No. 13 Penn St. tries to drown out BCS talk
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Don’t talk BCS with Joe Paterno.
Penn State’s Hall of Fame coach says speculation about a lucrative Bowl Championship Series spot will be moot if the No. 13 Nittany Lions don’t beat Michigan State this weekend.
“Don’t make a darn bit of difference. You guys speculate all you want,” Paterno said. “If we don’t beat Michigan State, none of that makes any—none of it’s important. So I don’t waste time with it.”
There are a multitude of potential postseason destinations for Penn State (9-2, 5-2 Big Ten), with the BCS a best-case scenario. They’re No. 14 in the BCS standings, the cutoff to qualify for an at-large berth.
It’s a great spot given Penn State hasn’t beaten their two toughest opponents (Ohio State and Iowa at home) on its otherwise manageable schedule. Four first-half turnovers, including two fumbles on punt returns, nearly cost them a win last week over Big Ten cellar-dweller Indiana.
A field-goal attempt bounced off the right upright, too. Penn State shored up its punt coverage and blocking only to have mistakes pop up in other areas.
His voice tinged with a touch of sarcasm, Paterno revealed his plan to fix return problems. After all, he was once a standout punt returner when he played football at Brown—in the late 1940s.
“We’re not going to let them punt,” Paterno said with a straight face, drawing chuckles.
No seriously, Joe, how does the team get better?
“We got to try to catch the ball,” he added before noting that the two fumbled punt returns last week came while the returners were trying to spark the struggling team.
The turnover problems against Indiana came after Penn State had lost just three turnovers over its previous six games, including a stretch of four games without a turnover.
Ball protection may be a point of emphasis once again this week. Defensively, Penn State has had slow starts on the road this year, as well as last week home against Indiana.
Linebacker Sean Lee believes there’s a sense of urgency with the regular-season finale looming.
“Sure, with the games we’ve lost, the way we lost … we should have put ourselves in better position to win those games,” Lee said.
Elsewhere on the field, receiver Chaz Powell will likely miss Saturday’s game because of a right shoulder injury, meaning special teams will be down two key players given that tailback Brandon Beachum (right knee) is out for the year.
Powell’s place on offense might be taken by freshman receiver Curtis Drake, a speedster who impressed last week with a 26-yard gain on a reverse and two catches for 34 yards.
Why didn’t Drake play more earlier in the year?
“Because Powell is better,” Paterno told a curious reporter. “Don’t you go to games?”
Paterno said cornerback A.J. Wallace should be OK for Saturday after an apparent head injury last week, and that DeOn’tae Pannell will stay at guard after filling in on the left side last week for Johnnie Troutman (left calf).
Even if Penn State does beat Michigan State and remains in the BCS top 14, there’s no guarantee they would go to the BCS—though the popular Nittany Lions could be attractive to bowl organizers looking to draw TV ratings.
Iowa sits one spot ahead of Penn State in the BCS rankings and defeated the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley this season. Only two teams from each conference can make a BCS bowl. Ohio State already has one bid locked up as the Big Ten representative to the Rose Bowl.
With so many personnel issues to deal with on top of the media questions about special teams, Paterno doesn’t want to talk bowl.
“I’m going to try to go out there and show those guys how I used to catch punts, ran for touchdowns every time I got my hands on the ball,” he said. “See if we can beat Michigan State on a punt return so we can keep some of you guys happy.”

As far as the BCS, the Little 11 deserves NO BCS bowls this year. However with their bogus tie-in to
the Rose Bowl they're always GUARANTEED at least one. That in itself is a joke. Let's say the Big Ten winner has an 8-4 or 7-5 record ( I know it won't happen with the non-con patsies they schedule every year), that means the Rose Bowl would take that team with a 8-4 or 7-5 record over a 11-1
or 10-2 team from a conference with less political pull than the Big 10. That sucks and is one of the reasons the Bowelmovement Championship Series (some championship) is an utter farce.
If the Little 11 gets 2 BCS bids this year and most years, it just shows more evidence of collusion
among the powers that be.

