Cheerleader carted off after being hit by bottle

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)—An Oregon cheerleader was carted off the field and taken to a hospital after being hit in the head by a water bottle at the end of Oregon’s 44-41 double-overtime over Arizona on Saturday night.

Oregon officials identified the cheerleader as Katelynn Johnson, a senior. There was no immediate word on her condition or whether she had lost consciousness.

Oregon athletic director Mike Bellotti told The Associated Press that Johnson had been hit with a full water bottle.

Witnesses said Johnson was hit near the entrance to the Oregon locker room in the southwest corner of Arizona Stadium, where the Ducks and their personnel were celebrating a dramatic victory that kept them in control of the Pac-10 title race. Technicians tended to Johnson for several minutes on the field before she was taken away.

“There were many things—water and other things—being thrown down there,” Bellotti said.

Arizona officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

“That’s just unacceptable behavior from fans, whether it was an Arizona fan or any fan across the nation,” said Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, who scored the winning touchdown in overtime.

After reading and hearing about the U of O Duck cheerleader being hit in the head by a "full" water bottle, it truly amazes me as to how stupid and ignorant some of the responders on this blog have been by condoning this kind of behavior and attempting to justify it because of the way the cheerleaders were dressed or because of Blount's actions at Boise State. How bizzare can this be...Not only was the young woman knocked unconscious plus sustaining a serious concussion, but in reality, she was only inches away from being killed. Anyone who is this screwed up and who would deliberately throw this kind of "weapon" should be in jail........which would probably affect a significant number of U of A fans at this last game...

The difference between someone who throws a full water bottle in a football stadium, drops a brick off of a freeway overpass or fires a rifle into traffic on a busy highway, is slim. All actions were intended to do someone grave bodily harm and should be dealt with accordingly. This water bottle offense should be charged as an Assault 1 or even upgraded to attempted murder. If I were the parents of this young woman, I would be seeing red. Hopefully, they are working with the U of A Security, the Tucson Police, ESPN, or even offering a reward to find out who threw this bottle and if anyone has a still shot or video footage of the event. This kind of beligerant behavior cannot be accepted or tolerated and anyone who says or thinks differently is a complete imbecile.

Hello there at number 8, asbybaby, ban a team because of one guy, then your team should be banned because you lost to US! Without Blount in the line up, and with the above article I think you should be banned and all your fans...as if beaning a cheerleader is cool? Yahoo won't allow me to print the words I would like to use, so let me say this...your team sucks and your fans are far worse and as for Blount, get called a name, assaulted by fans, and taunted by a MLB AT Boise State, and lets see what happens when one of YOUR guys is in the frying pan. In the mean time, go get some water.

I was at the game and Arizona and the coaches are a class act.

The fans are another story. Trailer trash to say the least. If you recall they had a couple of fans last year throwing water bottles at USC players during a basketball game.

WAWebfoot, cool, you're welcome. It comes in a cylindrical glass jar (approx 8-10 oz) like an olive jar. Two varieties, I don't know their exact flavor names off-hand, but one is red and the other green. The red sauce is awesome, it has a taste similar to Pizza Quick sauce but richer.

There is a little mom and pop shop that I go to for my liquid refreshments that stocks a whole bunch of GOYA products. I will take a peek for some on my next trip. I like it on the spicy side.

    Thanks for the tip!

Ha ha, good one, WAWebfoot, #23's choice of words reveals tasteless vindictive envy (inadequacy) as well as ignorance, cheerleaders root primarily for their own teams' fans as opposed to "strangers", wouldn't surprise me a bit if she lost a boyfriend to a cheerleader from throwing down a little too much Sofrito herself.

Have you ever tried the stuff? It's great, really spices up a meat & rice dish. You can usually find it in the international foods section along with other GOYA brand products. My Panamanian wife swears by it.

Pay Sofrito no mind...she is a vindictive lesbo troll with a BMI of 35. She is just angry that everyone averts their eyes from her disgusting visage. Sofrito thinks only fat and ugly women with anger issues have an intelligence.

Go back to your Andrea Dworkin books and leave rational discussion to the grown-ups.

Please -- she shows up half naked to shake her booty and shake her pom-poms at perfect strangers. She's a bimbo -- that's what bimbos are for: bouncing things off their empty heads. Since she only got hit in her head, there were no important organs involved. There's nothing between her two ears.

The Arizona athelic program should be ban from competition for a year and the football program banned for 3 years. This is the kind of punishment that would send a message to the rest of collegiate fan. Every effort shoud be made to find the person responsible and bring him or her to trial.

But then again nothing will be done that means anything and thats the saddest statement of all on collegiate programs out of control.

The poor young woman is lucky she wasn't killed. By the way, at the end of the comments for this story, there's a link for "bottled water available with your custom link"! A callous society indeed.

Hey #9. I'm not a fan of either team, but you might have posted the most moronic post of all time. You're fans didn't punch anyone? Come on man, this is one time you need to suck it up, and take your lumps. Blount punched a player that was taunting him. Was it wrong? Yes, it was horrible, and unacceptable, and he was punished. This idiot Arizona fan, threw a full water bottle at a hundred pound girl. In all likelihood, he will not be identified, or punished. So comparing the two incidents, and trying to justify what this idiot did, is plain moronic. I know all Arizona fans aren't like you, and some realize that this reflects on the whole university, so take your lumps and quit being stupid.

It takes a big man to hit a 5 foot nuthin 100 pound girl in the head with a bottle. Way to go Arizona "fan"! They should catch him, bring him to Eugene, and let him go thru tackling drills with the team. No helmet, of course.

I hope she is OK. If they can't find the individual who did this and punish him or her, then the fans should be sanctioned. The NCAA can refuse Arizona fans the right to their normal allotment of tickets to whichever bowl game is coming. Something like this should have a severe punishment for everyone that was there...

I could not believe the idiotic students that rushed the field before the game was over. As a University of Arizona alum I apologize for the discourtesy shown by some of our fans. They were an embarrassment. Beyond that, this was a truely great game that did go down to the wire. May the best Pac-10 team go on to beat Ohio St.

I really really enjoyed watching the stupid Wildcat fans, jumping the fence to rush the field, only to find out that the game was not over and eventually losing to the Ducks..

I like the coach and players, but the fans are a bunch of wankers.

This type of crap is always going on in Tucson. A bunch of trailer trash fans. O lets storm the field with Oregon driving for the tying score. Never will you play in the Rosebowl. No class fans.
