointing USC as one of the best teams in HISTORY early in the season.... I think that qualifies as overrated. USC managed to end up barely in the BCS poll at 23. I think a thumpinb by whoever and wherever they are playing will help put them into the garbage heap like they should. ..But that is my personal opinion.

Tylerknew... just an FYI, their last Rose Bowl appearance, and loss, was to OSU. In fact, OSU leads the series all time 7-0.

Back to topic at hand, Penn ST is going to man handle LSU. lsu was THE most overrated team in college. to prove my point, Bama beat them, and it wasn't even close, and THEY MOVED UP A SPOT FROM 9 TO 8. How in any world, does that make any sense. A loss is a loss is a loss, and you should ALWAYS move down when you lose. The same people that thought that was fair, are probably the same idiots who think it's fair when OSU wins, and drops down, or stays in the same spot while getting jumped by someone else.

FYI LSU beat Wahington at Husky stadium. Manhandled is not the right word. Washington COMPETED very well. Competed is the word that best describes Washington's effort on the field that night. Yes, it was closer game than most people felt it should have been but give credit to the coaches and players of Washington. They were ready to play and executed a very well thought out game plan. LSU was fortunate to get out of there with a win--------but we did. A testament to LSU's will to win and refusal to surrender. I think LSU-PENN STATE will be a fantastic game between two storied programs. I predict an instant classic.

According to the people at the BCS, nobody in the NCAA or College football is smart enough to come up with a playoff system!! So - to prove them wrong, here is my format!! Start with 32 teams; Divide the Country into 4 regions which would obviously be North, South, East and West with 8 teams in each region. There are 11 major conferences in Division 1 with 3 independants (Notre Dame, Army and Navy.) The 11 conference winners plus the independant with the best record would receive automatic bids. There would have to be a limit of no more than 3 teams from any one conference allowed to play in this format. Then the 20 teams with the best record and rankings at the end of the season would get the remainder of the bids. Again, according to record and ranking, seed each of the teams in each region 1 thru 8 with #1 playing #8, etc.. Week 1; 16 games played with the 16 winners moving on to Week 2: 8 games played with the 8 winners moving on to Week 3 which determines the final 4. Week 4: 2 games played to determine who plays in the National Championship game. This format would last about 5 weeks which would still have the NC game played about the same time as it is played now so it would not require extending the season. Since there is about 34 Bowl games at the present time and my system would require 29 games to determine a National Champion, all the Bowl games could be used as playoff games. Naturally the winners would be playing in more than one Bowl game but at least every Bowl game would have significance and would draw big crowds!! This is similar to the NCAA basketball championship format but only the top 32 College football teams would be playing.

Plutaris AKA "Blowharda$$ has no life and always appears on any PSU post to whine like the pu$$y troll he is. You never know who Blowharda$$ roots for because he's too busy spouting some worthless gibberish about PSU. Blowharda$$, your game is tired, weak, and lame at best and we could care less what you think. Make a downpayment on a life and go F&ck yourself.

And Mike, we blew out the "weak conference schedule" nonsense about PSU a long time ago. Get with reality, every team in the the top 25 has some "cupcake" games on their schedule, PSU is no worse than mostFBS teams. Alabama cancelled on PSU, making it necessary to get Eastern Illinois, who by the way produced the Cowboys QB Tony Romo.

STFU, all you worthless PSU morons and your stupid arguments, JoePa has done more in college football and set more records than any other college football coach. Let's see your record....Oh, you don't have one? The nwhatever you have to say against PSU is worthless drivel.

Here's my proposed playoff system for anyone who is interested:

There are, as of bowl season 2009, 33 different bowl games. (My system is designed to give both the BCS fan and the fan of a D1 playoff system the feeling that they've won the argument).

Playoffs start with 12 teams (similar to NFL). The top 4 teams get a first week bye. This first round of "playoffs" is played at some lower revenue bowls. Just like now, the revenue from the bowls would be split (but I would split it 25% for the winning team/conference, 75% for the losing team/conference). That way (no insult meant to the TCU's and Boise State's of college football), teams that aren't part of the big 6 conferences would be incentivized for making these playoffs because even in losing, they would get a big share of the revenue. The winning team obviously then moves on to face another opponent. The second and third rounds of games would be played at the BCS bowls of today and then would culminate in a true National Championship Game right about the same time as the one that is currently played. The only difference between the payouts on the NCS would be that it would be 75% to the winning team/conference and 25% to the losing team/conference. With this system, you would use 11 Bowl venues to complete these playoffs and still have 22 other games to be played by teams not ranked in the top 12. Yes, it would reduce the number of teams that will play in a bowl game from (taking this year as an example) 66 to 56 teams, but honestly, I really don't care about some 6-6 team playing some 7-5 from some dinky litte conference.