The BCS computer number DOES still have a portion that is strength of schedule. It is a component of ONE of the mainnumbers used to arrive at the BCS score. It is not entirely omitted.

Now, look at bowl history. I won't recite it, you can look at up. Look at each of the four's history in bowl games to see how they play against comparable teams from other conferences. And not just last year's bowls.
Further, as for schedules, don't forget about when PSU brought USC east in the 90's for those early season match-ups, it was exposing them to eastern media and high school programs during those glorious John Robinson years when even Notre Dame was thinking about dropping USC from their annual schedule because USC wasn't drawing anyone's interest. Further, it was AL that backed out of PSU's home and home for about ten years because AL was in the middle of rebuilding and couldn't commit to the home and home, thus losing a home game every other year, only to have the home and home reinstated beginning in 2010.
Conclusion, all major conference teams schedule creampuffs now giving that the BCS no longer counts strength of schedule as a factor. Now, can we all agree that we enjoy Michigan's struggles and hope that Rich Fraudriguez stays around long enough to do lasting damage to the program?

There is only one GUARANTEED spot for a non-BCS.
TCU and Boise can both go to BCS games if they are chosen by the bowl. Fiesta very well could take Boise to play OKState (IF they can win out) and Sugar would probably take TCU to play the #2 team from SEC.

Actually, there can only be one AUTOMATIC entry for a non-Big six team like Boise or TCU. But, a second team CAN be given an at-large bid. So it is totally possible for both TCU and Boise to be in BSC bowl games.

I don't get the argument that the Big10 is better than the "terrible" Big 12 this year as mentioned.
The conf champ (OHSt) lost at home to a looking worse every week USC team. The fact that they have records with 2 losses after only playing 2 decent teams doesn't mean that's a stronger conference. Same with Big East - honestly Pitt's one loss is to a horrible, ACC bottom-dwelling NCState.
Big12 is down this year, plus with tons of injuries and SEC/PAC10 is better it seems, but until the Big10 wins something out of conference against a quality opponent they don't deserve two teams.

I guess what I'm trying to say is get used to the crappiness of the BCS until Joepa dies and they create a playoff system in his honor.

Who did Oklahoma State beat that makes them more deserving than Penn State.?They beat a ranked Georgia, but that doesn't look so good now. They lost to a now questionable Houston. And in thier only game against a high end team they took a beat down from Texas.
LSU is almost the same, beat a sinking Georgia and then lost to the two high end teams they played (Florida & Alabama).
That leaves two potential openings for Penn State who did about the same as the other two. In reality there are two reasons they likely won't get it:
1) MSU comes on strong and gives them a beat down.
2) Iowa is the feel good story of an underdog winning. As long as they take care of Minnesota, they will be ranked higher and they bring a crowd.

You can't have Alabama, Florida and LSU all in BCS games. Only two BCS games per conference.

Rose Bowl - Big Ten champ vs. Pac-10 champ
Fiesta Bowl - Big 12 champ
Orange Bowl - ACC champ
Sugar Bowl - SEC champ
The Big East champion takes one of the remaining spots. So, according to the BCS system, if the Bowl games were played next week; Ohio State VS Oregon in the Rose. Oklahoma State VS probably LSU in the Fiesta. GA Tech VS probably Cincinnati in the Orange. Either Florida or Alabama VS TCU in the Sugar Bowl. That leaves Texas VS either Florida or Alabama for the BCS Title. No place for Penn State!

"To the Big 10 haters, get a life, wasn't that long ago when the Big 12 was NOTHING, "
OU won the deal in 2000, shortly after the Big 12 came in to existence. Prior to that was the Big 8, and its impact on college football is blatantly apparent to the most casual observer...

What else can he do at OU? Maybe Notre Dame is his next venue, as the independence that Notre Dame enjoys plays well to his strengths... That might take him to $5 mil/yr in total compensation as well, and he could hire Mike back as well...
